lol
sad thing is, if i could do that and use two keyboards at once...
i'd be all over that ;p

12:12 AM
Some games you can use a joystick and mouse together, one to drive, the other to look. With a mega 3D desktop floating around like "minority report" (movie that depicts 3d holigrafic air computer display with gestures) , that method could somehow be applied.
Everytime I attempt some "transparency" 3d destop toy that attempts to work these ways, even 80% shown partly transparent stuff is useless for viewing, screens all over partly shown are nothing but wasted processing for nothing.

lol
more like
You can have two people using the same computer on the same session
throw in a second monitor...

Hello! I'm still alive
Considerably more busy this school quarter, though. Lots of math and programming homework. :(

We can fix that dials 555-ASSASIN

@JourneymanGeek how things have changed. only a few years ago if you wanted to get something done, you would have 2 computers, one doing "work" and the other one that wasnt dead slow. Now we have 3 processes going full speed, and somone can watch a HD video on a second monitor at the same time .

lol
@Psycogeek: you could do that with BEOS
also, i do the dual computer thing ;p

12:21 AM
For one method, the KVM was the tool, to control both. now the multi input device has become a desire. One single super computer in the house and multiple monitors and input devices. (bet they didnt predict that for the future)
Instead of a roaming house tablet, and refridgerator computer. The roming house item is instead just an input device, with a wirless display feed, and no actual processor. Ala star trek :-)
With Oled display, and no actual cpu processing (still video and compression processing) the battery doesnt have to be di-lithium crystals

12:46 AM
should be easy enough to do, with present technology and some extras. 4 seperate OS shell faces, each responding only to specific HID (type) input. a quad monitor video card, with external wireless video compression feeds.
4 displays , that only take the wireless video feed, and display it. the ACK for the video sent back with input device data too.

@Sathya OMG fly is trying to kill me !! Classic WTF movies ...

hm
really needs to find a nice gallery script

2 hours later…
5:16 AM
@soandos what about doing something more inappropriate? Stopping the windows audio service, forcing the program to close?
Or crash :-)

the goal is that after the previous user logs on, there are no side effects that s/he can see

@soandos so more like a pausing or suspend of the task?

h'm interesting idea
I could force that..

some suspends can stop other things.

5:39 AM
anybody know if it's possible to install a custom linux on a router?

@KronoS: with the right arch and drivers, probably

@JourneymanGeek I want to install pwn plug onto a Buffalo N450

ugh
not without a load of dev work then ;p

5:48 AM
well, iirc the pwnies are based off sheevaplugs
which are pretty well understood
running it on an arbitrary router isn't supposed to be that simple

@JourneymanGeek so would it run on a basic computer?

well, in theory ya
tho
you might be able to keep the router kernel and run the same software thats on the pwnie plug... possibly
the pwnieplug is just ubuntu for the sheevaplug with all these pwnieexpress.com/remote_access.html#tools

howdy boys (and girls)

6:21 AM
@Sathya hihi

@WilliamHilsum hey! Long time!

Here's a question for anyone quickly... leaving for work and i'll look when I get there...

At work, I locked my computer, came back after lunch and hardly anything worked - applications randomly quit with address space references e.g. 0x0414211 in a dialogue and said that the application had an error (just thumped the keyboard - can't remember)... My first thought was the memory, but, did a full test, swapped modules around and it was fine. (all be it tested in the same computer)... SFC found nothing and in case there was something more corrupt, I tried to reinstall Windows and it bluescre
wow... that was a very long one... sorry for lack of paragraphs and stuff - I will format it nice and probably ask as a question when I get to work
@KronoS hihi! Not that long!

@WilliamHilsum that is funky

Sorry if you read it all! and worst of all, I feel crappy about it as it has been out of action for a few days, and, it doesn't make me feel too good that I can't get my own machine working!
but... yeah, it is very weird...

6:37 AM
@WilliamHilsum and after it does the restarting at post, it can eventually work and even boot into an OS?

@Psycogeek yes... once it has actually got past that stage (which as I said, is completely random how many times it restarts), it will hand over and boot Windows fine - but, once in Windows, next to nothing works... it is completely random as well - vsphere (which I use a lot) works fine, workstation crashes...

Just started to backup to CrashPlan at home... Have 1.2TB to upload... says 8.7 months for entire upload :/

as for restarts, it usually does 2-6 the moment I turn it on, very fast... and a further 2-3 randomly during the bios, sometimes after the screen has come on
@KronoS wow
again, once windows has loaded, it appears to be stable... just nothing really works

@WilliamHilsum what about HDD?

anyway, going to work now - I'll check back when I get there and I will most likely add as a question
@KronoS thought of that! it still reboots during the bios with hard drives disconnected

6:40 AM
@WilliamHilsum that sounds sort of like a "memory OK" "feature, of the bios software.

@WilliamHilsum (O_o) weird

at first I thought the beeps were an error code, but, then I realised it was just beeping on reset, which is why I can tell it is happening so many times
and sorry, thanks for the help guys... need to leave for work... I'll be on in about an hour

@WilliamHilsum most likly CPU memory , or psu, just need to do some tests and monitoring to get it down to less things.

Well, Im taking a spear PSU today, I doubt it was the memory as I get the exact same error in Windows with just one stick, both or turned around (in different motherboards )and both pass tests... I think it must be the CPU...
why haven't I left for work... need to pry myself away from the computer...

BYE :-)

6:44 AM
bye

@WilliamHilsum spear PSU eh? That must be fun... :P

7:02 AM
Gotta luv this one. paid.outbrain.com/network/…
They wouldnt send out an ambulance based on phone calls because "she could still talk" , isnt talking sort of a requirement for a phone call :-)
just dial the number and Gasp a few times .
oops, redirection link, this is the correct one foxnews.com/health/2012/03/28/…

7:41 AM
Eh well, flagging it is...

8:08 AM
If we get Spanish questions, we know who to blame. :)

8:34 AM
At work... @TomWijsman I don't suppose you have a theory on the problem?

@WilliamHilsum Hmm...
> I locked my computer, came back after lunch and hardly anything worked - applications randomly quit with address space references e.g. 0x0414211 in a dialogue and said that the application had an error
Have you looked at the event log? Are there any dump files?
I'm not sure where they are stored, you might be able to see that in the Reliability History.

none that I could see as it didn't really crash - it hasn't bluescreened or anything... just once after this event, the machine completely froze

Otherwise you can use Search Everything from Void Tools to search for *.*dmp.

give me a second to start it up and I will try to take a copy of the error

@WilliamHilsum Applications that crash like that usually hand it over to Dr. Watson.

8:37 AM
4 restarts before boot... logo came up, 2 more restarts and windows is starting! :/ not good!!!

@WilliamHilsum If you want a dump of a freeze, you could try with this approach.
@WilliamHilsum So it's not specific to Windows? :O

oh no... sorry, a lot to read!
I have replaced the motherboard as I thought that was the most likely cause, but, now I am thinking the CPU is faulty
rare, but, the only conclusion I can come to

Then you could try pulling out hardware you don't need, check if everything is pressed well in its sockets, also check for capacitor problems, etc...

sorry... I know it is a lot, but, you may want to read it all! two motherboards, same problems, memory checks ok

Hmm, then you already did what I just suggested. Indeed, if memory tested fine it would be either CPU / HDD / GPU.

8:39 AM
well, no gpu and it reboots randomly without any HDD in

Indeed not the PSU, as that would be more random behavior or GPU problems or random reboots/shutdowns.

and it is two motherboards, so, can't rule out GPU inside the CPU... no idea what happens if that crashes - but, I would expect the system to work without graphics/distortion...

@WilliamHilsum Then CPU sounds most likely...

but, no matter what, still a CPU error

@WilliamHilsum Nope, GPU crashes will most likely bog your system. I'm a living example of that...

8:41 AM
yeah :( but, I feel bad that this has taken me so long to do at work - but, how on earth does a CPU go faulty randomly :/ Whilst I have seen some that are faulty at installation, I have never seen any that "go" faulty
Maybe it is the graphics or graphics related / new cpus are prone to this after a few years... after all, I have seen many graphics card blow...

@WilliamHilsum Mitigation of electrons, combination of bad material / high temperature.
@WilliamHilsum: I wish I could troubleshoot specific hardware components as I could troubleshoot software, but I'm kinda afraid that involves using microscopes and all that... :P

This is very weird! opened Vmware Workstation and it actually opened... then opened Chrome and I got this error... (one second...) Then, Workstation closed! It seems my machine can no longer multi task!!!
hehe
I really want to get in to hardware design
brb soonish - meeting

Woohoo Archeaologist \o/

9:53 AM
@OliverSalzburg nice.

Ell
hi guys
I have asked this question on server fault a while back I think but I still don't really get it, hopefully you can give a little bit of insight? What ISPs to web hosting companies use? Surely they dont use the same ones that an everyday person would use?

@Ell your question has been asked on Super User

Q: Who provides the Internet service to Internet Service Providers (ISPs)?

KronoSI've been wondering recently about how the infrastructure of the Internet really works. I know that I have an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that supplies my connection to the Internet. But what I don't know is: Who provides the Internet to the ISP? And who supplies it to them? Is there a ...

Ell
So do web hosting companies not use an ISP?

they do, read the answer.

@TomWijsman should make that a blog post in SU blog.

10:10 AM
@Ell hehe... if that question doesn't answer it and you want any help... I work at an ISP and can answer some questions!
Damn... look at all that rep!!! Why didn't I see that question!!!!!

@WilliamHilsum you were too busy setting up new connections :P

Ell
mehh I will just accept that I will never understand :L

@Ell what specifically? Im sure I can help quickly

Ell
@WilliamHilsum I don't know which bit I'm struggling with really
so are all level 3s connected to eachother?

@Ell Not everyone is "directly" connected to everyone, but, nearly everyone is connected somewhere along the line

Ell
by everyone do you mean the level 3s? or every computer connected to the internet?

10:35 AM
well... my computer is not directly to yours, but, somewhere along the line our ISPs bandwidth partners will be connected...
Also, don't get confused with that level 3, level 3 are a company... that is one of many networks
From wikipedia, this is better...
...happy to help more, but, please @me as I am doing a few things

10:52 AM
lol

Ell
@WilliamHilsum thank you thins sort of helps :L
but i have to go now :L thank you

@Ell ok, well, if you need anything later, let me know

@grawity just hit 50k rep (nice round figure too :P), here's a round of applause!

Q: Do ISPs charge for network header bytes as part of data usage?

mydoghaswormsNetwork traffic includes a lot of extra bytes for network headers etc. etc. Does this get measured as part of data usage by ISPs?

Contratulations @grawity... now please slow down a little...
Already answered :( Can't really add to it!

Did she finish performing or yet to start, I totally forgot she was gonna be there

no clue.
about IPL: Don't know, don't have. I've have "IPL" & "cricket" in my muted words on twitter.

me too, i hate IPL, only reason I am watching is for Katy perry ;p ;p

meh, wait till tomorrow when it'll be on YT

Anyone suggest a good <$50 graphics card that will be able to play all new games even at low settings ?
I am thinking of a Radeon HD 4650
or Radeon HD 6570

Q: DNS resolves without adding the host IP and name to etc/ hosts file

Maikel KasseliasIs there any way to resolves host-name without added to hosts file? In order to access internal site in my company I have to add the host-name and IP in the .../etc/hosts file. Is there any way to add this in DNS server or active directory instead of manually add this to 100 computer. Regards,...

Customer with an ex-Win 95 machine running Windows 2000... No NIC, and wants USB put in

10:28 PM
@OliverSalzburg Is that SF worthy?

@Luke Do-able, but probably more worth it to have them just get a new computer. :P

I know... Old couple though, using it just for letters a couple times a year

@TomWijsman The question just confused me on several levels.

@OliverSalzburg I completely understand it but no clue how to approach it because I'm not used to setting that up.

It sounds like what he's asking for is a basic DNS task. I don't even know what they're doing with the hosts file to begin with.
Ah, I see he added in the comments that he did try to add the record to no avail.
Now that is confusing.

11:38 PM
@TomWijsman: ಠ_ಠ

you guys have totally deflated my question.

Which question?

Q: Which virtualization approach to take to protect a loved one from themself?

meleeHere's a brief description of the issue at hand: My beloved one downloads torrents (of Linux ISOs) despite multiple warnings regarding random fun things like spamware, disregards advice. "OMG What are these naked people doing on my computer?!" I chastise him/her for ignoring excellent advice. I...

it is very.. verbose(?) now
your first edit was too (I think it was yours?)
I don't mean to sound overly critical and I apologize if I come across that way, it's just a stiff and sort of weird question now

Doesn't quite matter, I just randomly came across your comment where you mentioned that you didn't like the current edit so I edited it again.
You are free to rollback...

11:44 PM
I know, I just thought we could talk it out. I have to go though :(

Me too, playing some family games.

Is it possible to update facebook status from command line?
