@Ullallulloo Those thumbsticks do not look comfortable at all.
also did you know that viagra works on plants?
Rigid Roses! Turgid Tulips!
> If your stems stay up for more than a few weeks, you might want to contact your botanist.
@agent86 lmao
Priapism has always sounded hilarious to me.
@agent86 ooo trippy
8:07 PM
@FAE eh, their whole point is to grip, those look grippy. Looks fine to me.
@FAE like the word, or the condition?
@agent86 The condition.
@Ullallulloo I dunno, seems like you'd really start feeling the edges after a long/intense play session.
@FAE It's not as funny when you realize it can cause permanent damage, people always seem to ignore that
@FAE for a second I thought you were still talking about priapism
@BenBrocka Yeah I know, but I find a lot of things that cause permanent damage funny. :P Schadenfreude!
@agent86 Yeah, I realized the timing of that belatedly.
8:09 PM
@FAE Yeah, I dunno about those. I definitely felt those weird ridges in the Gamecube controller
I've never had a grip problem with the Dualshock controller, but I've been using them for...over ten years? Almost 15?
@BenBrocka The rounded caps that they have now work fine and are nicely grippy, I don't see how this is more advantageous or comfortable.
The d-pad does sound better though
The Vita's dpad is pretty good, and the standar dual shock has always been poor for any game that depends on it
@BenBrocka Yeah, the gap elimination will be nice. Either way, Sony's d-pad has always been better than the 360's piece of crap.
well, it's proto hardware at best and rumor mill fodder at worst, so I doubt it's the way the final hardware's going to look
second, it seems kind of like the stock xbox 360 controller's cap design
@agent86 There aren't pronounced ridges on those though, just a dip.
8:12 PM
they've got little nubs along the edge, and it isn't convex in the center
I kind of prefer it concave, tbh. the ps3 controller is a bit harder to keep my thumb on than the xbox's
@agent86 The whole middle section bothers me. The dpad sounds great, the analogs less so, but I don't think they'd be a problem
The light and speaker look ridiculous and have dubious use, but they're probably just testing features or something. I doubt that, as is, will go live
Heh. Co-workers saran wrapped the boss's truck.
@RavenDreamer I want $20 level for this, but I just had an unexpectedly high utilities bill this month. :(
@fbueckert Haha what
8:14 PM
@FAE :(
@RavenDreamer #8?!? y no #1??
that's it, you're fired. I have no shark.
@FAE It's his last day.
@agent86 So I'll feel less bad when I invariably get knocked off the leaderboard.
@RavenDreamer If you stay in that position, I'll be totally jealous of your t-shirt.
@fbueckert And now he can't leave!
@FAE Hehehe.
8:15 PM
@FAE Until he cleans up his truck, anyways. In -20 weather.
@fbueckert Oof, that'll be... fun.
@FAE Eh. -20 is mild.
No wind, it's not even toque weather.
Ah, if it's no wind, that's nice.
@RavenDreamer bought already
Still, can't really drive around with saran wrap on your truck.
8:18 PM
A man walks into a psychologists' office wearing nothing but Saran wrap.
The doctor takes one look and announces, "I can clearly see youre nuts"
@FAE Eh. You can, but I wouldn't recommend it.
@fbueckert Wouldn't you risk some of the plastic melting to your car?
I can't imagine that'd be good for the paint job.
@FAE If it was on the hood, yeah. You might get some wrapped around the axles, too.
It would suck for the paint job, but it wouldn't impact vehicle performance at all.
Someone ... How are a user's top tags determined?
On the users page? Rep / that time period.
I think.
8:24 PM
@RavenDreamer Oh. That makes more sense. I was curious as to why Kingdoms of Amalur was one of my top tags when I had so many other upvotes in different tags.
Really? Thought it was upvotes
totally looks sorted by score
hover over the number to the left of the tag
@BenBrocka Yeah, but if you're on the users page, it uses /week / quarter / all to pick the tags.
Oh on the user's page? yeah that seems to be limited to that time period. Not sure about the rep thing though
That seems like an overly expensive query
The actual reputation math is pretty nasty
@BenBrocka OH! By the by. I have my mic this weekend.
We could totally borderlands 2 it up, and I won't be your mute sidekick.
@RavenDreamer Did they forget that only half the series is on Steam?
8:29 PM
@RavenDreamer Sure, I should be able to
Anyway, turns out that upgraded Ubuntu server 10.04 to 12.04 is a pain in the buttocks.
@Powerlord How so
@Powerlord Runner 2 is the only game being given out. The rest is soundtracks.
(But, at any rate, I fully expect the rest of the games to make it to steam, eventually.)
@tiddy You mean how so upgrading? Well, for one, do-release-upgrade would only do the first part and I had to apt-get dist-upgrade force to continue. And I had all sorts of conflicts I had to manually sort out. Then I had to purge the MySQL packages and reinstall them because it randomly decided it wasn't going to work.
@RavenDreamer I thought they tweeted once that the full collection wouldn't be available for PC?
8:32 PM
Ah sounds like you had some bad luck
I can't install python3 or python3.2 because they just bomb with an error.
@FAE They also tweeted that they wouldn't release the soundtracks ;P
Plans change, etc.
Setting up python3.2-minimal (3.2.3-0ubuntu1) ...

@RavenDreamer Soundtracks should always be released!
@RavenDreamer True. I don't know what to do. I've bought all the GMBs thus far, and I'd like to give them more money. On the other hand, I already do own the soundtracks because they came with the Wii bit.trip complete version. On the other other hand, you can get Runner 2. On the other other other hand, Runner is one of my least liked games out of the bit.trip games.
And on the other other other other hand, I don't have a lot of disposable income this month due to unexpected bills.
8:34 PM
@FAE I would wait, then. It'll be on a steam sale eventually if you still want it! :D
@RavenDreamer I know, but I like the GMBs. Argh.
@FAE It's okay. I was able to support the GMB more than I usually do, so you can like them vicariously through me!
@RavenDreamer But I don't get a handy digital version of the OSTs this way!
@FAE I'm sure you can wink and nudge and pine and pout and figure something out.
@RavenDreamer >_> @ rhyme
8:38 PM
@FAE Unintentional.
I wouldn't rhyme like that, the meter is all wrong.
@RavenDreamer When I say boom, boom, boom, you say bam, bam, bam, no pause in between, come on lets jam!
@Powerlord Everybody say heyo.
And now I have the cupid shuffle in my head...
Anyway, now that I upgraded VGMusic's server to Ubuntu 12.04, it'd better have a new enough git client that this script works.
Then again, I can just do this stuff on my 12.04 game server if I had to
It IS my SourceMod test box after all.
I'm currently splitting my NativeVotes SourceMod plugin out of my BuiltinVotes SourceMod extension repo... and converting it from svn to git at the same time.
8:50 PM
btw, if you want to see something funny, watch the Gaming CX video of PaRappa the Rappa.
Fun fact: The game is in English even in Japan.
That's not uncommon for low-text games
At least it wasn't. Plenty of old cartridge era games where most/all the menus were in English, only story-based text was in japanese
@BenBrocka PaRappa the Rappa isn't exactly a low-text game.
Never played it
Incidentally, this is the video I was talking about earlier. :D
9:13 PM
@BenBrocka -1 not enough 'y'
Wee, now to jam some fast changes into a client's project, to convince them we've been busting our asses all week working on their stuff.
Sooo many hats
@SaintWacko TF2?
@badp There's not much 'y' when Steve says it either
@Powerlord Towns
Oh yeah, should I make my penguin look normal, with a patch across one eye, or wearing a gas mask?
9:25 PM
@Powerlord Patch
I still think it's funny that the penguin gets attached to your bu... er... belt.
Also, thanks do-release-upgrade for disabling all repos except the main one. Including the security update repo

@BenBrocka Ooh, I should make that my message tone :D
9:45 PM
@Powerlord I guess it wasn't translated for the completely opposite reason, actually
@badp Which makes more sense. Also, the beat matches up to the lyrics.
besides I don't quite think the Japanese generally suck at English, do they?
(although I've seen some atrocious pages)

@BenBrocka Latin letters? like medieval gothic font faces?
Latin script, or Roman script, is a writing system based on the letters of the classical Latin alphabet and extended forms thereof. It is used as the standard method of writing most Western and Central European languages, as well as many languages from other parts of the world. Latin script is the basis for the largest number of alphabets of any writing system, and is also the basis of the International Phonetic Alphabet. For these reasons, Latin is the most widely adopted writing system in the world. The 26 most widespread letters are the letters contained in the ISO basic Latin alphabe...

@AshleyNunn I DO prefer strawberry jam.
Going home time!
@Powerlord Don't forget to update your nativevotes repo to the GitHub version when you get home
Aww. Zynga and EA settled their lawsuit.
So much for watching the fur fly.
@fbueckert What was it about?
@StrixVaria EA sued Zynga over their blatant ripoff of, "The Ville".
And made it sound like they were standing up for the little guy.
10:36 PM
@fbueckert Oh right.
Zynga countersued, words were exchanged, blah blah.
Well, Zynga deserved to get sued. EA isn't "the little guy" in any sense, though.
And they settled. Somebody gave somebody else a truckload of money to make it go away.
@fbueckert Strawberry is my favourite.
I love it when it's 4:50 on Friday and your boss comes over and says "we have a production issue and need to make a fix tonight; can you own it?"
10:47 PM
@StrixVaria uuuugh
@StrixVaria I hate that.
So sorry.
@Coronus Oh yeah actually I meant to use that word.
Well it's out of my hands now. I did my part.
Now it's time to stop thinking about work.
And if you could come in on Sunday, too... that'd be great.
10:50 PM
@StrixVaria Yes, have a beer rum and coke
@MBraedley I don't like beer or rum.
I think we've been over this.
@StrixVaria Have a scotch?
I don't really drink.
@StrixVaria Screw that, I'm not editing a second time.
@StrixVaria Gotcha. Tequila it is! ;)
10:51 PM
@StrixVaria Wouldn't know it by that edit history. :P

MBraedleyWow, I feel like an idiot. The in app volume was turned down to about 25 percent, which was quiet enough that I couldn't hear anything through my home theatre speakers. I've programmed my remote with buttons for that function, but it didn't occur to me to check that the volume might be down. I...

I feel so stupid
@MBraedley ...lol
@StrixVaria Same here, except I don't drink at all.
@MBraedley It happens.
but not one person suggested even trying to turn up the volume.
10:53 PM
@Wipqozn I hadn't ever drunk until my senior year of college. I still have probably only ever on maybe 5 separate occasions.
@MBraedley I'm tempted to up vote that question just so more people see it.
blech, tried TF2 again for a while. Played engie on gorge. Ragequit
@StrixVaria Obviously you need to hang out more with @LessPop
@Wipqozn It's a good question. Stupid solution, but good question
@FAE Are you callin' me an alcoholic?
10:55 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz You certainly are a fine gentlemen quite expert in the matter of alcohol derivates
@LessPop_MoreFizz What @badp said.
Weirdest line in a song I have heard today - "You hold yourself together like a pair of bookends"
@AshleyNunn Cuts right to your heartstrings, dunnit?
And Rick's hallucinating again. Oh yeah, this season of Walking Dead is gonna end well.
@GraceNote So much so.
11:01 PM
@StrixVaria Hah! I have only consumed alcohol on 3 occasions! I got you BEAT! WOOZAHOO!
@AshleyNunn I'm not sure what to think of this metaphor. They don't always hold themselves together so well.
One was in a chocolate, one was a result of improper cooking, and one was trying out Hennessy.
@GraceNote I am not sure why you people are proud of this.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Probably the same reason why people who drink are proud of it.
@FAE Well there is that! And there can be MILES of books in between!
And if they arent holding books they are prone to falling over!
11:03 PM
Personally I quite enjoy occasional consumption of fine alcoholic beverages, and find the matter not to be particularly worthy of bragging either way
I like alcohol, especially beer. I drink it when I feel that way inclined.
Which is often enough.
Dropping the uselessly sophisticated talk, it's more of an acquired taste anyway
Alcohol makes no sense to me but I don't actually dislike it or anything. I just... don't drink. That's really the heart of it.
@GraceNote Well no, because I could understand at least acknowledge the pride of a total teetotaler. But the 'I have had 3 drinks ever' feels silly.
@AshleyNunn Indeed.
11:04 PM
@GraceNote There's not much sense to it, it's just good taste.
@badp beer in particular is a very acquired taste. Hops is one of those things that most beer drinkers start off not liking and slowly want more and more and more of as they discover a wider variety of beer.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh, it's only because my number is lower than his in a matter of a point where the point was to get small numbers. Alcohol is largely irrelevant to the pride point here, it's the better numbers.
@GraceNote But this isn't golf. Smaller != better!
@LessPop_MoreFizz When the competition is to get smaller, though, it is.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Sooooo true
11:05 PM
The awkward moment when you realize you never heard that Hops beer you never heard of is Italian
I'm having it.
It doesn't matter how insignificant, wrong, or opposite something is in the big picture or on the grand scale or on the cosmic level. If, within a scope, I win because of circumstances, I win.
@badp all beer has hops. Hops is one of the things that makes beer beer and not just grain alcohol.
Although I'm very likely looking at the wrong thing
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh okay
Beer without hops is like lasagne without pasta. It's not lasagne anymore, it's something else.
A slobbering mess of sauces, meats, and cheeses?
11:07 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Chile?
Oh, yeah, obviously, that hops.
....that moment when you hear a chat ping and cant tell which program it is from.
@MBraedley Basically.
Hops are the female flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of a hop species, Humulus lupulus. They are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, to which they impart a bitter, tangy flavor, though hops are also used for various purposes in other beverages and herbal medicine. In the Middle Ages beers tended to be of a very low alcohol content and were commonly consumed as a safer alternative to untreated water. Each village tended to have one or more small breweries with a barley field and a hop garden in close vicinity. Early documents include mention of a ...
I didn't know the English word for it
@badp Well that's no a pretty good excuse
11:08 PM
Q: my (just installed) ubuntu cant open .deb files, and i cant download for example "Steam(64xbit) from the ubuntu software center, help me please...

james dirkseni've downloaded ubuntu because of my windows7 kept showing a black screen with a cursor on it, and wouldnt boot up propperly, so i thought that matbe linux would work. it worked perfect but i cant open .deb files, whitch should be made for linux? and if i try to download Steam 64xbit it tells me ...

@GamingTopicsFromOutside I had fun installing Steam on my fresh Ubuntu.
@GamingTopicsFromOutside Aren't .deb files tied to a particular version of Debian/Ubuntu/other derivatives?
@Coronus did anything go wrong?
@badp Yeah, if you ever hear me talk about beer being hoppy, I am referring to it having a lot of hop flavor - which is to say, a lot of citrus, or floral flavors, or just straight up bitterness depending on the hop variety.
@MBraedley Nah, .deb should work with any debian based distro
11:11 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz sometimes all three, as is the case for a short run batch from one of the local micro breweries.
Just as .rpm works with any redhat based distro
Yeah. Although I had an Affligem last Saturday and the beer was so... hoppy I didn't very much enjoy it
I was thinking of buying System Shock 2 but I'm not about to spend $10 on a game based on a vague idea of what it is.
@MBraedley Indeed.
I guess I have quite a few ways to go in the road to Hops addiction! :P
11:11 PM
@StrixVaria Did you ever play the original Deus Ex?
@StrixVaria If so, are you fond of it?
@SaintWacko okay, I thought you could set something in a .deb that specified a distro and version
@StrixVaria Unless I'm thinking of the wrong game, everyone I've ever spoken to says one should play it.
(Excluding values of people for whom the statement is false)
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes.
@StrixVaria Basically, System Shock 2 is an FPS with heavy RPG character building elements and a surival horror grade emphasis on scarcity and effectively being scary.
@GraceNote I've got you beat. The only alcohol I've had is 1/4 of a mikes hard lemonade, and a small glass of becardi breeze.
11:12 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz I didn't get past the tutorial because there was a required stealth section and fuck that.
@Wipqozn Ooh, fancy fancy.
@StrixVaria System Shock 2 and classic Deus Ex are basically a matched pair of games except SS2 has no stealth.
Yeah, ammo is very much more scarce in SS2 than it ever is in Deus Ex
@Wipqozn For a turtle, that's a lot.
@Wipqozn There are so many fine pubs in this city. You disgrace me
11:13 PM
All the becardi breeze did was give me the desire for a non-alcoholic fruit drink.
That does sound like I would enjoy it, though.
@StrixVaria There's no real stealth in SS2 unless you go out of your way to do a gimmick build that runs away from everything and spams invisibility.
Unfortunately the scariest moment for me in System Shock 2 was one of the encounters with the robot killer guys. He sounded like he was RIGHT HERE making all sorts of idling sounds, and I was short on ammo. Spoiler alert: the sound engine doesn't account for distance on height terms
@badp Wrong architecture message, and for some reason my admin password stopped working and I had to log off the account and back on.
@Coronus I have seen people having problem with the steam64 package indeed
For some reason apt won't install steam64 AND steam, but steam64 depends on steam
so that's not good.
11:15 PM
@badp I got it installing before I had to sleep so we'll see when I get home today.
I just want my Tux...
The sad thing is
If Steam tells you that it failed to launch the game because of whatever missing driver extension
...that's enough for the Tux
@badp Seems like they're aptly demonstrating a big part of what's wrong with gaming on linux...
@BenBrocka Inexperience on the part of people building software for it?
11:16 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz This is difficult to listen to but I'll give it a try.
While I wasn't particularly scared by SS2 though - it was fun thorough and would recommend
@badp I've found installing many things of various degrees of completeness to be completely randomly broken in Linux
well, I was kind of scared - but mainly because of the difficulty
@BenBrocka ...and I haven't. apt is the whole thing that finally got me to install Ubuntu and I've loved it ever since
@StrixVaria Basically, what you'll see is it's an FPS. It has a fairly detailed character build/skill system and some inventory management and puzzles for some RPG flavor.
11:18 PM
Sometimes things do get hairy, and that's when you want to use a good package manager like aptitude
This kid has all the door security codes memorized.
@StrixVaria like in the original deus ex, you can hunt for them
@MBraedley The Last Barfighter
@LessPop_MoreFizz I've heard really good things about System Shock 2
11:20 PM
The SHODAN reveal is basically the single best 'scene' in any video game ever.
^ It's not much of a spoiler, insofar as it's one of the most talked about scenes ever, so it's roughly SS2's equivalent to my yelling DUMBLEDORE DIES, LUKE IS VADER'S SON, ARYA GOES BLIND, but it is a spoiler.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Hey, that third one is a spoiler!
@LessPop_MoreFizz ..........I am just glad I got to that part of the books.
Luckily, I have no idea who Arya is
@AshleyNunn Aeris dies.
So with my expense claim check, should I get this monitor or something even better?
11:28 PM
Unless you're talking about Arya from Eragon, but... unless my memory of the books are completely messed up, she doesn't go blind? <_<
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'd say Ned dies would fit better in that context.
@Wipqozn Arya Goes Blind has special meaning to me as spoilers go.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh? Whyso?
@AshleyNunn It is something of a catchphrase in a dark corner of the internet full of the deepest, most intense hate-fandom of GRRM imaginable.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Ah, true. If you were reading the books as they came out it would be hell needing to wait 5 years for a resolution to that.
11:30 PM
@Wipqozn Also because of that.
That's probably one of the biggest scumbag GRRM moments in the entire series, due to the 5-year wait.
And also because Ayra was awesome.
Ned was nifty, but he was also fucking stupid and you could see it coming a mile away.
I do not enjoy reading ASoIaF. I plan on watching the HBO series and never reading the books.
@AshleyNunn Damnitall, I haven't
You're a terribile person, @LessPop_MoreFizz
@SaintWacko Well, now he's just going to spoil even more. You should probably ignore him before he does.
@Wipqozn Nah, I'll stop.
11:32 PM
@SaintWacko He did spoil it for me before I read it, ages ago.
@Wipqozn So true
ASoIaF Spoilers: Everyone dies.
Spicy Kimchi ramen is delicious
@StrixVaria Only the characters people like.
@AshleyNunn I made sure to keep quiet about my reading ASOIAF until I finished it in order to avoid being spoiled. You people just aren't clever enough.
Let's just say that I was part of the community of people responsible for several of these results (not spoilers)
11:34 PM
@Wipqozn I was too excited about it
Once upon a time, GRRM's website was the top google result for "Absolute Fucker", now it's some filthy furry tumblr. That... somehow seems appropriate.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm just happy he's decided to push back Dunk and Egg until after he's finished TWOW.
@GraceNote A Song of Ice and Fire.
It's the book series the HBO series Game Of Thrones is based on.
...I hate abbreviations.
I know what A Song of Ice and Fire is.
11:36 PM
@GraceNote It's the series where Arya goes blind.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I gathered as much.
Jeeeze spoilers why don't you
@MarcoCeppi I do. So there is no why don't I.
I just came by to tell you guys Canonical sponsored a TF2 server for the weekend to celebrate Steam for Linux going public
Oh joy, the water line in one my parent's rentals broke
11:39 PM
Did you ever finish the series @Fluttershy, or did you just cry into your pillow after LessPop spoiled it?
@Wipqozn I'm caught up.
Okay, it must have been Mana who cried into his pillow and stopped reading then.
@Wipqozn Yes
@MarcoCeppi Shiny
ah, there we go. I've been meaning to find the spoilers @LessPop_MoreFizz posted to Mana.

That's where it starts.
I was having trouble finding it.
Guys, as long as you don't live in Russia, you don't have to worry about being hit by a large meteor. The reason is that in the last 150 years, the only 2 incidents of large meteors that were recorded entered the atmosphere over Russia. Therefore, all future large meteors must hit Russia. Fake stats are fun.
My favourite part is where you said you listed off those spoilers to some random person at the airport.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Reading those spoilers now that I know where all those bits happen is kind of awesome.
11:45 PM
@AshleyNunn It's fun watching others suffer.
@Wipqozn Well, now that I am not one of the suffering ones...
Mar 22 '12 at 1:40, by LessPop_MoreFizz
@Mana Because George R. R. Martin will never finish the series, and because the wait for A Dance With Dragons while he attended conventions, demanded his fans go on quests to find him exotic food, and blogged about football instead of writing have left me a hollow, broken shell of a fan.
@AshleyNunn Exactly! There's a sort of sadistic glee that comes from it.
It's going to be cool when HBO catches up and writes an ending for him.
At any rate, I would like to remind people that not all spoilers ruin the reading experience; some enhance it
I'm going to continue to cling to the naive hope he meets his 2014 deadline for TWOW.

So... I go AFK after pasting that in... and Gnomeslice is suspended and tweeting profanity at me.
If I for one didn't spoil myself with one of the most gruesome parts of Homestuck before even starting the reading, I would've never started reading in the first place
@Wipqozn Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
It was like... page 1 is one thing... page 2000 is another thing... how they fuck are they part of the same thing.
@badp I keep trying to get into Homestuck but I can't.
11:54 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Like I said, naive.
@AshleyNunn Hmmm... what's the farthest you'd got?
@badp Not very.
The start is very slow, but then Hussie stopped accepting reader input and things picked up rhythm.
Tyrion's dad is way cooler in the tv series
@AshleyNunn Did John get the CD?
11:58 PM
@Wipqozn I just tabbed back to Towns
Oh, geez
