Q: Learning to program. Where to start? Non language specifc where do I need to begin?

@WorldEngineer playing with the SE data api is a good idea, I think it's MSSQL so it has all the sql capabilities one needs to know. Though honestly I would still suggest MSSQL Express install locally because you can learn about things like executions plans and profiling which you aren't going to get fooling with SE's data api

Granted those things are a pretty far reach from where you are, but you get the install and the project started and maybe 6 months or a year from now you'll be in a place where you can learn to read an execution plan

and you'll already have the tech setup to learn it
