12:25 PM
Good morning

12:37 PM
Good morning!
I did the spray popcorn yesterday. Pretty awful job if I do say so myself.

Popcorn ceilings are awful by definition...

I think I can knock it down some today and help it a bit. Definitely going to do a product review on that.

;)
how long did the can last you

I don't disagree. After I bought the stuff and started preparing the kitchen for popcorn-ageddon my wife is like "Maybe we can just leave it like that" (primed)
@TheEvilGreebo Few seconds. I didn't figure out the technique until 3 or 4 cans in. And then I still kept screwing it up. Once I was almost out of cans I got better.

Got pix?

12:43 PM
Working on it. I haven't taken one of it dry yet. Tech is a beautiful thing but I don't have an upload to diy chat button on my phone yet

Slacker!

actually texture wise that looks pretty good
matches the patch at the top of the pic
looks... elevated but I guess that's just the lighting trick

Yeah, I'll get a closeup later. It's pretty heavy on the front edge (where I started)
The can says to keep 12" away from the ceiling. By the end I was at 20" - works bunches better.

Probably the person who did the original job also wasn't the "proper" distance away
would affect the pattern

12:48 PM
I've spent a lot of time staring at my celiings. They're all pretty bad. If the color matched I think this one wouldn't be too glaringly obvious

1:39 PM
Popcorn ceilings are a great way to hide a lack of drywalling talent. I don't think I'd ever trust a builder that used popcorn. Their cheap cover up gives the owners years of misery.

No kidding. I don't have popcorn, but texturing... what do they call it when they use a sponge to create a ceiling texture? Anyway its done nothing to hide the fact that they didn't tape. I've got parallel cracks 2' apart in my LR ceiling (old 2x4 drywall sheets)
i just need to win the lottery so I can gut this place...

Oh yeah, the drywall (especially in the bathrooms) isn't great either. I think that's the downside to DIY, you can't just look past something like a wall, ceiling, or tile floor. I was happily ignorant for years!
This one's my favorite. I think the previous owners redid the tile. It's impressive that they cut it so well, but....

bit backwards there yeah

g'mornin!

1:55 PM
The g in "g'mornin!" - is that meant to be "good" or "goddammit its monday" ?

@TheEvilGreebo ...yes? we'll go with yes.

The fate of millions hangs in the balance on your answer, so be careful...
Ah, evasion. And early in the AM too. I like it!

@TheEvilGreebo heh never let it be said i'm not good at what i do ;)

Perfect management, love it :)
Good grief - ADT just called me at work to try to sell me a home security system
First he wanted to get all chummy, asking if I watched the game last night. "Can you get to the point please, I'm at work here..."
Then he started his pitch, "Ok you're calling me at WORK to try to sell me a personal product for my home. Get this number off your list. click"
sheesh

@TheEvilGreebo this is when living near DC can have it's advantages. "I don't buy anything over the phone, and don't have time while at home, why don't you have your sales person stop by my office during my lunch hour"... quickly lookup an address to the local NSA branch

2:10 PM
rofl
They are just down the road ... ;)

one of my old bosses used to run a team of wireless security auditors, they would show up in an unmarked van in a parking lot to your office to see what they could break into.
one of their clients failed to mention that the NSA worked a floor above them

oh i bet that went over well

nothing like being surrounded by a squad in bullet proof jackets and high powered rifles that you don't know about until the "passer by" waves the all clear

Sometimes life is like a spy movie!
@AarthiDevanathan handed out some pencils on Sat

@SteveJackson pictures!
awwww

2:19 PM
He got a little carried away

tell tell!
how did it go? what happened? reactions?

As you can see, the nice lady has three pencils.
It went fine. We did a few outside, people were mostly confused as to what kind of pencil this was. So we went inside - much better as I could check their carts and see if they were there for DIY stuff or fertilizer and lightbulbs.
Only one guy seemed really interested, chatted him for a couple mins.
Two guys refused a pencil. I'm not sure what they thought would happen if they took it.

lol pencils! SUCH A COMMITMENT

2:34 PM
The pencils were secretly imbued with a psycotropic compound which renders the holder susceptible to suggestions for a brief period, during which the distributor of the pencil, who's taken an antidote to the drug allowing him to handle them safely, suggests that the susceptible pencil holder visit our site

@TheEvilGreebo Wait...@AarthiDevanathan didn't send me an antidote.

@SteveJackson that you know of.

@SteveJackson In that case, you really should send me $1,000
its lots of fun, you'll enjoy it!

Pay to the Order of: The Evil Greebo
Amount: $1000.00
Reason: Fun!

your plus one might have questions about this check

2:39 PM
I'm not allowed to answer the door any more. I've been hustled twice. My wife is in charge of all fundraiser solicitors.

@SteveJackson Huh. It worked. WOohoo, road trip!

@SteveJackson oh no the girl scouts gotcha good huh?
@TheEvilGreebo yeah it'll cover gas. probably.

@AarthiDevanathanΨ No my niece gets all the GS money. Once was a high-schooler for a trip or something, the last time was a 10 year old.

@SteveJackson ruh roh. i was that HSer with the trip.
like once upon a time
not last week.

My wife knows all the kids in the neighborhood, so she knows who actually has a reason to knock on a door.
Yeah, I always feel bad for them, because it's a crappy gig. I use to collect as a paperboy and it was HARD to get people to give me the money they OWED.
I had one lady who was a couple months behind tell me all she had was a hundred. So I dutifully rounded up enough money to change her out and she had to admit she didn't have it. I was like 12, I didn't understand why you might lie about that.

3:18 PM
@SteveJackson :( patpat

@SteveJackson I think you're being "pat"ronized ;)

@TheEvilGreebo :O
very punny

My pleasure derives in no small quantity from knowing I make people groan in agony. :)

I find the more cartoons I watch the more hilarious puns become.

3:30 PM
@SteveJackson hurr hurr

4:10 PM
kartuns is the funnies

4:54 PM
@RebeccaChernoff what's the significance of outlined stars vs colored in stars in the chat timeline?

@SteveJackson the ones that are outlined are "pinned"
it means they won't get "bumped down" by later stars.

Ah. Thank you

(for 2 weeks until they're unpinned by an automatic process)

@RebeccaChernoff :(

@RebeccaChernoff Ahh... good ol 'upnd'

5:00 PM
Ask question. Get answer. Get offended that answer doesn't magically understand that you already did what answer suggests...

@AarthiDevanathanΨ ?

@RebeccaChernoff Captain Construction should be pinned foreverrrr

Captain Construction cannot be pinned - he's too awesome for that.

Maybe chatrooms need a logo :)

Chuck Norris wants to be like Captain Construction

5:03 PM
Maybe we can nickname @shirlock to Captain Construction so he can be our @jonskeet (of StackOverflow fame)

@SteveJackson sounds like a great meta question
0
Q: Don't you think Captain Construction should be our official logo?

The Evil GreeboDrawn by our very own Aarthi Devanathan in the DIY Chat room, this superhero depicts all that is awesome about those who engage in DIY. Sure he's a little rough around the edges, but don't you think he should be our "official" mascot?

:D

aha ahahaha ahahahahaha

*waits for his ? to get closed as "not a real question/off topic" ;)

I can't wait till you tell Jin to redo all the swag :)

OOOH I just ordered my swag package too
I want DIY Captain Construction swag!
hey - how can we see how many days running we've visited? I'm not sure I think I may have missed yesterday or saturday

5:25 PM
@TheEvilGreebo Check your user profile should have a visited tag

oh hey look its in plain site!
bonk own head

I've never gotten the consecutive visits badge, I always miss a few days a month.

Oh good I didn't miss last weekend, just every weekend prior

@SteveJackson coming into visit on the weekends for my badge means i linger on the site for hours. on my off-hours. :(

@AarthiDevanathanΨ Once email started coming to my phone, off-hours lost a lot of its old meaning.

5:39 PM
yeah my phone's still "dumb" for now. we'll see if that continues. I want a mid-range smartphone; something with wifi and that can text but i don't need/want a data plan.
might mean buying a tablet of some sort.

i could just leave the site up over the weekends and put on autorefresh I suppose

I had the same phone from 2002-2007. I'd start getting questions like "Didn't you get my text?" "Nope...must have missed it"

kinda cheatin tho

My last phone bit the dust due to what I think is a manufacturing defect, but they wouldn't cover it under warranty. Despite being extremely peeved off I got the same exact replacement phone because I like it that much.

@SteveJackson "Sir, not being able to withstand deliberate repeated blows with an 18oz framing hammer is not a manufacturing defect!"

5:49 PM
@TheEvilGreebo Bah! Back in my day they built things to last!

@SteveJackson quiet, old man ;)

@SteveJackson "That was the stone age, Sir. We use plastic these days."

Look at this calculator. Still like the day I bought it!

We offer to replace a volunteer's hammer with a rock if they don't learn to swing it right.

6:18 PM
@BMitch Get many takers on that offer?

Those who receive that offer and then refuse get the rock anyway, only its delivered in an airborne style, with several others for good measure.

6:59 PM
Its been a slow day and I'm bored.

@TheEvilGreebo this.
same here.

Entertain me!

@TheEvilGreebo ...
dances

what has four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?
--I dunno, but it's also got sharp teeth that you should run away from really fast.

7:07 PM
haha
watch the video ;)

7:24 PM
@SteveJackson so far, not yet, but we would probably have saved a lot of nails if we did
@TheEvilGreebo ok
and I call this one rock and roll:

@BMitch THERE's the little girl!
@BMitch Horrible - they should have used a Harley Davidson drum kit

@TheEvilGreebo :)

@BMitch @TheEvilGreebo You are both awesome. I award you +10 interwebs

man i love robot chicken

lady posts that her little brother is graduating boot camp in a month and what should he get him
My response "get him a hooker" wasn't well received, I think... otoh it was the same answer given by the only other boot camp graduate to reply... ;)

7:48 PM
@TheEvilGreebo heh.

I'll leave you with one last photo album to go through at your convenience: plus.google.com/109938202835872364257#photos/…
and with that, back to work, I've got to find the little girl!

@BMitch I am laughing frequently in response

hee. hee hee hee
