Q: Capacity of ctangle exceeded

bubbaI'm interested in looking at (and maybe modifying) the code in MetaFont/MetaPost. To generate their C code, I applied ctangle to mp.w, and got an error message saying "token capacity exceeded". Running ctangle on smaller files works OK, so I think the problem is just that mp.w is too big. Are t...

Q: Problem with LuaTeX : can't write on the .aux file at second pass

MikeTeXI use MiKTeX 2.9 for Windows, format Plain eTeX. I have my own macro package which I've used for years, and I tried recently to use it with LuaTeX (included MiKTeX version) in order to use UTF-8 encoding (say). All things worked fine at the first pass and LuaTeX correctly created the .aux file an...

Q: Elsarticle double-blind mode?

Let me save everyone some time: No matter WHAT database question you ask me, I'm just going to tell you that you should be using Postgres.
Replace database by editor, Postgres by emacs and we have David. :)

@PauloCereda Looks like a shaved chuck norris from a distance.

@percusse LOL

@PauloCereda Who would we have simply deleting "database" and replacing "Postgres" with "\tikzmark"?

12:29 AM
@GonzaloMedina ooh! :P
Peter? :P

@PauloCereda futilitycloset.com/2012/11/30/appreciation :) Weird but nice

@PauloCereda I just failed to answer an emacs question. (All this new fangled soft wrap idea fooled me Word has clearly corrupted people)

@DavidCarlisle :)

@PauloCereda What about deleting "database" once again, but replacing "should be using Postgres" with "shouldn't be using fncychap"?

@GonzaloMedina ooh! fncychap is a blessed package. :P

12:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle The keys I hit more frequently are Command-I that do the same as Meta-Q (it was Command-I in Alpha, the editor I used before Aquamacs was functional).
@PauloCereda Heretic!

@egreg Just kidding. <3

@PauloCereda What does the command beautify do? (I saw it listed as one of the bot commands)

@GonzaloMedina No idea. :) I'm still reading the code. :)

12:55 AM
I am confused about the use of the \floatbarrier command.
Sorry, I think I got it.

@StephanLehmke I'm not sure it's really TL. I replicated it, so it's not peculiar to the OP. It's true there doesn't seem to be a solution at the moment.
And by no solution I mean without installing a development version of LuaTeX.

1:11 AM
@AlanMunn Well if it's a transient bug in LuaTeX there isn't really an answer apart from "wait for the next version of LuaTeX", is there? Sounds pretty localized to me, but it might also be a misunderstanding of this concept on my part.

@StephanLehmke Fair enough. Is there an easy way to install the development version? Could that be put as an answer?
I tend not to mess with the core binaries myself but leave it up to the TL folk.

@AlanMunn Well so far I also only have @MartinSchröder s word on it :-) So if anyone can answer, he (or maybe @topskip?) can.

@JosephWright Yay! :)
My router didn't want to connect. I was scared for a minute. :)
Thankfully I have two spare routers. :P
Hey there!

A Q&A site proposal which you are following, Typography, is now moving into the commitment phase.
@JosephWright: I was thinking to make the bot log the sessions and generate a report later on. Thoughts? :)
@StephanLehmke: Bayern 1:1 Dortmund. :)

Is putting a table in a figure caption possible, or is this something LaTeX does not support?
I could not find any examples of this.

10:01 AM
@PauloCereda Oh well. So the distance between them stays the same :-(

@StephanLehmke I watched the game highlights. It seems Dortmund supported the pressure until the very last minute.

Q: How to get both usual text as well as all mathematical symbols in slanted?

FrankI have text in slanted, but I would like to get the math symbols in between also in slanted. (To be precise, with the 'slanted' I'm talking about here I mean \textsl{...}.) So how can I accomplish this? In fact I would want a command that makes ordinary takes as well as math symbols slanted. ...

@PauloCereda If it's an original you could get rich ;-)
I have a copy of Gödels original paper on completeness of FOL somewhere :-)
Which is, to get slightly on topic, of outstanding typographic quality at the verge of the last century ;-)

@StephanLehmke I wish. :)
@StephanLehmke Really?! Oh my, any scanned version for us to take a look? :)
@percusse OMG

@PauloCereda I'm afraid that one is in a box in the garage :-(

@StephanLehmke Uh-oh.

@PauloCereda Well our university library has the original journal ;-)

@StephanLehmke I need to pay you guys a visit. :)

I see that @BrunoLeFloch has dropped in to the main site: been a while!

12:32 PM
@JosephWright Wow! :)
I think I'm being victim of a serial voting attack.

@PauloCereda As we speak of it, I remebrered I have some gems from the legacy of my doctoral adviser in my basement, among which was a rather oldish reproduction of the original paper on the first incompleteness theorem...

@StephanLehmke Argh! The statements of theorems are letter spaced!

@egreg Perhaps German typhography?

@PauloCereda Yes. When using Fraktur (or variations thereof), emphasis was attained by letterspacing. Somebody continued to do it also with Roman typefaces. And the result is, to say the least, disputable.

@egreg Yes, that's a famous german tradition ;-)

@Stephan: email sent. :) Sorry for the delay. :)

@PauloCereda received :-)

@percusse: "Type-o-graphy" LOL

2:27 PM
@PauloCereda you're not committing?

2:51 PM
@tohecz How do I commit?

A: Follow and help the Typography.SE proposal!

toheczTypography.SX got into the Commitment phase! You can commit to it on it's Area51 page!

@PauloCereda but remember, you're signing a contract with devil (you should be active there if commit) ;D

@tohecz ooh! :)

3:26 PM
@tohecz: Can we have ducks on Typography? :)

4:06 PM
@PauloCereda These are fantastic!!! So many pranks I can pull off now.
But spidy is tough to clean up :)

@PauloCereda Please find the attached file for the latest attempt on the proof. It's currently a little pictorial .....

I don't know to be honest my girlfriend showed it to me

@percusse Oh. :) It's a gymnast with a grumpy face. :)

@PauloCereda Yep that's it.
:)

@percusse: will you nominate yourself for the TUG membership? percusse pls

@PauloCereda I won't and I think I'm the only one that has a reason. I can't understand the articles so it would be a waste :)

@percusse Do you think I understand them? :)
@percusse: pls

4:25 PM
TeXnicians - TeXperts would benefit much more.
@PauloCereda hahaha

@percusse: please, nominate yourself.

@PauloCereda Let's do it this way. We currently have 8 slots and I guess nobody wants to stop it. Case solved. Watson let's eat at Burger King and analyze the damage on human body.

@percusse I have a better idea: so far, only a few people nominated themselves, so you can write your name and apply for the slot. Case reopened.

@PauloCereda Hmm....

@percusse LMAO

4:30 PM
I'm still laughing at this....
It's been 1 week.
I don't know where the original is though, they've spawned thousands copies.

They remind me of Pinky and the Brain. :)

@PauloCereda On another note, this Ghostery thingy really made FF quite faster

@percusse Really?

Yep, all the facebook, G+, and other nonsense is blocked so there is no rotating weirdos on the pages waiting to be loaded. :)

haha

4:42 PM
probably my usage is not heavy too. I don't open 26 tabs at the same time as some complain on Mozilla page.
I used to do that when I was curious about other things and when the browser was called Netscape Navigator ;D

@egreg Thanks for your newest answer... I think I should take a break from asking questions for a while :-)

@Jörg I like puzzles :) Do you really need to number lines?

@egreg It's related to my previous questions (referencing numbers directly from tables and making calculations with it). The idea is to show the line numbers in draft mode because it is easier to find the correct row in which the value of interest is stored. Otherwise I need to puzzle the correct row depending on whether there are \midrules etc. in the table
@egreg So now I know: Row 29 has this and this value

@Jörg You owe me a beer. :)

@egreg More than one, I think

4:51 PM
@Jörg Next summer I'll make a big tour through Europe just to claim all the beers that I earned. :)

@egreg I began using LaTeX exactly a year ago, and by now I am able to answer most easy question by myself.
4
@egreg Although for this question I expected the answer to be easy, e.g. just a redefinition of caption@hrule that I missed
@egreg Well, if you ever make your way to Nottingham we can go to Trent Bridge (famous Cricket site) to watch Cricket together with @DavidCarlisle ;-)

@egreg I'm safe in South America. :P

@Jörg That was probably the least problem. :) The most relevant was to teach threeparttable a new environment. Probably using \begin{etabular} instead of \begin{edtable}{tabular} is even better for your purposes; when you are not in draft mode any more, you can simply redefine etabular to do a tabular.
@PauloCereda Don't be so sure. ;-)

@egreg Uh-oh. :)

@Jörg Just 1742 km, according to Google Maps.

4:57 PM
@egreg Most of my colleagues are Italian, so it can't be that far away ;-)

@egreg Oh make sure you visit here too. I'll start from Kwak glass to the monk trappisten beers :)
Since no belgians around I can claim the credit

@percusse Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm terribly sorry, but the command lick does not exist.

@percusse Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm terribly sorry, but the command do does not exist.
@percusse Psmith, the TeX bot: I'm terribly sorry, but the command answer does not exist.
@percusse: I'm testing it! :P

@percusse Not a bad idea: Austria (lockstep), Czech Republic (tohecz), Germany (MarcoDaniel), the Netherlands (percusse), England (Jörg and Andrew); France on the way back (but they haven't so good beers).

Oops sorry.
@egreg You'll be wasted when you arrive France so you can switch to prosecco.

@egreg Where's Analândia in the list? :)

5:03 PM
@percusse Some good French wine (Raphink)

@percusse I seriously worry about egregs liver if he's really claiming all beers that he's earned in Europe...

@PauloCereda That's a slight problem: it's quite difficult to reach with my scooter.

@egreg You need some flying accessory. :)

@Jörg You mean an expansion problem? :)

@percusse Yes, too much relax is probably not good

5:13 PM
@Jörg \begingroup\beer\endgroup, so the effect doesn't propagate. :)

Does anyone know if there is a drawback to define \DeclareSIUnit\%{\char37} so that when using \SI{number}{\%} I can avoid writing \percent every time (makes the code more legible).

Gotta love this bot. :)

@JosephWright I wasn't sure if I should wait for you on an answer for the siunitx question- should I delete my answer?

@JosephWright Yay!

Hi. Simple question. I'm using p{width} in my table to get the headers to wrap, but the values in the column are left-justified. Is there some simple way to get them to center? If this is not already answered on the site, and if it is a reasonable question, I can ask it.

7:39 PM
@FaheemMitha I would recommend using tabularx and defining \newcolumntype{C}{>{\centering\arraybackslash}X} , example uasge:

Psmith is ready. :)

2
A: Tabularx can't center some column

SveinungWhen defining the last column, you have to put in an \arraybakslash after the \centering-command, i.e.: >{\centering\arraybackslash}X Your table preamble will be: \begin{tabularx}{19cm}{r >{\centering}X >{\centering}X% >{\centering}X >{\centering}X >{\centering\arraybackslas...

@tohecz This is for a journal, so I'm trying to limit the number of packages.
Is tabularx standard?

@FaheemMitha I would say so.

Thanks for the information. So with standard tables there is no way to center?

7:41 PM
@JosephWright: I'm not sure if I could capture the finesse:

@PauloCereda Named by a Wodehouse fan, perhaps.

@FaheemMitha Andrew named it. :)
We were thinking of Wooster, at first. :)

@PauloCereda Then he must be.
I think Jeeves would be a better choice.

@FaheemMitha I would go with Jarvis. :)
Or Ms. Potts. :)

@PauloCereda So apparently you are an Iron Man fan. :-)
or you just saw the movies, perhaps.
how does one use the tex bot?

7:46 PM
@FaheemMitha I used to read the Marvel comics in the past, so I'm quite reluctant in watching the movies. :)

@PauloCereda They're mostly quite watchable. Robert Downey Jr. is relatively good.
Though that Iron Man armor obeys no known laws of physics

@FaheemMitha We have !!/texdef parameters, which runs texdef, !!/choose opt1, opt2, ... that chooses one option, !!/ctan lists the CTAN news from the official list, !!/cricket fetches the news for @David, and !!/eightball question will display a yes/no type answer. :)

@egreg Quick question to what you said here: Is there a difference in code-quality if I do \ifdraft{\begin{etabular}}{\begin{tabular}}{l*{#2}{#3}}...\ifdraft{\end{etabula‌r}}{\end{tabular}} instead of including the ifdraftcheck into the etabular environment?

I am using the hyperlink package. When I click on a hyperlink of a figure, the view of my pdf reader stabilizes on the caption of the figure. How to make the view shift to the center of the figure? Is there a simple option to do this?
Sorry
hyperref is the name of the package.

8:22 PM
@ShashankSawant Hello! There's a question about it on the main site, lemme find it

The solution suggested is hypcap package.

@ShashankSawant exactly

I was just concerned that the hypcap package might not be as good as hyperref.
I guess I will just give it a shot.

@ShashankSawant hypcap is a sortof patch for hyperref, you load both!

A: href to an image label - how to jump to the image instead of the caption below the image?

Marco Daniel You can load the package caption. The default setting is hypcap=true. If you don't load the package caption, you can load the package hypcap. It is important that the package is loaded after hyperref. You can load hypcap with the option all. In this case hypcap has an influence on all float envi...

Actually, I think I got it...

8:26 PM
@egreg So something like this (for both tabular and tabular*)

\ifdraft{%
 \newenvironment{etabular}%
  {\resetlinenumber[1]\let\@centercr\relax\edtable{tabular}}{\endedtable}
 \newenvironment{etabular*}%
  {\resetlinenumber[1]\let\@centercr\relax\edtable{tabular*}}{\endedtable}

 \newenvironment{etabular}{\tabular}{\endtabular}
 \newenvironment{etabular*}{\tabular*}{\endtabular*}

@tohecz Thanks!

@Jörg I think that @ doesn't work in fixed-font posts. So let's call @egreg manually ;)
@ShashankSawant youre welcome

@tohecz Thanks...I think this is the first time I managed to format code here in the chat...

@Jörg shift-enter and "fixed font" button? :)

@tohecz I know, I know...

8:32 PM
@Jörg Are you going to use also tabular*? The patch to \threeparttable should be changed, of course. But that's the idea. However, you have to say \newenvironment{etabular*}{\begin{tabular*}}{\end{tabular*}}

@egreg Yes I patched \threeparttable accordingly (` {\TPT@hookarg{tabularx}\TPT@hookin{etabular*}}`)

This one is probably for @DavidCarlisle

:)

@Jörg I guess you have to say \TPT@hookarg{etabular*}.
You use \TPT@hookin for simple tabular environments and \TPT@hookarg for those that require a "length argument".

See?

@PauloCereda but I believe it should say Psmith, the TeX bot: The great oracle says: there's only one option to choose from.

!!/eightball Are we cheating?

@AndrewStacey Re your comment on the TUG thread: joint UK-TUG/TUG membership is usually very competitive with joining TUG directly!

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: as I see it, yes.

:) no more questions your honor.

!!/eightball should we stop?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: yes.
Damn it.

I'll be repetitive, but:
!!/eightball Is Paulo queer? :D

@tohecz Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: only egreg knows the answer.
@tohecz Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: you need to use emacs.

hehehehe
that was too obvious
Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: I can't decide if it is 8-ball or eightball.

Q: XeTeX and Luatex fail to display correctly biblical hebrew fonts

MikeTeXMy question is related to both XeTeX and Luatex; both fail to display correctly biblical hebrew fonts : more precisely, the text is truncated at some point, and the "nikud" (meaning something like accents in hebrew) is incorrectly positioned, as well as the diacritic other signs. Other free edito...

@tohecz Example and so forth needs editing in (to question)

8:49 PM
@Jörg I'm not going to argue with Donald Arsenau. :)

I have to agree with @wasteofspace: this is suspicious

@tohecz I suspect more lack of experience

@JosephWright yeah, so do I, but still... I was having my cursor over the "flag" button

On the TUG nomination thread: we've got at least two people not looking to be re-nominated, so there need to be some new takers!

@JosephWright Paulo is there ;)
@JosephWright btw, the OP is assumably French, considering the space in front of the colon ;)

8:51 PM
@egreg mh, it seems that including a line-numbered table (inside a float) within a text resets the count for the line-numbers of the text from that paragraph onwards
@egreg But I'll do some more debugging tomorrow

@tohecz I've added a comment which I hope is appropriate
@tohecz Yup, but need at least one more new person
@tohecz My plan is to give it a few days, and then start prodding people :-)

@JosephWright lol, you have some ideas?

@tohecz Alan's already provided a handy list :-)
It might also be good to see some 'unexpected' takers

@JosephWright actually, I was thinking about getting an individual membership some weeks ago... but I don't really represent TeX.SX (not even having 10k rep) so I'm not a good candidate

@JosephWright Just for the record what do you do with that membership anyway?
You can see from this question that I'm not a good candidate :)
