7:30 PM
anybody know if there's a closed formula for sum(binom(a+i,b)*(c-i))?

chuck it into oeis and see

ngn
too many parameters

ah yea

Maybe
(a^2 binomial(a + n + 1, b) + a^2 (-binomial(a + 1, b)) - b^2 c binomial(a + n + 1, b) + b^2 c binomial(a + 1, b) + b^2 binomial(a + n + 1, b) + b^2 n binomial(a + n + 1, b) - b^2 binomial(a + 1, b) + a b c binomial(a + n + 1, b) + 2 a c binomial(a + n + 1, b) - b c binomial(a + n + 1, b) + 2 c binomial(a + n + 1, b) + b c n binomial(a + n + 1, b) + 2 c n binomial(a + n + 1, b) - a b c binomial(a + 1, b) - 2 a c binomial(a + 1, b) + b c binomial(a + 1, b) - 2 c binomial(a + 1, b) - b n^2 binomial(a + n + 1, b) - n^2 binomial(a + n + 1, b) - 2 a b binomial(a + n + 1, b) + a binomial(a

@ngn is i in a loop or something

ngn
7:31 PM
@Adám wat :)
@rak1507 yes

from what to what

@ngn W⍺ FTW ¯\_(⍨)_/¯

ngn
@rak1507 with the risk of divulging what i'm actually doing, here's a less simplified version: \sum_{i=1}^{a-1} \binom{n-a+i-1}{b} (a-i)

I feel like if you gave away what you were actually doing it might be easier to help (xy problems)

ngn
solving pe 756

7:38 PM
looks hard

ngn
143 people have already solved it
and the first one did in <20m, wow

yeah, pretty incredible looking at leaderboards
some people are really good at this sort of thing

so i ran ssh-keygen and added the public key to my github account; is it supposed to still ask for my username+password every time i push

ngn
@hyper-neutrino no. did you clone through https or ssh?

Did you give the key to git in any way? I'd imagine it has to know it exists somehow

7:46 PM
probably https

ngn
@hyper-neutrino git remote -v should tell you

https it seems. that must be the issue
ok nice recloning using ssh fixes that. thanks lol

ngn
@hyper-neutrino that or git remote set-url origin git@...

oh. yeah that was probably a better idea. i just rm -rf'd it and then cloned again. lol :P

Why on earth did you add -f lol
That seems like a bad idea

7:50 PM
good question :P

ngn
@RedwolfPrograms otherwise rm complains about readonly files

hm
i might've just deleted a 5000-line json file

lol

well guess it forces me to remake it properly now :p the layout of it was total garbage

I once was making a backup of a project I'd been working on for like three weeks. I would copy it over with cp -r (project) .. I made some changes, then really quickly went to save it again. I was going to remove the current backup to copy it back in, so without thinking I just deleted the cp and swapped it for rm. Deleted both my project and the backup.

7:57 PM
oh i deleted the config too
for my discord bot
this is inconvenient
i should probably move the config folder out of the repository rather than just gitignoring it
i have, on several occasions, accidentally pushed my token and had discord temporarily disable my bot, lol

God, I hate off-by-one errors ಠ_ಠ
They are easily my second most hated bug

what's your most hated

@rak1507 Off-by-one errors :P

lol

> The 2 most difficult things in programming are naming things, cache invalidation, and off-by-one errors

8:03 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Or is it caching?

- Somebody

@RedwolfPrograms Thankfully I rarely code anything that uses caching, so it generally isn't a problem I've run into :P

@hyper-neutrino doesn't rm -rf clear your computer

I was joking, since you returned the same reply when asked a different question :p
Oh no

ngn
@cairdcoinheringaahing if you've ever had to press ctrl-f5..

8:04 PM
I have said the words that summon Lyxal
@StackMeter With a --no-preserve-root / it sort of does
But all rm -rf does is remove a directory without confirmation prompts

@ngn Yeah, but that generally isn't a problem I have to deal with :P

Wait, what? Someone changed my parent user!

@RedwolfPrograms oh ok

I'm still mad at SE for giving out a hat for cheating at the winter bash game when I was the #1 player in terms of time spent and worked for quite a while to help report cheated scores

@RedwolfPrograms Didn't that hat also apply if you helped report cheaters?

8:12 PM
Well I sure didn't get it

That was a unique hat, in that it required Yaakov to "give" it to you, rather than setting off a trigger
My guess is that if you'd talked to Yaakov, you'd probably have gotten it

I think rewarding cheaters is...not great. I'd get it if the first few got it for figuring out some way of doing it, but chances are quite a few of them weren't trying to play around and have fun reverse engineering it, they were just cheating.

damn GS2 uses unprintables a lot

ngn
8:27 PM
@Adám if you specify a start and end value for the summation (sum_{start}^{end}) W alpha gives a simpler formula

Does anyone here have a sock with 1 rep?

Oh wait never mind
Actually wait meta never mind
What happens when you go to chat.stackexchange.com with it?

8:32 PM
Hang on, lemme just log in :P

(I can make my own sock to test if it's not a good time)

I think it just says "You need 20 reputation to participate in chat"

Oh :/
This is why I was wondering
> ...or their reputation is too low

Yeah, only mods can grant that

from the many times Adam has had to ping a mod here
he would know all too well

8:35 PM
I like the idea, but I doubt it'll ever get implemented. And, if it does, I can guarantee that it won't align that well with our usages of features :/

8:53 PM
@hyper-neutrino ⍨

9:03 PM
apparently self-answer accepts will not pin it to the top?
on this question if i sort by votes and keep reloading, the top two answers keep swapping places

@hyper-neutrino No, self-accepts still sort by default

interesting

> Can I accept my own self-answer?
Yes; if you've self-answered your own question, you can mark your answer as the accepted answer. There are some differences, though, that exist in order to ensure everyone gets a fair shot at answering:

Accepting your own answer won't award you any reputation.
The question must be at least 48 hours old before you can accept a self-answer.
Self-answers that are accepted won't be pinned to the top.
From here

ah. that makes sense
i feel like every other SO question i come across has a second answer with double the upvotes of the accepted answer with like 3 comments saying "this should be the accepted answer" lmao

Don't forget the "If my answer helped you, could you consider accepting it?" comments :/

9:10 PM
Double the upvotes? Those are rookie numbers
(×17 lol)

@RedwolfPrograms My approach: repeat the elements of the list so that 40% of the list is "bike", 30% "car", etc. then uniformly random choice :P

To reduce the impact of floating point errors you should do it a few thousand times and average it

But that takes more bytes

9:30 PM
A piece of ice just got stuck in my refrigerator's ice maker so I had to go shut off power to like half the house before I managed to get the right breaker so I could fix it :|
It would help if whoever previously owned the house I'm in had correctly labeled the breakers lol

1 hour later…
Ben
10:44 PM
Hello beautiful people!

hi

@Ben Welcome to TNB!

may I ask where you found it?

Dream 05ab1e is weird: there's a built-in to make it rain. Also, dream caird needs to stop deleting messages so much. Thank you that's all

I'm worried about your dreams @Lyxal

10:58 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing supposedly it takes a warehouse full of colourful liquids like liquid foam poured there by MIT students (who are at some sort of war with Harvard students - idk why) to make rain.
I'm Australian btw so my subconscious was really having fun last night

11:31 PM
3 messages moved to Trash

...I just now realized you can ctrl click to move multiple groups of messages

Dang when did the codenames room freeze on puzzling se?

44 days ago

@RedwolfPrograms .-.
lol
the menu literally tells you

I thought it meant shift click and ctrl click were the same

11:37 PM
ah

> Multiple messages can be selected via Ctrl-click and/or Shift-click

lol. one of the first things i did when i created a room a number of years ago was check how the move messages mechanism worked exactly
i expected it to work the way any sane file explorer does it
wait the codenames room froze? :c

I'm not going to admit I just learned you can ctrl click in file managers to do that

@cairdcoinheringaahing Interestingly, I thought Trash room was made by CGCC community to throw trash, never realise it was for whole SE chatrooms until I look into trash can

@RedwolfPrograms :D you learn something new every day

11:40 PM
@okie Yep :P There's also the Trashcan, which is a private mod room, for messages that should be fully trashed

To be fair on Chrome OS's file manager you can just click the little icon next to the file name like a check box :p

or rather, for messages that should always be visible to mods, but not to other users

oh lol
you can do that on windows with a specific setting i think (the one that makes single-click open a folder rather than double-click, iirc)
the Trashcan is pretty much for messages that we keep as a record but that are bad enough that normal users shouldn't be able to still go look at if they so desire
it also has the advantage that it doesn't send out invitations (except to other mods)

Can't mods see the full history of deleted messages?

yes, unless it's purged

11:42 PM
It should be called The Permanent Record :p

So what's the point of the Trashcan?

well, if a large conversation happened, it's inconvenient to click through the history manually of like 50 messages

Fair enough

of course we're not particularly reliant on the trashcan to track problematic users cuz a lot of messages don't get trashed cuz they're one-off messages that get flagged, so the most important thing about the trashcan is that it never is set to public/gallery

Maybe we should make a gallery trash room for TNB, since it's super active and not sending invites (except to ROs) would be nice
I can make it if y'all want

11:45 PM
I think we discussed this before and decided against it

that would make sense since we trash quite often here (ಠ_ಠ @ everyone)
but i don't see that great of a need

Making it now

Question: which is more useful for a "to binary" operator to return: a string or a list of bits?

What should I call it? Can't think of a good pun

list of bits IMO
actually depends. this is for a golflang i assume?

11:46 PM
@hyper-neutrino Of the last 50 "messages moved from" messages in Trash, 12 have been from TNB

@hyper-neutrino it's for Vyxal, so yes

@cairdcoinheringaahing does CURED beat that, or does TNB have the plurality

21 from a CGCC room
@hyper-neutrino CURED has 11

Is there a name for a function that ignores/discards its input?

pop, remove, nop, idk

11:48 PM
@RedwolfPrograms How about /dev/null?

Taken I think
By one of the unix/linux sites
"The Nilad"?

nilads don't take an argument though so...... idk?

I'll just call it TNB's Trash

trying to search for null and showing frozen/deleted rooms errors the chat page. thank you SE, very cool

11:49 PM
xD

How about The Twentieth Byte?

that's our mod chat's name

Seriously? :P

Why not the twenty-first byte, that's 21 bytes :p

and I'd rather not accidentally move trash into our mod chat for... reasons

11:51 PM
@hyper-neutrino your computer needs to get good

oof

Wow, SE does not like Ash

@RedwolfPrograms "Indonesian Gambling Spam"

I'd 100% name it that but it could be confusing :p

11:53 PM
But would it? :P

@RedwolfPrograms "Judgement Hall"
that way, all spam would have a bad time

Actually yeah Indonesian Gambling Spam is an awesome name :p

is the first room on that list the SF gallery trash or smth

that reminds me I should go do some metasmoke stuff

I'm only going to give TNB's room owners (plus mods) write access, since the point is that it's to prevent unnecessarily inviting people to rooms

11:55 PM
Is there a point to giving mods write access?

Good point

not really, lol. though if any of us get demodded we will no longer have access. though that'd be the least of my worries :p

If any of the mods step down as mod, I'm more than in support of making them an RO here :P

Made sure to add some trash to the room to start us off
