quack
@PabloGonzálezL @Rmano ^^

10:01 AM
@PauloCereda Is that one of those games where you have to move them in the right directions to get them to get the right stuff and go the right way? I've got one of those called Maze Machina (maze-machina.com) and I suck at it XD

@Plergux ooh

@PauloCereda I would recommend you get every single Arnold Rauers (tinytouchtales) game you can get your hands on. They are all so cool!

@Plergux ooh <3

@PauloCereda ENYO is similar (and also very cool) but I don't play that one cause I just don't get it XD

@Plergux :)

10:28 AM
@UlrikeFischer I just realized that the last luaotfload update isn't on CTAN. Did the CTAN team write to you about any issues?

10:46 AM
@MarcelKrüger No, I actually wanted to ask you about it too. I saw the "action" message and wondered yesterday if you really uploaded or if it was again a tag doing its own stuff.
@MarcelKrüger sorry I just saw a message, I must have missed it. I will forward it to you.
@MarcelKrüger wrong year ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Thanks, got it.
I'll do some forced rewriting on GitHub, so you might have to force pull master and the tag afterwards.

@MarcelKrüger what was the git command for this?

@PauloCereda important information for you in last line of this tex.stackexchange.com/a/579063/1090

@DavidCarlisle oh

@UlrikeFischer was the year out by 25 years?

10:58 AM
@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle no Marcel only wanted to repeat last year ...

@UlrikeFischer hardly even counts as an error

@DavidCarlisle but you know how picky ctan is (it wasn't Petra this time).

@UlrikeFischer does this work in an up to date miktex? I would guess it's a "update in user and admin" answer unless miktex missed a babel update somewhere? tex.stackexchange.com/q/579061/1090

@UlrikeFischer git fetch --force v3.17

11:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle I'm just updating miktex ...

@DavidCarlisle I found a typo in your answer: It should state TEXEDIT=nvim.

@MarcelKrüger no it is best to specify a real editor for the TEXEDIT variable

@MarcelKrüger ooh how do you like neovim?
@DavidCarlisle who needs to edit files? :)

@PauloCereda people who make errors. I have no personal experience.

@DavidCarlisle ooh

11:12 AM
@DavidCarlisle miktex seem to have missed the babel-ukrainian update. I will make a bug report.

@PauloCereda It combines Lua, vim and a decent built-in terminal, what's not to love?

@UlrikeFischer oops

@MarcelKrüger the Lua part ooh :)

11:32 AM
@PauloCereda I know you really want lisp not lua

@DavidCarlisle (ooh)

11:49 AM
@PauloCereda you can use Python as well :)

@Skillmon oh no ooh

12:24 PM
@PauloCereda that should have been ~~~~~~~~~o>

@UlrikeFischer ooh a snake

12:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle difficult to say without example, but do you think a new longtable could help: tex.stackexchange.com/q/579071/2388

@UlrikeFischer I left a comment there already i can not even guess what the problem is. Am I missing a clue in the question?
@UlrikeFischer oh I just noticed the over printed 11.
@UlrikeFischer if there is a floating figure and a one-page longtable on the same page then probably that is the issue, yes

2 hours later…

TIL that Jo is a regular Nordic first name!
@Plergux Try Fish Fillets NG then!

2:59 PM
And I just realized that if you get a drive-on-left car, the gear stick is on the wrong side! How can you change gears with your left hand?! Please guys @JosephWright @DavidCarlisle remind me that if I ever rent a car in the UK, I need to get an auto!

@yo' ???

yo'
@JosephWright see edit

@yo' Oh, you mean that the gear stick is in the correct place for cars that drive on the left :)

yo'
and do you have 1st gear on the left (far from your body) or on the right (towards you)?

@yo' Honestly, it's not that bad: you get used to having the gear on the 'wrong' side (I obviously get it when going to Europe, the other way around)

yo'
3:01 PM
@JosephWright no, no, no, you get it all wrong :D

@yo' Gear stick remains in the middle of the car: simple mechanical reasons
@yo' I guess to me it feels better the way we work: your right hand stays on the steering wheel when you change gear or put on the handbrake, which is in percentage terms better: stronger hand still steering

yo'
@JosephWright I understand that there are mecahnical, and also spatial reasons. Getting into your car over the shaft would be slightly impractical. (Not that I have never had to enter the car from the wrong side, or even over the backseats.)

And yes, I know that's not the reason we are round that way

yo'
@JosephWright I have it the other way around. I need much more precision on the shaft and on-board systems, whereas the steering wheel is pretty fine either hand.
I often drive with my left hand (outer in our case) only, resting in on the door rests. This leaves my right hand free for accompany my talking with gestures :-)

@yo' I think the data suggest it doesn't really matter: road safety is largely about system design (junctions, lighting, etc.), so it's just a question of learning to drive with the 'appropriate' hand

yo'
3:05 PM
Btw, this whole discussion is driven by me thinking of buying a new large car that would be fine for roadtrips. (Once the COVID thing gets better.) I got a nice offer for a cool car at half the price
@JosephWright yeah, sure :) The thing that seems to matter is the position of 1st: It feels natural to "grab" the gearstick towards you on the green light, not to push it away.
(I mean, half the price is still a shitload of money, but I planned to spend similar money on a new car in 2 years, and this offer is infinitely better!)

@yo' Not following the coaching manual ;)
@yo' Like I say, depends on what you are used to: gears remain the same way around (1st toward the left of the car)

yo'
@JosephWright oh definitely. I'll be probably soon going back to autoshool for a trailer DL, and I'm afraid the guys will get a heart attack from my driving habits!
@JosephWright yeah, I then realized that making two versions of the gearbox itself would be highly costly, and that you can't just reverse the stick and keep the box :-)

@yo' :) I'm lucky enough to be allowed to drive with a trailer without a separate test - I drove with my parent's caravan for many years
@yo' Exactly: they only change a minimum

@yo' as far as remember the main problem in first hours isn't the steering but to stay on the right side of the road.

@UlrikeFischer :)

yo'
3:13 PM
@UlrikeFischer yeah, but keeping on the wrong (left) side of the road and turning the roundabouts the wrong (clockwise) way is even more difficult if you constantly try to grab the stick that's not there :D

ooh it's better to get a bicycle
2

@yo' @UlrikeFischer is right: it's a lot easier to remember where the gears and handbrake are than to get the side of the road right. Roundabouts are usually fine, in my experience.
@PauloCereda Then you have to swap which leg you use at lights ;)

@JosephWright I will fall down regardless. :)

yo'
@JosephWright I can drive car+trailer as long as some very strange combination of rules is valid. I think it's car's max weight + trailer max weight <= 3.5t and trailer's actual weight <= 750 kg. And I think this new car might break this with some larger trailers. So better to get the DL.
Also the rules might be different in other countries, but the DL codes are the same, so I want to have B+BE

@yo' Ah, yes: an unbraked trailer (like for a tent or whatever)
@yo' Which I have :)

yo'
3:17 PM
@JosephWright well, then you're fine :)

@yo' Rules are the same EU wide, and at present UK rules have not deviated (give it time)

yo'
my trailer is unbraked, but my friend one borrowed me a trailer that itself is something 1500 max weight.
needless to say, my trailer's limit is 750 kg (630 kg payload) and my car's limit on unbraked trailers is 525 kg. How I managed to transport 800 kg worth of grit, who knows... :D
@JosephWright I wasn't sure, I thought that some part of the regulation is Czech only...

yo'
3:38 PM
@PauloCereda your image goes viral at Overleaf :) twitter.com/NormaliseSimon/status/1350464441436041217

4:03 PM
@yo' ooh! I'll check that out :D

@yo' it seems perfectly natural to me (and safer as most people are right handed and so steering with their good arm) although (for the first time my current car is auto, not that it makes any difference currently.

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yeah, as I said, to me, having the right hand operate all the little knobs while the left hand is steering (a single thing to do) seems safer... What led you to gettin an auto?

4:21 PM
@yo' I needed a new(ish) car in a hurry and this was basically same as my old one except 17 years newer (and auto)

yo'
@DavidCarlisle yeah, makes sense then ;) how much younger than the old one it is?

@yo' old one was 2001 new one 2017 (both about 18 months old when I got them) VW Passat

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Passat is not a bad car. Btw, if I made the deal on Monday on my new car, it'll be the first VW I'll regularly drive

We were at Wolfsburg last October. They have quite a famous cook on the premises of the VW plant. @yo @DavidCarlisle

@UlrikeFischer we have had 2 polos and 3 passats, probably explains why I am so fluent in German

@DavidCarlisle we only speak bavarian ;-)

5:06 PM
@UlrikeFischer Diese Dialekte sind nichts für mich, ich spreche nur Hochdeutsch

5:46 PM
@yo' -- I did get an automatic. I also got a rental with a great big "L" label on the rear. That assured me that local drivers would stay away from me, and it worked. (L = learner.) However, there's nothing special that can be done about the occasional one-lane roads in the sticks, er, the more rural areas. Fortunately, traffic didn't seem to be too heavy there.
@yo' -- Going clockwise on roundabouts isn't any easier on a motor scooter, as my left-handed husband discovered in Bermuda.

@PauloCereda Jajjajja :)

6:20 PM
@JosephWright iirc, I asked about plans to add a verbatim environment argument to xparse some time in the past. Is there any news regarding this I might've missed?

7:15 PM
Hi everyone, Does anybody know about any LaTeX/ConTeXt "Rosetta Stone" for those things doable roughly the same way with both? E.g. \setvalue and \getvalue (ConTeXt) / \@namedef and \@nameuse (LaTeX) or \gobbleoneargument (ConTeXt) / \@gobble (LaTeX).
Maybe a "pure" LaTeX cheatsheet? I don't ask for (LaTeX) sources as abbreviations tend to be a little bit weird. :D

2 hours later…
9:00 PM
@UlrikeFischer Could you check if revtex4 version 2020/09/30 v4.0a is in miktex? There is a user who says they installed miktex today but got 2001/08/03 v4.0, so I'm wondering if there might be a packaging problem

@samcarter_says_quack I think it's because revtex4 is marked obsolete on CTAN, and MiKTeX (if I recall correctly) doesn't install that

@samcarter_says_quack miktex doesn't install revtex4-0, it is obsolete. If they have it it must be some leftover.

@UlrikeFischer so slow

@PhelypeOleinik but thorough - I checked ;-)

@PhelypeOleinik @UlrikeFischer Thanks for these lightning fast replies :)

9:06 PM
@UlrikeFischer I just guessed, so you're forgiven :)
@samcarter_says_quack They can get it from ctan.org/pkg/revtex4-0, but it's recommended to use revtex4-2 instead
@samcarter_says_quack From what I saw there aren't too many differences between each version, so they should be fine most of the time

@PhelypeOleinik I gave them a link to your messages. Thanks a lot!

@samcarter_says_quack You're welcome :)

9:20 PM
@JosephWright there are two `\int_new:N \l__color_backend_stack_int
` in the xetex driver. Which one should I delete?

9:37 PM
@JosephWright, @StefanKottwitz I was the target of (a few, meaning 5) serial upvotes just now (I think because of this answer: tex.stackexchange.com/a/579133/117050). I kind of remember that this wasn't endorsed on the site, so I figured I should let you know.

@UlrikeFischer Didnb't I fix that?

@JosephWright you change something global/local but now there are two \int_new

@UlrikeFischer Oh, yes: delete the first one (next to the global)

@JosephWright done.

@UlrikeFischer Cool

9:53 PM
@JosephWright I'm just testing the destinations things. I think I will change the box command to \pdf_destination:nnnn {name}{width} ... and define it so that it is always a 0-size-box.

@UlrikeFischer OK, sounds good

@JosephWright btw: I think that one need the guard the "color.opa" stuff against a non-active/not-existing pdfmanagement code.
@JosephWright damn now I get
Undefined control sequence.
<argument> \l__color_backend_stack_int

10:36 PM
@JosephWright I moved the code, but perhaps you should check if this looks ok.

11:15 PM
@Skillmon A few usually happen when interested users look at a profile and the answer list there. No worries. If a threshold is hit, some may be reverted automatically, also no worries. Unintentional stuff shouldn't worry anybody.

I'm currently trying to clone/checkout the pdftex SVN repo (tug.org/svn/pdftex) and fail miserably. Am I just incompotent or does it fail for other people too? (The error is that both "git svn clone" and "svn checkout" normalize the URL to remove the final slash, which redirects to the version with the slash, only to get normalized again...)

11:36 PM
@MarcelKrüger I also get the normalisation loop with svn checkout
@MarcelKrüger Hm..., I think that's just the web interface, so svn doesn't know how to checkout that (I'm guessing). Try svn checkout 'svn://tug.org/pdftex'

@PhelypeOleinik Thanks, that works!
