@Aigle Curious of your thoughts on this translation.
25 And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, "Any organization divided against itself brings itself to destruction, and any person divided against their self will not stand.
26 If arguing gets rid of an adversary, labeling each other, how then will their self esteem stand?
27 If by the lord of the flies I get rid of complaints, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges.
28 However if by breathing thought I cast out complaints, then upon you has come the organization of thought.
29 Or how can anyone get a word into the strong man's mind and destroy the confusion, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will destroy the confusion.
- Matt 12:25-29 Decoded Version

@Aigle We know Jesus, his works, and his words. If Moses knew as much or more than us then we'd have to ask very hard questions about why he didn't include details of the incarnation and the cross in the speeches he gave and the books he wrote.

@curiousdannii Why would he? ".....'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" Moses a man who did understand the law and lived many years with God .And The Tabernacle in the dessert.Understanding the sabbath. And was given the feasts. All this as Paul says a shadow of things to come,It's all about Jesus.I would say He did understand Jesus very well. But maybe he did not see the details as you say.

Q: What is the scriptural basis for gluttony being a sin?

ThunderforgeGluttony is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. What is the scriptural basis for it being a sin at all (much less a severe enough sin to be a deadly one)?

1
A: What is the scriptural basis for gluttony being a sin?

Dick HarfieldThe seven deadly sins are actually not the most important sins spiritually and there is no biblical basis for gluttony as a 'deadly sin', although there are fairly general precedents in the Old Testament for excesses of all kinds to be considered wrong. It is considered a deadly sin because, in e...

Dick, it occurs to me that the tradition/belief that you cite as dating from John Cassian precedes the sola scriptura movement that heavily informed the Reformation. Does that temporal distance have a bearing on your answer, given that the question is asking about biblical basis? – @KorvinStarmast

@DickHarfield Dick, I may not have my arms around "biblical basis questions." You raised the origin of the idea/belief/tradition of the seven deadly sins as being distinct from scripture and an artifact of the experiences of a particular class of believer ... which experience/tradition seems to have caught on.
@DickHarfield Some centuries later, the "sola scriptura" approach (which anchored some of Luther's protest and the Reformation as a whole) is the kind of approach that seems to me to lead to "well, can you find it in the bible" ... which seems to me to be what "biblical basis" questions have as an undertone. (And I may be reading to much into this).

@PaulVargas Paul, Tomlin does some nice work. My daughter and son in law got to meet him a few years ago at a youth ministry conference they went to. They came away favorably impressed.
@LeeWoofenden "This is the spirit of the commandment to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." Indeed it is, Lee. Nicely put, I'm keeping that one for future reference.

Hi @KorvinStarmast I think you may be reading too much into this. I think I wrote my answer before yours, so I was not responding to anything you said (and wouldn't anyway). I merely stated that there was no Bible basis and gave the consensus view of scholars on this. OP asked me to improve my answer a little, which I did.

@DickHarfield Indeed you did, and you saved me from having to mention more detail on the experiences of those who came up with the seven deadly sins framework. I am aware that you were not responding to me. What has me thinking (perhaps too much) ...
@DickHarfield Is that the question is asking about a convention (seven deadly sins) that predates sola scriptura ... but as you say, I may be overthinking it, and I liked your answer a lot. (It got a +1 from me). You are better at the concise answer than I am, I tend to use a lot of words.

@KorvinStarmast Thank you for the UV and for the pat on the back. I think we are finished here, are we?

@DickHarfield Yes, we are, and thanks again. :)

@KorvinStarmast before you go, would you mind tidying up the cmments on my answer?

@DickHarfield Consider it done.
