Q: How can I optimize a factotum?

Brian Ballsun-StantonI'm playing a level 3 factotum in a Midnight game. The race provides an extra bonus feat and an extra 4 ranks in skills per level. The skills are taken from pathfinder, but we're keeping ranks from 3.5. What multi-classes and PrCs should I consider for my factotum to provide maximum skill benefi...

Q: How to tag different styles of LARP?

PureferretI recently posted a question about larp on the main boards, as I was curious about some of the different styles of larp that existed. Mainly how they handled combat. I was expecting three answers, or styles (Along with more detail than I could give): Full-contact, low-contact and no contact, whic...

Q: How does bonus damage from 'Instense spells' class ability relate to the 'Fire Shield' spell

MaconaEvocation Wizards in Pathfinder benefit from bonus damage to their offensive spells, but I am wondering how this relates to spells like Fire Shield. Intense Spells (Su): Whenever you cast an evocation spell that deals hit point damage, add 1/2 your wizard level to the damage (minimum +1). Thi...

Q: Presure point attacks

KhaalI am wondering if there are any classes, alternatives or anything else than roleplay to incorporate presure point techniques in DnD 3.5. @CRoss she works in a college dorm...likely a student using it for storage...
I'm just amused by the strangeness...
ok RPG.SE goal for the day, push q/day >6!
traffic is up again today as well :)
at least the average is higher than yesterday's...

It'll keep going up for a while, as it's averaged over 15 days I think

Well, 2 weeks to be accurate.

ah ok

What is the top-7 tag for on meta?

@Aether I believe its the top 7 questions to ask on a new beta's meta site?

@waxeagle Presumably the top seven "types" of questions (such as "is such-and-such on topic"), since there are more than seven questions tagged.

@Aether yes trying to dig up the page that talks about it

Groups have an amazing ability to self organize — not by following rules or hierarchies of authority, but through basic human nature. Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a spontaneous brainstorming session with a group of colleagues? Sometimes you just know that you’re at the start of something big — something important — when everyone is abuzz with ideas, collaborating wildly with enthusiasm and energy.

That’s how it feels each time a new Stack Exchange site is launched. Not only in the questions and answers that are posted, but in the back room collaborations where the self-governance is starting to take shape — in meta. …

@waxeagle Thanks

What is our elevator pitch?

Q: Write an Elevator Pitch / Tagline

Robert CartainoWe closed the domain naming thread (click for details). Instead, let's start with a killer "elevator pitch!" Joel will be blogging about the elevator pitch approach to naming, but to get you started: The Elevator Pitch This isn't as easy as it sounds. Imagine the user who will never read you...

not sure which one I like best

Exciting

I think thats my fave

I like it

"+4 to your Knowledge (RPG) checks"

@Aether nice, strong bonus for mid/late paragon...yeah that sounds about right (maybe if we advance far enough we can make a +6 for epic tier goodness)

Domain name tie-in? rpgknowledgecheck.com
Guys, how do I refer to someone's PhD students

"Grad students", usually.

3:38 PM
sounds too informal

(Although that also includes other kinds of students)
Then go with "graduate students"?
Or "post-graduates"

I've gone with this sentence: by a series of PhD students, under the supervision of Professor Alison Walker at the University of Bath
post graduates sound good

That sentence works.

What do people think about rpgknowledgecheck.com?

@Pureferret 1. is it available. 2. are you willing to pay for the registration/redirect service yourself (SE stopped doing unique domains for their sites a while ago)

3:46 PM
Yes. No
They did?

@Pureferret yes. basically they said that unless you reach x threshold (which is very high, along the lines of server fault) you won't get your own domain name. the issue they have is that it breaks up the brand...
(if my understanding of the problem is correct)

Let’s say, just hypothetically, that you wanted to learn how to bake a cake. So you go to the bookstore and you have a choice of two books. There’s a generic yellow book that is part of a series:

And there’s another book that stands by itself… it doesn’t look like a part of a series.

If you had no other information, which would you buy?

American audiences, generally, don’t trust series. They tend to believe that they want the best baking book, period, not whatever baking book comes in yellow. When they see a shelf full of yellow dummy books, they mostly say, “yeah, a bunch of second-best books.” …

that is fair enough

@Pureferret hang on that says exactly the opposite of the current policy..hang on

Friday night we rolled back the domain name of our first out-of-beta website. After less than 24 hours of existing on the internet, nothingtoinstall.com was reverted to its original public beta name – webapps.stackexchange.com.

We’re sorry for springing this on you at the last minute but – at least at the time – it felt like circumstances didn’t give us much choice.

With deep concerns about domain name choices for the 20+ ongoing public betas and some negative feedback about breaking up the network into smaller domains, we made the snap decision to roll back the nam …

A while ago, I wrote:

“Individually-branded sites felt more authentic and trustworthy. We thought that letting every Stack Exchange site have its own domain name, visual identity, logo, and brand would help the community feel more coherent. After all, nobody wants to say that they live in Housing Block 2938TC.”

Well, funny thing… that didn’t quite work out the way I expected… mostly because nobody could think of any good domain names. Believe it or not, “NothingToInstall” was one of the better suggestions. Ack. …

@BrianBallsunStanton Yeah...speaking of which we need to start packing...

4:16 PM
@waxeagle whens the big date?

@CRoss closing is set for the 31st (as of right now) so the plan is to move that first weekend in feb

I can count!
::sigh::
7 of 6 images of authentic game drawings sent to jin...

Hail!

@BrianBallsunStanton :-)

4:24 PM
@waxeagle yeah, my closing is the 20th, but we have to do some minor repairs before we can move in

@CRoss gotcha, we were originally shooting for the 20th...but our financing wasn't going to make it...
I don't think we have to fix anything before we move in...I have some minor fixes that can wait until after we get moved

@waxeagle banks can be a pain, but ours has been fairly smooth
Lord willing it will finish the same

@CRoss ours has been pretty good....USDA is just a bit backed up right now

@waxeagle ahhhh

@CRoss we were told it could take up to 45 days from a signed contract for it to all get ironed out...

4:29 PM
yuck :-(
is this a farm loan?

@CRoss Rur dev so basically

@waxeagle anytime the gov't gets involved ...

Q: How can I bring in new players on the fly?

C. RossHow can I smoothly bring in a new player and character with little or no notice? I run a semi-public game shop pathfinder game, and I sometimes have people show up to play I hadn't planned on. Often enough they have a character, but that character may not mesh with the existing party or setting...

@MadMAxJr is that a treehouse of horror?

4:52 PM
@waxeagle no
@waxeagle Homer gets a job with Max Scorpio(?) on an island
everyone but Homer fits in
@CRoss which question was that on?

/me needs to bone up on simpsons

@Pureferret irrelevant

@CRoss fair enough :)

@waxeagle I watch it sometimes
it's strange how it mixes juvenile humor with wonderful satire ...

@CRoss indeed.

5:02 PM
I need to continue watching old GI-Joe with a friend. We had a few drinks and started highlighting the corporate flaws and issues with Cobra as an organization.

@MadMAxJr :-)
I miss 80's and early 90's cartoons

Cobra has serious HR issues.

@MadMAxJr oddly enough, something they ironed out in the recent (abortive) comic reboot

Early on, Duke is thrown into a combat arena full of Cobra soldiers in the audience. Is this a mandatory company function? Does HR provide discount tickets? How are these hours billed?

Lol
I do love 80s/90s cartoons
but I must say I prefer the 2003-2007 TMNT to the 1983 version

5:13 PM
You didn't like Foot Soldiers as robots? :D

@MadMAxJr they did that with one of the newer GI Joes
I didn't find it satisfying

@MadMAxJr I don't even remember them...

Sigh.. A sign I'm gettin old.

It's all part of the 'reducing violence'/'priming the youth to take down future robot armies' schtick the government has going
@MadMAxJr you're not that much older than me
~7 years is nuthin'

5:29 PM
@Pureferret heck my wife is nearly taht much older than me...

Yeah, it's not that much

Q: Is Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition the new standard rules?

Jeffrywith1eI'm not clear about what role the Savage Worlds Deluxe edition serves now. Are future Savage Worlds products from Pinnacle going to be released using the Deluxe rules from now on? Or will they continue to be using the Explorer's Edition rules and the Deluxe rules are a standalone book of options ...

Okay, the Penny Arcade strip for today was amusing.

5:55 PM
Indeed
is it based on anything though?

Just the odd ways people play RPGs.
And if WOTC is going to listen to 'everyone'.....

Oh
right

@MadMAxJr Obviously they won't listen to everyone because at least someone will be saying "give me all your products for free"

Funny you mention that, I know there will be some 11 or 12 year old kid coming into our store trying to 'offer' to take our junk 4E books off our hands when 5E hits.

@MadMAxJr that is hilarious

6:07 PM
@MadMAxJr seriously?

Couple of interesting tweets from @WizardsDnd
I wish they would shunt encounters to a different account...having it mixed in is a bit of a pain...

What are they?

.@newbiedm (Trevor) Pleasing everyone is literally impossible when you get specific. But I think the goal is to make a game.. (1/2) #dndnext
(Trevor) ...of D&D that appeals to as many people as possible. And I believe this design team and this community are up to it #dndnext (2/2)

6:24 PM
Sorry I meant what are the encounters
I saw a few on the feed, but they didn't make sense
they sound like gamer feats

Hopefully WOTC has a good system for signal to noise filtering for player feedback.

@MadMAxJr, short of going through them one by one, what else can they do?

Otherwise we're going end up with squirrels and corgis as PC races and classes like battle chef and disco bandit.
Laser Barbarian, Fish Master, Combat Podiatrist, and more!

@Pureferret D&D encounters is their store program. every week on wednesday they have a new adventure that is only available to gaming stores.

@MadMAxJr I'd play that game!

6:28 PM
They also offer the D&D Lair program.

its designed to be played at a set time so they tweet during the play periods with bonuses

'bonuses' ?
I seee

@MadMAxJr I so want to play LA...but I don't have a gaming store <1 hr away...

Bilge Master, Rat Catcher, and Chair Thief are in the next splatbook.
(Fun note, one of those classes is real in another fantasy game system)

@MadMAxJr rat catcher?....
also those are hilarious

6:33 PM
Rat catcher?

Rat catcher is from Warhammer Fantasy RP, if I recall.

Laser Barbarian, Fish Master, and Disco Chef are my favourite
Sorry disco bandit
but chef would also work

Disco Bandit = Kingdom of Loathing reference.
Laser Barbarian because I still don't quite /get/ Thundarr the Barbarian

Why, does he need more lasers?

@MadMAxJr cursed skaven

6:35 PM
Fish Master because I am frequently reminded of one player in an old group who was furious that his character that had zero combat capability was going to have to deal with combat in a D&D 3.5 game. His entire character revolved around using a single skill.

@MadMAxJr was it useful like Diplomacy or Stealth ... wait, stealth would be two skills

No. It was a craft skill.

@MadMAxJr ... really

All his feats went into making himself better at it.

@MadMAxJr did you explain to him that this was a bad idea?

6:38 PM
He felt I was in the wrong.

@MadMAxJr you should have made him a PrC that somehow fitted craft into combat....

@MadMAxJr you know what happens when players think the DM is wrong?

@CRoss it usually involves lightning...and d12s...

@waxeagle ninjas

I'm just happy that particular game is almost ten years behind me.

6:42 PM
@CRoss heh :). Serenity open space w/o a spacesuit

Lightning?

Q: Tips for organising a short campaign?

PureferretI'm planning on fitting as much roleplay into my universitie's Intersemester break (ISB) as I can. Q: What are the differences between the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) and the Essentials Dungeon Master's Kit (DMK)?

NicholasI've played some 4th Edition, but I'm curious about trying an all-Essentials game. My understanding is that I need the appropriate Heroes books (in addition to PHB/DMG/MM). Are there any meaningful differences between the Guide and the Kit?

9:42 PM
Quieter this afternoon than its been in a few weekdays...

Unfortunate.

Mmmm

10:46 PM
Will have to try again tomorrow.

11:28 PM
@waxeagle yeah, but that happens eventually
spurt of activity ...
but I think we still got our five questions
@PatLudwig does my new player question stink?

FWIW I think it's a good Q

11:44 PM
@Pureferret thanks ... just ... it seems to be requiring a lot of clarification
some good answers though
I like yours :-)

It's just very specific
thanks
