Q: How to make this electrical main safe - spray on insulation

Matthew PKAn older home has a strung electrical main. The main connects with exposed lugs on the roof above the deck. Not only is the height and location unsafe, while working on the roof today I noticed that the insulation on the main electrical lines is deteriorated. This is before the meter and my main ...

Good grief.
"How do i safely kill myself?"

1:09 PM
Ok, this is worth a laugh. It's a photo gallery from a home inspector's "Wall of Shame"

1:20 PM
lol nice

2:04 PM
Is that corrugated cardboard in the second photo in the left column?

it sure looks it
nice fire trap

Yes, I believe it is. Some sort of Vapour Barrier

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK

@ChrisCudmore That makes sense now, thanks.

That's probably one too head bumps.
Not so much a "WTF" but dealing with low overhead

2:08 PM
that's a T
isn't it?

Maybe...

no.. can't be... cause that's a hot water heater or furnace exhaust vent

It appears to be in the middle of the doorway. I'm sticking with "softening the blow" as my theory.

agreed

Although the approved method is a ring of Care Bear Plushies.

2:12 PM
The photo is called "HVAC_-_Hat_on_flue_pipe_fs.jpg"
I think it's to prevent exhaust gasses from getting into the basement and killing you.
Wool absorbs CO, right?

@NiallC. Absolutely.

I emailed them.

about?

For the solution of "The great hat mystery"

2:59 PM
that says "Key Cleaner" in case it's hard to read

@BMitch Oh thats just wrong and hilarious

It is wrong. It's obviously a knife cleaner

Its multifunction!
i did that as a kid
once

I used a fork, but I have no recollection of the event.

i think i used a fork too
and all I remember is flashes
i mean i remember the actual moment of contact (not flashes as in sparks) and the tingle

3:12 PM
They ban buckyballs, but outlets carrying 120v right at kid height are no problem. We live in a messed up world.
All I know is that my family won't let me forget it because the parents were out of town and grandma couldn't figure out why the breaker kept tripping.

lol
There isn't a safety or regulatory issue. He'll just trip his main breaker.... same as if I draw the maximum from all the household circuits... a 100A main panel could certainly have 10 20A breakers in it. Try to draw them all to full load and you'll just trip the main. — Matthew PK 4 mins ago
how is regularly tripping the main breaker "fine" simply cause it isn't unsafe?

"Help! My husband is legally blind and we need more light in our bathroom."
If he's blind, you don't need any light.

3:27 PM
legally blind and completely blind are two different things

correct
legally blind can be horrible eyesight

3:46 PM
@NiallC. You beat me to it. I was about to reject one of those edits as too radical - I don't like it when people rearrange what other people said as part of an edit, personally.

@TheEvilGreebo I thought the original was a bit scattered, so rearranging was good IMO

different philosophies - I personally think editing should be limited to formatting, typos, etc.
i'm not disagreeing, its better

HEY GUYS
so before PUT begins: where's that canonical question about house inspections?

This one?
11
A: What are some of the best books/resources on home inspection for first time home buyers?

KeithSI can't agree enough with Greebo's statement that you should be present for the inspection. Even if you don't know why the inspector is doing everything he's doing, you can see that he's being as thorough as possible without causing damage to the house. Remember, Mike Holmes is called in when the...

A: When buying an older home that has recently been renovated, what should I look for in the home inspection?

KeithSIn addition to the basics, seen in this answer: What are some of the best books/resources on home inspection for first time home buyers?, the fact that someone's been messing around with the innards of the house means you should pay extra attention to the areas you know they've worked on, and wha...

Q: What are the most important things to check/do after buying a home?

MarioWe are in the process of purchasing a home that is over 20 years old. What are some of the most important things we should check/patch/do right away to make sure the home is running correctly and efficiently? We live in Canada, so keep in mind that winter is (always!) around the corner.

ermagerd, yes
@Tester101 ilu
Hello @ArgentoSapiens :)

Hi, Aarthi. We should find a way to make this chat room not look like a chat room.
I never stay in here for more than a few seconds because I'm at work!
Needs more plots.

They need a Chat API, so somebody can implement a super secret work mode chat app.

hmm
i think stackapps is working on that, maybe
chinstroke

6:59 PM
That inspection photo gallery makes me feel so much better about my house.

Welcome to Project Update Thursday

YEAAAAAAAAAH

I'm all chatted out today, so I'll leave you with a topic: homework may be frowned upon on SO, but it's well liked on DIY.se

:D

I got a new pair of 1KV gloves this week, but haven't done any work that required them yet.

7:06 PM
You can come repair my main lines, Tester

1KV?

Service entrance cable makes me nervous, even with the proper equipment.
@Aarthi 1000 volts.

oooh

Isn't that "medium voltage"?

They are insulated so you can work on high voltage lines.

7:08 PM
I thought, like wikipedia says, "Typically, the network would include medium-voltage (less than 50 kV) power lines, substations and pole-mounted transformers, low-voltage (less than 1 kV) distribution wiring and sometimes meters."

so due to a timing error on my part, we're having to hire out the wood flooring and the tile work instead of me doing it >:(

Must be that different fields use different ranges for those vocabulary words.

yesterday was a very expensive day for this project
Nothing makes a middle-class guy feel like a one-percenter like shelling out $24Grand in 24 hours.

:o

@ArgentoSapiens They are good for residential, and some industrial situations. Obviously, you're not working on transmission lines with them.
I feel like a mad scientist when I put them on.

7:16 PM
oh hey
those are dr horrible gloves
i'd wondered

Do they come in other fashionable designs?

@MatthewPK I don't think so, but you wear your leathers over top when you're working to protect them.
And always, pressure test them before working.

7:33 PM
huh that's really cool

Stars make it too easy to take a comment out of context. :)

:D

Here is a cool video of a guy working on a transmission line.

and here's a cool thing i discovered on tumblr today:

8:15 PM
Looks like we're all pretty chatted out.

8:53 PM
I'm closing up early:
Thanks for joining us for PUT!
