If gnat becomes a mod we will have to elect a new mod because we really won't be getting any more moderation. Plus a second mod to make up for gnat's newly reduced workload.
(aside from the "nobody will flag anymore" aspect) :P
@Rachel I disagree. As a mod on both a beta and non-beta site, I end up helping guide the site/community a lot. While you aren't the "voice of the site", you should be active on meta and help formulate policies.
And your voice carries more weight in the eyes of the community. Generally.
@Manishearth my personal circumstances this year are too stressed to commit for regular site maintenance. Per my observations, at Programmers it's rather important fopr someone of mods to be available for help 24x7: since I can't help mod team with this, it's better to leave it to someone who can
aside from a natural desire to increase helpful flag count to 1000 (at current 800+, it feels certainly doable:)
Though if you are comfortable on your side of the fence, that's quite good too :)
The last Physics.SE mod election, both of the winners (me and Qmechanic) were the folks who would be active in close voting/etc
Which meant that there were very few non-mod active CVers left
And on Physics we try not to binding-close (we're moving towards a hands-off approach for closing wrt mods), we wait for a few votes. Caused a problem :P

@Manishearth I tend to be careful with close votes myself despite the number that I cast. Most of mine are done via review rather than "off the cuff"

I do think a better job needs to be done with explaining the hows and whys of closing questions, particularly to new users and it's something that I want do what I can to spearhead.
@WorldEngineer Don't know much, but SE is working on that. Stay tuned for some awesome stuff

@Manishearth I'm firmly in favor of Roosevelt's maxim: "The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something."
