Ah. Anyway, couldn't "the dip is maintained" be interpreted in a physical way, sort of how the expression "to keep a stiff upper lip" came to be derived from a physical way a gentleman was supposed to comport himself?

12:13 AM
I don't think it makes sense to interpret it that way, no.
Just substitute "remains" for "is maintained" and it should make more sense.

I'm thinking of a bit of good old-fashioned Amish shunning of a certain poster who is always asking questions he knows the answers for, but seldom accepting any answers.

Sooooo, just out of curiosity, do you get a lot of answers that call Americans illiterate for using words that are spelled wrong, or is this just an exciting abnormality?

In a separate issue, I voted to close the following (needs 2 more close votes):

Q: Example of ambiguity or misunderstanding due to "Internet grammar"

MaxpmI'm writing an essay on the misuse of grammar on the Internet and I'm looking for an example where using common abbreviations/misspellings can lead to misunderstandings. For example: No, I too know two. no i 2 no 2. In this case, different words are "condensed" into the same abbreviation...

@RD01 — Whatcha talkin' about?

Hmm, I'm a chat newbie, why doesn't my linkamadoohickey expand as nicely as yours?

You gotta put it entirely on a new line.

Interesting. Eventually, I'll help you out with the close votes, but for now I can only lurk.

1:26 AM
@RD01 — No, just that guy.
I wasted a precious rep point myself downvoting him.

I ignored the answer until he started commenting. I feel petty, but ... oh well.

A parochial world view is irritating on this site.

I was just hoping, considering the potential dichotomy of British and American English that this wasn't a normal occurrence.
It's like reading yet another Java vs C# thread on SO :)P
Anyway, I apologize for interrupting, who's getting the Amish shun?

Oh, yeah. Hot damn, I so miss SO ...
Not.
The only rep I get there anymore is passive rep.
@RD01 — Look at my recent activity and see if you can guess from my comments.

Well I've been reading and voting on old questions :)P
Oh yeah, I've been skipping those questions. They seem to get an inexplicable number of votes though.

(de-lurks) @Billare et al: regarding the "Cheers" question and the answer with the graph - that answer is very entertaining (especially if you are British) but please don't assume that what it says is necessarily true - it is a mixture of things that are genuinely true, common stereotypes, and gross exaggerations - put together skilfully in a humorous way... but IMO it tells more about the responders views of British society than about the society itself :)

A: Is "Eskimo" a universally offensive term?

vgv8It is offensive in Russia. Though, Russians mostly use the term "chukcha" (single from Chukchi, or Chukchi people). 95% of Google search results by чукча(chukcha) are anecdotes or parts of absurdopedia.net, very detailed but sarcastic narration. And the term itself is rather synonym of ane...

Paraphrasing, "It is offensive in Russia. Except that it means ice cream, so it's not offensive at all. But there are some other offensive terms in Russian. Thought I should mention it on a site about English." Pure gold.
On a second thought, no, that doesn't even begin to capture the splendid brilliance of his actual answer. I apologize.

12:07 PM
@RegDwight: Yeah, you missed out the "here's a link to an irrelevant website, also in Russian"...

@psmears I must say I didn't even click on that link.
But now I have. And it's just yet another totally random collection of pseudo-funny and NSFWish pics. Not even remotely related to Chukchi, Eskimo, or anyone or anything on this planet or in this universe.

12:24 PM
How do?
What, no love for me this morning? Maybe I should just go to work, where I am universally adored.
@RegDwight, @psmears: /poke /poke /poke

Oh. Hello.

What up, dawgz?

Here's some luv 4ya

Awww, that's so sweet.

Seen that movie?

12:35 PM
Noop.

How come!

This is more how I'm feeling this morning:

Haha, I don't even have to click on that.

You've seen Action!
It's really worth a click anyway.
Especially for the end line.

Sure. In fact, in my mind, Jay Mohr is forever tied to that show and that show alone.

12:37 PM
He's done other things, but he freakin' nailed the part of Peter Dragon.

That's the thing. I can't watch him in any other shows/movies. I can't stand him in any other movies. He appears so freaking miscast in any other role. I always have to think of Peter Dragon.

Hey

My favorite scene from that series is where he's talking about the product placement in a kids' movie from a cigarette company. He says, "Wait a minute, let me get this straight. You want me to sell cancer ... to children ... for less than 3 million dollars?"

Haha. Yes. And that's just one line. And some shows don't even have that many.

At first I thought this video referred to a certain user on this website... but the last line seemed to make that impossible.

12:40 PM
If you watch the DVD extras, the writers talk about how they didn't have to do much writing at all. Most of it was just dialogue they'd overheard.

I'm ready to believe it.

What made me think of it was saying "that's so sweet." It's what Peter Dragon says to the prostitute when she offers to get a girlfriend and do a three-way with him as a Christmas present. He just looks at her with a (fake) tear in his eye and says, "That's so sweet."
@RegDwight: Grats on reaching virtual 20K rep, btw.

@Robusto Thanks, not quite there yet. Still a few points missing. I've been downvoting lots of stuff lately.

Hence the "virtual" ...

Yup.

You show up on questions with the double sawbuck.

Don't forget the k.

It's right there, at the end of sawbuck.

Meh, I'm probably confusing it with another construction, now that I think of it. Je mehr, desto besser .... that kind of thing.

There is also the one about so-called correlative conjunctions.

12:58 PM
That's what the question I mentioned is about, actually.

Yeah but that isn't one where the term was actually used (I think?).

I retagged to include conjunctions. But there is no correlative-conjunctions tag.

2
Q: What defines a correlative?

LPCI have come across a number of expressions (both...and..., if...then...) which are named as "correlative" in different grammars (namely Quirk et al.). The question: What makes an expression a correlative one? Do you know any definition in the Literature?

You even answered it yourself.

Guggle-fu ... I like it.

Um, don't tell me this is the first time you hear it.

[Silence]
@RegDwight — You're totally on my ass this morning. What gives?

Huh?
I'm just asking a question.

Colour me similarly amazed

Wow, how did I ever type Guggle?

Q: Can anyone tell me what the suffix "-fu" stands for in the following sentence?

Liu If you want to take advantage of some other Spring-fu, like some of its aspect-oriented features, then you’ll need to use this heavy-handed, direct object management technique.

That was well before my time here.
[Cringes] Don't judge me!

But that wasn't well before your time on this planet. [Judging Robusto as hard as possible]
Them young kids these days like their suffixes Asian.

I come from another planet. I only recently arrived on this planet you call Earth sometime around the time I started posting on English.SE.

Don't mess with @RegDwight, he's a black belt in origami

Hold on a sec, I have to look up "kids* in the dictionary. It's something like cubs, right?

2:34 PM
Yeah, cubs without all the hirsutism.

Hold on a sec, I have to look up kids in the dictionary. It's something like cubs, right?
Now, hirsutism I get. It's not a hard word. But cubs?

Feb 23 at 11:06, by RegDwight
Lots of echo in here.

And while we're on the subject, what would a "click cub" be? I'm just curious.

Simple. Click is a very popular misspelling of chick. It doesn't mean anything, it's just a typo.

How popular?
Like, invited to the prom by more than ten people popular?

2:37 PM
It's well over 9000 now.

Like, Prom Queen or Prom King popular? That popular?
Like 10K friends on FaceBook popular?

Like Prom King of Prom Queens popular.
Whoa, speaking of over 9000, ArthurRex is pulling an AttilaNYC on this site, too.
A 400-rep bounty.

ArthurRexAre there other literary examples where-in a character or subject eventually morphed into descriptive verb/genre?

It ought to be a community wiki question, to be honest

2:41 PM
Meh, all the good answers have been taken.
And I agree, community-wiki for sure.

What about syphilis?

Lovely girl

That's a character name, and a genre.

Syphilis is already community-wiki. Anyone can get it.
I bought a lottery ticket on that one.
On the plus side, if he accepts an answer, he may drop to where the automatic controlsl kick in.

Frankly, I think you misunderstand his intentions. I don't think the bounty in this case has anything to do with the "correct" answer not having been posted. He's playing with you, and you're falling for it.

2:55 PM
Oh, you are so right.
Devious minds think alike, what can I say.

In fact, it might be related to this comment of his: "Cee U Next Tuesday – ArthurRex Mar 1 at 20:03".

@RegDwight — I'm thinking we should suggest that he go and create a site for euphemisms of swear words. I already have a name picked out: Frickipedia!
Aww, come on, lighten up.
BTW, I put in my vote to CW his ass.

Is there no one having permission to hard-delete any post even mods?

Devs can.
Devs can nuke this site from orbit, wholesale.

@RegDwight: If you're going to call in the devs, don't forget that the US government is probably also capable of raiding the DC and dragging off the equipment... :)

As long as they don't drag off my Lego, meh.

@RegDwight — It's called "breaking the build" and I'm sure they do it at least once a week.

Well, not on my watch.

Are mods able to view deleted comments?

No. Those are gone, never to return.

I forget the answer to this, but do you also see who upvoted and downvoted questions and answers?

4:40 PM
You mean mods? No. Voting is anonymous. But we do see suspicious patterns.
So if you go and upvote all of vgv8's posts, or downvote all of nohat's, I would notice.

Curses. You caught me.

But if we all went and downvoted vgv8's and upvoted nohat's, you wouldn't?

I'm actually vgv8 on another account. How did you find out?

@Rhodri That is left as an exercise to the reader.
@Robusto You make the same grammar mistakes and use identical vocabulary.

And I have a preoccupation with the meaning and usage of swear words.
And etymology of same.
And I want to know WHY things are as they are with English language.

4:45 PM
I also tend to notice whenever someone spray-paints Romani ite domum 26 times on walls in the forum.

Yeah, sorry about that. I still owe you 74. I'm working on it.

Romani ite domum Romani ite domum Romani ite domum Romani ite domum

Martha is helping me out.
But he'll be able to tell your calligraphic style from mine, I think.

Yeah, sorry - no matter how hard I try, my calligraphy always looks like my handwriting. It's kind of depressing when your batarde looks quite similar to your humanist minuscule.

Yes. I'm seeing that unusual pattern in the mod tools. You're not Robusto, Martha! Ha!
Now I know everything!
vgv8 = Robusto ≠ Martha. Fascinating stuff.

4:56 PM
Martha is pretending to be her sister, btw.
I think Dan Brown is coming out with a new book, btw, called English & Usage. Loosely based on the life and exploits of @RegDwight. Tom Hanks has already been tapped for the film role.

Woe is me.

It seems that users can offer a bounty higher than their rep point

No way. Link or it didn't happen.

@Fountain Ah, no, I made that mistake the other day.
The bounty gets deducted from their rep when they offer it, not when it's claimed
You're thinking of ArthurRex, aren't you?

5:07 PM
But he have no rep point to offer now.. neg rep is allowed?

bnakrupt

He has no rep to offer because he has already spent it on the bounty you're looking at.
It's kind of like your credit card company putting a hold for some ridiculous amount on your credit card just because you checked into a hotel.
Like, they'll put a hold for $500 on the card, but you only stay for one night at $80. They just want to make sure they'll be covered.

Laterz, @RegDwight.

english.stackexchange.com/questions/14931/… so, it's not possible for anybody to get the bounty in 7 days?

5:23 PM
@Fountain: Yes, they can - the reputation for the bounty has already been taken off the asker's rep and put in a secret holding account in a Swiss Bank. (Well, OK, I'm not sure about that last bit, but you get the idea...)

@Martha So.. bounty is deduced the time when you start one? I thought when there is an acceptable answer
you typed faster than me
I didn't read it carefully... Rhodri mentioned it already...

Ugh. The carrot stick I just ate was all bitter and icky-tasting.

Carrot stick. Yuk.

Well, yeah, I tend to agree. Which is part of why the scale doesn't agree with me.

The bathroom scale?

5:32 PM
Yeah, sorry, that was less than clear.

I should say, the lying, mocking, good-for-nothing bathroom scale?

Yes, that one.

The "I don't care if you're large-boned, I'm going to ruin your day" bathroom scale?

Yes. The one that keeps going up when I diet, and stays the same when I don't. The one thing it never does is go down.
So, do I dare attempt another carrot? Or do I condemn them all for the offenses of one?

Haha "do I dare attempt another carrot?" I know the feeling.
Scales suck pretty much.

Ok, and now there's something wrong with the online feed of my radio station. The program guide says they're playing Appalachian Spring, and I'm not hearing nothin'. I'm upset.
I give up. I think I'll listen to one of their webcasts instead. wwfm.org/webcasts_mirror.shtml

There are some very quiet sections in Appalachian Spring.

Not 10 minutes worth, though.

Btw @Martha, do you have any recommendation for a classical web station? I have tried several and I can't decide. Most are pretty decent. Not too much talking is of course a pre.

@Cerberus — Classical music stations pride themselves on shutting the eff up most of the time.

@Rob: Yes well not the only decent one in Holland! It has some good music, but also commercials and some horrifically accented presenters that are unable to shut up.
I mean, come on, if you're 100% government paid, at least you can skip commercials! Countless other EU countries have commercial-free ones.
/rant
Radio Swiss Classic is quite good, even though it refuses to join us.
Rete Toscana Classica is also OK.

Beethoven radio (beethoven.com) is good in that it's specifically web-based, i.e. it doesn't bug you with local weather reports that are totally irrelevant to you. But personally, I find their "classical music without the attitude" approach off-putting: my local classical station has much less attitude.

@Martha: Thanks! I can't find the feed: or do I need to register?
Yeah the weather reports can be annoying. I used to listen to WCPE for some time, which even had endless pledge drives. And Strauss marches.
Oh, wait, I need to pay for beethoven.com... a pity. Then I think I'll stay with my free stations.

I usually listen to WWFM, which is based out of Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. For nostalgia, I will occasionally tune in to KUSC in Los Angeles.
@Cerberus Sorry, it looks like they've changed things around since the last time I visited. I can't find any free stream, either.

6:00 PM
OK. I am trying WWFM now.
Hmm I don't hear anything.
Still nothing in different browsers.
Radio Swiss Classic is OK in my opinion:

@Cerberus Like I said above, their stream cut out on me. It does that occasionally. Sometimes, hitting 'stop' and 'start' on the stream helps. Today is not one of those days. I think the fault lies with the stream provider (abacast) - somebody over there needs a kick in the pants so they'll deal with whatever error message is holding things up.

@RegDwight — Grocery-shopping must be an elevating experience in your country. Around here we just grudgingly shop for groceries.

Hmm, I'm really not sure I agree with the rationale but there it is...
Can't vote to close myself (yet) but would probably have done if I could

Yikes. I have to go now, or I'll be late.
Bye all

@psmears the story goes like this. We have a whole lot, an awful lot of old questions on improving one's English, by ESLers and native speakers alike. When we were in beta, they kind of sort of seemed okayish. Then we graduated and agreed that they should be off-topic.
So I started to hunt them down quite aggressively, closing them with the help of @Kosmonaut. Most of them had like 1–3 votes and just a couple answers. This one has 8 votes, and a whopping 10 answers with up to 8 votes each. Hence my drumming up some support for closing it.
I just don't want to step on too many toes at once.

7:10 PM
Is there a way to migrate the question to writers.stackexchange.com (and would that be appropriate)?

Possibly. I'll ask around on the Teacher's Lounge.
One problem might be that it's too old already.
And it might end up being closed as a dupe there. I imagine they must have lots of similar questions by now.

7:23 PM
There are so many questions where I hesitate to vote close... I'm so glad I am no moderator.

@Cerberus On the other hand, you are actually free to miscast a vote every now and then. It would still need four more.

@Reg: Absolutely; but the rules are still not clear to me, and I often feel I need more certainty before I vote.

@Martha Hey, sis, that's my line!

@Cerberus Well, there's always this, for starters:

But if not I still feel those on-topic and off-topic topics are a bit arbitrary; since the spirit of the law often escapes me, I often feel unqualified. But thanks for that link. I think I have read it some time, but I will read it again. I have read the FAQ several times too, but I can never remember what was in it when I need to...
Oh, well, I think this website is doing very well in any case; problems appear to be minimal, unless I am missing something. Now I must go. Bye!

Q: When did the term "scientist" overtake usage of the term "natural philosopher"?

Jared UpdikeThe word scientist comes from the Latin scientia, but when did its usage become more prevalent than the term natural philosopher?

All the answers are making me kvell

That's... a lot of graphs!
And yeah, you started it.

Pie is exactly three!

@nohat You won't find these answers in any typical English usage site. Users there usually don't have technical backgrounds.

@Robusto Я Таня, я дура, но я вот нашла корень из двух.
I'm Tanya, I'm stupid, but look what I've found: the square root of two.

I wish I knew how to say "whatever" in Russian. But it's nice that you outed yourself as Tanya. I thought your name was Alex.

Just count the letters and write the numbers down. Doesn't work for the English translation, sadly.

In related news, the Apple elections are over.
Whoa! @Martha is a sportsman now!

9:04 PM
Heh, so I am.
The timing of badges is a bit strange, though - I hadn't cast any votes in the past, oh, three hours or so.

9:32 PM
@RegDwight — OK, I'll bite. Apple elections? What Apple elections?

I gotta find a new English & Usage. One where everyone isn't a freakin' statistician.

Meanwhile, I am outta here. Laterz me hearties.

Aaaaand the answer is: English.StackExchange.com!
Knew it!

Hm. Come to think of it, "damn you" makes an interesting response to "bless you".
Perhaps I should suggest it somewhere here:

Q: "Bless you" & sneezing

BenjaminWhy do you say Bless you when people sneeze? Is there good reason or history? When someone sneeze, if I don't say Bless you, am I rude?

Or here:

Q: What alternatives are there to "God bless you"?

DaveDevWhat is the appropriate response when somebody sneezes? It's common to say “bless you” or “god bless you”, but to an Atheist that's meaningless. Currently, all I can think of is the German "Gesundheit", which means "health", I think. But I don't like saying that!

11:12 PM
Hmm. None of the answers mentioned blessing the person as being a reponse to possible brain loss through the nose. Maybe I just got that from Calvin & Hobbes.
Thanks to the C&H Search Engine.

Nice.
C&H are good.
Incidentally, it seems chat has become much more lively compared to a few months ago when I joined EL&U.

You're welcome.
