12:05 AM
As I expected.. malwarebytes didn't find anything on a quick scan

that's a good sign

@MarkSzymanski, why do you hate me so much?

@Cawas: I don't.

yeah you do! :P

No, I don't!

12:07 AM
see?

See what...

@victor23k As you had NOD32 running you are probably protected - you could always see whether the registry entries mentioned in the text you posted have been modified but I suspect you are clean.

hate/love... we don't bother replying and insisting to something we don't care! :D
ok, let's be more specific... what's so wrong with leaving the image there?
let's gather more opinions if anyone can volunteer here. shall we?

@Cawas: It's really big, obtrusive, and doesn't have anything much to do with the question in general.

guys... superuser.com/posts/261501/revisions is the image relevant to the question?

Q: Find text on an image

CawasI want to be able to find text on the following awesome image and where the text is located in it. I'm sure there are many ways (1, 2, 3, 4 ...) to achieve this in a customized fashion but is there any OCR out there able to make this a PDF with all of its text as text automagically? Looks like ...

12:10 AM
@Cawas I think snooze buttons on bedside alarm clocks are pointless (opinion)

@Linker3000 I totally agree. my girl loves them tho.

Why have something that's designed to wake you up and then give it a button that makes it stop doing its job?
end of opinion

@Linker3000 be kind enough to make your next opinion on topic? :P

And, also @Cawas. How does my answer on your Chrome Bookmarks not answer the question?

@Linker3000 she does it because she's crazy. people are crazy.
oh sorry, back to @mark I made a second small and unbtrusive image. I think you get bothered too easily! :o
about your answer, I'm not asking how to sync bookmarks among browsers.

12:13 AM
It's still not necessary, the question could apply to any question.
Then say that! You just mentioned Chrome!

@mark yes, but I'm not questioning about any image. it's about difficult images. and that's a good example of such.

You said nothing about any other browser.

@mark it is said! read it again!
it is said since the beginning.

I am reading it, it does not mention any browser other than chrome.
NO, it did not.

but sometimes I read in half-words.
it's not about any other browser
it's with google bookmarks

12:15 AM
What?

google bookmarks is one thing

1 min ago, by Cawas
about your answer, I'm not asking how to sync bookmarks among browsers.

chrome bookmarks is another.

Among Browsers

@Cawas On topic opinion: What is your goal in debating the point?

12:15 AM
@Linker3000 being able to leave the image on the question.

When said image is highly unnecessary.

@Cawas Are you able to leave the image in the question?

@Linker3000 I've tried. Mark didn't like it. :P

@Cawas Has Mark enforced the removal of the image?

he thinks my other question is as unnecessary as the image...
1
A: How to sync Google Chrome Web Browser and Google Bookmarks

Mark SzymanskiChrome its self has syncing built in. Simply go to Preferences --> Personal Stuff --> Set Up Sync. You can sync bookmarks, extensions, themes, etc.

12:17 AM
Besides, @Cawas. You already linked to the image as a text link, why post the image its self?

@Linker3000 kind of
@MarkSzymanski because it is highly relevant.

@Cawas Yes or no?

@Cawas: Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said your other question was unnecessary.
You don't need to link it twice.

@Linker3000 yes, twice.
@MarkSzymanski it is a different link. once each.

It's the same image.

12:19 AM
oh, you mean that...
repeating stuff is just another way to emphasize.
emphasis is not a necessity.

What? You just contradicted yourself!

not at all, lol

Yes, you did.
You said that it was for emphasis.

there's the love again :D
dude, what's with you and "necessities"?

Ok, I'm done dealing with your idiocy.

12:20 AM
not everything we do is necessary.
lol
that guy needs a woman. :P
hey @Linker3000 tell me your opinion again...

@Cawas Well..snooze buttons...

you think it's too much this image now?

Q: Find text on an image

CawasI want to be able to find text on the following awesome image and where the text is located in it. I'm sure there are many ways (1, 2, 3, 4 ...) to achieve this in a customized fashion but is there any OCR out there able to make this a PDF with all of its text as text automagically? Looks like ...

because I did agree with @Mark with the previous image, but it didn't bother me all that much. now this smaller one... I can't see why it bothered him so much.

@Cawas OK, I'll bite...as per the site rules, having the image there makes the question too localised and specific to one situation and thus a strong candidate for closure. It would be prudent if you want the question to remain to make the question more generic.
(interesting image, though)

@Linker3000 that's a good advice, but I'm not trying to be prudent.
The question is generic... The image is my instance, a practical case scenario. Maybe, like the other question, I need to re-write and let this clear.
And by the way, please let me know if you find a way to convince people they don't need snooze buttons! :D
I'm off for now, thanks for your wise words, @Linker3000

@Cawas OK, bye!

12:36 AM
Haha, just got the "Strunk & White" badge.

@MarkSzymanski Hooray - it's a mystery when that one pops up as I have edited TONS of posts to no avail!

@MarkSzymanski : yay.

On that note I am going to bed before it's time to get up again - snooze button or no.

Goodnight, @Linker3000.

blah, if i get my new laptop, i so totally need to hackintosh this
Its probably the major OS i have the least experience with ;p

12:47 AM
@TheJourneymangeek. No, don't.
Hackintosh is bad.

@MarkSzymanski: cause its illegal, or cause its a mac? ;p

Because it's illegal D:

@MarkSzymanski : aside from that then ;p

Well, just don't ask anything on SU about it ;)
If you do, this is what I'll say
Questions about hackintoshes are against the Mac OS X Software License Agreement where it is stated: "you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time." Therefore, Hackintosh questions are not welcome here.

... actually, you just solved an issue i had accidentally
naw, anything illegal comes under the 'if you don't have the skills to do it, you arn't good enough to' rule
however, i DO need to fix an ipod, and i could use DU off a mac boot disk with boot132 to format it to HFS....
(the alternative being to have to bring it to a friend's place and have them do it. considering formatting it in linux with badblocks didn't complete after two months...)
http://superuser.com/questions/174431/ascii-unicorn-one-liner
this is an UTTERLY bizzare question

1 hour later…
2:21 AM
anybody know anything about matrices?

I'm sorry but I can't say I do, @KronoS.
@studiohack!
You're giving me random upvotes again!

@MarkSzymanski it's ok

2:50 AM
i used to. a looong time ago

Goodnight everyone.

3 hours later…
5:29 AM
hmm, that was quick

5:41 AM
webapps.stackexchange.com/questions/13796/… i voted to close, started writing an answer. it got moved before i finished ;p

5:55 AM
lol @TheJourneymangeek
answer at WebApps

yeah, did that ;p
but i answered, hit submit, and ended up in webapps with my answer hurled into the vast abyss known as /dev/null ;p

it will associate with your account on webapps @TheJourneymangeek, email stack exchange about it

6:53 AM
no biggie. I answered it again

1 hour later…
8:17 AM
morning all

Morning @DMA57361

8:51 AM
Morning

hey
anyone there?

nope

lol

hi @nhinkle @MattJenkins @Mokubai @DMA57361

clearly :P

8:57 AM
There ain't nobody here but us chickens... cluck

so i made something
but it needs a bit more work before i can release it on stack apps
but if you guys want to check it out for me and give feedback, that would be great

is is a virus?
Malware?
Spyware?

none of the above :P

Shame. Not interested then I'm afraid. I only install viruses on my computer.

hinkle-ware then :p

8:59 AM
haha
just a sec
currently only enabled for new posts, not edits, because i haven't gotten it quite functional with edits
(i wrote this almost entirely while in the car without access to the internet working off a static copy of the SU ask question page I saved to my computer, so bear with me :P )

can't access it

basically, it's a userscript that gives you a link when creating and editing posts to view the markdown text and the preview next to each other
@Sathya internet restrictions?

yes @nhinkle

just a sec
i'll upload it to my site
does that work @Sathya?
@MattJenkins, despite it not being malware, you should check it out ;)

9:05 AM
I've just d/led it now; what's it supposed to do? :)

oh dear. @Sathya that looks slightly broken
what's your screen res though?

I like it how you put it as slightly broken :P
(crappy 1024x768)

ah
it doesn't work well under 1200ish pixels

@nhinkle, I ... don't see anything...

but i have yet to put in any checking for that
@DMA57361 if you go to "ask a question", you should get a link for "side-by-side edit mode"
it's still broken for editing posts, so i haven't disabled it on those pages yet

9:08 AM
@nhinkle nope, just a "buttonRow is null" error in the error console

should look like this:

@DMA57361 IE7?

@DMA57361 browser?

@Sathya FF4 portable

hmm. i've only tested in chrome so far

9:08 AM
finally gave in and decided to bypass IE7 :P

i'll check in firefox tomorrow

Well, I think I installed it, but I don't see it doing anything

@MattJenkins browser, and what page are you on? only works on "ask question" page

FF4 in Ubuntu

superuser.com/questions/ask# -> click on "side by side editing mode"

9:09 AM
and I'm on the ask questino page

ok. sounds like it doesn't work in firefox then
likely as a result of my not testing it in firefox yet :P
@ firefox people: are you all using greasemonkey i take it?

of course

mmk

@nhinkle yup

i'll check that tomorrow
(it's 2 am, so not going to right now :P )

9:11 AM
Well, that's just not good enough! ;)

lol
if anyone has chrome and a slightly larger display than @Sathya and wants to tell me what they think about it, please do :P
otherwise, i'll let you guys know tomorrow how it goes

you'll have to wait for another 5 hours or so :P
I can try it on my laptop

mmk. well, in the meantime, i'm off to bed

bye @nhinkle

'night @Sathya

9:24 AM
@MattJenkins Hey Matt U here?

u iz nt hr

@Sathya Good grief, I am not an SMS service! Fr Fk Sake

bt, bt.. u r.....

lol
Yes, ld3k?

@MattJenkins Just asked a colleague about Ubuntu 10.10 on VmWare player and he says you have to use the 'alternate' install version otherwise the install hangs as you discovered

9:27 AM
There's an alternative install version?

Hang on...

the text based installer?

Cheers - downloading now

darnit, they deleted the practical joke question from SO
does anyone know of a mirror?

because I thought it would have been fun to mention some on the blog for April Fools

trying that installer now...
Hmmm... doesn't even seem to get past grub
Kick it to text mode and it just gives me a corrupt screen when I use 'install'
Ah well, never mind
Thanks for trying anyway ld3k

I got Ubunutu 10.10 server up and running in Virtual Box (Win7 Host) last night with no issues

I have failed to get VirtualBox running on this host (centos 5) up to now - even VMWare 2 struggles, so I use VMware 1

fair enough

9:36 AM
When I upgrade the server I'll switch to ubuntu on the host and run VirtualBox
Can't afford to upgrade yet though

not used VMWare myself, but I virtualise very little anyway

10:01 AM
@DMA57361 Yep, my colleague said "...or just use Virtualbox because it 'just works'"

@Linker3000 except, apparently, on centos 5

@DMA57361 Hm - apparently! I have both virtualbox and VMWare Player on my laptop running Fedora 14 - it's a Core 2 duo with 4GB RAM.

@MattJenkins //nev mind, read it wrong
I have ~ 5-6 VMs - OS X, Ubuntu x64, Ubuntu live, Fedora, openSUSE & CentOS

@Sathya That's ...just greedy!

@Linker3000 :D

10:07 AM
Currently commissioning this beast - dual quad core xeons, 24GB RAM and 12GB RAID 6!

About 8 more VMs to do

@Linker3000 dang, I read it as decommissioning :(

@Sathya Cannot have. Not yours.

plans for a heist to steal @Linker3000's beast

10:10 AM
@Sathya I am now supergluing the cat 5 cables in place as a security measure as we speak.

@Linker3000 hahah

Anyway - I have licked it now so you won't want it....

licked it? wears gloves and continues to prepare for the heist

@Sathya Come on then - make my day..... there's this lot too....
OOps - well, I'd upload a pic but FF4 keeps giving up and crashing!
One more time...
..and 6 more racks - bring a big truck

dribbles WANT

10:26 AM
Got some old PIII stuff you can have...but you'll need a BIGGER truck - here's one of the old things and its more powerful replacement!
..oh and you'll need earplugs for the noise!

lol
I used to have something similar to that

We've just pensioned off 5 of them
The new microservers cost £89+VAT with an HP cashback offer!
My predecessor budgeted £2.5K each to replace them. They won't give me the balance!

pah... hang on

:722620 Snazzy

but mine had the drive bays full.

10:30 AM
Older stuff looks way more macho!

It was on wheels.
Took two of us to lift it
and ran at 167MHz ;)

One of the LH3000s (PIII 1GHz 256MB RAM) had two NICs and was running as a router! The replacement has a dual core AMD neo processor and runs an embedded Linux from a 2GB USB stick and does the same job in 15MB RAM.
Boots in about 10 secs too
Darn I can't type today LOL

heh... I know the feeling
Damn, just got dragged off the crapper by a phone call from a supplier wondering if I needed anything
Why is it that the phone never rings, but as soon as I take 5 minutes out it immediately rings - and then I find it's inconsequential rubbish?!

10:48 AM
Hi @Sathya, sorry for the delay, in meeting...

Wil
It is amazing, the less time I spend here, the more work I get done!... I miss here though :(

lol @Wil

11:11 AM
@Mokubai No worries!

11:30 AM
How is everyone on this fine/dreary/hateful morning/afternoon/evening/night? (delete as appropriate)

as fine/dreary/hateful morning/afternoon/evening/night as it can get :p

Is it early evening or late afternoon there @Sathya?

I'd say late afternoon, perhaps
how would you classify 17:05 anyway

I'd personally classify that as afternoon
I'd say that evening is when it gets dark or after 6PM, whichever is earlier.

hmm

11:40 AM
You're in one of those weird +5.5 timezones?

weird?
but, yeah I'm on +5.5

I normally thought timezones were whole number deals, but found out earlier in the year that it is not so... it shook my world... then the russians said "Feck timezones, one time for all!" which I found reassuring...
Or was that just getting rid of the summertime/wintertime insanity which plagues us? I can't remember now...

@Mokubai good news is that we don't follow daylight savings
so none of that +1hr at some times, -1hr at others crap

What it basically means is that I can no longer be bothered to wear a watch and for about 1/2 of the year my car clock is wrong. Computers and mobile phones are cool and adjust the clock automagically so less messing about there...
Daylight savings seems completely pointless to me, why do we bother?

11:56 AM
I've never figured that out

Whenever I ask people they come up with some fuzzy answer about farmers needing an extra hour of daylight... the daylight is still there, changing the clocks to suit it is stupid.
But that's just a pet peeve, as you may be able to tell.
Are you having fun @Sathya?

Gah... Google has decided I'm in the netherlands now...

@Mokubai :)

Franklin, who penned the proverb, "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise," was among the first to suggest the idea. In a 1784 essay he wrote that adjusting the clocks in the spring could be a good way to save on candles.
The practice of changing the clocks has had a somewhat bumpy history in the United States. It was first established in 1918, but then repealed a year later. During World War II, the country again took up the practice to conserve energy from 1942 to 1945.
...Another study, performed in 2007 by the RAND Corporation found that the increase in daylight in spring led to a roughly 10 percent drop in vehicular crashes.
So if we all used candles instead of this wonderful thing called electricity, there'd be a point to DST

Hmm...whole number deals...farmers....OK...
There was this farmer who had a talking sheepdog.
One day he said to the dog "Go into the far field and round up the sheep"

12:10 PM
How did it smell?
Oh, sorry, wrong joke.

"OK said the dog"
a short while later, the dog came back panting..
"All done?" said the farmer
"sure", said the dog
"How many?" said the farmer
"40" said the dog
"That's strange", said the farmer, "I thought we had 38 sheep"
"We do", said the dog, "but you told me to round them up"

... cue @Sathya

Whoa - tough audience ___@__ tumbleweed

(is @Sathya googling for the right sound effect?)
Loading.................done

heh, not quite, attention diverted to a problem at work

12:21 PM
@Linker3000 I lol'ed :)

current task in hand: convert a 70-line query from Oracle's (+) join syntax to ANSI joins

@Sathya Your databases scare me more every day...

well, it's for a friggin report :/

1:25 PM
nom nom nom, salad for lunch :/

1:41 PM
@MattJenkins Another day, another pasty

pah
Pastys are the spawn of the devil

@MattJenkins Usually I'd agree, but the Tesco hot ones from the instore bakeries are actually quite good.

They're even more the spawn of the devil

They have recognisable bits, for one!

lol
Is that always a good thing?
Do you always want to recognise the bits?

1:43 PM
Well, it's better than the grey paste from the likes of Gins...er, 'other' pasty suppliers.

heh
They are all evil and should be shot out of the barrel of a cannon straight at the sun.

Well, that would keep them warm

burn them! BURN THEM ALL!!! MWahahahahaaha!!!!!!

Did you once have a bad experience with a pasty? For example, one stole your lunch money?

Pasties are the reason I'm such a big fat jelly wobbly fat bastard. That and guinness.

1:45 PM
Ah, self-inflicted hatred.

Pasty inflicted, not self inflicted.

Lay off the salads - evidence shows that 100% of people who ate salads eventually died.

I didn't tell the pasties to get bought by me.
lol

...brb...off to get a Twix....

Argh! Evil temptress!

1:48 PM
NO TWIXES (TWIXI? TWIXEN?)
...roughing it with a Snickers

Isn't it "One twick, two twix, three twixes, four twixeses" etc?

"One twick, two twix, three twixes, four twixeses - call a doctor"
Mind you - I tried out the new machine at the gym the other night. I had to give up after half an hour though - I can't eat that much chocolate.

lol
Why do they put chocolate machines in gyms?
and also, why do they site kebab shops between the gym and home?

Consumerism - literally!
(Four twixes = RAID 5 + Spare Twix)

lol
thee in your mouth, one in your pocket?

1:53 PM
You couldn't make it up:
Duke Nukem Forever Gets Delayed - Again

Tempted? (I'm still not convinced): Will Samsung clear the way for its new, much more svelte 8.9in and 10.1 Galaxy Tabs by selling off the original, 7in model cheap? If it won't, retailer Asda will.

It is now offering the Android 2.2 Froyo tablet for a mere 300 quid, down, it says, from £437

I'm trying to get my hands on an O2 Joggler unit to mess around with it.
@MattJenkins Not bad - apart from that 'dell' bit ;-)

I know - it was free
an it took a bit of juggling to get 3 hard drive into it. I'd have preferred 4 but couldn't get the BIOS to recognise it
but then one of the drives is a sata drive connected to pata through a little adaptor card that cost 4 pounds

1:58 PM
8TB RAID 6 FTW!

Nice - but is that in your bedroom?

In the East Wing, next to the helipad and swimming pool.

@MattJenkins I have a scary server at home - two IDE drives striped as 160 + 320GB mirrored to an identical pair in an LVM volume

This used to be 3x500GB in a JBOD
now it's 3x2TB in a raid-z

2:02 PM
Disk prices are just getting so low now. Will be interesting to see what effect the Japanese troubles will have on the market - although I suspect a lot are made in Korea/Taiwan, but as for the components..?

Who knows
That's one reason I bought now instead of waiting
also the bad blocks on the old drives were driving me mad
I really want a nice mini atx board with 6 sata built in so I can make a proper NAS
couple of gigabit network ports would be nice so I can bond them

@nhinkle Is it me or is the side-by-side thing wider than the actual width on a question page?

Why are there 70 graphics cards in your computer? Because my PSU supports it.

heh
right, I gotta go see if I can get a neighbour's TV working... (why me? It's not a computer? But they're 90+ and I didn't have the hear to say no)

@MattJenkins : my mom once tried to change channels on the TV with the cd player remote. ;p
