@Ben FYI I find it more fun when you ignore the golfing languages

@AncientSwordRage ...wat XD

12:38 AM
@Ben fixed XD

Ben
Ahh right lol

12:50 AM
In theory you could make an anydice solution

There is a long, long history on that site of people hating on and stridently defending golfing languages

@Akixkisu My two cents on the optional rule thing. Old questions about houserules could randomly become about optional rules because those optional rules suddenly got invented. Nothing, at all, about the question has changed, so I don't think the tags should either
@bobble Honestly, my biggest problem with them is just when people don't explain their answers. I also don't personally think they should cause harm because ideally it only matters how short your answer is compared to other answers in that language. But Fastest Gun In The West, the appeal of having a good score, the shock of being so short, and other things all lead to golfing language answers moving to the top
But yeah, more knowledgeable people have written far FAR more on that than I

1:12 AM
@bobble not hating, but if a language designed to be easily golfed needs to do more than just be well golfed to impress me
My latest English LU question is being close voted after being answered in the comments.... 😑

@AncientSwordRage yet another stack that doens't get what comments are for. :(

there's a question that came out for warhammer 40k asking about the crimes and punishments of the imperial law.

I dont know much about warhammer. Can someone verify that question vs this information i found on google and answer the question accordingly?

Warhammer Fantasy RPG 2nd ED -- Sigmar's Heirs pg. 29 - 31
Warhammer Fanatsy RPG 3rd ED -- Lure of Power - Pg 23 - 24

I looked it up on google. I know thats not the most accurate of things.
https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/188765/where-can-i-find-the-sidebar-with-a-list-of-crimes-and-punishments-under-imperia

this question to be specific
I dont want to answer inaccurately.

Sure they could, and any acknowledgement of that will be of use to someone seeking answers about the content of the question regardless of the official state of the rule.

This recently active question showcases the difference quite well: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/169623/artificer-armorer-guardian-attack-and-cantrips-like-booming-blade/187996#187996 the UA tag makes a content distinction, but it also applies to the non-UA. If I asked the same question about the non-UA, then it would be a different question.

@Thatguy I'm no expert, but WH 40k isn't WH Fantasy. It's like looking at medieval manuscripts to work out what crimes and punishments will be in the far future. If you don't know the answer, leave it for someone who does.

@Thatguy Then don't answer unless you have a well grounded understanding of the issue at hand. I've discovered that as the best course of action. 😉

3:26 AM
thats why i was bringing it here to bring attention to the question to get it answered. I wasnt planning on answering, just looking for verification so someone else could answer.

give it time, in a few days someone probably can

@KorvinStarmast Fair enough. Have a great night!!

aherocalledFrogI'm running Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, and early in chapter 3 there is a paragraph about Urstul fleeing the scene and that the players have a chance to pickpocket him. @Thatguy sure thing, I am hoping someone does crop up with an answer ... hmm, looks like Carcer has aline on it

@AncientSwordRage It's giving the scenario a structure, a path, for GMs and players who are used to the physical shape of a dungeon providing that structure/path for them.

@BESW I think I get it

@NautArch Hmm, trying to figure out if Bigby's hand would, or would not, get in the way of dragon breath, and I am thinking it does not, but maybe it does. What has us a little puzzled is this bit: The hand doesn’t fill its space - which may point to 'no, you can't hide behind your Bigby's hand to avoid dragon's breath' (until the breath reduces the hand to 0 HP)

@KorvinStarmast dragon's breath the spell?
Or a dragon's breath?
actually, doesn't seem to matter. Those effects are "all creatures in the cone". Cover doesn't help.

I think you could argue that it may grant cover equivalent to a creature of the same size. Which would probably be half-cover for a +2 to the dex save

@Someone_Evil Does cover help with saves? I mean, that opens up a big can of worms in terms of multiple creatures inside an area effect and if they 'cover'each other.

> A target with half cover has a +2 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws.
> A target with three-quarters cover has a +5 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws.

^^
There we go, although I'd still be pretty worried about using cover rules in area affect with other creatures.
That could get mighty tedious.

12:44 PM
It suggests half-cover for other creatures:
> A target has half cover if an obstacle blocks at least half of its body. The obstacle might be a low wall, a large piece of furniture, a narrow tree trunk, or a creature, whether that creature is an enemy or a friend. (emph added)

Does the breath go around corners?
If not, cover will help.
Okay, with Bigby's hand, it only provides cover if you use your bonus action to use the Interposing Hand option
> The hand interposes itself between you and a creature you choose until you give the hand a different command. The hand moves to stay between you and the target, providing you with half cover against the target.
So the hand should provide half cover against the cone, so +2 to the dex save against the cone.

Oh it isn't meant to occupy the space for the purposes of creature's movement etc.? I first read it as it not being the same a gelatinous cube, which fills its space
And it has a specific mode which is providing cover, that should settle it, no?

@Someone_Evil Yeah, it only provides cover if you use your bonus action to activate that feature with it.
And it moves with the target creature providing the cover no matter that creatures position.

And doing so forgoes using any of the fun modes of the spell

Unless the target creature has a strength score of 27 or more, then the creature can move through the hand.
@Someone_Evil it can keep the target creature from getting within melee range.

12:53 PM
Wait, it that the wizard way to go "Talk to the hand, ..."?
@ThomasMarkov I didn't say it didn't do anything. But I suppose I tend to see more proactive(?) approaches employed

It makes the wizard unstoppable in a dual with a melee only opponent.
Without a ranged option, a martial can do nothing to approach the wizard if there's a hand in the way.
And then the wizard can just roast the fighter from range.

1:14 PM
I'm still wary about bringing in cover rules with regard to other creatures and AOE.

@NautArch Yeah, too much overhead.
Is this a "designer reasons" question?
Seems to me the only way to know if something is an easter egg is for the author to tell us.

And it seems like one of those things where players will want it for them, but will be unhappy when their burning hands isn't as effective.

@ThomasMarkov Roast them while they (the melee attacker) have cover from the hand as well XD

So, i'mnot sure how to say this, so just gonna say this.
Rubiks hasn't been around for a long time and he hasn't visited main site in like a month. Do we need an election?

@NautArch the CM's get notified after 6 months of inactivity
@Rubiksmoose show yourself !

1:21 PM
@AncientSwordRage what constitutes "inactivity"?
He logged in today

@ThomasMarkov I think logging in counts

@Marq I found something that suggests the opposite of what you are suggesting from the SAC "If you grapple or shove an enemy creature, does that end a sanctuary spell cast on you? If you use the grapple or shove option in the combat rules (PH, 195), the sanctuary spell does end on you, since you have made an attack." This also agrees with my understanding of the rules: grapple is a special attack that involves an ability check instead of an attack roll. — Rubiksmoose ♦ 1 hour ago

@AncientSwordRage Okay, just didn't know if anyone else has heard from him and whether or not the other mods want to weather being down one. We've got a lot of issues we're dealing with here and it seems unfair for the other mods to shoulder that burden.

That comment was his first (publicly recorded) action on the site since March

@ThomasMarkov Before that are some gaps as well

1:24 PM
@ThomasMarkov thanks for spotting
@NautArch that's down to the mods

Yeah, Rubiks hasnt been "active" in any meaningful sense since October.

@AncientSwordRage Yes and no? Missing moderation affects the user base as well.

oh yeah, but they should make any decisions with the user base in mind

Rubiks hasnt done anything on meta since November.
Which was a single comment during the gszavae fiasco.

I've let the other RPG mods know

1:29 PM
Checking the activity section of all the moderators has made me realize how much of this site I don't see since in so often on mobile. Opening and maneuvering review queues is a pain, but there's a lot of stuff that doesn't update the active questions list
Not that I think I need to see all that stuff, but I'm reminded, once again, of the predominantly silent busywork and cleaning and upkeep that numerous users perform

Heh. My blocked tags are so extensive, I rarely see more than a tenth of the total posts on my "new questions" page.

@Someone_Evil would be the one to tell us if we really need an election, I think.
He's the one doing the vast majority of the moderator moderation

@ThomasMarkov like I said I've contacting all the mods here

@AncientSwordRage Thanks :( Just felt it was time to say something.

@NautArch yup no worries :)

1:35 PM
@ThomasMarkov I was wondering how much moderator action is visible under activity. Or if some of it is hidden away

@Medix2 a lot of it is AFAIK

@Medix2 I cant see close/delete votes, so there may be some stuff there we cant see.
Reviews, comments, and revisions all show up in activity that anyone can see.
close/reopen (unless done in the queue) and delete/undelete are not publicly visible.

@ThomasMarkov there's also feedback on flags etc, and sending messages to users

Yeah, just wasn't sure of there was mod actions like flags and messages and whatnot

@Medix2 all thats invisible

1:39 PM
Yup, makes sense!
@ThomasMarkov Well, I found delete votes I disagreed with, but I did get through the tool section XD

@AncientSwordRage IIRC it only counts moderation activity (as tracked on the admin page)

@Someone_Evil makes sense

@NautArch We haven't heard anything specific. IIRC there's a message in Dragons somewhere back explaining, but I'll suggest we don't need to link it
As for bulk moderation tasks, the workload isn't a problem, at least from my perspective. I'll bring up the topic with the others though

@Someone_Evil Okay, just worried that we felt a need for this number of moderators and we don't really have that number active or at least visibly active. Is that a sign that we don't need that many, or are some of the issues we're seeing between users/user 'factions' related to this?

1:55 PM
And yeah, most moderation actions aren't listed visible. If nothing else, by volume it's mostly comment deletions

Moderator actions exist in 3D space, confirmed

@NautArch The size of a mod team already gives some capacity for absence. As for the other half, I really hope not, but Imma avoid trying to pin anything particular down because I feel like that might be starting to assign blame over actually working towards a solution.

@Someone_Evil I don't think it's assigning blame and realizing help is needed isn't a bad thing.

@NautArch Generally, the mods get a lot of leash on things like that. SFF had Thaddeus Howze as an absentee mod for a few years before he was replaced. Physical Fitness had a mod that was completely absent for 4 years (but a beta site so...)
The biggest things are if the flags, meta etc are being handled by the current ones they won't be in a huge hurry to replace an elected mod.

@JohnP Ah, okay. I guess i'm looking at it from a user perspective and not a stack perspective. It seemed like the stack said we needed more mods, and then by having a mod not participate(?), we effectively don't have that number anymore - which returns us to an older problem.

2:09 PM
Rubiks was on meta 2 hours agi
And on main an hour ago, so he hasn't completely dropped off the earth. And, it may also be something that he communicated to the other mods that they may not be able to share.

@JohnP I think there's something to be said about the distinction between settling for good enough, and shooting for what is best. I don't think anyone would disagree that a mod inactive for 4 years is not the best we can do for a site.
Sure, maybe it's good enough for existence, but can we do better?

And do we need better?

@ThomasMarkov I agree. But as a beta site with low activity, it took me nine months of nagging pushing before they appointed me as a mod. Probably just to shut me up :D :D

@JohnP speaking of, is this on topic at fitness?

RPG would be a different animal, but the PTB just basically care if the site maintenance is being done.
@ThomasMarkov It is not. I missed that in the list, thank you.

2:15 PM
@JohnP We seem to have a pretty robust set of active users doing the usual curation activities.

And I've been a little absent as well. But, there have been some really good changes. Still maintaining an A average in my masters degree (two A- which dropped my GPA to a 3.87, grr), and I have a new job at $company in cybersecurity.
@ThomasMarkov And that's the thing. If you have a good crop of users, most of what the mods are doing is handling specific flags, curating meta and handling whatever disciplinary actions need to be done.
The fewer users you have doing mod type stuff, the more the mods have to be active. SFF, here, Arqade, etc all have very active user bases. Fitness, Med Sci, etc not so much.
@KorvinStarmast ^^ See above for masters/new job. :D

@JohnP Awesome, man!

@NautArch I'm really stoked, it's exactly what my masters degree is in. I've been communicating with a csec director since I interviewed last year, he recommended me for this gig. Took two weeks from applying to verbal offer, which for our company is absolute light speed.

@JohnP C-sec? You moving to Citadel station?
sorry, been playing waaaayyy too much mass effect.

And as a mostly raw n00b in csec, my job title proves titles mean nothing - "Senior Cybersecurity architect/engineer"

@NautArch I wish. I still have to get the remastered ME series, just been busy.

I'd only played ME2, so I bought the remastered series and am almost done with ME1. It's freaking great.

@NautArch The first ME1 was a bit painful, but I've played through from 1-3 about 4 times, making different choices along the way. I wish that ME had a system like Dragon Age, where you could set up your own conditions/choices on a website to load. That would be cool.
And even though I've played it several times, I still agonize over various decisions in the game.
You've played ME2, so this isn't a spoiler. I left the game on a 2 day pause on Virmire the last time, trying to decide which person to pick.

@JohnP I wish you had spoiled. I started Virmire before completing the geth incursions.
alas, I have a crew I really like. Wrex and Tali are a great combo with my biotic shephard.
And while I dislike the character Ashley, she's a force on the ground.

@NautArch Oh man...Ashley is the best if you're a male shep. Femshep, not so much.

2:35 PM
@JohnP I told her to act professional. We're a warship!

@NautArch I romanced her in my... 3rd? runthrough. If you go down those dialogue options, she presents much differently.

@JohnP Yeah, I didn't have an interest in romance.
Also, I'm not a great gamer, but i'm playing at insanity.

@NautArch I'm a horrible gamer, I play it on easy. I just like sniping stuff :D :D

@JohnP It's just as easy on insanity. It's weird.
I started on Normal and then kept moving it up.

@NautArch Really. I might have to give that a try then. When I get the remastered maybe. I've been sucked into Neverwinter lately.
Won't happen for at least a month though. I start my transition/training in earnest next week, I have World Championships and 6th degree testing end of the month.

Lets see...if I'm a spammer and I want to promo a site for "best body health tips", do I go to the fitness site? Nah, let's hit up the gamers...

@JohnP I would guess that's a bot that tries to leave links is seemingly legitimate posts to inflate the relevance of the site (make it linked from relevant sites)

@JohnP they know how much @ThomasMarkov lifts (FYI, more than a broom)
@NautArch but there're several RPGs associated

@AncientSwordRage Yah. I asked T.Sar which one they are playing.
I'm guessing it's Dark Heresy (isn't that the new one?)
But the description of 'wargame' made me think that it's referencing the OG wargame.

@NautArch not for a long time?
AFAIK the latest one collapsed after about 6 months?
Also, all previous rules set fell foul of the WoD problem, where each one extends what players can do, but that the previous rules book doesn't mention

@AncientSwordRage I'm clearly thinking of something else...didn't something just launch?

@NautArch wikipedia is not up to date

3:10 PM
@NautArch You're not thinking of Dark Alliance, are you?

> A new 40k expansion is here as Warzone Charadon from the Book of Rust is focused on a Death Guard assault on an Imperium Forge World. A new narrative expansion similar to Vigils is on the way.

Quite possibly. All I know is one of my employees plays the tabletop wargame and does amazing paint jobs.

@AncientSwordRage actually went back and deadlifted 425 on Sunday.

@ThomasMarkov much more than a broom then

I'm still salty no one got my room on a broom joke.
Jun 29 at 19:17, by NautArch
@GcL is there room on the broom for another?

Fun fact: Instead of lifting 425 lb weights, you can lift 1 lb weight 425 times
Or a 4250 lb weight 0.1 times

@MikeQ 0.1 times, how much does thinking about lifting that count towards the 0.1?

I dunno, I haven't tried lifting 4250 before, with or without telekinesis

@ThomasMarkov Nice! I am starting a new regime in 3 weeks, really want to drop abt 8 lbs and increase strength.

@JohnP what sort of program?

3:26 PM
@ThomasMarkov Going to be centered around HIIT and flexibility. I moved into a new, higher ranked ring and my speed and movement are subpar for it. I also need to shore up a few weak points, my triceps are more developed than my bi's, same for quad over hamstrings. Back has always been a ittle sus in development.
Probably something around 2x week of full body, 2x week HIIT/Interval/plyo, 2x week specific sparring/bag/cardio work and 1 day rest. Flexibility every day.

@KorvinStarmast only if they used their bonus action to do that. If they used the hand for something else, no cover.

Chicken should be heated to an internal temperature of 165 F (74 C) to effectively mitigate risk of salmonella infection. This announcement is brought to you by rpg.se's food safety team.

6:21 PM
@ThomasMarkov Those look like good additions

@Someone_Evil Yeah, I like it.

I'm not sure how much of a difference it's gonna make here. Pushing the question is usually good enough (we don't get many questions trapped waiting to be reopened AFAIK)
Though, the ability to edit a question without it (silently) getting pushed to the review queue is good.
I'd put a slight worry that new users might miss that option, and thus fail to get their question into the review queue, but I'm not sure you could ever fix that

@Someone_Evil We've got enough activity that it shouldn't be an issue, I think.

Your advisor's office. These are all things your advisor will be able to tell you. — Thomas Markov 2 mins ago
@Zachiel whatcha got for us

[gives Thomas a newspaper so they can roll it and bap their nose on their own]
@ThomasMarkov I keep doing this thing where I play premade adventures, players do what players do and go off chart and I think "what would this NPC do now?" - and my reply is always very close to "whatever it takes to have the adventure play roughly the same".
I feel like it's removing player agency upon the world, but it's the lazy thing to do: had I wanted to write my own adventure, I wouldn't have played a premade.

Are your players still having fun?

there's definitely a good main site question in there
We might have it covered well enough already, somewhere, I'll dig around a bit.

@Zachiel S_E has a good question in if the players are having fun. But what I tend to do here is a mix of nudging back 'on path' if this is part of an arc that is important, but also adjusting my path based on player decisions.

6:35 PM
Start by looking at these , see if something there seems relevant.

I'll add/remove NPC plans as they change the world so that there is a connection and that the players have an impact on the story.

There's a couple Q&As for you to peruse at your leisure

I knew we had some questions on this already. Glad you found them

@Someone_Evil it's not a problem with my players, it's a problem with "where the hell do I re-incorporate this NPC now? - Let me explain the scenario.

@Zachiel Do you need to reincorporate them?

6:39 PM
They have the McGuffin, of course I do.

@Zachiel Of course :P
Okay, so what did the players do that removed your plan for the NPC introduction?

I mean, I don't think I've ever run a prewritten adventure, so my assistance may be limited

This is a Pathfinder Adventure Path, so it is divided in books. End of book one, PCs are supposed to stop a thief who is stealing half of an ancient map. End of book two, the big bad with the other half of the map is not managing a crisis between differnt parts of her army because, without the complete map, ther's no way she can bring the treasure as a dowry for the big bad of book 6 (who is not interested in her anyway)

Did the players not stop the thief?

Players failed to stop the thief, who could have reached the fortress by now. How comes the big bad of book 2 still isn't managing the bickering amongst her army and passes her days crying in her room?
There was a TPK

6:43 PM
@Zachiel Are these new characters now?

Is the faction squabbling strictly due to lacking the full map?

If they don't get the full map, the adventure ends here.

Someone else stopped the thief, now those else need to be stopped/interacted with?

@Someone_Evil this would mean writing new encounters, My aim is to add the enemy from book one to sme otherwise not really hard encounter in book 2 - but players saw the fortress and spied upon it already, and I forgot to account for the change brought by the arrival of this thief.

@Zachiel The factions could just as easily be fighting over who gets the benefit of the map, or a potential usurper doesn't want the treasure to be used for something as mundane as a dowry from which someone else benefits
Or perhaps she isn't as excited about the marriage taking place and is pressured into agreeing to it and providing an awesome dowry in some way

6:47 PM
The thing I think I could do is to have the BBEG of book 6 still say no to a marriage evern if there is a dowry, and having the BBEG of book 2 still crying in her room despite having the whole map

My go-to solution for this kind of derailment is to shuffle factions around so that they all want the macguffin, and maybe even for the same purpose, but for different reasons

(There's a huge difference in castes between the two evil guys - I'm not going into too much detail to avoid spoilers)

@Zachiel These sound totally reasonable, as long as the fluff around them fits the theme of the campaign. Bonus points if the fluff can be linked to the PCs' actions

Mmmh so maybe she now has the map, but people are not on the same page about what to do with it and the whole army is stalling. "She wants to use the treasure for vain things and not for buying more weapons!" "This political marriage could be way better than an army" and she doesn't know how to solve the bickering (while still being heartbroken).

I like it

6:56 PM
I hope the NPCs involved have the wits to get to that conclusion, but parroting what they've been hearing from the boss might be good enough

Could they have their own perspectives on those motivations, or hear rumblings about them?
It doesn't all have to flow from the top if there are bickering groups in play

Some of the soldiers are really dumb, like mostly everyone from their fantasy races.

It could still work, maybe. "We can't buy nicer war axes because Ms. Boss wants to give a wedding present to... herself?"
Their lack of understanding could also drive the bickering

(Anyway, I still feel bad at not willing to put in more work and crafting more encounters as the plot mandates, playing all NPCs true to themselves)

Not gonna lie, caffeine is beautiful.
I can feel it hitting my brain.

I think I saw @LCooper (or some very similar cat) in front of the hospital this morning...

@Zachiel Unless the cat was being carried by a very bedraggled pajamas-wearing person who clearly hadn't had enough coffee to be dealing with an escape artist yet, I suspect it was a doppelganger!
And don't let this photo fool you, he's normally not this photogenic. As one of my friends put it, he usually looks like, and I quote, "a particularly deranged muppet"

XD

@AncientSwordRage That seems to be the second in a series, with this being the first

@Someone_Evil yeah I posted that here as well I think...?

@Someone_Evil will well found!

I'm not will, nor will I
But you can search links, so it's generally fairly straight forward
