@El'endia Starman, @Caleb: I'd love to keep talking about the nature of Evil. Especially as it pertains to your interpretations of God's deeds.

Q: Answer deleted with, imho, poor arguments

user unknownI answered the question, whether dinosaurs are mentioned in the bible, with No. Here is the question, my answer was deleted. After my answer, the question was extended, that not just the word 'dinosaurs' is of interest, but whether there are animals, described in the bible, with the same charact...

So, tomorrow. Don't let me forget.

Q: How to un-sign a post without loosing valuable content?

CalebI ran across an interesting signature line on this answer: God bless you, a Catholic Priest. In general SE sites are pretty strict about not including signature lines in posts. However, the fact that this one identifies the OP as someone with some knowledge on this subject seems like a valu...

Q: Is premarital sex πορνεία (porneia)?

dancekThis question is pretty much a spinoff of What does the Bible say about sex before marriage / premarital sex? because its current answer depends on the assumption that premarital sex is πορνεία (commonly translated "fornication"). Not all agree, so I think this assumption is better explicitly que...

I bountied this. I'd really like to see a good answer.
Maybe one of the mods could clean up the comments a bit (I flagged some of the most obsolete)

Does anyone agree with this answer (not on Christianity):
-1
A: A single word for labelling someone a disbeliever in a particular religion despite them adhering to it

David SchwartzI don't think there's a word for it because this is the expected norm. The idea that the beliefs are what is important to religion is a modern view and still, in many cases, a minority one.

This guy is saying it's not normal to believe in the religion you practice...

@CiscoIPPhone I understand the point he's making, although I think its a stretch to say that paying lip-service to a religion without sharing all the beliefs is the "expected norm"
Even if there is truth to the idea that a significant portion of people self-identify by a religion that includes beliefs that they don't personally share, stating it the way he did is pretty cynical

3:32 PM
@CiscoIPPhone weird. People believe unbelievable things.

3:48 PM
@Dori, can you do a favour (of sorts) for me?
I was going to ask Hedge, but she is not here. I need a post deleted from area51 (for months now).

interesting definition of paleontology, but that's probably the rule now ...

yep
they don't allow my type..
those who don't believe in evolution/it's related disciplines but still like to study "ancient" life :/
brb

not sure why you need it deleted though ... your question is valid, if not liked

4:04 PM
"If you are one who disagrees in matters of belief and opinion on prehistoric life and evolution, a Stack Exchange Q&A set up specifically for that subject isn't the place for that type of debate and discussion."
how does that compare to Christianity.SE?

Q: Are questions from atheists welcome here?

FabianThere are quite some posts here on meta about questions asked in "bad faith". I get the distinct impression that questions asked from an atheist perspective are not really welcome here. The posts mentioning questions asked in "bad faith" did not cite specific examples, so I am left wondering on w...

@CRoss the OP of the proposal wasn't too happy about the question. We aren't exactly the best of friends either, so to better relations, I'd like my question removed.

@RolandTaylor fair enough

BTW I agree with you that it is a valid question, and it's only fair that I should be allowed to ask it without 9 down votes, but what more can I expect, you know?

4:19 PM
yawn.

;)

@RolandTaylor meh, Area51, like meta.SO is an opinion zone. People downvote what they dislike. You have no right nor reasonable exception of not being disliked.

lol
yes I do :D
I'm pretty :D
(jk)

what does creationist palaeontology involve @RolandTaylor? I'm curious

@CiscoIPPhone it's the same as normal palaeontology; without the evolutionary mindset.

4:25 PM
plus the biblical mindset?

Beat you... with a what? :)
grabs a mop stick

P.S. I'm well aware that you want to argue BeatMe :). I've seen the room you usually hang out in ;)

;) Unfortunately altough my account on †.SE is named Sven

I'm aware of that as well

4:27 PM
good ;)

but your avatar is the same on both

well observed :)

my avatar... is hungry

off-topic: has anyone else listened to NEEDTOBREATHE's new album, yet?

@RolandTaylor, just I understood you right, you would like to be a paleontologist, but think the discoveries of your "collegues" are false?

yawns

i just wonder because i thought paleontology is basically the opposite of creationism, maybe you can educate me ;)

@BeatMe so, you would like to spend time on Christianity.SE, but believe that our beliefs are false?
btw, would you prefer the mop stick or a base ball bat... if the latter I need to go buy one

;) i like you ^^

4:34 PM
@BeatMe I would, but I don't know if you would actually believe me :D
aww thanks :D
I like you too :D

there is a simple way to make me believe ;)

Creationism is compatible with palaeontology just as much as it is with archaeology and brushing your teeth :)

you mean certain points of paleontology

In other words, so long as you're not veering into territory that has nothing to do with the actually discipline, then fine. So in this case, evolution, on the scale imagined by many, is not compatible with creationism, but palaeontology, the study of fossils, is .

btw, is it palaeontology or paleontology

4:37 PM
ae
is the correct british spelling :D
(:P)
americans can use eo

according to wiki "including organisms' evolution and interactions with each other and their environments (their paleoecology)."
and estimating the date of these fossils is included also
both you claim to be false (i guess)
but hey, i'm not here to argue
today ;)

just because an extended, pro-evolutionist definition, tells you something, doesn't mean that the core, non-biased definition, means the same thing.
@BeatMe oh well in that case, today will never end as long as I'm here ;)

where would I find a core non-biased definition?

I'm never here to argue :>
@BeatMe on Mars.
XD

oh, i replied to you
about carbon dating
your confident ;)

4:44 PM
"you're", and yes, I am.
Should I mention (for your sake) that I once believed strongly in evolution?

oh thats interesting
but I think the others would appreciate if if we change the room ;)

lol
I, for one, would not.
simply because you will not get what you want from me :D
tit for tat

what do I want from you?

you've met your first bajan
@BeatMe my money :O
you want me to go into a dark alley so you and your gang can jump me and take all my money from me :O

you got some for me? :P

4:47 PM
lol on a serious note, I've seen what "Sven" does, and I'm not willing to play along :)

fair enough
altough i'm really interested what made you change your mind ;)

See, I've learned that there are some of us who are not actually seeking an answer, but just a bit of entertainment at the expense of those we think are less educated/"correct".
The day you say "I seriously want to find God", and mean it - I'll be there ;)
@BeatMe a long process of realization.
and loopholes too numerous (and deep) to go into

so you started as christian, believed in evolution and now are creationist?

yep :)...
no wait...
wrong
I started out a confused regular person... believing in God and evolution, but not knowing Jesus personally...
then I got to know Jesus...
and after some years of fighting to know the truth about either side...
I dropped evolution in the incinerator.

interesting, it was the other way round for me ;)

4:52 PM
(Now I'm haunted by its angry ghost... screaming "BEAT ME WITH A MOP STICK!"
Ahhhh that explains a lot.
It's people like you that keep me going.

we have something in common :D

I'm very saddened by people who meet the same fork in the road that I did, but end up just turning back :(.

you could not have said it better
but I guess thats the case for everyone as we all know, our truth is the only one ;)

yep
we humans are a very narrow minded bunch

but actually I feel kind of free now ;) not beeing framed by a book :P
but we should really skip that or go to the other room

4:54 PM
and those who promote open mindedness are only open minded until you're a Christian or creationist

or even better, do some housework :D

@BeatMe you probably have not met the Spirit of God...
He's not so much of a.. book.

probably not, but I haven't met any other god either ;)

I actually have some things to do as well, so I guess we can put a cork in it :D

sure

4:55 PM
if HedgeMage was here I'd be talking all day :D
@BeatMe there aren't any others...

thats what you say ;)

unless you want to use the term "gods" for us, God's children.
but that would get us stoned irl...

whats the saying, "i just believe in one god less than you"

at least in this room
OKAY... I'm gone for real :D
cya

bye

Q: Asking for Trouble?

James HillCan groups of people with drastically different beliefs be grouped together under a single name - Christianity (no matter how culture defines the word)? If a Mormon asks about the eternal nature of God, and a Protestant Christian answers using the 66 books in his/her Bible, then they will/could ...

5:54 PM
hola peeps
Good morning @BeatMe. How are you today?
@Flimzy I appreciate you fixing my typos. Thank yiou.

hey @JonathonByrd how's it going with you?

purty good. been getting steam rolled by client requests tho

as long as they're paying client requests, it's a good thing :)

@JonathonByrd: That's why I'm here :) Trying to earn the Copy Editor badge... hehe

@JonathonByrd more amused than yesterday
your answer was really enlightening ;)

5:59 PM
@a_hardin lol. not lately I'm poor atm
@BeatMe you understand that amuse means to not think

@JonathonByrd but you should probably add a note that your answer only represent your point of view, otherwise you should add sources..
@JonathonByrd therefore I could not help me but downvote your question, regardless of the claims you made

@BeatMe I expected you would show that kind of respect

how is that disrespectfull?

@BeatMe because the question asked for my opinion. I gave my opinion. you downvoted my opinion and not the fact that I answered the question

answers should not be opinions

6:08 PM
thats trolling
the question asked for opinion
you need to take up your argument with the question

@BeatMe When the question is "how do people in group x reconcile y" and someone says "I'm in group x, and this is my opinion of how y works", then the opinion is a valid answer

alright, downvote deleted ;)

@BeatMe thank you.
again, I'm not looking to prove or disprove ANYTHING on this website in regards to science
that's not what this site is for
even tho my answers always cause dissention because they are opposite of the mainstream belief

you're using science to prove your theories
x is wrong because of y, therefore z

The question asked for my opinion on a scientific matter

6:13 PM
maybe you're right and i'm just too stuborn right now ;)

7:12 PM
I made a comment on this question saying I'd look something up. I never got around to it. Could someone please remind me at the weekend (or Friday night).

Q: Who was Melchizedek

RaphinkMelchizedek ("King of Justice" in Hebrew) is mentioned in Genesis 14 as receiving the dime from Abraham, and breaking bread with him: 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. 19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be A...

Why do those links sometimes work and sometimes not?

@TRiG: They only expand when they're the only content of your message. I'm not sure why it's designed that way

Odd.

Q: How should we use the law tag?

Man @richard you're all about pushing buttons these days!

@Caleb: The last paragraph of your answer here seems to have a typo... I can't tell exactly what you meant, so I don't want to edit it myself:

A: Asking for Trouble?

CalebWow where to begin. First of all, nobody is making you participate. If you don't think the concept has merit, just close the browser tab and go on your way. Nobody is shoving this on anybody else. The community requested it through Area 51 and the community here is shaping it. Secondly, you sho...

@Flimzy It probably does, but since I know what was in my head I'm having a hard time seeing what it doesn't actually communicate.

the first words
"In want..."
did you mean "I want" or maybe "In wanting"?

@Caleb Oh, the IVF questions? Well, they will come up at some point... I don't expect too much... "controversy" over those.

Nevermind got it

Or maybe I'm just not reading it correctly
I suppose "In want" can be gramatically correct, now that I think about it
it's just not as common of a construct
so if that's what you meant, the I apologize... :)

10:17 PM
How's that?

@Flimzy Wow. I just automatically translated that as "If you want". Didn't even notice it!

@Caleb: That's more clear :)

@Richard IVF, rapture, translations --- all in a days asking.

Well, I came to realize that he could have meant "In (the state of) want..."

@Flimzy Thanks for the catch.

10:19 PM
It's fun to see the number of bounty questions growing

@Richard That's what I originally meant, but it's not what I typed and my brain didn't even catch it when reading through looking for a typo. I think the new version should be more clear as a whole.

The raptures question comes from a place of confusion, actually. I'm reading a book "Heaven Revealed" by Paul "Wild Guess" Enns.
(Well, the nick-name I gave him... it's not on the book.) ;)

haha

So far it's pretty straight forward, but about half way through it starts veering from the obvious and starts taking some pretty big leaps.

In some modern traditions of Christian eschatology, the Rapture is a reference to "being caught up" referred to in 1 Thess 4:17, when, in the End Times, the Christians of the world will be gathered together in the air to meet Jesus Christ. Rapture is used in at least two senses, in the sense of pre-tribulation views in which a group of people will be "left behind" and as a synonym for the Resurrection generally. There are many views among Christians regarding the timing of Christ's return (including whether it will occur in one event or two), and various views regarding the destination ...
hmm, I didn't mean to link the complete article, but rather the "view" part, where the destinction between 1 and 2 events is described ;)

10:43 PM
@Flimzy: I am tempted to close your original question as a dupe of the second one. If I do can you clean it up to stand on it's own a little better without referencing the old one?

@Caleb: Sure.
as soon as I finish cooking my dinner...I don't want it to burn :)

@Flimzy Done. Maybe once you get some answers to the second one and have an idea about the different between the terms, you can edit the original one to have a different angle specific to one or the other of the things meant by those terms and then it will be a real question on it's own and we can re-open it.

ok

@BeatMe it's very commendable how well you know the views you disagree with, and how you keep your tone non-argumentative! christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/2932/… is a great example!

I wish I could double-up vote
maybe I can propose that as a feature on meta.SO... a once-per-day double-upvote :)
Or maybe every 100 rep you earn, you get one more double up-vote

10:56 PM
@Flimzy if you want to +5, you can use a bounty!

@dancek: Not for 2 days :)
Did the 'reputation' tab just disappear on meta?
