Congratulations, though I'm afraid I don't want even more excuses to procrastinate by being on here!
Aug 5, 2018 3:46 PM
I miss Jan - he always had the answer
Aug 5, 2018 3:43 PM
I think I joined when I was an undergrad but didn't bother posting, just .... stalking
Aug 5, 2018 3:41 PM
I don't think I've ever been around when one has happened, Loong was definitely already a mod long before I ever made an account
Aug 5, 2018 3:35 PM
I think this came up a little while ago and there were no plans for more mod elections! @orthocresol is on a roll right now ;D
Aug 5, 2018 3:33 PM
Hullo!

Anyone have experience with getting vector drawings into ChemDraw as templates (similar to github.com/itc/chemdraw-templates). The drawings in the template are still editable (can be recoloured), but when I try and export from Adobe Illustrator as eps/svg files they lose all editable information when stuck into ChemDraw

Hi all
Mar 30, 2018 5:41 PM
@Abcd I really don't have an opinion on this, and certainly don't think theres any need to start digging up old posts to edit. I tend to stick with SN2 now as it's more straightforward and avoids slow mathjax

@orthocresol Pyrrolidine. Pyrollidine is the worst
Jan 22, 2018 9:43 PM
@Zhe I'm for this. If theres actual chalk. No whiteboards.

Hey @Mith!

Does anyone have experience installing g09/GaussView on a Mac? Thinking of moving from Schrodinger ( :( ) but really struggling to get it to actually run "Gaussian is not installed". Think I've followed the instructions to create the .login file but it doesn't seem to be doing much

Anyone around here with any 'glassblowing' experience? Im looking for a tungsten carbide glass knife. Was given one years ago by a glass blower but it's pretty much blunt now and a bit rusty. Not one of those things to cut tlc plates with, a heavy metal thing
Oct 21, 2017 3:34 PM
@orthocresol Nice endorsement ;)
Sep 24, 2017 10:01 PM
Mendeley. Used to be a huge endnote fan but had some flaws, then when I went with LaTeX it seemed sensible,e to just completely switch :)
Sep 16, 2017 2:19 PM
M.A.R is possibly the best person to ask for clarification on what he said previously, though I don't think I've seen him here for a little while
Sep 13, 2017 9:28 PM
@orthocresol Late to this party, but have tried that in desperation before. Attempting to crush a glass rod into splinters was .... interesting.
Sep 9, 2017 10:05 AM
@Jan You're talking about the same kind of people who can't google "how to balance a chemical equation". Effortz

Bonus points for making me look up a Name reaction ;)
Sep 8, 2017 2:47 PM
@Jan Yay!
Sep 3, 2017 2:48 PM
Fair. I can copy out the relevant section/explanation if you're not going to do it. But I doubt the OP is around anymore / cares now
Sep 3, 2017 2:44 PM
@Loong- the 2013 version isn't easy to access even now, I doubt it was widely circulated in 2014 when that answer was written.
Aug 30, 2017 9:03 AM
Haha. Well, I'm glad it worked! At 1003 in the morning I think i'd opt for the coffee ;)

I usually go with 10%. I think toluene is fine, though never tried - benzene smells too good to be replaced

@Jan 2-MeTHF is often magic. Also had luck with THF with a little benzene. Note also that things are always nicer if you filer the grignard (schlenk filter) immediately after preparation, even if you plan on using it fairly rapidly.

Steve Liddle's book on M-M bonds has all the references you'd ever want, however. I did start trying to type something out, but it got above my head too fast
Aug 29, 2017 10:25 PM
Any question that I can only answer with "someone did a DFT study" makes me uncomfortable :'(
Aug 29, 2017 10:24 PM
@orthocresol- so much dislike for this question. Every year, without fail, someone asks me this.

Q: Is there an iron–iron bond in diiron nonacarbonyl?

orthocresolDiiron nonacarbonyl, $\ce{[Fe2(CO)9]}$, is often depicted with an Fe–Fe bond as shown below: The Fe—Fe bond is usually invoked in order to (1) explain the observed diamagnetism and (2) satisfy the 18-electron rule. However, I'm also aware that the presence of such a bond has been challenged nu...

Ideally your question would be more general than specifically about how to use a given bit of software, but you might get lucky and someone knows the answer! :)

O
Aug 19, 2017 1:50 PM
@orthocresol Wait until you join Ed ;)

Back to the actual discussion about tagging: has anyone ever actually proposed to do anything to .... fix the whole thing
Aug 8, 2017 6:27 PM
Aug 8, 2017 6:26 PM
:'( The tag 'chemistry' is not allowed
Aug 8, 2017 6:25 PM
:O I'm going rogue. I'm going to start just tagging my questions with .

Aug 8, 2017 6:24 PM
I think fundamentally the tagging system is going to break at some stage, I don't really think it was ever meant for this many things.
Aug 8, 2017 6:20 PM
@orthocresol It's a shame they can't be nested in some way. I do like the organic-chem tag though, it means I can just view questions relating to that without having to individually look through/favourite every organic related tag
Aug 1, 2017 6:02 PM
pointless edit* on a very old question
Aug 1, 2017 6:01 PM
Maybe let's not... it was a very poor
Aug 1, 2017 11:06 AM
@ABcDexter Its quite a broad topic, anything specifically?

@Zhe I really like that question, it's just worded in a difficult way to be kept open
