@juicifer Jack = nothing = NADA + L (Lambert) = NADAL, who is listed as runner up multiple times here, but never as winner.

Nice spot

@Chengarda right on the money

CCCC: Bright couple present frequency containing major key, near a swiss mountain (9)

2 hours later…
5:14 AM
fun fact: a swiss mountain is like a regular mountain except it has a few tunnels going through it
santa brings presents once a year so present frequency is 1/365d, or about 32 nanohertz
i'll be back later with more helpful c4 tips

We expect no less of you.

Toblerone is a Swiss mountain with nine letters. It even has ONE ("a") a the end. `:)`
@Chengarda Oh man, I even had the right tournament but couldn't see it! D'oh...
@MOehm maybe T₀ is present frequency? (though I think T is period rather than frequency), br_ = "bright" couple, and if LE somehow means a major key (I don't know music), then… we still wouldn't have it, since the TO would have to be after the R.
I'm sure if we stare at it long enough, we can make Toblerone work.
@Chengarda But I think we are looking for alpha Andromedae or ALPHERATZ = ALP (Swiss mountain) + A (major key) in HERTZ (a unit of frequency).
Def is "bright couple", because it's a binary star. Not sure what the "present" does, though. Probably just a link between def and wordplay.

1 hour later…
7:56 AM
Probably "bright couple [that's] present [in the night sky]"?
Not sure though
Anyway, I also considered ALP so I don't know why I abandoned that idea
8:56 AM
@MOehm That's it! I was thinking present as in showing, like the definition displays as the wordplay, but it was a bit weak.
Well, you needed something to link "couple" and "frequency" and "present" works, although I think the it would work better the other way round, i.e. "{wordplay} presents {def}". My first idea was that "present" could clue HERE, so it also served as misdirection. `:)`
Let's keep with the theme ...
CCCC: Α Car might work (7)

Apparently there's a car brand named MAYBACH, but Bach isn't normally defined as "work"

Is there a way to complete a sudoku where you have to make sure all even digits are orthagonally connected to all the others, while avoiding 2x2 squares of even digits? It is possible without avoiding squares. Example with squares: So is it possible?

1:28 PM
"might" could also be the noun but I can't make it work
2:06 PM
@oAlt A Bach, could be a work by Bach?

@MOehm CAN OPUS, aka α Carinae
@juicifer Yes, that's it.
(Not especially fair, I'll admit. I had it sitting in my pool of unused clues but was reluctant to use it. But when Chengarda clued Alpheratz, I decided to use it and to make up for the cheap trick with a hint about keeping with the theme.)
4:33 PM
@juicifer Nice spot
And so that was what you meant by theme... I was about to ask if you meant you were hiding a theme in your clue answers all this time without anyone noticing. Turns out I bamboozled myself. (And yeah, that clue is indeed evil :p)

CCCC: Basketball turns into North Star? (6)

probably unfair. This is me not caring. Buahahaa
5:01 PM
oh sure, I'm a C4 meme now. I see how it is. :)

5:58 PM
@juicifer how do you get from "Car" to "Carinae"?
The constallations have three-letter abbreviations. Castor for example is α Geminorum or α Gem for short.
6:14 PM
makes sense lol
searching for "car" on the "Canopus" wiki page didn't reveal anything enlightening (pun unintended) lol

6 hours later…
11:55 PM
What the heck can "basketball" be parsed as lol
Unless it's "basketball turns", which probably indicates a type of turn in basketball, and then into could be IN?? ...I doubt
