@Tritium21 The Java sandbox is broken!? :O
(and thus I demonstrate how little I have been following the professional developments of this language)

Uh... It seams java vulnerability of the week is gone... but it got so bad that at one point in 2013 it was not a question of if there was a vulnerability, but of what the next one would be
the sand box isnt just broken, it has been nuked from orbit

wow
that's about as bad as it can get
(well, until you reach a point like "the sandbox is gone forever")

12:31 AM
My wife has been texting me all afternoon. Apparently licensing is going well and she wants to take a bit of a vacation. ... this was understood with the FIRST 100 messages.
we are now on message 5165464968436168168168161684

sir i find this highly irresponsible

@doppelgreener Serpentine Owl? I want to see a Serpentine Serpent!

you are probably racking up a phone bill several magnitudes in excess of the totality of human currency available on this planet
it's like you want the global economy to disintegrate

Unlimited texting

... carry on then
@Adeptus is that something like a serpent except extra serpenty?

12:43 AM
Serpentine is a kind of semiprecious stone, also called false jade and other names.

@doppelgreener What BESW said. And yes.

Q: How do I add two integers together with Twisted?

GlyphI have two integers in my program; let's call them "a" and "b". I would like to add them together and get another integer as a result. These are regular Python int objects. I'm wondering; how do I add them together with Twisted? Is there a special performAsynchronousAddition function somewher...

this always lightens my mood

1:01 AM
(Worth noting though is that with spawnProcess, Twisted does provide a little support for CPU-bound tasks, by converting them into I/O bound tasks and then communicating with them the same way. But this is a good explanation nonetheless.) — Glyph Sep 6 '11 at 4:16
As a friend and neighbor, I'm begging you: Please do not spawn a process for the purpose of adding two integers. — IfLoop Sep 6 '11 at 4:49
this was hilarious

It should be noted that Glyph is the author and maintainer of Twisted, and he is in fact a genius with a weird sense of humor

i notice in the comments, this entire question is great
@BESW I have learned a thing. (Can it also be serpentine in the serpenty way?)

I suppose so.
(Join RPG.SE chat! Learn gemology!)

@BESW you have to learn a little bit of gemology if you're going to be leaving precious gems for loot
I now fondly recall my favourite NetHack item: the cursed rock.

I think most of my loot-based gemology knowledge came from reading Hardy Boys and Three Investigators and the like.

1:16 AM
The cursed rock: It is a rock. It's heavy. It's cursed. The curse is that you cannot drop it. This is all it does. That and make you incredibly paranoid about ever picking up rocks.

Presumably this means you can't be disarmed if you use it in combat.
The Cursed Rock would be a great name for a shady tavern.

cant be used in combat
just takes up encumbrance

So it's a loadstone, but more boring?
(Which is impressive.)

@BESW Well, in D&D it'd be boring as hell, in NetHack encumbrance is a big deal so the cursed rock means you can't wear the best armors, carry a great variety of gear and food, hold onto all your spellbooks, etc.

Can Nethack let you use it as a boomerang, though? "Thrown away and magically returns" is interesting in the "figure out narrative loopholes and exploits for mechanical effects" attitude of 3.5.
The loadstone gives you something to play with.
The cursed rock seems to just limit your options.

1:27 AM
@BESW I don't think you can throw it, because thrown items leave your inventory. But I actually want to try this now.
@BESW Yes, precisely. There are parts of the game that are just there to make it easier to die horribly.

@doppelgreener Isn't that the point of NetHack and similar games? "You will die. Probably horribly. But how far will you get before you do?"
Pixel Dungeon is my current favourite Roguelike (or NetHack-like) game. It's on Android & is free. I once got up to level 20 before dying, which was enough to unlock the other character class. Every other time, I'm lucky if I get to lvl 5...

1:48 AM
@Adeptus More or less yes I think so
@Adeptus I'm gonna try this one out. :D

2:29 AM
Pixel Dungeon's pretty nice, and also fairly easy to get into.
@doppelgreener Wouldn't a cursed rock be able to be dropped if it's not equipped? I thought that was most of what curse does.

@Smurfton Yeah, the cursed rock is unique. Cursed armor can't be removed, and cursed weapons fuse themselves to your hands, but a cursed rock simply cannot be dropped once picked up.

@doppelgreener Did you manage to throw it? How was Pixel Dungeon?

I'm not sure if it's the only item that has a curse preventing you from dropping it, but it's certainly not the usual kind of NetHack curse.
@Smurfton I don't have NetHack on this PC, so I'll have to find out in a few hours when I'm home.
Also, I'll similarly have to wait before trying Pixel Dungeon.

@doppelgreener Pixel Dungeon is only for Android, actually.

I ignore ... I am kinda surprised how many questions that blocks out.

2:34 AM
@doppelgreener There's definitely an Android emulator out there somewhere, though.
@Tritium21 That's weird; I haven't noticed a single [optimization] tag. On the other hand, I've never played nwod, and that's more than half the questions, I swear.

@Smurfton I have an Android, but I mean I'll have to wait until I'm home so I can download it over my home's wifi.

Makes sense.

So on both counts, I must wait until I am home so I can break into a dungeon and throw some rocks.

@Smurfton There hasn't been a WOD question in about a week
I stand corrected, 2 days

I asked a question yesterday (SO meta) and people keep on finding new and exciting ways to bump it.
Not sure how I feel about that.

2:47 AM
I think I've got the "brainstorming puzzles in Fate" thing set up and ready, whenever we've got at least three people to run it.

@Smurfton Feel pleasant; you started something people find engaging.

@Smurfton Its a good question

@doppelgreener @Tritium21 Thanks!

(btw, it wasn't a judgement based on it being constantly bumped. I looked it up, its a really good question for the whole of SE)

Q: At what point is a question not useful to others?

SmurftonI've been working on translating a program line for line from Turbo Pascal to C, but I've apparently made some mistakes, and the version I copied from wasn't a perfect transcription of the original program. I'd like to ask about certain sections of code that I believe have a mistake within them, ...

You saying that I should move it to meta?

2:52 AM
@BESW cool

SE meta, not SO meta.
Hello, Alex!

Hello!
@Tritium21 Throw the applets into the fire.

@Smurfton Not required

@Tritium21 I ignore the most popular D&D tags, so my main page is 80% greyed out.
I'll answer generic D&D stuff because I remember stuff and can do research, but any recent edition already has tons of people who are actively playing and interested to answer the questions.

What are the dotted lines in chat supposed to represent?

3:02 AM
I think since you tabbed away

The chat thinks you might not have seen the stuff below the dotted line yet.

yup. That seems to be it.

is it there right above your last chat post?
cause that's where it is for me

I have several and they slowly fade over time

Rather the dotted line denotes "this is where the last chat message was last time you tabbed away from this window"

3:09 AM
ah ok
yeah,.. just made 2 more XD

It's a place marker for where you should start reading from, to be helpful like BESW mentioned

that is actually kinda neat "here is a marker for where you might have last read to

not a new concept...

Yes,... but he didn't explain it the way you did

3:10 AM
Yeah it is neat!

(Also: is this a new kind of spam?)

yeah

@BESW Way ahead of you

HIYAAAAAT

Usually we get "Ethnic-named witch doctor made my boyfriend and money problems vanish!"

3:12 AM
[spin attack]

@BESW Sort of?

@BESW I'm parsing that as made your (boyfriend) and (money problems) vanish XD

That too.

@BESW Your boyfriend vanished along with your money problems?

Well, I certainly don't have a boyfriend.

3:13 AM
@Adeptus Your money problems vanished along with your boyfriend. :D

lol

@doppelgreener I'm parsing that as made your (boyfriend) and (money) vanish

@BESW Husband? You tied the knot?!

That's because of the witch doctor's spell! Aaaaaa

Funny thing is, I was under the impression that all answers that only have single enter breaks and and an email were automatically marked as spam. They must be learning.

3:14 AM
@Miniman well I know if my partner started sending money to witch doctors on the internet I'd start having second thoughts about them XD

Hi Brian

@trogdor instead of mod-flagging "this is obviously spam" just... choose spam. It engages specific operations once enough people flag as spam.

@BrianBallsun-Stanton mk, I am not sure I had that option

I was actually kinda confused, I was like 'I'm not meant to flag now that I can close vote' looked through close vote reasons for a spam option, then decided I should stick to flags

So which option would that be? Not the top of the list under spam?

3:16 AM
6 spam flags auto delete a post, penalise the poster 100 rep, and may lead to other bad things happening to them

@trogdor Brian left.

eh

Sorry, not the top of the list under flag?

@Smurfton the ping can bring him back

Poor Mirabel Coleman
Now she will not get any vampires to join her Vampire Kingdom

3:17 AM
lol

Like a demon must answer its true name etc

Which is bad because I'm pretty sure being a vampire is like multi-level marketing

Indeed, terrible.

@trogdor spam should be the first option in the flag dialog

3:18 AM
All I had was "Other"

fascinating.

It was literally the only option I saw

Weird

perhaps try to replicate and post on meta with a question.

But @AlexP, you don't want too many vampires, otherwise you'd have no food! That's why certain types of vampire aren't realistic.

3:19 AM
Did this happen after the question was already deleted, I wonder?

@doppelgreener That would make sense actually

@doppelgreener maybe? I don't really know

After I flagged, I looked at the close menu and it was like no

@Smurfton Well the classic WoD solution is "shovelheads."
Someone just made these vampires to be disposable minions, like, a day ago.
They don't stay around forever because that would, indeed, be a drain.

@doppelgreener Looks like it. I still have the question open, and attempting to flag it, only the other option is available.

3:20 AM
Honestly, most of my experience here has simply been the chat, and answering and asking a couple questions.

Ok, yeah, and now that I access the 10k deleted question the only option is other

So I don't know if it's a situation of rep, or me simply not seeing something, or what
@doppelgreener That sounds like exactly what I saw
Again, no clue

@trogdor you flagged it after the deletion of the question.

So trogdor you flagged the question and by the time the dialog loaded it was deleted and you were given the only valid flag option for deleted posts

ah ok

3:22 AM
Also my autocorrect just replaced trogdor with trouser

so if I see that I will leave it alone
fine by me
@doppelgreener XD

You are fine with being trousers?

yes

noted

also with leaving deleted posts alone
both are fine
I now know what they both look like

3:24 AM
Morning

"[Becoming a vampire let me] fight all my enemies which i later agreed to become [...]"

MMM English

So joining the vampire kingdom lets you become your enemies?

Make thralls: All the benefits of networking and merging, without compromising your goals.
@Magician [wave] I think I'm ready for the brainstorm/puzzle thing, once we've got three or four participants.

What's this?

3:27 AM
it's sort of a test of a mechanic of the Atomic Robo RPG

@BESW Cool! I'm most likely able to do it in the next few hours. But may spontaneously disappear if boss comes a-knocking.

the players run into a puzzle of some kind and use certain Fate mechanics to decide what it is

@Smurfton Trying to see how easily Atomic Robo's "brainstorm" mechanic can adapt to more traditional D&D-style puzzles.

@trogdor (and how to overcome it)

true
but first you do have to decide exactly what it is
does it have spike traps behind it? is it filled with acid?

3:30 AM
So who's in this? Do we have enough now?

So you're saying it's a procedurally generated puzzle room thing?

@Smurfton Kiiinda.

Cooperatively generated, I's day.

I'm not in; I don't know the first thing about Atomic Robo.

@Magician This is a better term for it

3:31 AM
In the brainstorm mechanic, you compete to establish facts about the puzzle which will inform the final conclusion about its nature (and thus how to solve it).

That's actually really cool. May I watch?

you would need to know a bit about Fate in general, not exactly Atomic Robo itself
we are just borrowing one of Atomic Robo's mechanics
@BESW I am in if we are doing it now

@Smurfton Naturally. We'll be doing it in the Fate room, when we have sufficient participants.

 Fate chat and game room

Good questions raised here should hit the main site too! Fudge...

@BESW Thanks for the link.

@BESW I can't help at the moment, but I can after ~6pm

3:34 AM
its 2(e1) minutes to midnight...

Does someone else want to look at this first post? I'm never 100% sure what to do about first posts.

we have lot of people from different time zones in here

@trogdor Or they say they are.

@Miniman It could certainly be a vast conspiracy

I've only ever seen anecdotal evidence Americas even exist.

3:35 AM
@Miniman You left the comment I would have.

@Magician I have been there, but I was always on a plane and usually not even looking out the window at the time
till I arrived, at which point I could have been anywhere

[ raises eyebrow at url ]

@trogdor Exactly! How do we know timezones aren't just those crazy Northerners trying to hoodwink us? Vast lands across the ocean...yeah right.

people say "you are in Phoenix Arizona" I think "just looks like a freaking desert"

There's a Mission: Impossible episode with that premise.

3:39 AM
@Metool You look like you're struggling there. Yep that was asked. It was spam.

I say I am from New York State, and people think Manhattan

@Tritium21 I think of the secret base under Ayers Rock from which the CIA is brainwashing me to believe America is real.

I say I'm from Washington, and people think DC. I think I win on that.

@Miniman If America isnt real, then how can there be a CIA?

@Tritium It's actually hosted in Canada.

3:41 AM
@Smurfton But that's a country, not a pair of continents

@Tritium21 Oh, the continents aren't there? I thought there was definite proof of Canada.

@Tritium21 If you were an organisation devoted to maintaining the fiction of an imaginary country, wouldn't you claim to be from there?

I think I am addicted to fake internet points

4:34 AM
Have you ever known that someone was vitally misunderstanding things, but you could not convince them that they were misunderstanding it despite your best efforts?

@Metool Ayup.

@Metool This...is half the internet?
2

@Tritium21 Can't agree with you there.

@Magician ok, 7/16ths of the internet

you're implying 7/16ths of the internet actually involves trying to engage in a mutual communication with the person, instead of shouting into an echo chamber and/or readily receptive audience about how that other person is a butt

4:41 AM
@doppelgreener 7/16ths of the internet the participates in discussions, then.

user61230
5:29 AM
I may soon have the pleasure of running Fate for a group of brand new, untarnished players.

@Emrakul Ooooooer.

user61230
I'm very curious to see how their approach to roleplaying fits with Fate by default.

user61230
We've had a lot of discussions here that revolve around the idea that Fate fits more closely to the way players want to play from the outset. I'm curious to see how it holds in practice.

Let us know how that goes :)

Yes.

user61230
5:39 AM
Shall do! Hopefully it goes well, too!

6:31 AM
@doppelgreener You and Dan won't be around for Geek Night on the first week of next month, right?

@BESW Saturday 1st of November?
I will not be here; Dan might be.

Okay.
Maybe we'll try A Penny for My Thoughts then; it seems like the kind of thing which would be easier --at least the first time-- with less Skype.

3 hours later…
9:54 AM
@doppelgreener Where'd you get your moustache? I can't find one nearly so dapper.

@BESW I swindled it! And gave it some stretching and squashing into shape.

Ahah. It's the jaunty angle I covet.

10:12 AM
8 more answers to a 5e gold tag badge.

Ooer.

@BESW oh my goodness, your new avatar looks wonderful. :D

I'm still not seeing it in chat.

Me neither; it'll take a while.

1 hour later…
11:27 AM
XD lol
that is amazing

Hm?

just look 2 chat bubbles above that
your mustache

Ah.
I have named it Eloquent.

lol
I would have named mine, but his name is already awesome enough,... at least in my head

I guess there's no way to just block questions with certain tags so that I don't see them?

@okeefe Go to the pages for the tags in question and see if you can't find an Ignore button.

5:05 PM
@Metool I don't see anything like that. Am I supposed to?

5:25 PM

Test failure, nobody here but you. The rest of us are ghosts.

Apparently that is the cast in the Overlook on Writers.SE I can't post anything
Trying to join the weekly writing thing

Yay, that's a 1,000 word blog post that I now need to bury deep, forget about, and then revisit to edit and revise.

9:41 PM
@lisardggY Ah yes, the "pit oven" writing technique.
@okeefe Go to your preferences page. At the bottom you can ignore tags by greying them out or hiding them entirely.

10:30 PM
Whups, borked the link. This is probably better.

10:58 PM
The 'Tabletop' section of TV Tropes' ludonarrative article is hilarious.
