Q: Unable to install Octave

NooberI am trying to install Octave by using these commands: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:octave/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install octave But I am getting the following error message: Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or...

edit your question and add the output of apt-cache policy libosmesa6
Start the command sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glide3 and add the output into your question.
@A.B. I have added the output in my question. Please have a look. Also, I would like to tell you I somehow installed libosmesa6 but when I restarted my system, it started giving a blank screen. I ended up doing a fresh install of ubuntu. I later on read this mesa installation creates problems
@A.B. This is similar to what happened with me earlier- askubuntu.com/questions/299543/…
yes my ubuntu is 14.04 .
Give me the output of apt-cache policy octave
@A.B. Added the output in my question

Perhaps, it is your decision.

yes I already started that
and?
it will take some time 70% done as of now
I think, your problem is/was, that you have mixed Vivid and Trusty packages
That's a very bad idea
Sep 6, 2015 14:27
I did not install anything everything came with the ubuntu insallation itself
eg libegl1-mesa-lts-vivid, libgbm1-lts-vivid, libgl1-mesa-dri-lts-vivid
I was using 15.04 earlier but it used to hang to I switched to 14.04 few days back
o_O that's your problem ^^
Is there some way I dont repeat the same mistake next time while installing Ubuntu?
a downgrade is a bad idea
Sep 6, 2015 14:29
No I did a fresh install
not a downgrade
yes, no downgrade to an earlier version
But the packages are not in the officially Ubuntu repos
I formatted and did a fresh install
Maybe I messed up somewhere
Ok its done
