12:08 AM
morning

1 hour later…
1:31 AM
bleh, still no word from lenovo about the USB issue, its been over a week

I don't know if anybody heard but OpenOffice.org is in trouble, if ya the chance make a donation teamopenoffice.org/de/spende.html and let some other people know about it. Thanks!

1:50 AM
i thought everyone moved to libre?

LibreOffice FTW

also its in german >_>

It's lame that they can't merge OpenOffice with LibreOffice.

well, libre split off cause of structural issues with OOo
ok, called them, got escalated... and on hold while they check it up
(lenovo, called them week ago cause a USB port broke off in socket

But apparently because OOo is a different license, libre can't be merged into it. I'm not sure of the details. But it sounds retarded. You would figure open source is, well, open eh?
And OOo can't be merged into Libre for the same reasons.
I wish I knew the details, but it sounds like someone needs to go in there and take the two parties and smash their heads together.

2:04 AM
i believe OOo might have been switched to CDDL, and sun/oracle has copyright assignment on it, libre got forked off. then OOo got handed over to apache
Libreoffice can and does use OOo code i believe, as well as the former GO-OO patches

Ya, it's something like that. I guess it is just too expensive to change the license paper work on it.

hm, my bad, OOo is under LGPL

Libre is LGPL also??
Oh yeah?
Same license, but can't merge?

@leeand00 Or save the donation money and put it towards a copy of Microsoft Office! :)

lol
well, 'won't'
libre is based off a fork that had a bunch of patches sun wouldn't accept

2:18 AM
I can't stand Open Office - I used it a few years ago and support didn't exist - you ask for help somewhere and people blame you for doing something wrong... It is good in theory, but, compatibility and more... MS Office all the way for me.

lol
it dosen't work very well
I prefer the Abiword UI, for example

I just don't understand what all the drama is all about.

@surfasb: oracle kind of teed off a lot of people in the OSS community cause of solaris and their red hat spin

Well, the Apache Foundation owns it now.
@JourneymanGeek Well, I figured Oracle has donated the code base, so it's over?

I would really like to see FF style standalone apps that actually work ._.
@surfasb: chances are, OOo might die, or they choose to merge back into libreoffice/TDF
but for now LO is the dominant branch

2:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek That would suck from a dev's point of view.
Because you still end up having to include all those shared libraries anyways.

@surfasb: no, not really, since they would only need to focus on compatibility with one aspect. The working thing is important
@surfasb: well, in theory abiword + gnumeric + ??? might work, but their compatibility with current docx files is horrid

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's why I think the cost of MS Office alone is worth the peace of mind.
@JourneymanGeek I am reminded when MS Office was the underdog and WP was king.

@surfasb: Well, at the moment , at work we standardise on MS office eventually
but new systems get LO in the interim

@JourneymanGeek Microsoft was tired of hearing WordPerfect harping the "compatibility" theme, and I read a story of how they gathered a team of devs that did nothing but made sure the next release of MS Word could 100% convert WordPerfect files
they as in Microsoft.

@surfasb: I want to see that with OOo

2:30 AM
Well, at least software documentation is like 10000000 times better than back in the days of WordPerfect.
No idea of software documentation for WP files even existed back then. . .
Yeah, I'd like to see OOo put some real effort into compatibility instead of all these new features.
Or the new interface.

eh
yeah
I'd rather have feature parity, or at least being able to open docx files with the same layout, than say, a ribbon menu

They won't reach feature parity for a long long time.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the MS Office Ribbon Bar, I gotta say...

Besides, users aren't asking for more features.
They are asking for compatability.
The Ribbon is another conversation all together.

Everytime I asked for help with OOo on their Community Forums I got it.
I can't complain about their support...

2:34 AM
No one is complaining about their support

@surfasb: the 'killer' feature in academic writing on office for me is the biblography/citation system

or their forums for that matter.

so, yes, actual feature parity - where it comes to compatibility

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, feature parity is a long long ways away.

though
i will settle for things looking the same ;p

2:35 AM
They should just concentrate on 100% conversion of DOCX files.

I agree with ya on that.

All the features in the world don't mean jack when I send my resume and it looks like my dog ate it.

When I send a resume from OOo I generally export a pdf...

If someone sent me a file I can't open in Word, I won't spend any time trying to fix it.

Right especially if it's a resume...

2:37 AM
Ya, the PDF is a good call.
RTF isn't bad either. That's what I use.

eh. I tend to do final editing and proofing in MSWord

Most places accept pdfs...but there are a few....

Wait, I don't think OOo has rtf. . .

though there was one point where i was slinging a spreadsheet between OOo calc (cause i was used to it) and excel (cause it was easier to do something with it)

I dunno if they have rtf or not, I never checked...

2:38 AM
Ughh, spreadsheets are the worst.

my copy of LO has RTF

During our test run with Google Apps, the spreadsheet conversion was the deal breaker.

I haven't tried LO, I'll have to check that out.

/me hasn't gotten around to getting a copy of MSoffice >_>

Does it come with SuSE?

2:39 AM
I believe so

I can image Calc to Excel conversions being a lot like voodoo.
and vice versa

@surfasb: with basic tables, no, not really

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, that's all I would trust.
@JourneymanGeek I never had problems, except with charts.

Woo I just found an old PDA!

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, it just goes to show. 100% conversion is the killer feature.

2:42 AM
Sharp YO-380 man this thing is old! It runs on them motherboard batteries...those 2032s

@leeand00 Lulz. I still have an old Handspring, the Palm fork.

Oh this waaay old....
It's got 256KB of space...

I had a palm m515 back in the day

I had quite a few of them palms they were awsome
Too bad ya need a plan now for about anything but an iPod Touch...

lol
no, not really - there's quite a few android based PMPs

2:46 AM
Oh man this things got apps too...Calendar, Schedule (Schedule?), Annaversy, To Do (only got that one last week on the iPod!), Telephone Contacts, Memo, Expense, World Clock, and Calculator...
No new apps though, the buttons for them are hardwired....
Oh? PMP?
What's that PMP?
Oh Portable Media Player...okay....

@JourneymanGeek I still miss the trusty Palm OS.

The PDA is dead, long live the PDA!

That calendar app trashes any default calendar app currently

Heck yeah it did.
I think I'd pay for the palm calendar app on some other Mobile-OS

I chose the Palm Pre solely because it was the closest thing to a real calendar app.
Yeah, the closest I can find on the iPhone is calenGoo.

2:53 AM
So it's pretty close then? I haven't used one of those

Yeah pretty close. It's got the usual slick interface. Compress free time, multiple calendars. But sadly, no agenda view.

Well, not all the palm's had Agenda View....
The guy who built Palm left, he wanted to learn about Neural Networks and AI...

Yeah the later ones. But think about how old that OS was.

It's too bad he left, he just started Palm so he could do more AI stuff...

Yet that OS ruled. Even on the Treo.

2:56 AM
Oh yeah it's real old...I used it from the time I was in 11th grade until the end of college....
Thing probably got me through college!

and it was lightweight as hell
and turned on faster than a modern dumbphone

It's weird because I meet so few people who use their calendars anymore.

I used to load my calendar up at the beginning of the semester with all the due dates...

Back then, every working person I met had a day planner.

Ya think people use the ones on their phones?
I dunno how one could live without a calendar...

2:58 AM
Not like the day planners.

One that beeps, I mean...

Ya, I have no idea how people survive without a day planner.

I wouldn't even go to college if I didn't have some sort of calendar, todo list, and flash card app.
It just wouldn't be worth the money...
Now the thing's always gotta come with an Internet connection so you're constantly distracted by this message or that message coming in...
But if ya don't have an internet connection now days, all your crap is out in the cloud so you have to be connected...
Man I'm sure glad I grew up when I did.
I don't think I ever would have gotten it together the way stuff's setup now.

It's rare to not be connected

I mean they have those offline HTML apps, but I've yet to see anybody use anything other than Gears...

3:03 AM
The other side of the debate is that it was more common for people to lose their day planners, todo list or post it note than it was for people to lose connectivity.

Yeah that's true, when ya lost your pda, or it broke, there wasn't any online storage locker that still had your back.
I like it better when you've got a copy of your data, and they got a (encrypted) copy of your data.
The chances of both of those going wrong at the same time are pretty slim.

Ya
Encryption will start to become more practical as bandwidth opens up.

Wish they'd do that here...man is it slow!

Encryption for a calendar sync can be a dog. Plus it chews through battery life.

They need to do that on the server...oh you don't want them doing encyption on the server that means they can read your stuff!
I see your point.

3:08 AM
Ya, I hope Verizon kicks the crap out of AT&T cause AT&T is draggin their tails as far as bandwidth. This Tmobile case only officially outed their lazy anti-progressive attitude.

I got Verizon...but they're slow here, we got DSL...

I was reminded of AT&T tail draggin when someone at lunch brought up the leaked memo.

What leaked memo?
from AT&T?

I was thinking about Verizon rolling out FIOS
Ya, AT&T's leaked memo

Fios? They won't bring that to my area...

3:10 AM
It mentioned the actual cost of rolling out 4g to the whole country and it ends up costing like half of the cost of buying up Tmobile

Our connection is faster than dialup, but the place I used to live had one of these little local ISPs and they were insanely fast...and it was just a cable modem.

A lawyer forgot to redact it before posting it to the Fed's website a while back.

snicker
:)

Yeah, cable rules down here in Texas also.

Here we get like 2 something down...
And like 1.5 up
And there I got 20 up
and 15 down
I didn't even order cable TV it was so fast...I didn't need it.
How fast is it in Texas?

3:12 AM
I had to at least order basic cable.
It's 12Mbps

I knew I had something there!

Some places have access up to 24

It was this little cable company called Atlantic Broadband...

Ya man.

Phew

3:13 AM
The underdogs are scrappy.

I wish we could get'm here...they were relatively cheap too...
But that said...
There was another place in town that was even worse than the place here...
WinTelData or something like that...
Oh they were awful...
Well see ya later nice chat'n with ya
I gots to get some sleep.

ya

The sun goes down in Pennsylvania a bit earlier...than it do in Texas
later!

hm, any mac users awake?

morning @DMA

@Sathya Did you see the India light picture that was going around Facebook? Amazing!
... I will try to post it here in case you or others haven't seen it...

@WilliamHilsum yeah, that's fake though..

@Sathya Seriously!? Damn... I fell for it! When I first saw it, I thought it was like the Blockbuster advert!

> India at night, satellite view. This image is a composite showing the change in illumination over India from 1992-2003. Satellite data from 2003 is coloured red, 1998 is coloured green and 1992 is blue. The three data sets are composited to form the image.
@WilliamHilsum I know.. I thought it was real till I came across this

7:25 AM
... ok... I feel stupid now! I wonder how many others fell for it :/

@WilliamHilsum don't feel stupid! I thought it was real too! Lots others are thinking it's real as well!

Heh, I had a hard time believing it was real. But I've been to India. . .

@Sathya Well, still an amazing picture!

@WilliamHilsum yep!
@surfasb .. and I've been to Austin :)

@Sathya Then that picture should remind you of the Longhorn stadium at night!

7:31 AM
I just remembered why I don't believe anything I see on social networking sites.

@Diago The older saying is, "Don't believe everything you hear."
Some things don't change heh?

@surfasb aye

@surfasb Agreed, it needs to be modernized however.

@Diago I like the older versions. It's a conversation starter. Like why we still use a floppy disk for the save icon. . .
Or the whole tradition of weddings

Lolz.
I haven't looked at it that way before.
@Sathya When you have a moment pop into the Watch list. I need your thoughts.

7:46 AM
FYI for you SUer's that don't pay attention to the gaming blog, SU apparently has the 2nd most average views per question (see 2nd image)

@DMA57361 nice!

yeah, quite interesting. we're also alarmingly close to 100 000 questions :)

indeed

need to build a counter for that!

lol

hassuperuserhit100000questionsyet.com

maybe the name needs work ;P

returns "total": 99491
so, @DMA sharpen yer JS skills ;P

hehe, could do

I am seriously losing my sense of humor on meta lately.
On all of them actually.

7:54 AM
yeah, I know what you mean... :/

and

A: Discussion of Beta software is against the FAQ

DiagoActually your question was meant to be closed as a duplicate since it was asked earlier already, and that question was left open with the same warning. The reason we do not allow questions around Beta software, specifically with regard to Apple, is due to the fact that all Apple Beta Software is...

I am not even going to list the one's on Meta.SO

Am I being crazy?... I can't find what is wrong with this - accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/… - it is £250 which seems very cheap for a 24" IPS! ... I sent back the monitor I won as it kept playing up and I have a voucher... it would mean spending about £100 more, but, it seems like a very good screen
When I last looked up IPS monitors, they seemed to be a minimum of £400-£500
@DMA57361 thanks

@WilliamHilsum:dell occationally has pretty insane sales, so its plausible

8:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek It doesn't even appear to be sales.... I am rather shocked, but, I am doing more and more programming and just getting so fed up of my 18" monitors

@WilliamHilsum: They have weekly specials. I got my monitor and printer at less than their 'it fair sale' price

It is even cheaper from Amazon! I really want to buy this, but, don't know if I can justify the cost!
Ahh... I should be saving up for a mortgage and a new place to live... No matter how much I want it, I can't justify spending £500 on monitors! (need to buy 2 - the ~£130 voucher)

@WilliamHilsum Do you have a direct link to the monitor your talking about on Dell? I want to check the SA price?

@WilliamHilsum Thanks
Bleh. No pricing available.

8:27 AM
bleh
i wanna skip school tonight

@Diago I thought you only buy shiny units with pictures of fruit on them!?

Anyone want to try and salvage this question.... I have no idea where to start :\

Q: deleting password

michellei wanted to erase the like permanent storage for the password of MySql 5.1... i dont know where it is located..when i re-installed it, its asking for the current password... and its says that there is a file that store that password and needs to be erased... pls help

@WilliamHilsum Yeah. But the high end Dell's are built by the same company that does the Apple one's.
They are actually the Apple recommended alternatives. Except price wise they are normally the same here.

@Diago I can understand that... There isn't that many at all world wide.
@Diago I have protected because of those spammy answers... Seems like anything about resetting passwords attract them... and am editing now... I think the asker has abandoned the site, but, I think I know what they are asking.

@WilliamHilsum Thanks, it might be a question worth keeping before I hit the delete button on it.

Tried to do it... Hope that is good enough to escape the delete!

8:37 AM
Nice work

thanks

9:36 AM
yeah, I might be bored at work :P

@DMA57361 ahahahaha

well I'm changing jobs soon and I'm mostly stuck writing procedures up instead of actually working, so yawn

@DMA57361 ah, see ya soon!

@Sathya see me soon...?
oh
leaving

@DMA57361 you said you were leaving :-s

9:39 AM
as in "I'm quitting this job entirely", not as in "I'm about to go home for today"

@DMA57361 ahhh my bad
not too many days remaining right?

about 3 weeks, so not very soon... but not far

I'd imagine you've set up a countdowns for that too :p

haha, it's tempting now that you mention it :P
but there's no API or anything for my job, so meh

dreads having to do that for his dad's company when the time comes
'There's a stash of old IDE hard drives in the second filing cabinet'

9:45 AM
hello

@HackToHell morning

does a crt monitor hiss cause of humidity ?

@DMA57361 good noon ! :)

not as far as i know
90% humidity, old cranky CRT, and no hissing

9:47 AM
it is 3 yrs old
maybe cause of that
it died down , once it got heated up though.

I'm quite sure they haven't made CRTs that recently >_>

gr8 then it's older !

7-8 years might be a better bet
but no, hissing isn't normal. High pitched whining is possible if its really old, and you have good hearing in that range

7-8 ? wow that's super old !

the interwebs say its bad forums.vr-zone.com/hardware-depot/… but giving it some gentle percussive maintainance helps

9:54 AM
so my good old monitor is gonna die soon :( !

lol
for certain values of soon
might have a few years left

hahaha, oh crap

@DMA57361 :p

Lance RobertsI think letting those who register have a 15-rep bonus which would allow them to upvote would help a lot. Upvoting is addictive.

I am glad to see I am not the only one that has started to loose his cool with Meta.
@DMA57361 From my lovely company proxy: YOU HAVE BEEN DENIED ACCESS TO THIS SITE

@Diago heh, well I'm too lazy to host anything, so it's just from the public bit of my dropbox

@DMA57361 No problem. I'll look at it this evening.

it's not particularly great, so don't worry about it too much

@DMA57361 If you say so

10:51 AM
Ok, called up lenovo over the broken USB port (after a week), i was told i'd have an answer by 6... and... no call.
/me is getting rather grouchy at their tech support

11:29 AM
well... this population thing is mildly ...worrying, I think... apparently I'm the ~79,542,778,924th person to have ever lived... O_o

4,700,096,272 here >_>

oh, I was 4,769,330,291st when I was born, but 79-whatever Since History Began™

how'd you get that? >_>

it's underneath the first one...

ahh
79,435,602,293

11:36 AM
worryingly, if you put today as your birth day and do some maths, apparently ~8.4% of all humans ever are still alive...

oh well... it's not like we're running out of space or anything :P

hehe, it lets you select a date in the future! I am someone who is not even born yet!
Don't know why I thought that was funny :/

at worse, we just start sending people to SPACE!
well, it was

@WilliamHilsum lol, might be useful if you were expecting a kid and wanted to know what number they'd be in advance or something :P

11:45 AM
@DMA57361 Good point!

my daughter is 6,575,895,618 / 82,486,714,031 - quite a distance from my own :/

11:59 AM
wow.

@Sathya ?

@DMA57361 your last chat about your daughter - about 1.7 billion born since you were

oic, yeah, it's quite a heafty jump
it's more like 2.9billion too, if you look at the "people alive ever" number, so that's 1.2 billion who have died in that same period :/

@DMA57361 that;s a lot!

yeah :/
but such is life, eh?

12:03 PM
or death

lol, indeed
hmmm, another strange pay-scheme attached to an indie game bundle → indieroyale.com
like the humble bundle, but instead of having to "beat the average" to get bonuses you can pay over the odds to make it cheaper for other people (or, if you don't, eventually make it cost more)...

2 hours later…
2:26 PM
@DMA57361 so you were born in ~ 1984 :) wolframalpha.com/input/?i=born+1984

yeah, the "27" on my profile would tell you that too of course

@DMA57361 i am just playing around !

it catches spelling misteaks ;)

2:36 PM
typo !

dosen't count if its ironic

how come it is ironic ????

cause its an intentional typo

2:54 PM
no no no !! why must it be intentional ?

else it would be ironic the wrong way
and thus not cool

probably the not cool one

We should probably rethink this question.

Q: Should I keep my swap file on an SSD drive?

Steve RoweI'm considering getting an SSD drive to run as the primary OS partition. As I understand, this should provide a substantial improvement in performance. My question is this: Should I leave the swap file on that drive? The swap partition will be largely random seeks and so should benefit from t...

The answers there blow.
I like the Server fault answer here myself.

A: Any benefit or detriment from removing a pagefile on an 8GB RAM machine?

quuxTL;DR version: Let Windows handle your memory/pagefile settings. The people at MS have spent a lot more hours thinking about these issues than most of us sysadmins. @surfasb probably similar to this one here superuser.com/questions/240200/are-ssds-worth-the-money
really outdated SSD stuff

This server fault answer should be the pagefile link to own all pagefile answers.
I was looking through the SSD and pagefile questions to find a better answer we can use to answer SSD/Pagefile Dupes.

yah, looks like a good answer indeed
cba to read through the whole stuff though
:P

Q: Are SSDs worth the money?

bendewey Possible Duplicate: What are the pros and cons of a solid-state drive? I've been hearing a lot of hype about the SSDs recently. I'm planning to buy a new machine as soon as Windows 7 gets released. My question is are SSDs worth the money on a new Windows 7 Laptop?

That one isn't bad at all. There is a good answer, but you gotta scroll down.
It's the answer with 27 votes, but I think because there is no selected answer, the page defaults to sorting by oldest answer?

what kind of sorting do you use?
you can select that manually

6:14 PM
Yeah, I didn't know if there was a default

oh, idk what the default is, actually

Yeah, usually it defaults to"oldest answer" from what I've seen
But on wiki's sometimes it defaults to votes
I haven't paid enough attention to for a definite answer.

haha.. yeah, me neither

6:29 PM
Later today, I'll look into compiling a SU hosted pagefile answer to match the one at SF. I could of sworn @TomWj something or William had written a pretty good one that included paged pool memory and all that good stuff. But the SF one is good because it also has a link to Eric Lippert's post about virtual memory vs mapped memory vs physical memory and OS memory management from a native coder's perspective
