The current count is 96 - likely because the badges are awarded on a schedule - and it hasn't run since the last vote was cast. :)

ah, that's what I suspected :) yeah, can't scrape faster than you issue them (yet)

Yup. :) Nothing for you to worry about. :)

12:19 AM
you know that a single mention of an off-by-one error can cause severe PTSD in a programmer, right? :)

12:30 AM
:D ... Oh?
Sorry - I will try to avoid harming the helpful people :D

I see - I am doomed then. I am a cat

Cheers, can the three candidates explain in a few words their qualifications (perhaps academic) regarding English? Cheers.

I wonder if it would make sense to have a @candidates ping that only works in an election chat that would ping all of them. I think only @AIQ is pingable here atm.

That'd require teaching chat what elections are and tieing a chat room to a specific election. :) Not impossible just more work than we have space for right now. :)

[ahem - points at the bot] I do not think we need an update to chat to be able to do that :)
how many candidates are here?

No candidates are in the room

^ live query
there is also a way to get all "pingables" for a given period of time
but it would make sense to make the command available to privileged users-only to mitigate the abuse vector it exposes

The problem though is that unless the candidates are in the room they aren't pingable. We could put candidates in the room as part of their nominations I guess.

1:26 PM
well, they are pingable for 7 days if I am not mistaken

The system can be granted permissions to superping people - but there's also the concern about abuse of the tool, so we'd want to balance that.

If they've posted in the room right?

(It'd work the way the mod summon tool in the TL works, @ColleenV)
Nah, Superping doesn't even require that they have a chat account. It's... really super. :P
We're probably cross-talking a bit.

Well, with superping the candidates can't decide whether they want to be pingable or not though

the closest the bot can get to a super-ping is actually inviting users to the election chat room, methinks. But I am really uncomfortable with that, and I think Samuel will be too

1:28 PM
Maybe there's an option on the nomination to join election chat

Or encouragement.
That'd be easier, yeah.

gently nudging to participate sounds like the best idea
on the other hand, a candidate deciding not to participate is a valuable metric one can base their ranking on too

Eh, I understand people not being comfortable participating in chat, especially if there's a language barrier

well, dunno, I think a moderator should be ready to take direct communication heads on regardless if they are an ESL or not - after all, they are the "exception handlers"

It may be that chat is a good spot for discussion about the election, but comments on the nomination are better for interacting with the candidates
Chatting privately with a community member is very different from group chat
I think in all the years I moderated, I was only pinged two or three times in chat for mod-related business

AIQ
1:34 PM
@ColleenV This is all gone now

But ELL might be unique in how our chat is used

AIQ
Why not just mod-ping everyone if needed ...

@AIQ No, you just have to flip back to the nomination page

@ColleenV probably because mod-related business should be done with flags? :)

@OlegValter Which is why I don't care whether a candidate wants to use chat or not?

1:36 PM
fair enough

AIQ
How many people vote on the last day? last two days? last three? Why is it so long?

@AIQ Because it's a global site and not everyone visits every day.

AIQ
That's why I asked the percentage of voters on those last few days ... if the last day only gets say less than 1% of all voters, then is it really beneficial?

It's probably mostly the Australians voting so far, since they live in the future ;)
@AIQ How many users do you want to disenfranchise exactly? ;)

AIQ
1% or less
it's not a guarantee that anyone even votes on the last day ... the data will tell us that ... data from multiple sites and elections
if there is a pattern that no one votes on the 8th day then, there ...
Anyway, there are more concerning matters ...

1:42 PM
What is the advantage of shortening the election that merits trading those voters' opportunity to vote?

we got an approximately 0.13% increase in the percentage of voters in 12 hours on the last day of voting on SO. Given that only 3.34% cared to vote at all, the increase is ~4%
the distribution will likely be similar network-wise

Aw, why are comments locked on the nomination posts? The only way to address the candidates now is a meta post or chat?

AIQ
@ColleenV That's what I said ...
or meant

Candidates should be able to campaign for as long as I can change my vote.
@AIQ Yeah, I missed that they were locked

AIQ
@OlegValter Another question is would these people have still voted if the period was reduced by a day? haha no way to tell that without Bayesian
@ColleenV What? What campaign? Nothing more to do once the election starts ...
Or am I missing something
I still think people who've been here for a long time say >3 years, have high rep say >10K, and are current or ex-mods should have votes with greater weights

1:47 PM
@AIQ no idea - actually. I haven't tried building a graph of issued Constituent badges yet (this is how we count the votes live, kind of a hack) so not sure what the exact distribution is

@AIQ People should still be able to ask questions of the candidates and get answers.

AIQ
@ColleenV But campaigning means it's the candidates proactively engaging in the community trying to win votes ... right? So there is nothing we as candidates can do anymore, ...

@AIQ Answering questions from your prospective constituents to win their votes is campaigning
Fattie asked a question in chat earlier, but none of the candidates saw it

2:04 PM
Public service announcement: The election is in progress, and 201 (3.49% of 5,766 eligible) users have already voted! I can answer frequently-asked questions about elections (type @ElectionBot help for more info).

Cheers, can the three candidates explain in a few words their qualifications (perhaps academic) regarding English? Cheers.
@Fattie Hi! I do not have any qualifications related to the English language. I have just learnt English main through unconventional methods ...
I did however complete my master's from a Canadian university ... I speak English at work, and pretty much all the time when I am talking with people who are not from my country ...
mainly** {dammit}
@ColleenV Got it. Yeah.
@Fattie Is there anything else you'd like to know? Ask away. I haven't mastered grammar yet, but I am very well able to form grammatically correct sentences, and tell which are not.
Glor hasn't asked anything at all ...

3:06 PM
Wait, so the three candidates are not in this room ?
(could be I am in the wrong room .. sorry ? :o )

@Fattie I posted your paraphrased question on meta so the others might see it.

AIQ
@ColleenV Why not get Eddie/Glor to just mod-ping them

thank you so much. and I've just realized, I can see the answers to the 10 mentioned questions, on meta. cheers

@AIQ Because people not in this chat room might also be interested in the answers
There's only 6 people here, and thousands left to vote

AIQ
Oh so I have to answer in meta?

3:10 PM
Only if you want to
I cannot compel you ;)

I would say you should answer in Meta, yes.
Sigh .. I've just realized I was going to vote for the person who speaks English best. To which there's an obvious choice. But I guess that's different from being a moderator. :/

AIQ
Okay, this is going to probably hurt my chances ... but wth I'll post it ...

And now ... I'm thinking out loud in the chat room, sorry
Am I allowed to ask a new question on the Meta, or will that just confuse issues?

AIQ
@Fattie maybe add your new Q to ColleenV's post
number them

You're a candidate, i don't think you should comment on process. (I guess?)

AIQ
3:14 PM
@Fattie That's strange ... just trying to help

@Fattie You can ask as many questions as you like on Meta
