Q: You got anything original to say?

AIQI am wondering what is expected of someone who feels that a contributor has added an answer that is very similar to at least one other answer in the same post. @AIQ Nice!
@AIQ It's on the same latitude as Noyabrsk, my hometown
But in Noyabrsk we do have trees, although they are not very powerful
Noyabrsk in the summer of 2015
In 1992 and 1993 I used to go jogging to that lake and back
My home can almost be seen along the left border of the frame

@CowperKettle I like the Russian architecture, I was to Armenia for couple of days in 2017 and the city's buildings and streets were pretty much similar to the Russian counterparts. I really enjoyed the time I spent there. I went there in July and the weather was just astonishingly nice. I didn't stay much there, so I can't judge the every-day life there, but it was great.
@CowperKettle 0:-)
@AIQ Have you been to Alaska, it seems to be a very interesting place to live with a lot of natural wonders!

4:56 PM
@Cardinal Yes, the Soviet principles of city planning were very good.
Sadly, in the recent decades cash overrules them, and many buildings are built in place of parks.
Starting from 1960 all cities were built according to a general plan which was quite scientific, to avoid school overcrowding, to provide greenery and enough space for roads.
In the southern republics buldings were designed to withstand heat and provide more shade. I noticed that when I visited Uzbekistan as a child.
The people in Uzbekistan were extremely poor, but the city's layout was great.
Even those who are against the Soviet rule admit that city planning was a strong side of it.

@CowperKettle Oh ... A Youtuber said that it was the latitude that was the reason for Nunavut not having trees ... but then I wonder what is the actual reason. Maybe permafrost ...
@Cardinal Not yet ... I have some places in mind I would like to go see in the US ... Alaska is one of them ...

@AIQ YEs, I'm also curious.
Trees seems to be quite abundant in Noyabrs, although when I moved to Yekaterinburg, Noyabrsk remembered almost as tundra in comparison. In the Urals, there is much more greenery. All kinds of bushes and trees.

the sewer lines are all above the ground

There was perfmafrost in Noyabrsk too. All houses are built on numerous concrete piles.
All my childhood there was a constant noise of pile-driving machines.

In Nunavut, only a few houses have water supply through pipes
Most houses especially in small communities get water delivered everyday by water trucks
They all have a water treatment plant outside their house

In Noyabrsk, water was supplied underground through huge pipes. I think it was not very energy efficient. Near our house there was a distribution bunker connecting several pipes, and it was constantly warm.

No, it did not freeze.
Even though the temperatures fall slightly below minus 40 C for a week in January.
A couple of times the central power station broke down, and we were alerted that the whole town might be urgently evacuated, because it was in the winter.
But somehow they managed to fix it

Oh lord!
@ColleenV Hi, yesterday J.R. commented on one of the answers to my meta post. It was good seeing them, I wonder if they are around ...

@AIQ He has significantly reduced the amount of time he spends on ELL
To be honest, the time I'm spending on ELL right now was just to help the elections be successful and do what I can to help the new mods get their feet under them. Soon I will just be annoying y'all in chat occasionally

AIQ
But when you say spend less time on ELL, you actually mean SE, right? Or do you and J.R. have another site where you like to contribute?
I think, J.R. is the kind of person I would like to really piss off just to hear some well-written rude comments
@EddieKal Sorry to bug you unnecessarily
In "... I thought 'Well since no one was doing it I better take it on.' " shouldn't we use "is" given that was the current state when you were doing the thinking

Thanks for spotting it

@AIQ No back during the upheaval last year we both kind of decided to take a break from SE entirely

@CowperKettle Interesting, so this explains why I really enjoyed walking the streets and the down-town in Yerevan. It is sad they are changing the layout of the cities to force in more people. It is really sad!

I had expected to be completely gone long before this, but it took forever to get ELL's election scheduled
Partly because I let them leave my diamond on even though I wasn't using it
so it looked like ELL was OK when it really needed more active moderators

@AIQ I think you should be at least able to so taiga sort of greens in high latitudes, because they grow in Siberia.

@AIQ Because I'm Catholic and I believe in redemption for people
and I've witnessed companies where everyone I met was well-intentioned but somehow the company still did evil things
So, it takes a lot for a company to get off my list, but people never get put on it

@ColleenV (^_^)/

Or at least that's what I aspire to do. Sometimes my aspirations exceed my ability.

Only someone in his position can be like that.
If ELL was to be claimed as a single person's work, J.R. would have the biggest share in that.

He literally built it from scratch, and fought the initial ELU–ELL 100 . . . days war.

Corporate personhood is the legal notion that a corporation, separately from its associated human beings (like owners, managers, or employees), has at least some of the legal rights and responsibilities enjoyed by natural persons. In the United States and most countries, corporations, as legal persons, have a right to enter into contracts with other parties and to sue or be sued in court in the same way as natural persons or unincorporated associations of persons. In a U.S. historical context, the phrase "Corporate Personhood" refers to the ongoing legal debate over the extent to which rights...

@M.A.R. That need not be said

Sure, I realize it may seem in poor taste to some folks.
In my office we have a guy who says 'fuck' often when he is excited or animated. He has a form of Tourettes syndrome. He has said he wants to reduce this. The strange thing is what has actually happened is that everybody, including senior managers, now says 'fuck' a lot more. — Michael Harvey 31 mins ago

Whatever effect it is, it's much more prevalent for swearing

No, you just notice it more because of the taboo
unless your parents don't mind you swearing like that...?

No really, I objectively swear more when I watch HBO

No I believe you do, but you also mirror other things you're less aware of

Of course not to anyone. I'm a very very polite person, or my Persian self, towards others

Noun: bupkis (uncountable)
  1. Absolutely nothing; nothing of value, significance, or substance.
  2. We searched for hours and found bupkis.

I have never thought about it this seriously.
I mean, you brought up a good discussion.
It's interesting that "instrument" and "equipment" are different, the former is always used singular.

@M.A.R. It needs to have room for properly stressing the syllables. I EX-puLEET-ing agree. The "v" is too difficult in there when you're angry. You'll splutter and that's undignified.

Yeah
The joys of multilingualism

I now realize how the mandatory English courses taught in Iran suck to the core!

@Cardinal Don't worry, they have company

7:52 PM
Still better than nothing though.

It's hard for a language course not to suck in an evaluation

I wish we were familiarized with Russian or German as well.

Some of the stories we've seen in questions from asian students seems to give Iran's curriculum a run for its money.

LoL

Which means it's a systematic problem of basing the teaching methods on exaggerated non-facts about the human mind and pseudoscience.
So I've found, if you critically examine a course for French in Italy, there's almost equal likelihood for it to suck as well.

7:55 PM
Oh idiom of the day give (one) a run for (one's) money or offer significant challenge or competition
2

And that it kinda sorta works, in that you WILL eventually get more fluent in a language as you commit to it and use it, doesn't help anyone trying to fix it all, and even counts as evidence for people who want to like the teaching methods
@ColleenV It's a very pragmatic idiom

@M.A.R. It even has it's own ELU question and answer:
5
Q: Literal meaning of "to give a run for someone's money"

UncleZeivAccording to the Free Dictionary, the figurative meaning of to give a run for someone's money is "to be as good as someone." But what's the literal meaning of the sentence?

I've been studying some anatomy and I read "Lateral meaning of"

The curriculum in Iran only includes some very basic English and Arabic courses and a hell lots of inaccurate theocratic non-senses.
@M.A.R. Nod

Well, the English course sucks. They tried to improve it and it sucks only slightly less. The Arabic course sucks really, really bad.

7:59 PM
Most education where a government is involved in deciding the curriculum is questionable at best and only rescued by the existence of brilliant teachers.

It's essentially wobbling between being a kids cartoony language course and being Cambridge Grammar of Arabic Language
Now if you can't picture that, don't worry, I can't either. And I already passed 6 years of Arabic courses.

@M.A.R. I kind of regret that I have almost forgotten Arabic, but honestly I've never been very interested in that language either!

Every time I try to type "curriculum" I have to auto-correct it. My spelling of words that have to many similar shapes in a row is terrible

@M.A.R. LoL
@ColleenV :-).

@ColleenV But this one's especially bad. There's no focus on conversation. I have done it for 6 years and I can't have a single simple conversation with an Arab, even though I know more grammar than most native Arabic speakers
There's zero listening. Not a single exercise in 5 textbooks with an audio image beside it.
How ancient do you have to be.

8:03 PM
@M.A.R. Wow. Well I guess it makes sense if they just want you reading and writing it, not talking to people in it.

The only ever thing coming close to being a focus (and still being far from it) was writing, and I can't compose a 250-word essay on a topic.

@M.A.R. Yes, this is true. I have an Egyptian friend and he said how on the earth you know about this grammatical points! However, at the same time, I not able to form a meaningful sentence!
:))

And it's almost the same letters in both alphabets. Like half of Persian's vocabulary is distorted or undistorted Arabic words.
It's like teaching a Berlin German Swiss German. For five years. And failing at it.
Miserably. Utterly.
I'm running out of short abrupt things to end in a period.
