Like philosophy except we don't answer in a meaningful way, just reinforce insecurities.

If you ask "What is infinity?" on philosophy, you'll get a reassuring answer that infinity doesn't really exist, and the opinions of various philosophers on the issue, and it's metaphysical implications.

If you ask "What is infinity?" on existentialquestions, you'll get the story of the bird sharpening it's beak on a mountain. Not really helpful but very frighning

lmao
top voted question is "how do I use strikethrough in chat?" and the answers are all vague and mostly wrong

Q: What is the meaning of life?
Answer on Philosophy: There's no inherent meaning to life, but don't worry, you can make your own!
Answer on this site: There's no meaning to life. You're a bunch of cells made of atoms made of stuff we don't even fully understand yet. There's no real reason the universe turned out this particular way with these particular rules. Maybe there's infinitely many multiverses out there with all sorts of laws of physics. Maybe there's even one where you aren't a pathetic jobless loser eking out a miserable existence trying to find comfort on a random site without d

@mousetail Oh, oops. Didn't realize it was one of those public hackmd things.
Yeah looking at Computer Science's language-design tag (which also includes compiler design), I don't think we've got much overlap

Q: Do we have free will?
A: If we had free will, do you think any of us would be living the lives we're living right now? You are no different from a turd flushed down the toilet, following the pipes where they lead. Some turds end up in one place, some end up in others, but at no point are any of the turds making any decisions, it's just where your creator decided to defecate, whether they ate Taco Bell before, and some other stuff not in your control that affect what happens to you
Wait what's wrong with putting it on Reddit?

9:14 PM
Anonymous publically editable documents and Reddit don't mix well

*facepalms* Right, should've thought of that

Do y'all think it'd be allowed to announce this on CGCC Meta? it's pretty quiet there, not like we'd be disrupting anything, and I think there'd be a lot of overlap between our sites
Lemme check other per-site metas to see if that's standard practice

What kind of conversation did I just start...
@mousetail "a bird sharpening its beak on a mountain" man that's hilarious and scary

There's this as precedent, but this saying it should count as spam
Looks like it's a site-culture thing
Math seems to have a lot of those, Anime.SE has had one, SO seems against them
Music and linguistics have as well
I think it's worth asking in TNB if they think it'd be appropriate

CMM: Do y'all think advertising Area 51 proposals on our meta should be allowed? Some sites seem to be fine with that, while others aren't.

It looks like most well received advertisements are made after the 60 followers are acquired, so maybe that would be a good threshold?

Question by Nathan Merrill for Programming Language Design

10:01 PM
ooh thats a good one
@RadvylfPrograms given what i see about other stuff like this, its best if the proposal is a subcommunity of the site its being posted on
which applies in this case to CSCC, and may even apply on CS

IMO they overlap a fair amount

@Goku no, i said "mathy"

Oh. Too bad

10:26 PM
51 followers
The redditing worked

indeed it did
think well get 60 before 1 am utc?

May I have RO powers? @RadvylfPrograms

^ pls

you both want?

10:35 PM
@Seggan Yes please

now The Fiveā„¢ are all ROs

I still haven't managed to login but I'll help here where I can

@lyxal my predictor says that by 12 am utc we will have 58 followers

damn 52

11:10 PM
54
predictions stand at 59.68 followers at 12 am utc
we might reach 60!

cmooon 5 more

> Am I interested? Yes. I even thought of a few example questions.

Am I interested enough to get login to work on Area 51? Hell no. I'd rather be chained naked to a fire ant nest.
> That sounds as fun as asking people how they think we should design a speaking language. Not very fun or practical at all
> whats wrong with other platforms of communication?
some of the responses on reddit

well
I hate to break it to them
but we don't actually require their assistance, according to @Seggan

11:25 PM
> I think the idea is good, but I'm not sure why the name area51 was chosen. It doesn't immediately give readers a clear sense of the intended purpose of the sub-forum.
> We already have a community here and on Discord. Why not just migrate yourselves there, instead?

also, someone should show #2 Conlangs.SE

@Ginger where do you think all the users are from?

I was referring to the ones who didn't like

wow

11:27 PM
45k views from reddit

@RadvylfPrograms Thanks a lot for creating this! I think that its a really great idea and I hope its going to be accepted ! :D
@lyxal I followed :)

excellent
exactly as planned

@lyxal tell them that its only the proposal site

@lyxal What was planned ?

@TKirishima as many people as possible following the proposal :p

11:32 PM
Where did Steggan went ?

the hivemind has split

@Seggan SAD :(

@Ginger 59.34 now

The design of Area51 is so strange

ikr

11:34 PM
twice as many followers as crypto in less than 24 hours
take that web3
4

@lyxal because some of use use SE...? (and dont have reddit)
ik u not the one posting, just making up counterargs as i dont have reddit

@lyxal ahahahah
+ the curve looks like y=x now, which is a good progression :) ! Hope it becomes y=e**x

Yeah but for now the progresssions isnt that linear

?
its going by the centerline

@Feeds yay its me

thats an unscaled graph
@Feeds praclang all cons, golflang nearly all pros :P
@TKirishima if you scale it you get ~ y = 2.9x

Yeahh its kind of obviousss :p
But actually, it could be useful to have a sqrt Unicode sign for example. Or we can also imagine a Sigma Unicode sign that could be the sum of an array. It could be more explicit than reduce((a,b)=>a+b); and in that sense I think that it could be better for readability

true
iirc julia has that
but you dont need a sbcs for it
just use utf-whatever

Yes! But I dont think that its an SBCS
yeah

11:50 PM
but why use a scbs when 1) everyones using utf 2) it adds more complexity 3) you have to install special extensions to read it

Well, that's the question! :p
