Q: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem

MikaelWhen i go to http://localhost/repo/myproject/ and enter password this information is displayed: This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. <D:error xmlns:D="DAV:" xmlns:m="http://apache.org/dav/xmlns" xmlns:C="svn:"> &l...

Have you created an SVN repository at that location with svnadmin create, and verified that the Apache user can read from it (ie, verify that it's running as _www)?

Yes it should be correct. Apache should run over www and dir is www. when you type ls -la it's just shown as _www. I get the same error when I go to localhost/repo

What's your DocumentRoot set to? Also, verify that the permissions for the www user have been applied to the items within repo. Also - make sure there's no validity issues with the repo; svnlook info /usr/local/repo.

"$ svnlook info /usr/local/repo/myproject/

2011-08-11 22:22:25 +0200 (Thu, 11 Aug 2011)" Yes everything has permisson www. What's your DocumentRoot set? - Don't know how do I check?

Somewhere in the Apache config - if the httpd-svn.conf file defines a VirtualHost, it should be there, otherwise check in the main httpd.conf.

if I try svn list [192.168.1.2/repo/myproject](https://192.168.1.2/repo/myproject) i get the following: Username: admin
Password for 'admin':
svn: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem
<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
DocumentRoot /var/empty
Hi, took a while.. never used this before

hey!
does it work if you do, like, a checkout against the local filesystem, skipping the http server?

$ svnlook info /usr/local/repo/myproject

This work so I guess so?

yeah, seems like the repo is valid
check that the permissions for the "www" user go down into the repository, past just the top level

$ ls -la
total 16
drwxr-xr-x 8 _www wheel 272 Aug 11 22:22 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 _www wheel 102 Aug 11 22:22 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 _www wheel 229 Aug 11 22:22 README.txt
drwxr-xr-x 5 _www wheel 170 Aug 11 22:22 conf
drwxr-sr-x 15 _www wheel 510 Aug 11 22:22 db
-r--r--r-- 1 _www wheel 2 Aug 11 22:22 format
drwxr-xr-x 11 _www wheel 374 Aug 11 22:22 hooks
drwxr-xr-x 4 _www wheel 136 Aug 11 22:22 locks
in my httpd.conf the following is staded:
# If you wish httpd to run as a different user or group, you must run
# httpd as root initially and it will switch.
#
# User/Group: The name (or #number) of the user/group to run httpd as.
# It is usually good practice to create a dedicated user and group for
# running httpd, as with most system services.
#
User _www
Group _www

hmm.. is that /etc/users file's privileges allowing the _www user, too?

what do you mean?
didn't really understand

the AuthUserFile in your config is pointing to /etc/users - does the Apache user have the ability to read that, and was it created by htpasswd?

created it like this: sudo htpasswd -cm /etc/users admin
but
$ ls -la /etc/users
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 44 Aug 11 22:32 /etc/users

read access ought to be enough. hmm.
the config seems all good. maybe check for errors in the apache error log during the service's startup?

where is it located?

10:52 PM
good question.. not used to running it on os x. maybe /private/var/log/httpd/error_log - but if you can't find it, it'll be in httpd.conf

found it :)

nice

Hmm. mod_auth_apple?
seems like it's overriding the authentication setup you've done in the svn config
ohh, looks like mod_auth_apple makes it use the local database instead of the AuthUserFile you set up

ya, saw that also
tried to log in with my username and password for the computer

any luck there?

and that error disappeared but still got this

OHHH
hahaha

that stupid? :P

11:04 PM
drop the quotes around SVNPath “/usr/local/repo”
they're special formatted quotes
the \xe2\x80 junk around the path is blowing up its attempt to find the location :)
these quotes, apache can probably take: "" but these, not so much: “”
ok - I need to bail out and head home, but I'll check back in on this chat once I'm there. let me know if that fixes it :)

wtf
haha it's fixed
:)

haha nice!

however i can not go to /repo/myproject
just to /repo/

does /myproject exist yet? looked like the repository was at revision 0, so it shouldnt have any subdirectories

the folder exist atleast, wrote

11:11 PM
not sure what you mean?

Mikaels-Mac-mini:myproject Mikael$ pwd
/usr/local/repo/myproject
Mikaels-Mac-mini:myproject Mikael$ ls
README.txt conf db format hooks locks
so the folder is there and there is a lot of stuff in it :)
oho
now i see
<Location /repo>
DAV svn
SVNPath /usr/local/repo/pubba
<Location /repo>
DAV svn
SVNPath /usr/local/repo/myproject
<Location /repo/myproject>
DAV svn
SVNPath /usr/local/repo/myproject
and that will be the dir, right?

gotcha. Easier way, would be SVNParentPath /usr/local/repo - that automatically detects subdirectories as individual repos

ya that did it :)

good stuff!
well, I'll throw a quick answer on your question, i suppose :)
for future visitors and whatnot

do that and i will accepter it
:)
awsome mate, thanks a lot!
now i need to sleep so I can get up for work tomorrow
its 01:14 here

11:14 PM
haha, sounds good! have a good one!
that's.. a bit rough.

you too!
cheers
