Well, it wasn't competitive, but yeah, some characters had the most ridiculous Combo Platter Power sets.

12:21 AM
Freeform would work better with a few rules: "Include the other players" "Posts must move the story forward" "No controlling other's characters", etc.

12:46 AM
Does the site have another question somewhere?
I just created the latter tag on the basis people have started asking us about specific actions

Not unless it's very recent.
I created the other Fate action tags a couple months ago, and specifically left out because there wasn't anything it made sense to tag that with.

@BESW Alright :)
I guess we have just the one for now

1:46 AM
I'm not sure this question should have the tag, but I'm surprised it doesn't.

2:02 AM
@JohnP any luck with FR?

2:52 AM
@waxeagle ping

@Grubermensch hiya

how do you want to do this? gchat?
or did you want to do voice?

@Grubermensch was thinking a gallery room here if that works?
anyone can see, only we can talk?

that's fine

3:01 AM
.@SamuelLJackson you up?

1 hour later…
4:19 AM
@BESW say what?
@BESW because they're not coming from a perspective of the players being the entire problem :)
"my GMing is great but these guys suck! what do I do?" would be more like problem-players
this question is "these guys are causing a problem, I don't think I'm handling it well either. what should I do about it?", coming from a perspective of wanting improvement of their own GM skills rather than merely making the people stop a thing.

I'm glad I was able to give an answer he seems to find useful.
It's the basic "Make your players your co-conspirators" stuff, with an extra helping of "But in horror you have to really mean it."

I have not yet been able to read it in full.

It's not perfectly polished yet, but it's hopefully a decent primer on getting horror started off on the right foot.

i am thrilled we have experience in this sort of thing
like, playing horror games that are actually confronting or a little scary
that is a cool thing as far as i am concerned

Yeah. And I've been drawing on my reading into horror RPGs a lot for other stuff too.
Because horror gaming is so fragile, treatises on it touch on elements of role-playing dynamics that other guides and studies often brush past.
Oh! I'm looking into that TV show Forever Adeptus mentioned. Its title character is a 200-year-old immortal who is perpetually 40 years old, and one of the secondary characters is his 70-year-old adopted son.
@doppelgreener The dynamic between young immortal father figure and aged mortal child made me think that there might be interesting potential for similar inverted dynamics in some of your characters.

4:40 AM
That does sound like an interesting dynamic.
What's on your mind re: implementing it in our game?

I don't have anything in particular in mind, just that we're dealing with PCs who have unusual relationships to time and family and age.
There's a bit of it in the Doctor Light/Stellata dynamic already, with the daughter outstripping the father socially.

Experiences that define my enjoyable experience at stack overflow:

Q: How can I get NVDA and JAWS to read out the Hans Hillen datepicker correctly in Chrome in forms mode?

doppelgreenerA while ago, a fellow named Hans Hillen created some accessible versions of the jQuery UI controls. The popup version of his accessible jQuery UI datepicker has been implemented in a prototype I'm reviewing for WCAG 2.0 compliance, and the popup version of the date picker is not behaving well in ...

There might be potential, if you want to go there, for PAL to have some sort of odd relationship as well.

What do you think of it so far? After 2 episodes, I think it has potential, but could get old quick (ironically) if some aspects keep recurring.

have problem, request help. guy tells me to give up based on citing something inconclusive from over a year ago that is outdated, and shown to be outdated based on information available in my question. i tell him that's unhelpful, and downvote his answer. i get a downvote on my question a minute later.

4:46 AM
@doppelgreener I've upvoted the Q, downvoted the A. For great justice!

@Adeptus It's got enough flexibility that it could stay fresh for a while, so long as it doesn't settle. The characters have enough depth and breadth to be explored and grown.

@Adeptus thank you for the upvote

The flashbacks could get tedious (see: Arrow) and they've set themselves up for a brick wall when they write themselves into discovering more about his immortality.
Also the ADR is awful and the procedural elements are 1980s levels of sloppy TV drama, not quite up to par for a modern CSI-raised audience.
Overall, I think it'd be best as a miniseries with a little less realism, rather than a full multi-season series.

5:02 AM
@BESW I think the procedural sloppiness is at least partly intended - he's supposed to know so much about death & injury that he can leap to (correct) conclusions from minor clues... or am I just being charitable to the writers?

@Adeptus I'm fine with him being all Sherlock Holmes "I always leap to the right conclusions from insufficient evidence just because I'm me." But they're playing awfully fast and loose with the actual procedures of law. Chain of custody on evidence is seriously compromised every week.
Most of his "solved" cases will get thrown out of court in a heartbeat.
I'm equally eager to see an episode where they actually deal with that, and to see an episode where they find the place all his clothing goes every time he dies.

@BESW up for light brainstorming on that horror question?
(probably not in main chat, but whatever.)

Will probably be very lite, but sure.

 Not a bar, but plays one on TV

I'm not a place to unwind after work, but I play one on TV.

5:26 AM
@BESW Ha yes, I commented on that. He must spend a fortune on clothes!

@Adeptus I assume this is why he doesn't have a cell phone.

@BESW He had one once, then he died, and it vanished?

Expense aside, setting up a new phone just takes too long.
Yanno, I'm getting lots of Forever Knight vibes off this show.

@BESW Yep, picked that one up.

6:15 AM
[amused] A 200-year-old guy just heard an unusual word, and immediately interpreted it for the meaning that's only 30 years old.
Unless he's a brony, or a Piers Anthony fan, Henry Morgan should think "unicorn's horn," not "winged unicorn," when he hears "alicorn."

6:57 AM

ONE DOUBLE OHHHHHHH
@BESW Where's this?

@IronHeart Forever.

This is a great answer: nice range of prevention steps, and good advice on not forcing tone, too. — Dewi Morgan 14 mins ago

user61230
I know that feelin'. Like bein' skrich't behind th'ears, 'tis.

7:35 AM
@DavidReeve @Aaron Yeah I'm just a Player, not the GM. I'll be more assertive this friday session, and we'll see how it goes.

7:50 AM
@doppelgreener I actually have thought of this a bit
there was a point when Ira asked me in character why Dr Light and Stellata looked so different, and I replied in character that she took after her mother,.....
after that, I thought that answer could have a couple different/conflicting meanings
I was not sure I wanted to do anything other than quietly make a couple different scenarios it COULD be as long as no one else was entirely interested in this back-story. for one thing, this is important back-story for someone else's character that I didn't want to decide on my own
also, it did not seem too important at the time, and I never did more than a little bit of speculation into it

8:07 AM
@BESW also sorry i got distracted by the stack overflow thing and that is a good point
@trogdor ok, cool. :) i forgot about that mother reference.

so did I more or less

i think it'll say something about stellata and be important to her backstory, but i think it will also say an awful lot about doctor light!

then you pinged me and I finally noticed that you pinged me a half hour ago
and I remembered that I had put a small amount of thought into it already

9:10 AM
so I would be fine with just cooking something up for that, but it had plenty enough to do with Stellata that I figured that if I did do anything I would give you the option to collaborate on it first.

2 hours later…
11:34 AM
The last weekend of this month will come during the Baha'i gift-giving/hospitality/charity holidays, and I'd like to do something festive for my RPG group that Saturday. Open to ideas.

so, is the plan for it to still be a game...?

Unless you guys want to do something else!
But yeah, I figured I'd just do something with a festive twist.

12:21 PM
@BESW Do you figure the one answer deserves the bounty, unrelated?

On the Endgame question?
No.
It's your call, but I think it's not backed up sufficiently to be good yet.

Didn't think so. Poke me if it becomes such.

Eh, the guy's given up.
One similar "Just houserule it" answer, albeit less formed, was already deleted from the question last month.

1:03 PM
mornign

Or thereabouts.

Morning

Arrrrghoooouuughphlarb
I feel like my brain has been scrambled

lol
@Grubermensch untouched.... right

1:42 PM
Morning

So many mornings.

Well, it is afternoon here, I was just on autopilot.

2:09 PM
All of the mornings
ITS ONLY 9 ?!?!?! :( sigh

2:25 PM
@besw ^

2:50 PM
Well, well, well. It's almost 8, guess it's time to start the day.
I think everyone should ping @BESW at least once or twice in the next couple hours.

Why are we pinging @BESW ? Oh hey @JohnP did you get a chance to check for the FR books?

Not yet. I have all day off tomorrow, so I will head by there. I need to pick up new paint as well, it's on the way.

3:06 PM
coolness

I ping besw whenever the whim catches me but it is in response to his ds"so many mornings" comment

Shoot me another pic of the cover, didn't screen shot it the last time.
@JoshuaAslanSmith I just want @BESW to log on and see a red number like 55 or something.

So third edition. Got it.

3:42 PM
Yes, I was going to say anything for AD&D would work, I really want the 3rd edition book

4:03 PM
The realmz
they be forgotten

Anyone got some thoughts on Magery and the spell system in GURPS? I've read several places that it isn't the best, but I'm not 100% sure why.

4:37 PM
@sevensidedie my only contention to updating 5e questions is that in the meta discussion about tagging for 5e and next it was stated that next specific questions would be retagged but left as-is and that their timestamp would be what distinguishes them as next questions
Next is still wildly available and it has specific rule differences, I honestly think it should be a sub-tag

1 hour later…
5:45 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager - GURPS Magic is very different from the Vancian system in D&D. Some RPGers may not like the spellcasting limitations in GURPS - as I recall spellcasters burn fatigue pts to cast a spell, so that casting a big fireball spell could exhaust a wizard. The magic in GURPS is also very "generic" as might be expected. Fewer imaginative names and oddball spells than D&D.

6:17 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I have no idea whatsoever of what you might be implying. 0:-)

@Grubermensch are you actually advocating for you org in character or are you just like saying, "hey I got these friends, they totally could take care of them"

@JoshuaAslanSmith I was actually going to offer that we store them in my grandfather's vaults in Baldur's Gate. It's a secure place.

TBH I'm not actually sure what I want to do, but I definitely don't want to give them to somebody else.

hahahaha
was it 2 or 3 black dragon eggs?

6:22 PM
Evening!

Perks of being part of an actual criminal organization: not a lot of trust among your fellows.
There were 2 eggs.

hmmm yeah maybe I might be okay with you storing 1 and the other one being given to the Emerald Enclave
the other 3 party members of course need to weigh in

[warily] There might be room for such a compromise.

200k+ backers, 8m+ backed And still a few hours to go
Last chance for anyone to get in on the biggest kickstarter party ever!

6:29 PM
@RobertF That doesn't sound too bad. I'm just trying to figure out if I should give the spell system a go, or if I should find an alternative spell system. I recall there's something called Thaumatology that deals with casting spells in a different way.
@Dorian Exploding Kittens? :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Yes

It's pretty crazy :P

We got ALL the stretch bonuses too
Including one funny surprise
That they won't tell us what we got lol
Also the last chance for anyone to play the game this year because it probably won't be in full commercial production till 2016
Also the last chance for anyone to get the kickstarter exclusive NSFW deck
And any of the other special stuff like the fancy 2 deck box or the secret surprise, but that's a given

ack, bad edit approvers

APPROVE ALL THE BAD EDITS!
If y'all can't tell I'm hyped, and I haven't even had my coffee yet today :3
But I should get goin on that caffeine because I can't write as well without it.

6:34 PM
@Dorian what's the source of your hyper?

@waxeagle Exploding Kittens is about to hit the end of its backing period!

@Dorian ah yes. It is quite exciting

yep, I've got it up in another tab :)

This is more exciting than counting down to the new year!
Wow there have been no new starred items in 2 days? Where's @BESW, this needs to be fixed.
3

6:41 PM
Fixed

lulz alrighty then

look at me, so meta

Woah... there were 40 new backers in the last minute
And it keeps rising at about that rate.
All the people who set kickstarter to remind them are rushing to back now lol

I wonder if they'll hit 100k%

If they're targetting 10 mil, they'll need another 50k or so backers
(the average pledge has hovered around $40 for the whole campaign)

6:43 PM
Math'd wrong
Yeah it's rising at about +40 backers per minute
at this rate, assuming people are going for the nsfw deck, we'd probably get around 500k added by the end, but not another 2m unfortunately.
assuming a steady average of +40 backers/minute, we'd get around +14k to +15k backers by the end

@dorian what?
nvm
yeah pass

I'm sure Reddit is helping.
Because they're running a Reddit AMA right now and that's probably getting so many upvotes it's undoubtedly one of the top topics on reddit right now.

I'd be pretty stunned if there was anyone left on Reddit who didn't already know about this

I'm sure there are lol
Or at least didn't know it was nearing the end yet
or something

yeah, that's one of my issues with KS. better now that I have a fully working phone. But i've missed reminder emails for ones I wanted to back
Speaking of KS, has this one been linked in here yet? kickstarter.com/projects/sandandsteam/…

6:54 PM

it looks pretty interesting, and I've followed Elsa on twitter for a bit. (Also, it's being published by Exploding Rogue which is d20monkey)

@waxeagle That doesn't appear to be in the cool stuff block

@Dorian no it doesn't, I'll ping BESW when he gets back re that
@Dorian heh, it refreshes automagically.

what kickstarter? or the chat?

6:56 PM
@waxeagle are we on for tonight or no?

because kickstarter doesn't refresh automagically, and that's what I'm hitting it for

ill chek with ken about his avialability

@JoshuaAslanSmith yes!

I'll post an event on g+

6:58 PM
pinkie's bettar

7:09 PM
Hey are there any changes when flying in medium or heavy armor (as opposed to flying in light or no armor) (Pathfinder)
I checked the movement types section of the pfsrd and it didn't say anything.

user61230
@BESW Maybe it'd be a good idea to sort out these time shenanigans ONCE AND FOR ALL

7:25 PM
Oh sweet
@Grubermensch you gave me my second silver badge with that star.

7:41 PM
Oh geeze... Since there's a housecat rogue in the one party I'm joining I just realized that I can have a medium flying race and the rogue can ride me into battle.

8:03 PM
@Dorian - Threw you an answer on your flying ?

Thankya @JohnP

I think it's pretty accurate, I went through a few different rules and interpretations. Most of that is taken from a thread over on paizo.
@Dorian - Got a co-worker that is a Brony and loved your pinky pie meme. He immediately identified both season and episode/plot.

@JohnP lulz Not enough of a brony myself to id episode and etc, but I do love the series :D
Can't wait for S5

He identified the keyboard immediately as applejack, but wasn't sure of episode.
I've never seen an episode, although he keeps trying to get me to watch one. :p

I knew the keyboard was applejack too
Coloring and the like are hard to mistake for most ponies

8:22 PM
Gawd, sometimes people are so uptight about nitpickiness.

isnt nitpickiness also uptightness?

Pretty much. It just irked me that I explained on the flight question that it's not RAW, but RAW can be interpreted as, then at the end reiterate that it's an interpretation not strict RAW, and got downvoted with the explanation "That's not RAW".
It also discourages any but a few select self professed experts from ever attempting to answer a question.

raw again
When i am god-emperor of the universe, RAW will be off-topic

8:40 PM
Ah, it just gripes me. I cite RAW, say "Here's how RAW could be interpreted", and get immediately slammed not for the interpretation, but saying that RAW says that.
Whatever. The gods spake to me and said "bad participant", so I removed the so obviously terrible answer.

I have been working on a setting, and my players actually seam interested, but I am running into the 'decker' problem, from early shadowrun (the game would not be in shadowrun, but its the same problem). The setting has deeply immersive VR and a bit of AI. How can I keep the table engaged when part of the table is in VR land, part of the table isn't, and at least one player only exists in VR land (that last one is actually a little easier to deal with)
as gm, shifts focus to the vr people, players of meatspace people go get a pizza
I guess that is an on-topic question, isn't it?

9:03 PM
Yeah, I would think so. How to keep participants in different scenes interested.

@Tritium21 are the people not in VR land doing something interesting?
The ideal is cut back and forth every few minutes
but if they aren't doing anything interesting, that's much harder

@waxeagle The intent is for there to be coordinated activity.

@Tritium21 are there coms across?
(I'm not familiar with SR at all (I assume this is SR?)

This is not in SR, its just the same problem
There...can be

I'm thinking inception might be a good model for your back and forth cuts.
if that makes any sense.
no coms across dream spaces, but it certainly has good examples of cutting back and forth cleanly between the various dreams

9:09 PM
@waxeagle With the booms, obviously.

(and examples of how people can be engaged where they are)

is writing a full on question for main

good deal. I don't know enough to answer on main though :)
I'm just spitballin

@waxeagle Don't answer then, or the gods of all that is good and right will downvote you.

9:12 PM

@JohnP oh I won't ;)

1d17
boo
posted the question

@waxeagle I will say though, that it really discourages people from trying to answer questions. I've pretty much decided to give up even trying any more. Not worth the aggravation.

@JohnP that's sad. Honestly, ignore those kinds of critiques, they aren't helpful, flag the comments are argumentative and move on

Last time i was active here, there was pretty much a RAW war going on, between parties that have strict, but different, definitions of what RAW means

9:18 PM
@Tritium21 yep, that's pretty much an ongoing and neverending RPG war...it's really not worth arguing much over and I try to steer clear of it. I'll try to source answers when a RAW tag is present, but that's as far as I go
@JohnP on a happier note, my currently in progress minis: forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/…

@waxeagle I would, but it's taken me almost 3 years to accumulate the meager rep that I have, I don't want to lose it to nitpicking high reppers that can't see the forest for the trees.

@JohnP I can appreciate that. just remember that it takes between 2.5 and 5 downvotes to counteract 1 upvote

@waxeagle nice! I haven't had much time at all lately to paint. Between baby and gaming and martial arts (Spring Nationals coming up), it's just been languishing.

@JohnP heh, my baby is literally pushing me to paint...but he's nearly 3

Can you see deleted answers?
@waxeagle 20 weeks here. Just started in swimming last week. Or at least the baby float and try not to scream form of it. :p

9:21 PM
@JohnP I can
@JohnP lol that's way early :).

@JohnP It's a good answer, and if the only objection to it is that it claims to be RAW but isn't, why not just remove the RAW claim?

You mean like so?

Yep, upvoted.

@waxeagle Mostly it's a class to get him used to floating. No actual swimming yet.
Apparently he's fine until you take him out of the water, or put him on his stomach on the kick board. Then he screams.
He really doesn't like being on his stomach, but hasn't quite got rolling over down yet, so it really makes him angry when we put him on his stomach. :p

@JohnP makes sense, it's cold out of the water
@JohnP heh, tummy time, though they don't like it, is important. keeps their heads round :)

9:30 PM
@waxeagle On a great day, he'll last ~ 2 minutes. On a bad day, 2 seconds. :p

Do you have a boppy?
if you hang him over the round part and put some visual stimula (something colorful) in front so he can see them it can give you a few more minutes

We've got a mirror, and a dragon quilt my mom made, and we put him over a long round pillow.

sounds like you're right on then :). It takes some times before they like that position. They get so used to their backs
plus they can see everything on their back

Yeah, I put him over my shoulder the other day. He arched back like a leaping salmon and cranked his head abt 100 degrees to the side to try to look up.
Evidently yesterday he was having a long conversation with the cow rattle.

good deal :)
those are important conversations to have. Gotta make sure your toys stay in line.

10:04 PM
So a while back I suggested an edit to this question to fix the fact that it was based on a faulty premise, which was rejected because it "deviated from the original intent of the post." Some time later, learning from previous experience, I posted an answer to this question to address the fact that one of the premises of the question was faulty.
I posted it as an answer because it "deviated from the original intent of the post." It has since been deleted, with comments that I should have edited the original question instead. What gives guys? Should we edit questions to fix faulty assertions, or leave them as examples and address the faulty assumptions with good answers?
Normally it wouldn't bother me, but not to point fingers, but one of the people who rejected the edit also voted to delete the answer so either some mods don't follow their own advice or there is some obvious guideline that makes sense which I appear to have missed.

Maybe worth a meta post?

Meta won't allow me to log in for som reason. I suspect it's due to soe cookie issue. Not worth the time to figure out, so I figured chat was the next best place.

Fair enough.
Answers should always answer the question. I flagged the answer you mentioned here for deletion, because it didn't attempt to answer the question at all.
Based on my understanding, what you put in it should have been a comment on the question.

@Dyndrilliac Do you have HTTPS Everywhere enabled? Smart money's on that's why you can't meta.

@Grubermensch I do indeed. That might be it. I'll try disabling it later and posting about this.
@Miniman That makes sense, but comments aren't permanent. It could easily be deleted and then someone might stumble on the question and if one of the other answers doesn't mention the problem, they might think that means there isn't one.

10:12 PM
@Dyndrilliac Well, the idea would be that the querent would see your comment and edit the question.
(Again, this is all based on my understanding of the principles involved.)

@Miniman The querent will also see my answer though right? They have yet to actually fix the problem with the question, so I doubt a comment would provide more motivation to update it. I would make the edit myself, but I don't want to inappropriately hijack someone elses question.

@Dyndrilliac Yes, but answers have to answer the question. It's like Rule 2 of SE.
@JohnP Incidentally, would now be a good moment to say I told you so?

10:44 PM
Sergeant Reckless, a horse that held official rank in the United States military, was a mare of Mongolian horse breeding. Out of a race horse dam, she was purchased in October 1952 for $250 from a Korean stableboy at the Seoul racetrack who needed money to buy an artificial leg for his sister. Reckless was bought by members of the United States Marine Corps and trained to be a pack horse for the Recoilless Rifle Platoon, Anti-Tank Company, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. She quickly became a unit mascot and was allowed to roam freely through camp, entering the marines' tents, where she...

@Miniman I removed two words. Two. Not one, not three, but the number shall be two. Two shall be the number I removed...
But yes, now would be a good time.

When is the Year of the Capybara thats the year for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTk688cXTsA

@JohnP Yeah, I wouldn't have thought it could turn a downvote into an upvote, but there you go.

@Miniman Probably because I was such a whiny little beyatch in the comments. I was not in a good mood this afternoon.

Ben
11:14 PM
I'll just leave this here...

@Ben I saw the Kickstarter last year but didn't back it due to lack of funds at the time. Honestly, I expected it to be more customisable than it is. Not sure if they overhyped it or I just overexpected...

crap, I just found the only way in PF to put Cha on AC (even if its at the cost of Dex)...
It's a revelation from an oracle mystery, a mystery that really wouldn't make sense for me to take.

Ben
@Adeptus yeah I will admit, it is a bit restricted in what you can do, but honestly I have had some fun with it. So far I've made 3 characters, for 2 completely separate games (DnD and Dark Heresy). I'm happy with the outcomes.
With a little customisation of course ;)

11:54 PM
@JohnP Only 7, and one was a comment on an answer.
