@AncientSwordRage Cool! Good luck with it, I got nothin'.

@Glazius yikes! It's sort of why I tagged it with

I mean, aside from "let me summarize the Burning Wheel magic system for you but keep in mind the entire thing is based on stories where there are The Outcast, The Mistake, The Forsaken Place which maybe are not things that show up in mouse stories so you'll be taking notes only so you can rotate them 90 degrees yourself later".
So, you know, "people with magic are set apart from society because magic has created some of the greatest threats we face and poisoned parts of the world".

@Glazius oooh I didn't know that about the burning wheel setting

It's low fantasy. That's generally the deal with magic in low fantasy, isn't it?
wizard magic, at least
Torchbearer's the same way though it's less pull-back-the-curtain explicit about it.

@Glazius ...huh. That makes The Broken Earth even more subversive in a way I hadn't thought about before.

12:45 AM
The opposite number "people with magic are a welcomed part of society because magic has ended some of the greatest threats we faced and helped heal the world" is p. common in what might be called "romantic fantasy".

(In the Stillness, people are taught that orogenes are existential threats because they cannot control their powers without extreme childhood intervention that only the government can provide, and that the terrible things in their world are the result of uncontrolled adult orogenes; this is all untrue as orogenes are the reason humanity survived the terrible things, and the government's exclusive control over their training is a way to enslave the orogenes.)
(The government wields the trope as propaganda to support its power and control those it perceives as threats)

@Glazius I didn't even know it was low fantasy to be honest

1:01 AM
@AncientSwordRage Well, glad to be of help there.

1:30 AM
@Glazius thanks

Q: Can Mind Blank be detected?

DomAfter thinking about uses for Mind Blank and how it interacts with a bunch of spells, I then tried to think of counters and ways someone could get past it with one problem always coming up. How do you know when someone is under its effect? Mind Blank spell description for reference: Until the sp...

@HotRPGQuestions I need a weaker version called Brain Fart, maybe a cantrip. Target is incapacitated, can't move, and can speak only falteringly. The creature automatically fails intelligence ability checks. This end the next time they take damage or at the beginning of their next turn.

3:35 AM
Probably too much for a cantrip. The most they seem to do is remove reactions or disadvantage on attacks

3:51 AM
> Doorway effect Once per scene when a character passes through a doorway for a specific purpose, you can have them forget that purpose until their next action resolves. You may then compel them with one of your fate points to forget the purpose for the rest of the scene, which they can buy off as usual.

@BESW I thought there'd be a good stunt for that type of thing
Here's an extremely dumb/creative idea. Put a small or larger creatures at one end of a closed corridor at least 100ft long, and cast Force Cage perfectly down the middle, specifying that it's 1ft by 100ft. As there's less than 2½ft either side, the creature can't even squeeze into the 2ft space left and is shot 100ft away so as to not be inside the cage or in the space to either side.
> Creatures only partially within the area, or those too large to fit inside the area, are pushed away from the center of the area until they are completely outside the area.
I initially thought of using it to push creatures off a cliff, but this is funnier. Makes me think if we need a tag /s

Q: Searching for late '80s/early '90s AD&D book of modules with specific encounters

Tim ReddyBack in the late 80s or early 90s, I purchased an AD&D book containing a dozen or more goofy/silly one-shot modules. I gave this book away as a birthday present, but I'm trying to remember what that book was called. For instance, one module was crashing some Kobold's party(?) where the Kobold ba...

@GcL ravelry is an interesting corner of the internet, in both the usual meaning of the word and the Spock-esque usage
@Catofdoom2 also, I second the learn a craft thing. Yarn rn is the only thing that’s keeping me from dying mentally as I get closer to ap test season
(And if you’re interested, there’s a good ravelry group I’m in called Teens of Ravelry that’s kinda quiet but fun)

Q: What damage type does Disintegrate deal?

mjschThe text of Disintegrate reads: Disintegrate: You fire a green ray at your target. Make a spell attack. You deal 12d10 damage, and the target must attempt a basic Fortitude save. What type of damage is this considered? The CRB, as far as I can tell, makes no mention of untyped damage. There are...

9:10 AM
@HotRPGQuestions vanilla damage

9:25 AM
I always thought of disintegrate as more of a mint flavor.

@AncientSwordRage This deals double damage to anyone who's allergic.
Suddenly thinkin about how at one point it's established that the four prime elements of Adventure Time are fire, ice, candy, and slime.

10:58 AM
slime is an element
a little gross XD

Q: If a player gets Lycanthropy, does it start immediately? Or does it take a while?

Diamond The HedgehogIf my players were fighting a werewolf and one of them got bit and failed the con save, would they instantly be able to transform? Or would they have to wait a while?

12:17 PM
@doppelgreener is vanilla allergy a thing?!
@doppelgreener I liked that

@AncientSwordRage Yes.

12:35 PM
@ThomasMarkov that's got to bite
it's in so much stuff

I think a lot of stuff these days has moved to artificial flavor.

Tragically so
The commonly available synthetic vanilla is the same compound as extracted from the plant, so allergies might still be impacted by it

@doppelgreener Interesting.
Vanillin is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H8O3. It is a phenolic aldehyde. Its functional groups include aldehyde, hydroxyl, and ether. It is the primary component of the extract of the vanilla bean. Synthetic vanillin is now used more often than natural vanilla extract as a flavoring in foods, beverages, and pharmaceuticals. Vanillin and ethylvanillin are used by the food industry; ethylvanillin is more expensive, but has a stronger note. It differs from vanillin by having an ethoxy group (−O−CH2CH3) instead of a methoxy group (−O−CH3). Natural vanilla extract is a mixture...
> Some people have allergic reactions to vanilla.[43] They may be allergic to synthetically produced vanilla but not to natural vanilla, or the other way around, or to both.
@doppelgreener Oh yeah, I bench pressed 315 yesterday!

12:53 PM
Oh, wow! Congratulations!
I've accidentally taken a week off from the gym, but I'm starting again tomorrow or Saturday.

Im taking two weeks off from any real work.

I'm at 100lb bench press, which is real nice.
300 is super impressive!!
I started doing preacher curls recently to address some bicep curl issues and wow those are another level of difficult. I'll be moving on to using the preacher bench and two-hand bicep curl barbell next time I visit.

I haven't done a bicep curl in nearly a year.
"Southern Chinese Pine is a pine native to northern China" is probably my favorite sentence I've read so far today.

1:55 PM
I wasn't practicing them either but I want them biceps so I've been making a point of doing them. :D
Bicep curls & lateral raises (I want them shoulders too) are the non-compound exercises I've made a point of working in.

Q: What is the standard terminology for proficiency?

TheDragonOfFlameI’ve seen a few things that say “you are proficient with X”, other things that say “you have proficiency with X”, and still others that say “you gain proficiency in X”. Is there a standard for these? For example, is one used for skills, one used for weapons, etc.?

3:40 PM
@doppelgreener I'm going to focus shoulders more next block. Im pretty sure my anterior delts are the primary weak point in my bench.

4:00 PM
@Glazius I like that approach more than "everyone uses (usually low level) magic all the time" - Weiss and Hickman did a trilogy (Darksword) about a world where magic was commonplace and non magical persons pariahs. (Hmm, there's a fourth book, Legacy. Might see if I can find it at 2d hand books ...)
@doppelgreener Not as appealing as parsley, sage, rosemary and time...

@ThomasMarkov does that query help at all? I know it's late but...

@AncientSwordRage Gonna have to modify it, but it's close

@ThomasMarkov oh, what needs modifying?

GcL
4:29 PM
@KorvinStarmast Codex Alera is also a setting that includes non-magical pariahs.

@KorvinStarmast next game i run i'm going to have a band of spice traders visiting various cities who call themselves the thyme travellers

4:55 PM
@doppelgreener 😁

5:27 PM
lol

GcL
@doppelgreener I suggest using the tried and true adjective-spice naming pattern for at least some of the characters and objects. E.g. Wheely Spice could be the name of the wagon.

5:47 PM
@GcL I see, I see. Strong Spice carries the barrels for bulk orders.

anyone want to talk?

I'm generally against the concept

6:04 PM
@doppelgreener Starry Spice navigates the trading vessel ...

Anyone play Vampire 20th Anniversary lately?

I could also name them after spices. Paprika's the strong one. (Star) Anise is the navigator. Mace is the accomplished salesman and negotiator of prices and deals.

My buddy's finally, allegedly, starting up the game he's been talking about for, I think, as long as I've known him.

This will have humorous complications when trying to reference spices.

@doppelgreener I LOVE paprika.
goes great in mashed potatoes

6:09 PM
"Cinnamon!" "Coming right up!" "No, bring yourself!" "Coming!"

Lots of things, but I put enough in mashed pots to turn it a little orange.

I love it to bits.

took me a couple reads - gotcha

Dill's the new hire who needs oversight.

I don't have Thyme here.
Life is short, man. Just make the most of it.
What? No. Thyme was supposed to meet us here.

6:11 PM
lol

Can I offer you some sage wisdom?
Look, I don't care what that crackpot has to say.

All of these people of course had these names before joining the company. It's a hiring requirement. Like Bolson Construction from Breath of the Wild. You don't get to join unless you fit the naming scheme.
@goodguy5 now the question is: Thyme and Sage are herbs, not spices, so do they get to join this trading company, or are they the rivals?

I never thought about the difference.
Sidebar: I just heard Willie Nelson's "I'm My Own Grandpa" for the first time and it's exactly as one would expect.
Oh, have we talked about Matt Colville's new project?
FLEE, MORTALS (kickstarter link)

@goodguy5 what is it?

@doppelgreener a new Colville-ized Monster Manual, essentially

6:19 PM
mind posting a link that points to kickstarter.com/projects/mattcolville/mcdm-monster-book/… instead of the update posts & gives a brief intro so we can star it?

d'oh one sec

Rather than making increasingly dangerous monsters, you can equip the occasional monster with the treasure that the party is hunting for. Recently had a battle between the party and a water elemental myrmidon on a huge giant crap wielding Wave (White Plume Mountain) - that was a very hard fight for the party. (I added another monster to the center room since the party is much larger than the notional 4 PC party ... it was the myrmidon)

@KorvinStarmast that's a great point!
"not making increasingly dangerous monsters" is part of the point of the project above. Making monsters feel better

6:53 PM
@doppelgreener Wait, Herb's the mechanic who keeps the space ship going ... 😂

Yeah, I could see that. :D

7:04 PM
hello??

GcL
7:30 PM
@goodguy5 I like it. Sounds like a combination of The Monsters Know What They're Doing and Fifth Edition Foes.

@Catofdoom2 heya
@GcL It's a greatly expanded concept from his video "action oriented monsters" or something similar.

GcL
@goodguy5 I think having an a la carte selection of encounter mechanics and vignettes is a lot easier than yoinking the ones you like from a stack of published adventures. I find the encounters, descriptions, motivations, and tactics are sometimes really well developed in published adventures. It's just a bit of a slog to read through them all to find the thing that might fit your campaign.

agree

Q: What are the mechanics for attacking a creature grappled by someone else?

Trevor DangbergI've successfully grappled a creature. What are the mechanics for someone else attacking said creature? Do they get advantage on the attack? Is there a higher chance that they hit me? Or do I just simply reduce the creature's speed to zero, and no other changes to attacks against the creature by...
