headesk superuser.com/questions/668685/… this was a throwaway answer, mainly cause I wasn't happy with how it formatted as a comment ;p

@JourneymanGeek Huh?

12:50 AM
@CanadianLuke: I'm kind of surprised it got so many upvotes ;p

Ahhh. I had a couple of those. Mostly the Mobile Phone question

A: Is it possible that my laptop shut down because my mobile is too close?

Canadian LukeMost likely, there is a magnet that tells the notebook when the lid is closed. If your phone or mobile device also has a magnet, it can activate it. I know this first hand with my old Blackberry and my MacBook Pro when I first bought it.

The only way magnets effect computers is when you leave your speakers too close to your CRT for a year and find out it's got permanent green halos on each side

I suggest you have a word with your lecturer, since I do believe that if you need to ask this, and from what I'm getting from your question, you seem to be entire unsure about even the basics. You currently have no idea what you're doing, and designing a database without having an idea on how to do it will end in some horrible eidritch monstrocity. — Journeyman Geek 13 secs ago

who better to know a dog accent than a dog? ;p
(and yes, dogs have accents)

You think it's better to get adapter for connecting PS1 gamepad to PC or get USB PS clone gamepad? I have PS1 gamepad lying around and I could just get cheap adapter to use that gamepad...

These ads are way overhyped that reading them makes no sense other than we live in magical world.

killing yourself will not remove your belly.

@JourneymanGeek This is my response to ad because killing yourself will be easier way than trying to lose belly in 3 days. ;)
Ah, why I cannot ping Psychogeek? Is it because he is out of this room? If yes, then why once I succeded pinging person who was out of this room?

Sped/speeded in past simple and past participle? I know sped is correct but speeded?

the joys of being near native in english is...
I can't remember

Bob
lol
I don't think I've ever heard "speeded", but AmE is rather different from AuE and BrE.

11:25 AM
Cut will be cuted, read will be readed?

Bob
"cuted" and "readed" just sound plain wrong
@Boris_yo I'm just saying I don't think I've really heard it in everyday conversation.

english is changing, now past are being made using -ed particle

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the ones that accept AAAs are a little wider and come with a plastic sleeve for 18650s (and the adaptor for AAAs, of course). they seem about as bright on three AAAs - which makes sense, 3 * 1.6 = 4.3 > 4.2 of a single 18650. and the batteries are easier to find :D
@Braiam eh, English as a whole is a messed up language.

@Bob Russian gets messed as well by using certain english terms as they are without any translation. Russian gets americanized.

I wonder if remote email message removal would ever become possible. Like today we have time-limited option to undo sending message but what if we decide to undo message a few days after? At least if they allowed to increase time limit and undo message several days, it would be useful.

wow, this must freak out @Bob, it's only early evening for him and I'm here

"he speeded up"
maybe
cut would be cut, read is read
something can be breaded however.
however you'd certainly not readed a book
@Bob: I can't get a 18650 inside my 3x aaa torch ;p
amusingly my backup torch now is a bright red ikea peppermill ;p
(well, until I can get the single AAA torch in a keychain properly)

Bob
@allquixotic I would be, except I'm busy enough to not pay too much attention to chat right now :P

there's gotta be something halfway decent ~$30-$40

@JourneymanGeek I only comment when VTC if, and only if, I feel that the close reason won't tell exactly where to ask :P

if it was a small local store, I'd consider it

@Bob Oh shit. You must be supreme audiophile to buy this...

@Boris_yo most audiophiles would run away from Beats, I'd expect
(though, they buy magic pebbles, so who knows)

@Bob: dude. MAGIC ROCKS.

I just hope the DEA hasn't tapped this chat...
man, is raining outside.. I can't see 10 meters ahead D:

@Braiam Why would they? Max Payne has better things to do.

hmm, sniping tool? Googles what the heck that is
Probably something for counterstrike. And CS is probably a critical base OS part, just like mspaint

snipping tool ;p

@Hennes is a tool for snipers.. what it does? you need to be a sniper to know :P

It might be important since there are all those universities teaching CS

@Braiam: well technically they are pebbles machinadynamica.com/machina31.htm
(amusingly to this day, I have no idea if these guys are a parody site, a troll or a scam)

@JourneymanGeek who in the world pay 40 bucks for pebbles??

2:57 PM
@Braiam: same sort of people who pay 10,000 dollars for power cables?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Probably going to go with a lantronics gamecom 307
pity it doesn't have USB, but for $28 it's great :P

@JourneymanGeek those are not "people" but "insane/rich/stupid people"

@Braiam: they're like, magic rocks man...
@Braiam: XD

you are a dog... your reasoning is flawed

(unlike Machinadynamica, there's people who actually DO pay insane amounts of money for these things)
@Braiam: I also have better hearing.
(also, magic rocks are a running joke here when we talk about audio-sillyness)

3:02 PM
If anyone is interested I got some uber-high quality audiocables. Made by elves under moonlight after sacrificing a rooster to an ancientoak tree. These cables where then deep frozen for a weak for clearer sound and clearly marked which direction of this plain ethernet cable should go into the receiver and which one to the computer.

@Hennes: sadly? I've heard most of these before ;p
not the cables, of course, people believing bunk like that

Aye. Same here.

(and quality gear does not need to be massively expensive)

3:07 PM
Bonus points for starting with #!/usr/bin/env bash

Bob
@Hennes huh.

Way to many scripts use shebang /bin/bash and fail on distributions where there is no bash in /bin/
E.g. because it is in /usr/local/bin/, or in /opt/
Or G-d knows where it is on OS X

@Boris_yo timeline went: play a lot (but not 100 hours a week...) in high school; --> play a bit (maybe 15 hours a week, or 20 at most) at university; --> play 100 hours a week while unemployed and not going to university; --> play 20 to 40 hours a week (depending on vacation, holidays, getting sent home early, etc) while working full time.
the worst stage of my life so far was that unemployed time
but that's behind me now

Bob

        die "Internal error: unknown isbn $isbn in print_books\n" if !$book_details{$isbn}; # shouldn't happen
those are the best comments

heh... the REAL AudioQuest products don't actually cost $10,000+, but there are legit products that retail for $100 for a cable... I just can't see that being worth it no matter how amazing it is, unless it's super long and supposed to work without any significant attenuation for the protocol concerned, but most of the $100 cables are kinda short
carbon fiber USB cable? eeehhhh.... no
I'm really not sure in what scenario you'd ever need to buy a cable costing more than $30 or $40 (freaking HDMI, patent license so expensive), unless you need ruggedized equipment for outdoor use or military applications

3:46 PM
@allquixotic you want to broke yourself, is a valid reason?

It follows the three step program:
1) Buy uber expensive cable
2) Feel good because you bought the most expensive shit
3) Have someone install your system using a good quality cable instead (withou telling you that they used a cheap, high quality cable).

I'm having a slight problem scheduling a task in Windows. I've set up a script to run every Sunday at 9 AM, however the script doesn't seem to have run. I'm supposing the computer has to be ON for this to happen. If this is true, how could I set up the task as to run after 9 AM (i.e. when I turn on the computer) but still once a week?

Bob
4:09 PM
@DoktoroReichard Go to the task settings and check "Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed"
You might be able to force the computer to wake, too (wake from sleep/hibernate, not normally from shut down).

@bob I should have mentioned I had Windows XP in the question, as later versions have "beefed up" the Task Scheduler. In my system, I don't see that option.

Bob
Huh... I don't have XP to test on, sorry.
Well, not till tomorrow anyway.
(Also, I'd highly recommend you move off XP - extended support ends in a few months.)
@DoktoroReichard Appears to not be possible: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722178.aspx
> Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed

If this setting is checked, the Task Scheduler service will start the task if the task was scheduled to run at a certain time, but for some reason (for example, the computer was turned off or the Task Scheduler service was busy) the task was not activated. The Task Scheduler service will not start the task immediately after the task was missed. By default the service waits ten minutes before starting the missed task.

Note
This setting is not available for tasks configured for Windows 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000.

No problem. After searching, I think my best bet is to redo my CMD script to a Python script and start if off there.
(P.S.: I know about the extended support ending, I just like to use XP better)

Bob
You could also create your own service if you really wanted to go that way :P

Hmm... interesting. Thanks for the suggestions.

Bob
4:20 PM
@DoktoroReichard An idea - set your task to run at that time, and also set it (or a bootstrapper script) to run at startup. Have the task check if it's already run, and if not then run now.
e.g. create a file when it's run, with the time stored in it, and check that file every startup
would definitely be easier in Python

Yes, that's what I was planning to do, but in Python. The script makes a small backup file that I only need to backup every Sunday as I open my user account.

@Ash that was... already flagged...

@Bob The only way to wake up computer from shut down is enabling LAN wake option. Or there is another way to wake it up?

4:27 PM
@Boris_yo You can configure tasks to wake up the computer, apparently.
I would also assume that the Power Configuration would need to be set up properly.

wake up != power up
@allquixotic I'll make a bot that each time you arrive to the chat, that tune get played in your pc :D

@Braiam there's no way to inject content into chat that plays sound, so, no you won't.

I just have to make SE to hire me :P

@DoktoroReichard Not wake up from sleep but to turn it on.
@Braiam Technically this can be done?

4:43 PM
@Boris_yo Well... If a program can access basic BIOS functions, then it could be done. I'm not sure but there might be some device vendors that made some sort of hybrid BIOS (they could be accessed from within Windows) and that could allow scheduling power on the PC. But this might be a fairy tale.

Bob
@DoktoroReichard there is wake on RTC, I believe it's fairly standard
A real time clock alarm is a feature that can be used to allow a computer to 'wake up' after shut down to execute tasks every day or on a certain day. It can sometimes be found in the 'Power Management' section of a motherboard's BIOS setup. However, newer BIOS setups do not include an RTC alarm option, although it can still be set from within user applications. Wake On LAN, Wake on ring, and IPMI functions could also be used to start a computer after it is turned off. In Linux, the real time clock alarm can be set or retrieved using /proc/acpi/alarm or /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm. Alter...
> Task Scheduler settings for power management can be used to 'Wake the computer to run this task'.
I wonder if it's part of ACPI. Probably.

@Bob Right I have it but what if I want to power computer on demand remotely?

Has Microsoft removed the wireless ad-hoc feature in Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1?
Here's a screenshot from my Vista PC...
Where do I find this option in Windows 8.1? Is it gone?

Bob
Just search for "connect"

"Ad hoc networks — You can’t create an ad hoc network in Windows 8 and Windows RT, but you can connect to an ad hoc network if one is in range (unless your PC is running Windows RT). There are third-party tools for creating ad hoc networks, if you need to do this."
So they have indeed ditched wireless ad-hoc.

Bob
bleh

And this is the "networking news" in Windows 8.1?
Was wireless ad-hoc really such a pain in the butt for Microsoft, that so many people complained about it, that they decided to get rid of it? As opposed to improving it?

Bob
5:54 PM
ad-hoc wifi, as a standard, was pretty much broken anyway
MS couldn't improve it without creating their own standard
IIRC ad-hoc wifi was the equivalent of using a network hub (instead of a switch)
which is quite nasty
there's plenty of ways to set up a proper infrastructure wifi router on a standard wifi card, and that works considerably better

Why was it broken? You mean it was not a standard?
Isn't "ad-hoc wifi" the same thing as a "hotspot"?

Bob
it is a standard, but it's broken
it does not work well, and is now considered a legacy standard

@Bob We in Israel have something like password protected public Wi-Fi network hotspots available from ISP subscribers for same ISP subscribers who all share small percentage of their bandwidth. Do you have similar thing in Australia?

Bob
a "hotspot" isn't a technical term AFAIK
but most are simply open infrastructure-mode networks
I have never seen a public "hotspot" implemented as an ad-hoc network, and that would, quite frankly, be stupid

@Bob Does wireless access point qualify for technical term?

Bob
6:01 PM
@Boris_yo I would say yes.

@Bob Of course it is... you get hot when you stand on the spot! :p Hence, hot spot!

@Bob Ad-hoc? But ad-hoc is computer towards computer without hotspot wireless access point as middleman.

Bob
nawp
ad-hoc wifi is a specific mode defined in the standards
you can just as easily set up infrastructure-mode networks with just computers, though they wouldn't be 'equal' as in ad-hoc

@Bob And I thought it's something that does not require wireless router...

Bob
one of them would be defined as the AP, and the other(s) would be clients

6:02 PM
@Bob National Association of Wedding Professionals? :)

Bob
ad-hoc is only good if you want a distributed network, but the collisions are crazy

@Bob So ad-hoc has AP in it?

Bob
what?
..
I'm talking about infrastructure mode
look, just accept that ad-hoc wifi is a broken pile of bullshit and move on -_-
or, use it, and don't blame me when the reliability and speeds are horrible

@Bob I don't know if I explained well what we have here from specific ISP that I tried to describe above.

Bob
as I said, you can easily turn a computer into an AP, which would actually work reasonably well

6:05 PM
A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network. The network is ad hoc because it does not rely on a pre existing infrastructure, such as routers in wired networks or access points in managed (infrastructure) wireless networks. Instead, each node participates in routing by forwarding data for other nodes, so the determination of which nodes forward data is made dynamically on the basis of network connectivity. In addition to the classic routing, ad hoc networks can use flooding for forwarding data. An ad hoc network typically refers to any set of networks where all de...
@Boris_yo No, ad-hoc has no AP (access point). Those are used only in infrastructure networks.
AFAIK, "hotspot" is another word for access point.

@Bob Then what I described does not fit ad-hoc description. I think it is infrastructure. ISP user who is subscribed to bandwidth sharing service, shares some of his bandwidth with same ISP users who can connect wirelessly to his router (AP) using password given to service users.
@Sammy Yes but it is not technical term as Bob said.

Bob
@Sammy a hotspot, in common usage, is a place you can connect to the internet with no strict definition of how it's implemented. but it is most often an AP, yes

@Bob So "technically" it could be used to describe a wireless "ad-hoc" network?
Damn those loose definitions...
@Boris_yo So how does this work? What is this "bandwidth sharing service"? So customers who have the same internet service provider can access each others APs? That does sound a bit like ad-hoc?...

@Bob What if that hotspot is just computer that shares his internet publicly with but is connected to ISP modem? Would that be ad-hoc hotspot?

Bob
depends how it's configured

6:19 PM
@Bob It can be configured as infrasturcture AP or ad-hoc?

@Boris_yo You mean like: ISP > ADSL Modem > PC > Wifi Hotspot > Laptop/Phone ?

@Sammy Yes. It can't be wireless infrastructure both ways in scenario being connected wirelessly to home's wireless router and at the same time wirelessly share its internet publicly?

@Boris_yo Okay. Well, yes, that could be ad-hoc. Like Bob said, it would depend on the way you configure it.

@Sammy I think hackers love to use ad-hocs...

I mentioned earlier that Microsoft has officially removed "wireless ad-hoc" option in Windows 8.1. It was available in Windows Vista, 7 and also in Windows 8 (I think). Might have been available in XP as well. But from 8.1 and onward it will be gone. That's safe to say.
@Boris_yo Yes, I think it's possible. If you use two wireless cards.

6:27 PM
That's what I have around my house:

@Boris_yo But no, you can't use the same wireless card to a) connect to a wireless router and b) share the connection to a Wifi device like Laptop or Phone.

0 _ 0 A real-time map of wireless public network access points available for customers who share their bandwidth.

You need at least 2 network adapters to share the connection. Be it wired or wireless.

I found out why my Youtube keep bring up blasted cat Videos

@Psycogeek ?

6:30 PM
@Psycogeek Poor JourneymanGeek...

He found out how to hit the subscribe

@Psycogeek You don't see cat subscription appearing on your list of subscriptions on the left?

@Psycogeek Is that a dog???
@Boris_yo Are these all customers of the same ISP?

@Sammy its a mop, but he got a hair cut last week
I just Made my computer another 6% faster
Hood scoop :-) got the idea from a corvette .

@Sammy Yes! All are subscribed to bandwidth sharing and all have passwords for "VIP internet access".
@Psycogeek Poor @JourneymanGeek...
@Psycogeek I don't know... It's not that your computer rushes forward and collects incoming air for cooling...

6:36 PM
@Boris_yo oh yea its that fast :-)

@Psycogeek I thought it was a Gremlin! :p They do love to blow things up, especially cats!

They had a grill here on the top, and it restricted airflow by about 60% A metal mesh grill. It would keep stuff from falling into the computer. The only way to remove the grill would be to replace it with something , that could keep stuff from falling down there.

@Psycogeek You cut this case by yourself for shape to accomodate cooler?

@Boris_yo no that was the case, that had a top fan, which I didnt really like so much or know what to do with.
So i made a scoop. It can also be pointed front or back so hot air goes away or twards the human

@Boris_yo How do you connect to your neighbors hotspot? You get the key from your ISP?

6:40 PM
@Psycogeek And you decided to install that corvette air collector scoop to cover it?

@Boris_yo Yup , now stuff doesnt fall down there, break the fan blades and all, and also potentially it can have a air filter in it also. But right now it is an outgoing fan.

@Sammy This part I don't know because I am not subscriber of that ISP who offers service.
@Psycogeek Outgoing? You don't think scoop somehow hinders dust from exiting?

@Boris_yo Right, as long as it it outgoing there is no reason for a filter, except to mabey filter the air in general.
Also the original design did Nothing whatsoever to cover an issue of a liquid spillage into the top of the computer. like if a soda is spilled.

@Sammy It turns out customer must have wireless router purchased from that ISP that broadcasts 2 SSIDs - your private connection and that ISP's connection with specific SSID set automatically which does not interfere private connection. This answers my early question about packet sniffing.

The dog could spill his drink when he gets too excited watching those cat videos.

@Psycogeek Up to you to choose. You want dust staying in chassis or exiting to your room?

@Boris_yo That is another thing i was working on at the CEED lab this week.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Aren't you that guy that always wrote "yo yo yo" some time ago when he logged into chat?

Fan filter box cover

@Psycogeek Where you buy fan filter and box cover?

shop vac foam sized , slide in box frame

@Boris_yo maybe.

6:58 PM
@Boris_yo I made it in the CEED lab

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Your dad is trucker?
@Psycogeek How often do you attend CEED? Do you have insider's photos?

@Boris_yo I live at the CEED labs you know. Close Enough Engenering and Design (close enough spelling too)
Of course some people would call it DIY :-) but this is much more sofisticated, i might even measure one or 2 times :-)
Remember this thing, a replacement cooler
to try and fix my haswell cooling
I was using this cooler master 212 thing before, which works wonderfully with the 775 socket but it (for some strange reason) is completly useless with the haswell raw core.
Switched them yesterday, and i got like 35* C differance in the same testing. from 100* and throttling to ~65*c temps in the same linepack testing (a burn in and stability kind of test)
Finnaly fixed my cooling problems , so i could move on to other things. I can now do a 37% overclock. or a fully stable 4.7G with a 4.3g cache speeds. So that finnaly finishes that BS.
Dropping it on the raw haswell core, puts it down lower, and in 3 areas it was within the thickness of a piece of paper from bumping into things (and not working right). Soo freaking close.

@Psycogeek You live in their headquarters? Is it temporary students' camp or something? Where are you originally from USA?
@Psycogeek -35* gain from it compared to Cooler Master 212?

@Boris_yo unfreaking believable differecne. and for no reason i can think of. Both of them had to be sanded down and re lapped to perfection. Like this new beast is very convex, so i had to take off loads of copper to get it back to perfectaly straight to land on the perfectaly flat core (instead of the Lid)

@Boris_yo This is a 3G/4G LTE network, right? The distances are too great for Wifi. I guess they don't have enough mobile towers in that area, so they created this "bandwidth sharing service" where they ride for free on their customers shoulders. Hopefully they compensate the customers by having very low prices.

@Boris_yo I have never seen anything like this. This is not the regular "hotspot", and it's not "ad-hoc". Something of this scale would have to use some kind of infrastructure connection. And "hotspots" usually utilize Wifi technology, not mobile network technology such as LTE.

This is the same test as before, same speed, same voltages, same fans , same case slightly diffferent temps :-) And the fans are no longer at full 2000rpm either

7:34 PM
@Sammy No it's not cellular network. Each icon represents home user's router in selected area. They don't gain anything from that wireless network because it is free for subscribers.
@Psycogeek It says you have 2 chassises and 2 CPUs on the bottom right.

@Boris_yo those are the fans. one is off right now, not sure if i even need it anymore. there are 5 total. both coolers had used 2 fans as the cpu fan.

@Boris_yo Yeah, you're right. I didn't see the link you posted. Despite you used boldface. ^^
@Boris_yo This is very cool! A landline Internet service provider essentially becoming a mobile/cellular service provider (sort of) by utilizing Wifi on a massive scale. And it's free to join. You only give up a some of your bandwidth for your Internet service at home.

Got the xmas lights in too :-)
Mostly so i can see in there when working on it connecting stuff.

7:55 PM
@Sammy Yes it's like free public Wi-Fi internet access in UK I think but here everyone must be customer of ISP to enjoy this feature.
@Psycogeek I don't get your joke...

@Boris_yo Close Enough Engineering & Design labs, that is when you do stuff at home to just get it done.
