Q: Aliens secretly use video game to get humans to solve their problems

NJohnnyI recall a story probably 20-30 years ago (pretty sure it was a short story) in which a top gamer hears about a new computer game out that no one can beat. So he gets it and starts playing it. (Pretty sure it was before the age of playstation & x-box so it might be even older) IIRC the game had l...

Q: Where is the Timeless that Morgoth was cast into?

EugeneIs the Timeless Void the same as the Void outside Eru's Timeless Hall before the creation of Eä? Or are they connected as a continuous empty Space? In the Silmarillion, it is said that Valar thrust Morgoth - through the Door of Night beyond the Walls of the World, into the Timeless Void I've al...

Could you perhaps shed some light on the origins of your username? Because the first thing that comes to my mind for the combination of "V2" and "blast" is that of a smoking crater in WW2-era London, which isn't exactly a positive image. — SQB 29 secs ago

Q: Opening scene arrival on Mars to discover they've been beaten to it

Lucy DI'm trying to place a brilliant opening scene. Humans arrive by spaceship on Mars to great joy and celebration. Only to discover on arrival that mission-leader's long-standing rival has - using alternative tech (maybe wormhole?) - beaten them to it and is waiting for them.

@SQB that's an interesting question
I always thought of it as sounding like an energy drink

SQB
It's the kind of username that I would raise an eyebrow over were they a regular user. But I would hold a valued associate to a higher standard.

I've seen that name a lot and I can say I've never made the connection you did

SQB
My youngest having taken an interest in WW2 history lately may have been a factor.
I would raise an eyebrow just as high for a username, say, TheGreatArtiste.
I mean, it's not a name that has just one meaning, like EnolaGay.

Q: if earth was in star wars (clone wars era) how would things change

Elijah SanchAnswers must include impacts on both sides. What side would they join. How would events change. And would the empire still exist.

@SQB Really?
That thought never struck me, and it seems like a stretch even now that you've pointed it out.
Would WW2 be called VV2 in Dutch, by any chance?

SQB
WO2.
Wereldoorlog.

Q: What pushes Ender to the point that he is willing to wipe out all of the buggers?

Brad SmithNear the end of the 1985 book and near the end of the 2013 movie "Ender's Game," in "the final battle," Ender kills almost all of the buggers. What made him (a human being) capable of such an act?

3:01 PM
@AncientSwordRage It was, happily. Much of the frustration is that I thought I'd lost my answer, but fortunately the "draft saved" thingy actually worked.

I'm not used to things working.

I always understood it to mean the blast of a V2, too. Though, I never made much out of it since it's the internet anyway.
I thought it was kind of obvious once you spent more than 3 seconds thinking about the name.

@NapoleonWilson I spent more and three seconds, and I assumed it was an anergy drink ( I may have mentioend this before )

You have. What specifically reminds you of an energy drink, though?

@CerealBot that last speech bubble...
@NapoleonWilson about the name? V2 sounds like a drink name, and Blast is often used when advertising caffienated stuff

(That being said, it might as well serve as a catchy name for an energy drink, albeit a slightly politically insensitive one.)

3:14 PM
smartcups.com/products/berry-blast <-- like this sort of thing
@NapoleonWilson I mean v2 often just means version 2, right?

@AncientSwordRage That makes some sense indeed. Though, if I read V2 and blast, I would think of a random vitamin number only after the infamous rocket.

@NapoleonWilson thats fair enough
I would probably give a users here, especially a mod (and now CM) the benefit of the doubt that the rocket link wasn't the intended inference

Possibly. Actually, I thought it was intended but didn't ever see it as a problem yet.
Without it we'd also never have been to the moon. ;-)
There's also quite a lot of people having guns and murder in their usernames.

I mean, millions were killed in the napoleonic wars ... and my username in chat is less than peaceful

Q: What does Deadpool mean in this comic book page?

Brad SmithOn this comic book page, Deadpool says I guess if you want to do something right...you've got to do it over and over again until it sticks Does this mean that the only true end to a battle is a permanent end, and by definition an end that is not permanent is not really an end at all?

Q: I'm looking for a book about clones in a murder mystery

Chris RobertsIt sticks in my mind that it was one of the golden age/ transition sci-fi authors, but I can't remember who. The basic story was clones being murdered, and as it dies, the clone's final moments are shared with the others in over a psychic link/ merge. If I remember correctly, it was a clone, eith...

What is a golden age?

The first Golden Age of Science Fiction, often recognized in the United States as the period from 1938 to 1946, was an era during which the science fiction genre gained wide public attention and many classic science fiction stories were published. In the history of science fiction, the Golden Age follows the "pulp era" of the 1920s and 1930s, and precedes New Wave science fiction of the 1960s and 1970s. The 1950s are a transitional period in this scheme; however, Robert Silverberg, who came of age in the 1950s, saw that decade as the true Golden Age.According to historian Adam Roberts, "the phrase...
@AncientSwordRage Mr Wilson isn't named after that Napoleon though.

So basically WW2 again.
@Randal'Thor I'm sure he knows that.

@NapoleonWilson Everything comes back to Godwin if you try hard enough.

Q: Early 2000s show similar to Power Rangers

MarnaMy memory of this show is quite hazy now has it was such a long time ago I'm sure it aired somewhere between 2005/2008. I used to think it was a version of Power Rangers but it's not, it's something similar, though. It's about kids traveling thought space in a ship to save the earth and I think t...

Q: How did the Millennium Falcon lose its second rectangular dish?

Milo PThe Millennium Falcon loses its dish (or "rectenna") many times throughout the films: In Solo, Lando's perpendicular dish gets scraped off during the Kessel run. Milo PIn The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren smashes up his helmet, and in The Rise of Skywalker, he rebuilds it after retrieving the pieces. @Randal'Thor yeah and I don't think V2VBlast is named after the V2 bomber...
@NapoleonWilson I do indeed
@NapoleonWilson now I want a line of energy drinks named after dictators
That's probably quite insensitive actually 🤔

@AncientSwordRage We'll just leave it there. AncientSwordRage, everyone: he's had a wonderful mod tenure, years with a diamond, and then he made energy drinks named after dictators.

@Randal'Thor ...but you make one energy drink...
Does anybody have a good daily floof for us to pin?

My username sounded super cool when I created it some ten years ao and I recnetly discovered it means "crime" in Malay

Doesn't that just make it cooler? ;-)

Not if I'm speaking with a Malaysian person, I guess

Even more so, given you'll be speaking to them in the relaxed and cool context of a SciFi fan site or any other venue bearing made-up internet names.
For non-Malaysians it wouldn't make a difference anyway.
Of course if you're trying to use it in a job application for a serious Malaysian company, you'd be in quite a malaise. ;-)
Maybe try a Malayalam company instead then.

Q: Is Trisolaris an analogue of the Cultural Revolution?

BatpersonThe defining characteristic of life for the Trisolarans is that it is chaotic. Phenomena of the natural world which most humans would instinctively think of as fixed and eternal, such as tides and seasons, the rising and setting of the sun, are unpredictable. This could be expected to result in a...
