12:06 AM
hey mick! :)

Hello :D

i am currently pressing the "random" button on wiktionary over and over

Found any good words?

"good"?
well, there are the fairly obvious entries such as
Noun: DMZ hosts
  1. plural of DMZ host...
like that's obvious
and the super long words like
Noun: phosphindolizines
  1. plural of phosphindolizine...
@GarethMcCaughan mostly they are ... well, random
hey oalt!

I expect that if one knows enough chemistry it's obvious what a phosphindolizine is and no dictionary is needed to predict that that's what they would be called. (I do not know enough chemistry.)

12:20 AM
Ey

@GarethMcCaughan it is "a heterocycle formally derived from indolizine by replacing the nitrogen atom with phosphorus" but i don't know what that means either

Yep, seems like it's modification of "indolizine" where a nitrogen atom was replaced by a phosphorus atom. So they just put "phosph-" as a prefix.
sniped me

@bobble well that's just boring imo
then again, so are most chemical names

cries in chemistry minor

@Sciborg there, there

12:26 AM
I absolutely loved both my high school chemistry classes, and my sister thinks I'm weird because of that.

It's beautiful and it made me giggle.

they're ready to attack ready to help you solve puzzles

speaking of solving puzzles, are there updates from the Statue Park front?

I've taken a break from them for a bit to work on the Mega-Plugin :p

also, 84 pages of humor for you
(wikipedia turned into ridiculousness via google translate)

Google Translate humor is my favorite

yep

12:31 AM
Have you seen those YouTube videos of songs butchered by Google Translate?
They're comedy gold

you mean things like this?

yes

yep, i love that channel

"I'm not in love with my legssssss"

"you shine like salt and this is me"

12:34 AM
There are mods for games that turn the dialogue and text into Google Translated versions, and it's also amazing

A: Tubariphobia - The fear of pickles

cyberpotatoThe crux of this problem, as given in Hint 2, is a Vigenère cipher. To apply a Vigenère cipher, we need three things: the alphabet, the ciphertext, and the key. The easiest to figure out is the alphabet. The note tells us that The base range isn't the standard, but it's still standard. We also ...

Yup, we saw the solve :D
"imgur" as the ciphertext is brilliant

@Sciborg ~don't lean on the table~
one of my fave lines from the above 84 pages of humor:
"The Prognosis team looks at the painting museum and tells Abel to go to the grave and grab a brush and talk to the actors."

My tics have subsided (mostly) again, after raising the dose of my meds. Yay!

Q: Mensa sample question - squares with shaded and unshaded parts

pilotjoker999I found some sample Mensa IQ test questions at the Mensa Singapore website(https://www.mensa.org.sg/answers/). There were 8 questions inside it. I managed to answer most of them without too much problem, however, I could not answer the last one. This is the question: I could not figure out the p...

Hooray, more IQ test questions :p

at least they made the title decent
of note: that user has exclusively asked and answered IQ test questions
I guess that's what they're interested in? * shrug *

They sent me an email about it, for some reason

wait what?

I have an extraneous email address on my profile in case anybody needs to email me, and they emailed me randomly

1:49 AM
what did the email say?

I think I deleted it, let me see if i can find it
was basically just "here are some IQ questions you can try"
I was just as baffled as you are

I hope you didn't click on any of the links

no
I was just confused, basically

user161005Who am I? (All answers that satisfy this riddle are valid)

^ wait what
@Sciborg oh boy, I received that too within hours of me showing my brand new puzzling email on my profile
@bobble I don't think the links are unsafe. They are PDFs of IQ tests. However, what I'm worried about are the registration steps -- it says you need to pay as part of the registration and also asks for personal information. I don't want to do any of that.
In any case, I never replied to the email either mwahaha

3:18 AM
@oAlt Glad it wasn't just me :p it was a very weird thing to receive in my inbox.
I mean, you guys are totally free to email me anytime, but please not with shady links lol

@Sciborg Not bad. I have another mock trial skirmish tomorrow
Bit stressed :(

@merrybot there are sites that already let you input phrases and feed them through Translate to make nonsense, I think
@PrinceNorthLæraðr that sucks :(

@Sciborg (self-)facepalm
in that case, forget i said anything

@Sciborg Well, I'm stressed out about math, like always
I just realized I basically have only three (?) or four more weeks of school left
And my grade is horrendous

eek
Any chance you can completely rock the final?

Maybe, I don't know
I know I have at least one more quiz coming up next Friday, and possibly another
I hope she allows retakes this year

3:25 AM
I'm not sure how your teacher grades, maybe if you do some retakes it will help the grade?

Which is to say, one of the thread knots broke and I had to resew her
But she's okay now! just recovering

ah, good

Poofy is a brave crown, she will be fine
The doctors believe that the cause of the stitch injury was excessive hugging

how about your *clears throat* mega-giga-ultra plugin?

The Mega-Giga-Ultra-Super Plugin, you mean

it's the Law

how much have you added to it?
also how the hell does that thing even work?

Someone upvoted this "riddle"
> (All answers that satisfy this riddle are valid)
Yeah, that's not how we work here

that is definitely not how it works

@bobble "That puzzle was criticized for having too many possible answers, several of which were just as good as your intended one" It was NOT, don't make things up, please. Quote: "I downvoted, because lawyering and loophole finding aren't fun if you have to find a specific, purposely included loophole" — user161005 24 secs ago
UGHH
having a specific intended loophole, when there are MULTIPLE loopholes, is the SAME THING as having too many possible answers

??????? i'm so confused by their argument
they're agreeing with you but they don't seem to realize it

can you write counter-comment? or should we just not write any more counter-comments?

just leave it be at this point
You don't need any harassment over this

4:30 AM
I don't want to leave their comment as the "last word". UGH. But I'm doubting that they'll listen to reason.

If they won't see your point of view then there's no point engaging further, unfortunately.

> don't make things up, please
UGH UGH UGH
okay, disconnecting now

If they get toxic a mod will step in

okay, um, I don't want to quote them any more. see latest comment for more Bad Arguments.

yeah let's just let it be

4:33 AM
The downvotes will speak for themselves at this point.

It's probably not worth flagging the comments. They're wrong, not mean. Right? I'm not unbiased here.

I don't think they are being abusive or rude or anything, they are just expressing an opinion we disagree with.

"don't make things up" sounds accusatory to me
which is not very nice
but your call

That' s fair, that is accusatory and not nice, but they're not outright attacking I guess. I'm hesitant to say it goes over the line

I've taken worse and not flagged. And bringing it up the the chat is sorta-flagging already, since Deus will see it. So, no flagging. For now. If they post more comments, and those are worse, then Flag Button will be pressed.

4:37 AM
That's fair. If they start to attack you we will ping Deus
I'm never sure where the "rude and abusive" line gets crossed sometimes, because sometimes people leave pointed comments when they feel disagreed with but the comments themselves aren't aggressive or targeting one user. I think the targeting and/or attacking one specific user is the line for me

"rude and abusive" is inherently subjective, and at the end of the day it'll be a moderator's call. (unless enough people flag the same comment, but then that normally means it's completely terrible)

It's easier in real life when you can hear the tone more clearly
Comments and chat messages are tricky

unless you're me and are always told you interpret tone wrong
(and also that you have the wrong tone)

I had to kinda train myself to identify tone of voice and get jokes, used to be pretty bad at it as a kid. Like it would take me about twenty minutes to understand a joke :p

I can usually get text-based jokes, but anything that requires interpreting body language or tone goes over my head.

4:45 AM
People are hard
I never struggled with body language/facial expressions overly much, it was just the words and parsing things that got me sometimes. But I imagine body language can be a nightmare if you're not sure how somebody is feeling and can't read their body to know

I both can't read body language (after lots and lots of trying) and have gotten berated for not trying enough to understand body language. Fun!

oof

5:07 AM
@Sciborg oh hey, i also got that email

That makes three of us, apparently

Nice!

@bobble you're right, but it seems like given previous discussions they won't listen to reason - stay away from the question for the sake of your own sanity

digression: Deus, are you available for Fillomino help?

5:54 AM
@bobble sure!

Ooh, that one looks fun

I think the snake has to go through the left-hand side, if that matters
(also this has to be quick because I'm leaving soon)

does it? if it does then that gives you some more snake cells (but i'm not convinced of that)

The only argument I have is uniqueness (there are a bunch of ways to fill the left side if the snake doesn't go through). But that's unsatisfying

5:58 AM
this seems underspecified to me

It definitely can't go through the right side
so it's left or middle

yeah

and the middle 3-omino will determine which side the snake goes through
(any way it goes blocks off one path)

ah i see
you mistranscribed a clue
R3C7 is a 6, not a 5

I did?
Ah, that makes more sense
hehe
okay, this seems much more solvable now

HTM
@Avi I would say because the "about" separates "memory" and "candy," "ends off" can modify "candy" or "memory about candy," but not both. You'd have to add another deletion indicator to make the wordplay you want work

@Avi Nor even to Uranus.

ah yes, that one unfortunately named planet

I don't know
Like, yes, it improves the post but the user repeated just makes really really small, minor edits

Yeah, each individual edit is fine. But spamming a bunch of tiny pedantic grammar edits for extra +2s feels very wrong to me.

Yeah, exactly

10:33 PM
I approved it

i'd reject if it doesn't make significant improvements

But I've rejected it a couple by them

Is fixing ~3 small grammar issues too minor?

@Deusovi I didn't know how "significant" it felt. I don't think I'll approve more fo them though. It just seems like a ploy to get easy rep
@bobble Well... I rejected two of them because even those felt too superfluous. But Idk, I guess it was a significant enough grammar error?
Giving the benefit of the doubt right now, but if it happens again, I don't think I'll approve it

i don't think grammar errors like that are significant enough to be editworthy

@Deusovi Well, the only thing was like because of the reject reason for "no improvement whatsoever" was like "even if it improves the post a little or makes it easier to read" but I guess there is the "superfluous" aspect of it

10:38 PM
@JohnDvorak Then what's defeat?

short for defeature, or remove from a prominent spot

@Deusovi "This edit does not make the post even a little bit easier to read, easier to find, more accurate or more accessible. Changes are either completely superfluous or actively harm readability." I didn't really know what the line is between superfluous and "even a little bit easier to read/more accurate"

yeah, i'd say it's okay to call it "superfluous" if it technically improves grammar by a minor amount, but doesn't actually make the post easier to read?

I guess so? I think one or two small grammar errors to fix were fine, but this is becoming a habit, which is kind of getting annoying

agreed.

Q: Find the last name of a scientific

davidivadfulIn a competition we need to find the last name of a scientific which is hidden in this PDF: https://fciencias.ugr.es/images/stories/documentos/sanAlberto/basesElEnigma2020.pdf Any idea? I know it has 8 letters

Uh
What do they mean by a "scientific"

I'm not sure what to close it for
"On-going competition" or just straight up not a puzzle?

> I’m voting to close this question because it is from an ongoing competition and requires looking into an external PDF - which doesn't appear to be in English.
is what I have drafted

Oh already vtced

And even if it were a "scientist" I doubt there's going to be a scientist with an 8-letter mononym
not sure about the ongoing competition one (OP doesn't seem to be a native speaker and could have meant "In a competition, we needed...") but I agree with the other points

official policy for on-going competitions is to lock the puzzle until after the competition is over. I think that requires mod intervention, right?
