7:06 PM
it's not a numeral prefix - the word "digit" originally means "finger/thumb/toe/etc"
and then bit and trit came from portmanteauing it with the prefixes

ah right

Avi
Thus Deus hath spake pon wee mortels

what does that mean
"spake"? "pon"?

Avi
Thus Deusovi has spoken upon wee mortals
probably with some grammatical mistakes

hey North!

7:19 PM
@matt Heya

Other people came to my defense, though, which was nice.

Avi
Uhhhhh
I think that person misunderstood total impartiality as an attack ;(

Looking at that quote I thought bobble dropped some heavy insults on them -> was disappointed

Avi
23 hours ago, by bobble
I just want to be your frieeeend

7:22 PM
??

quite sorry to disappoint :P

Avi
somehow I don't think bobble would do something like that

Okay, it sounded a little harsh, but an expected response to "But why though"

what is going on here, i am confuzzled

Discussing a comment

7:23 PM
I remember that comment

i do not

@Gabbie -- I assure you, nobody is trying to hurt you. Bobble is simply pointing out that this is not the correct StackExchange website for these types of questions, and Bubbler brings up a good point too. It's okay to make mistakes when you're new! Just make sure you act on them and learn from them! Welcome to StackExchange! :):) — Voldemort's Wrath yesterday
Wait that's mine
hang on

Q: How can you classify quadrilaterals?

GabbiePlease help! This is an IXL activity I need help with because I want to improve my Math skills. Which words describe this shape? Choose all that apply.

Avi
To be fair

lol indeed

Avi
7:24 PM
I'm pretty sure that person is like 6 years old

Avi
good on them for figuring out how to create a stackexchange account

I do think they are waaay too young for stack exchange
I did IXL in elementary school

Avi
not literally 6, but figuratively

Well, they reponded with:
Thank you Voldermort's Wrath; now I feel welcome. I just felt that Bobble was a little too harsh, but I guess that's okay (?)...thank you very much! :) — Gabbie 44 mins ago

7:25 PM
yes also they misspelled @Voldemort'sWrath

Avi
Moldymort

I just say "Voldy"

lol
voldy is a good nickname

Avi
tbh
the little bobbles are like yellow molds growing all over the profile pic

Lol
Actually, these bobblies are feeding extra power to me. They might be defective, bobble

7:27 PM
You think.

Uh, oh
Well then I can just...
bombarda
See? explosion

You can't ever truly destroy a bobblie

Yeah my intention was not to do that

Avi
they're like horcruxes

just to show how incredibly huge my power is
btw you can destroy horcruxes

Avi
7:28 PM
not with bombarda

Well, if you do it hard enough

Avi
but they're more invincible than horcruxes

Yes
Again, not my intention

Avi
Moldymort will soon become Moldymold

Or just voldy
voldy is a cute name tbh

Avi
7:30 PM
Too bad they named him Tom.

tommy is still cute
lol
im losing brain cells
k bye bye
i have homework D:

Avi
In Danish, “Romeo G. Detlev, Jr.” rearranges to “Jeg Er Voldemort,” or “I Am Voldemort.” In Spanish, “Tom Sorvolo Ryddle” becomes “Soy Lord Voldemort,” and German speakers have “Tom Vorlost Riddle,” which morphs into “Ist Lord Voldemort,” like the original English version. If you’re a French reader, our young wizard becomes “Tom Elvis Jedusor,” which then turns into “Je Suis Voldemort.”

wow
how did you...?

Avi
google

@Avi "like the original English version": except that it's in the third person instead of the first

Avi
7:45 PM
Possibly - I have no idea what that translator was thinking
also, I didn't write that bit of text

wonder what klingon would end up being

Avi
but, I'm not quite sure that the rest of that article was either relevant or appropriate for this chat

@Avi PLAGIARISM!!!

I knew the Elvis thing but not the others

Avi
@msh210 with no citation
alright

7:47 PM
Only pathetic plagiarists cite.

Avi
I'm going to attempt making a bermuda rectangle again :( hopefully I don't get defeated

"good artists borrow; great artists steal" -- jafe, 2020

Avi
scam artists...
... borrow but never return

@Avi what's a bermuda rectangle?

Avi
@matt inescapable, that's what it is
and filled with sharks

7:50 PM
If you seek beneath these floors
A treasure that was never yours
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there

@bobble nice poem! :)
or did you not write it?

Avi
JK Rowling wrote it

It's at the front of Gringotts

Gringotts
cool

Avi
It's a really good poem though

7:51 PM
There's another verse but it's not relevant here
I have the first two Sorting Hat Songs, the Hogwarts School Song, and all of the half-decent short poems in the series memorized.

wow

my little sister has every prophecy from percy jackson (and the heroes of olympus) memorized

I have a life, why are you asking? :)

heh

@Mithical I have the Big 3 one memorized but none of the others

7:54 PM
heh, I only memorized the second big one

Avi
Haha spoilers - Percy Jackson is waterboi

i used to have 88 digits of pi memorized

Avi
3.2
ez

3.1415926

3.141592653589793238462643382379502884 is all i got now

Avi
7:55 PM
3.14159265358979 is all I usually remember
but I don't really care lol

(I've gone on before about why Riordan is better than Rowling so I'll just link that and not get into it too much here)

pi ~ 3

Avi
I just do that in case my calculator doesn't have a PI button and I need to multiply something

@Avi I only remember 3.1415926
one of my cousins supposedly memorized 100 digits but until I hear it for myself I'm holding out doubt

hm
and then there's me, who for no reason at all made an html ipa chart in 3 days

7:58 PM
(but I don't put it past her, she's... freakily multitalented)

Avi
how so
and to what degree

she's a born actress and singer, for one; she taught herself how to play piano; one of the most intelligent people I know
she draws extremely well

Avi
oof

I'm envious if I had to be honest

Avi
drawing OP

8:00 PM
I can put words together. That's about it

(nice article, Mith!)

Avi
I can code + make random puzzles + piano + do math + other random things. That's about it

(thanks)

@Avi are they good random puzzles?

Avi
Can't write, draw, or talk to other people
@bobble Generally so
And not repeats, either
I can technically write but I condense condense condense
until my 1 page becomes 1/10th of a page

8:03 PM
@Avi Nobody ever accused me of being laconic...

Avi
I'm still salty about this one time I wrote a 3 page story and caught a grammar error in it 5 years later
Haven't written any stories since :/

@bobble The only poem from the books that I know by heart is Peeves's on Voldemort's death. And I'm not even sure I know that one correctly.

Avi
We did it
We bashed them

*bashed

Avi
Wee Potter's the one
@bobble thanks
And Voldy's gone Moldy
So now let's have fun!

Avi
8:35 PM
so, besides sharks
what other fun stuff might you expect to see inside a bermuda triangle/rectangle?

dragons
with top hats
because.

Avi
dragons with top hats, sharks, and?

the dragon thing was my only idea

yikes, first chain puzzle's live!

Let's see how this goes! :)

Q: What is the Name of this Toggling Puzzle?

Robin AndrewsI came across an interesting toggling puzzle while looking through a code repository on GitHub. I want to find out more about it and see if there is any info on how to solve it, how to ensure solvability etc., but I can't seem to find any references to it online. The closest I can find is a puzzl...

Anyone want to collab for the puzzle, we can meet in the Chain Puzzle room

I'm exploring an idea

Hello :D looks like someone solved the C4 while I was gone

Avi
Connect Four, Battleship, Monopoly, Blokus, Chess (and a bunch of others that I don't know) w.r.t. Tabletop games

They're currently meeting in the Chain Puzzle room

9:09 PM
We have a Chain Puzzle room? Nifty

@Sciborg, how much work do you have on a scale of manageable to dying?

@bobble Yesterday I was dying but today is much more manageable, I basically am done for the day which is nice

yay!

:D
I'm reading the chat logs and lol, guess you're "a little too harsh" for not wanting to help user with what is obviously their math homework on a puzzling website. How dare you

Avi
turns a-boat

Q: 1000 gold coins to share with the king

OrayYou are the knight of a great kingdom in a unknown world. Your king sent you to a dungeon and you killed the dragon and got 1000 gold coins from the dragon layer. Normally, you are supposed to give all gold coins to the kingdom but the King says; Congratulations, you collected $1000$ gold with y...

9:31 PM
note to self: the anagrams scare people away

BOO!

that- no
from my math homework:
> 15. Atrough is 12 feet
that is the entire question
i'm like "what tf do i do with that?"

Avi
Answer: Apeak is 12 feet

thank you for that

Avi
but yeah idk that sounds like an incomplete question - you may want to shoot your teacher an email or something

9:35 PM
don't shoot your teacher. that's illegal.

Avi
. that's illegal

so periods full stops are illegal now?

Avi
get shot . that's illegal ggg
specifically, I have shot you the string ". that's illegal"

??
will be back

Avi
Or, in other words, a sentence-ending punctuation mark that is illegal

9:38 PM
Are you restricting this only to English: Because things work differently in other languages:

Avi
Yes, I am restricting this only to English: Other languages can retain their mechanics:
this is a Bermuda Rectangle (solved)
this is a Bermuda Rectangle (unsolved)
deduce the ruleset, and then you can make your own to post on PSE, I suppose

1. A single loop (which may cross over itself) must go through every colored square
haven't figured out any other rules

@matt Don't you have a pair of digits transposed there?

10:02 PM
@GarethMcCaughan oop, yes, thanks :)
@Avi ok how does that work

Avi
22 mins ago, by Avi
deduce the ruleset, and then you can make your own to post on PSE, I suppose

at the moment it's just "draw a loop through all the colored squares"
can't think of any others
but there are several unique solutions with that rule

Avi
fineeeeeeeeeee
Grandpa told you that there were sharks and dragons with top hats inside the Bermuda Rectangle. Ever the curious one, you decided to see for yourself. Due to the bizarre nature of the Bermuda Rectangle, you can only survive if you find a safe path. The rules are the following:
1. You start and end on the same square.
2. You can only turn when you see (are on the same square as) a shark (blue) or dragon (purple).
3. Once you're in a shark- or dragon-infested region, you will be chased down! You must visit every square within a colored region to escape.

where do the top hats come in?

Avi
the dragons have top hats
curious indeed

10:13 PM
i read it as "(sharks and dragons) with top hats"
i.e. they both have top hats

so far, no actual distinction between the sharks and the dragons

Avi
Correct - I wouldn't want to be eaten by either of them.

sings "When you're a Dragon, you're a Dragon all the way ..."

~singing random words~

(not random)

10:15 PM
rtgfyg6t5dgy6

Avi
for the record - I think this puzzle type is full of possibilities
especially if someone can figure out what the dragons are doing :(
perhaps a tea-time so rudely interrupted by our protagonist

speaking of tea, my cup is empty ... accio
there we go

Avi
alright, enjoy

sips

Avi
I'm off because exhausted from setting and deducing that one :(

10:22 PM
aight, bye :)
meanwhile, my balanced elevenary is going well

10:41 PM
@bobble try telling the <expletive><expletive> to shut the <expletive> up

11:23 PM
I just tutored calculus for 80 minutes. dear goodness, my brain hurts.

Will the cryptic-clues tag ever stop being misused? I understand the reason for the repeated mistagging... Unfortunately we can't change the name of it :)

Two ideas: move the "don't use this for enigmatic-puzzles" warning to the front of the tag and all-caps it, and/or change it to "cryptic-crossword-clues"

Q: Where does my friend lives 2

00xxqhxx00One of my friend, Anne, is staying in London. She had told me which street is she in but to my understanding, there are a huge number of houses living in the same street. Fortunately, every house in this street has a colour and neither two shares the same colour. She told me that: 3665?66, 13×r+1...

Second one might lead some to think it has to be a crossword. Although I suspect if you know what it means that misunderstanding might not even happen
(being a crossword, that is)

What do you think of the "move-the-warning" idea?

11:33 PM
Sounds good IMO. But I suspect most people who mistag don't read the tag deacription at all

I know that some other SEs have gotten special warnings that pop up when you use certain tags. Maybe try for that?

@bobble ahh

example of getting a specific-tag warning

well hello there user872797
hey wait a minute ... your meta profile says your username is ... Anonymus25 2.0! welcome back!

Isn't getting around a deletion by creating a new account not allowed?

11:46 PM
huh...
hey @avi!

Avi
hi

it seems anonymus25 is back

Avi
is there anything wrong with that?

2 mins ago, by bobble
Isn't getting around a deletion by creating a new account not allowed?

Avi
Possibly not. Did they do something horribly wrong that I'm not aware of?

11:50 PM
Be < 13 years old.

Avi
ToS?
ah, ToS

what exactly did you fix, deus?

I think he fixed their account, lol

ah yes
this link still works though
on wait nvm the account still exists both in meta and on puzzling

11:55 PM
The puzzling link didn't work last time I checked
Now it does

oh boy it's time for some whack-a-mole

whack-a-mole with a mod hammer?
