@Slate Hmm, Defender of the Unicorn was a last-minute addition last year when Winter Bash was in full swing.
@Wolgwang Thanks, I still wonder though if that hat’s automatically awarded when the status-completed tag is added or manually awarded.
I got it within 5 min of the status-completed tag being added.
@Slate Both hats are indeed elusive.

@12944qwerty I don't think hats ever check other hats network-wide, but I could be wrong about that.
@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Lmk if you're still having trouble with this tomorrow.
@Panda That's cool, didn't know that!

@Slate Found the comment by Yaakov last year!

@Panda Yes - based on last year's Winter Bash I expect they'll be awarded somewhere between 12-24 times by the end of it. But it's hard to predict! Helping Heart will be awarded with increasing frequency as WB passes, but Three Buried Pennies might not.

I made the hat myself this morning (using a retired hat from an old winterbash as a template). No more design time available for this year. Waddayathink? — Yaakov Ellis ♦ Dec 22 '20 at 15:58

Nice find.

1:57 AM
@Slate Sounds kinda of like Red Baron last time.

Don't know it, what was it?

@Slate “earned by giving an answer scoring 5 or better to question that had a score of −3 or worse at the time of answering and later rose to a score of +3 or better”
It appeared for a few Winter Bashes under different names and it’s usually awarded to <30 users.

Yeah, makes sense.
To be honest I would guess Helping Heart is the most complex WB hat trigger we've ever had. But that's only because it grossly outpaces everything else this year. It requires at least two people to obtain - and most commonly I'd expect three, four, or even possibly five participants.
It's also the most rigorous this year, I believe. It would be extremely difficult to game without extensive use of sockpuppets.

@Slate That sounds very interesting!

2:14 AM
@Panda that is incredibly difficult dang\

@12944qwerty Yea, but there was one year when the Show Off Your Hats post had a negative score at the beginning and those who posted an answer then all got the hat later.

@nobody Slow trickle: for getting an upvote on any post on four separate days [in a row] without a downvote on any post?

do that every year

@12944qwerty What?

not you, panda's thing. I lagged out and sent that late lol

2:26 AM
@Wolgwang That would be making it more restrictive, slate said we had to get a tad bit less restrictive

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Wow 26 answers and 10 votes
not me still trynna figure out a golf challenge

@Wolgwang What about removing the "in a row" part?

@Xnero Hmm possible
@nobody Slow trickle for getting an upvote on a post on four separate days without including the day on which it is downvoted? @Xnero

3:13 AM
@12944qwerty Lol
@Wolgwang One upvote on this meta.stackexchange.com/questions/374172/… would prove if that is true or not

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward what do you think of this golfing challenge before i post it
You have a random string input which you then get the unicode code point of each character. Then, for each digit in each code point you get the binary number and take the sum of all of those binary numbers as if they were in base 10
i'll explain better on the question
shortest i got was 75 chars python for now
i have no idea what the title can be

3:31 AM
@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Can't upvote :-/ I have already upvoted it.

3:43 AM
@12944qwerty Sure!
Will try to answer :)
@12944qwerty Btw, could you upvote: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/374172/…
to see whether Wolgwang is right
@Slate When you mean tommorow... Like in what timezone :)

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward just upvoted that, see if it gave you the hat or not

np

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Can you delete your answer to missing avatar question? (It is outdated+ It will test Quadalogue hat)

@Wolgwang I tested that already
Didn't work

3:50 AM
@Wolgwang Why?

in Mathematics, 18 mins ago, by Wolgwang
Ah! thanks :)

@Wolgwang Maybe it is comment under an answer and then it gets deleted?

@Wolgwang It is!!
Got the hat!
Slow trickle
@JoeKerr Thanks

@nobody Possible @U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Can you test it?

4:03 AM
Ok

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward now?

No need anymore :)
@Wolgwang Done

Fingers crossed.
@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward 23 hats ಠωಠ

Haha
Is Yaakov back yet ಠωಠ

No, timezones...

4:11 AM
Answered it myself too

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Negative (ب_ب)

¯_(ツ)_/¯

@nobody Insert that in ` and

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Wolgwang Oh, now I see :)
Backslash is used for escaping
Did we confirm the trigger for one buried penny yet?

Nah
@nobody Let me ask the two burried pennies.
@Slate Two burried pennies: One burried penny+ the question gets an upvote ?

4:24 AM
what's one buried penny tho
Wasn't there a hat where if you comment under an answer to your postive question and they edit that answer, you get a hat?
... yes there is i just didn't see the notifications lol
no idea what I did to get each of these (except for the ones we know)

@12944qwerty You got Trialogue before monologue o_o

oh damn

@12944qwerty We know literally all of them :)

that might just be how they prioritize rewardign
oh we do? iddn't know we knew trialogue

@Wolgwang Probably got them all together, that's just the order the notifications showed up in
@12944qwerty Trialogue is that one

4:30 AM
ohh we didn't know quadalogue

@12944qwerty How did you think of that challenge? I also want to ask something on code golf ಠωಠ

I have no idea
I just was thinking binary seems to be a hard thing
then looped from there

ಠಗಠ I guess I am not creative ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ

i'm not either but i still managed that

Code golf on creating this:

@12944qwerty What do you think? It's too basic...

4:42 AM
E-Pic... does anyone else think its related to updating the profile pic?

@Wolgwang pretty sure that would be a dupe
@kesarlingHe-Him tias, let us know

@kesarlingHe-Him Nope...

@12944qwerty nope
@Wolgwang 😅

worth a try

4:48 AM
@Wolgwang how about adding a pic in one of the posts? (and maybe requiring a UV on it)

UV?

upvote, duh

@Wolgwang Y'know the answer to One Buried Penny isn't known yet, right? ;)

@kesarlingHe-Him thought it was ultraviolet

4:51 AM
Believe it or not, despite that, you otherwise nailed it, though. Barring one small but important stipulation...

the one buried penny?

@Slate um... it has to be a new post?

Wolgwang guessed that Two Buried Pennies is One Buried Penny plus the post gets upvoted. That guess is missing a tiny stipulation (not "new post"), but is actually ridiculously close. Also, "One Buried Penny" doesn't seem to have been identified, yet, so identifying Two Buried Pennies first is extremely funny to me.

the post is the question or the answer?

4:54 AM
;)

i saw it barely
struggling to remember it

At any rate, question or answer is generally what's meant by "post"

yes, but it's definitely going to be one or the other... which one?

You're looking for the wrong little stipulation. My hint is that the stipulation acts as a check to prevent misuse of the site to get the hat.

cannot have been downvoted?

4:56 AM
That one's not it! It's a good guess, though.

it'll be hard to get it without the one buried penny
(the stipulation i mean)

@Slate Spotting Scope: raise 10 flags

in a day?

no, on a site

@CinCout You are on the right track

4:59 AM
@Slate 10 successful flags?

hm, how do i know how many flags i've raised on a site since WB started?

You are still on the right track

that's to free of a constraint

yeah i know that... i only have 6 till now
did you get the hat?

5:00 AM
@12944qwerty i did

@Slate do you have to be the first to raise the flag?

No

So raising 10 successful flags... any variation of numbers of flags will work? Like 15 or something?

@12944qwerty i got it right at 10
no less no more

5:02 AM
they were a mix of post and comments flag
@Slate Spotting Scope: raise 10 successful flags with at least one flag on comments?

Nope!

gotta play hot/cold man

@Slate Spotting Scope: raise a total of at least 10 successful flags on 5 separate days?

is there a hat that requires editing a question that causes it to reopen after it had closed?

@CinCout Nope. FWIW I think you need more data.

5:08 AM
@Slate ah. alright
i have it on SO too, but there's too much flag data to make sense of!

I currently have 9 flags.. gotta find another question
@Slate do they all have to be the same type of flag?
what about those posts being deleted?

(You made a lot of progress with what you figured out but as a puzzle-setter you should know I try to avoid 'lucky guess' kinds of situations. Don't let that discourage you - you've gotten a lot closer.)

@12944qwerty what do you mean?

Like all would be needs-improvement or mod attention or guideline, etc types

@Slate oh yeah, no lucky guesses this time around. Gotta give you that

5:11 AM
:)

@12944qwerty can be any IMO. Again, trigger not known so can never be sure!

Just got spotting scope without 10 flags

The puzzles are fun but I mostly focused on making these Winter Bash secret hat triggers award consistent, helpful, positive participation in ways that others in the community can validate. (With a few exceptions that are just for fun.) That makes the triggers a bit less obvious by default, because misuse prevention is built in.

@12944qwerty where?

SO
9 flags since Dec 15 (I think my time?)
10 flags but only one has yet to be helpful

5:14 AM
@12944qwerty can you recount? pretty sure you missed one

Maybe 5 flags within 24 hours?

@12944qwerty maybe that's the trigger then? Raise 10th flag when 9 are already successful?

No
I raised 8,then one still in review then one helpful one
Maybe 5 flags within 24 hours that got posts deleted?

@12944qwerty tag the mods

@Slate ^^

5:16 AM
(It was a bit of a careful balancing act. I suspect there will be 2-3 undiscovered hats this year, and I'm ok with that. But I'll be extremely excited if the triggers to those are found.)

oh-

@12944qwerty wait no, can't be
@Slate fingers crossed

Y'all have every piece of information you need at this point (even if you are not thinking about it in the right way). That guess, however, is not it.

@Slate At this point it looks like there will be 5-6 undiscovered hats...

@Slate this is big @nobody. We just need to think in the right direction

5:18 AM
@Slate I believe we know what one buried penny is, we just didn't get the time frame yet

yesss let's totally figure out which way is the right direction
time frame?
oh
what is it

@nobody Eight have been discovered. Five, I've seen someone almost say the trigger to the hat, or even sometimes outright say it (but not ask for confirmation). Eight more hats remain past those, many of which will be awarded with increasing frequency. So, I'm hopeful.
3

Damn those 5 people

:D

am i one of them XD

5:19 AM
"or even sometimes outright say it (but not ask for confirmation)" you have got to be kidding me

I didn't write down who, unfortunately.

Wolgwang definitely is

Yeah I've seen two cases of "is it this? no it can't be" and then moving on.
And spoiler: it was actually it.

@Slate dude. wtf

It's been such an effort to keep my beak shut.

5:20 AM
@Slate that's not your job anyway
@Slate i can imagine

@Slate please dont?

:D

@12944qwerty What?

@Wolgwang Slate had wrote something then deleted it...
and now i forgot it

@12944qwerty -_-

@12944qwerty Man, I used to have my chat set up so that deleted messages wouldn't be deleted for me. Don't know why I stopped doing it.

sounds illegal lol

@CinCout I am thinking of reading all the messages in this room then 😎
@nobody How ?

@Wolgwang hell of a task if you ask me

5:27 AM
@Wolgwang Modified the main chat script.

@Wolgwang good luck to you. If you do manage it though, you'll be the one to locate the maxmum triggers this year

I think we should not had skip the hats whose trigger were 'close'.

@Slate any hat for that? :P
@Wolgwang spotting scope is the latest. Give your inputs

@CinCout For identifying the most triggers?

5:31 AM
@nobody yeah

I haven't been keeping track :(

@CinCout They used to have something of the sort in the past. But turns out things tend to get a bit ugly when it comes to deciding who figured out the trigger. Because often, it's more than one person involved in determining the trigger.

@Slate Question, when a trigger requires a positively received votes, does it have to have more UV than DV? Or no DV at all?

Hmm, I'm not sure I understand the question.

@Slate hence no hat :D

5:34 AM
> the question must have a positive score

@nobody makes sense

does that mean more UV than DV? So it sitll has positive votes...
or 0 DV with at least one UV

If the trigger says the question must have "positive score," that means more upvotes than downvotes.

i.e. "is the number shown in the vote total greater than zero?"

5:37 AM
yeah
@Slate Confirmation: Is helping hand when you post three positively scored answers under user's first question?

Three whole answers on a user's first question? No! :D

@Slate he meant on questions of 3 different users :D

yeah
doesn't have to be the same user
that would be weird

Also no.

5:41 AM
@12944qwerty It is related to comments.
Dec 17 at 18:27, by Slate
@Wolgwang Believe it or not, that's actually a bit too restrictive. You're very, very close, but the hat has been awarded in cases that haven't gone as far as you've listed.

@Slate or 3 different questions of the same user? Not as weird then

Yeah, also no.

welp i gtg sleep... hopefully a fresh mind after finals will help
bye

Enjoy finals!

are you crazy
who enjoys finals

5:44 AM
@CinCout That has been already discussed...
Dec 18 at 3:47, by Wolgwang
@Slate Different users?

What if I told you there was a secret hat for enjoying finals?

Dec 18 at 5:21, by Slate
@Wolgwang Not per text but it might've been implemented that way, idk.

wasn't aware

2 days ago, by Wolgwang
@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Also they are not three different users so that is implemented that way!

@Slate ha ha

5:44 AM
@Slate i would never get it

Can anyone post their theory that was 'close" to the actual trigger here:

 Get triggered! 🦄🧇

Keeping a note of secret hats' triggers that were very close.

@Slate Matryoshka, ask a question that get's 5 or more answers, and question score > 3

@Wolgwang how to find that out?

I think I am off a bit

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward another question hat? Ugh

5:54 AM
Just a guess lol
Or

i dont like asking questions just for the sake of it

@Slate Matryoshka, ask a question that has positive score, and self-answer also with positive score

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Dial in the question score.

@Slate So it's close?

Yes.
(All of the question hats, I believe, require other factors outside of your control, including confirmation that it's a good question, in order to obtain them, specifically to discourage folks from just asking random non-useful questions.)

5:56 AM
hello

@kelvin Hello!

@Slate of course. I just don't like asking them when I ain't really facing them

Then... don't! ;)

i didn't ;)

(Or if you feel like you'd want the hat, I'm sure you can come up with something you know that would benefit from being written down and shared with the world.)

5:58 AM
you mean like asking and self answering?

Not necessarily, but sure. Challenging problems skilled folks run into are good to write down by themselves, imo, even without an answer.

@Slate Matryoshka, ask a question that get's 5 or more answers, and question score > 5

5 upvotes with 5 answers and Matryoshka math.stackexchange.com/questions/4335944/…

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward That's as close as I think is practically achievable. Congrats on the discovery! Was that a totally random guess or something?
The little tiny piece you were missing, by the way, is that all the answers must have positive score.

congrats @U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward

6:02 AM
(But realizing that would require finding a question with four positive answers and one nonpositive answer, which is. Really, beyond unlikely to happen.)
I ask if it was a random guess because no one was even close to guessing that one.
You just kinda pulled that out of the blue, at least to my knowledge, which is pretty impressive luck. (Or skill, if it was deliberate.)
...and that makes the current split 9/5/7 (discovered/close/unknown).

@Slate YAy!
It was a total guess!
@CinCout Thanks

Trigger confirmed?

@Slate Hah
I randomly guessed

Look at me, bragging about how hats aren't guessable by luck this year. And now you come along...

Cuz I got the hat right around 5 answers and 5 upvotes to my question

6:05 AM
Trigger confirmed, yeah.

> Post a question of +5 score with >=5 positive answers
As it appears on spreadsheet
@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Well that's not luck, then! That's experience! I feel justified, now.

@Slate question score 5 or more or more than 5?

5 or greater

6:11 AM
Just came across a user with only 4 comments and helping arm. math.stackexchange.com/users/43239/clayton

That's a good find!

What is happening?

6:16 AM
Try to set on all sites

It is correct on all other sites ...

@U12-F̉͋̅̾̇orward Did that again...and fixed

Great
@Slate I know it isn't tomorrow yet but
no hat yet :(
bug manifesting hat?

You need 25 consecutive reviews where the outcome agreed with you. That outcome disagreed. So you are currently at 15 consecutive (I believe).

6:26 AM
@Slate how to find out the consecutive count?

Look through your history and open 'em in tabs?

@Wolgwang First to comment (+ve score) on two new contributor's questions?

no direct way right?

(Harmony, Rapport, and Consensus are all rather difficult hats to obtain because of the consecutive agreement requirement. But that's what they're for - they reward consistency.)

@Wolgwang Nah
Someone online for a test?

6:41 AM
Hi

Hi

I got helping hand. Do we know the trigger for that? I have an idea

@Eran No, but we were close....
in Get triggered! 🦄🧇, 1 hour ago, by Wolgwang
in Winter Bash 2021, Dec 17 at 18:25, by Wolgwang
@Slate Helping hands: Post three positively scored comments under a users' first post and the OP edits the question after the comments?
in Get triggered! 🦄🧇, 1 hour ago, by Wolgwang
in Winter Bash 2021, Dec 17 at 18:27, by Slate
@Wolgwang Believe it or not, that's actually a bit too restrictive. You're very, very close, but the hat has been awarded in cases that haven't gone as far as you've listed.
@Eran What is your idea?

I think I got the hat for a single first question where I posted a comment, the OP replied, I posted another comment and the OP replied and edited the question. And only one of the comments was upvoted.

@Eran Have you posted other such comments?

6:48 AM
BYe bye first position :p :D

@AnkitSharma :'-)

Oh, wow, I didn't realize you'd been dislodged!

@Wolgwang now that you mention it, there was another first question that I commented and was edited later.

I got the easy and random secret ones, now not getting any

@Eran So two such comments only?

6:52 AM
@Wolgwang two questions with comments. Each with two comments, but maybe one is enough. One comment was upvoted in each of these questions

cleanmup hints or guesses?

I was trying to get helping finger, but ended with a full hand :)
cleanup was usually for deleting 10 old comments. Have you tried that?

@Eran Matches with my theory if I change the number to 2.
@Slate Helping hands: Post two positively scored comments under a users' first post and the OP edits the question after the comments?

@Wolgwang Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding!

Is that a blue jay chirping sound :) ?

6:56 AM
@Slate Hey, I gave him the details :)

And one more hat falls...
Hahah, congrats to you too, @Eran :D

its a good morning
