12:00 AM
@AlanMunn: you also won a free upgrade to Mountain Lion on October. :)

@PauloCereda Oh lucky me. I'm still running Snow Leopard on all of my other machines. Just what I need to feel more out of date. :)

@AlanMunn My bad. :) If it makes you feel better, I'm still with Snow Leopard, and I believe egreg has Leopard. :) But there will be no escape, your Mini will come with a Lion. :)

@PauloCereda Imagine if @egreg took the same attitude to OS versions as music!

@AlanMunn Oh no! :)
Tiger and Panther FTW.

@PauloCereda I was more thinking of System 7. (Before you were born, probably.)

12:11 AM
@AlanMunn Ooh! :) I was a little boy playing soccer at that time. :) I'm from System II on. :P

12:30 AM
@BrentLongborough: I found this pearl for Lua: moonscript.org It reminds me of Haskell. :)

Q: Japanese font not displayed in Acrobat Reader (Ubuntu 10.04LTS)

mishaI'm having problems displaying a Japanese font in Acrobat Reader (version 9.5.1). Instead of the font, I just get circles. If I look at the fonts in Acrobat, I get this: It looks like for some reason it can't find the GothicBBB font. Here are the fonts inside the file in more detail: misha...

Off topic?

8:12 AM
@JosephWright Do you really want to redefine \__JS_format:n at each call of \getperson, \getemail and so on?

@egreg There are various possible approaches: setting equal is reasonable fast so seemed OK. I guess you'd prefer something like \IfBooleanT #1 { \textit }

@JosephWright \IfBooleanTF #1 { \emph } { \use:n }, of course. But probably I'd split the calls:
\IfBooleanTF #1
 { \__JS_format:nnn { \__JS_getname:n } { \emph } { #2 } }
 { \__JS_format:nnn { \__JS_getname:n } { \use:n } { #2 } }
with appropriate definition of \__JS_format:nnn

@egreg Reasonable approach. I'd actually thought that for a 'real' case the entire code should of course be in a code-level function. I'll revise this a bit.

Q: Specifying an oldstyle number font with fontspec

Tobias SchulaI have some trouble setting oldstyle numbers in my document. I load the font (in this case an early palatino) and define the smallcaps font via fontspec. But the oldstyle numbers are in the smallcaps variant of this font and don't display in the main text. \setmainfont[ Numbers={Proportional, Ol...

Does this look like a dupe as suggested?

@JosephWright Of course not: the OP uses the (to me unknown) Palmer font, Khaled's answer is about TeX Gyre Pagella.

@egreg But the question suggests this is just a Palatino clone, so why not use the TeX Gyre one

@JosephWright The OP tells why in a comment.

@egreg Ah right, I'd missed that
@egreg Oh for a properly systematic way of dealing with fonts: has anyone suggested some form of globally unique ID for them?

@JosephWright I believe that one can register font IDs with Adobe.

8:49 AM
@egreg Wasn't quite what I had in mind: vendor dependent and probably not systematic in the way I was thinking

9:12 AM
@JosephWright I read the question and it seems to be in topic: it boils down to a problem about embedding a font using platex and dvipdfmx

@egreg OK, I did not read in great detail but was concerned that most of it did not mention TeX. I'm not sure how many platex experts we have!
Which reminds me I need to write some driver code for dvipdfmx

9:27 AM
@JosephWright Consulting the vast documentation about it. :(

@egreg Yes, I'm aware of that

1 hour later…
10:30 AM
@DavidCarlisle Did you see Village's question about tabularx and apa.cls? Don't worry, it's not a bug in tabularx: the class redefines \tabular to \def\@halignto{to\linewidth}\let\BBAB\table@BBAB\@tabular{@{\extracolsep{\fill}‌}#1}, go figure. :(

10:47 AM
@egreg Hadn't seen that one yet. But I wouldn't have worried. My packages don't have bugs, as you should know.
@egreg ug they don't even used consistent names for the old version \orig@ and \old@ for the end and start of tabular??

@DavidCarlisle Nice way of writing code. :) Why being dully consistent?

11:06 AM
Best way to start Friday! :P

@PauloCereda I like it better than the awful and pathetic original version. :)
@PauloCereda By the way, rep cap obtained. Today it was quite easy: a couple of very good questions.

Coffins pop-quiz question: should \TypesetCoffins (or code-level equivalent \coffin_typeset:Nnnnn) imply horizontal mode?

11:53 AM
@egreg Yay! :)
@egreg I thought the same. :)

12:05 PM
@JosephWright Yes. (Except when you need it to be "No".)

Just the thing for @paulo :-)

@StephanLehmke OMG! :)

12:25 PM
The current exhibition is very near to where I live :-)

@StephanLehmke Really?! How nice! :)
I want to be German.

Maybe I should go there with my kids next week (holiday) and then report here :-)

@StephanLehmke Yay! Photos please. :)

New Gravatar for @Paulo:

@StephanLehmke LOL Che Guevara's special cameo in a DuckTales episode. :P

1:24 PM
Yay, Santos Dumont! :)

1:58 PM
Oh I thought the comment would expand. :(

2:25 PM
@PauloCereda I added one. :)

@egreg Fantastic! :)

This chat is now full of ducks!

@JasperLoy Patos, to be precise.

@JasperLoy My hovercraft is full of eels!

2:41 PM
\usepackage{hungarianphrasebooklipsum}
:)

user19161
3:13 PM
@paulo Do you use Chrome on Fedora in SE chat at all?

@JasperLoy No, Firefox. :) TBH I'm not a big fan of Chrome.

user19161
@PauloCereda I asked because I have great problems with using Chrome in chat on Linux. Firefox works much better! I just have to use an older version of Flash then, since the only way to get new Flash is to use Chrome's built-in version.

@JasperLoy I tried only once with Chrome (I wanted to see the desktop notifications), but the experience was bad. :( I don't like Chrome's approach of "batteries-included", I also had a Flash problem. :(
@Jasper: speaking of Fedora, how's the usage so far? :)

user19161
@PauloCereda Oh, TBH, I switched back to Debian. I guess I am always switching! But Fedora's good. I just find it weird that they make kernel version changes even on the same release.

@JasperLoy Ah, I think the kernel version changes are unusual too. :)

user19161
3:24 PM
@PauloCereda On F16 I was left with an unbootable kernel once. Luckily one can choose to boot into the older kernel after GRUB loads.

@JasperLoy hehe I can relate to that. :) My netbook's wifi was unrecognized after a kernel update. I had to use the previous one and then the next-next kernel update worked. :D

4:03 PM
Searching the web I have found a new program. Conky -- I love to play with it ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Cool, the system monitor?

@PauloCereda Yes
Here the result of the last two hours ;-)

@MarcoDaniel Cool! :)
@Marco: I have good news! Hopefully I finish the manual today, and I'll commit the ultra-mega-super-alterations to our arara, as well as our downloads section and homepage. :)

4:22 PM
@PauloCereda First I must install git ;-)

@MarcoDaniel No git?! Which distro? :P
@Aditya: could we pick a date for our interview? :)

4:41 PM
@PauloCereda I had to changed my hdd. No I must install all programs ;-(

@MarcoDaniel Oh. :(

Q: Creating multiple language versions from single latex source by fetching translation from file

arkaschaI could not really find anything matching, maysome someone got an idea or a starting point: I want to maintain a collection of documents written in Kile, Using LaTeX converted by xetex into pdf format. These documents have to be updated from time to time. I required each document to be availabl...

I seem to recall another question that talked about this too. I've added two possible candidates, but I think there's at least one more. Anyone know it?

@AlanMunn I added one more.

5:44 PM
@StephanLehmke That's exactly it. Thanks.

@AlanMunn Noone ever gets rep for this kind of work (and not even an unsung hero badge ;-)

me wantee TUG 2012 videos!!!!!

@StephanLehmke True, but we know who we are. And I don't know what I'd do with more rep anyway.

I can't wait to reach enough rep to earn the right of using my own credit card.

@AlanMunn Well most of it might be in joke, but you see the fuss being made about rep achievements here. And joke or not, on a subconciuos level it might still encourage to write an answer even though one knows this must have been answered before.
And joke aside, as soon as I have more time again to spend here at last, I'll make much more active use of bounties, which will serve to keep me away from trusted user status forever ;-)

5:57 PM
@StephanLehmke That's true. I do try to avoid answering if I think there's a duplicate.
@StephanLehmke There's not much to being a trusted user. You can edit tag wikis without review, I think that's about it. The 10k stuff is a bit more helpful as the site grows, it's helpful to have more edit approvers,

@AlanMunn No super secret League of Extraordinary TeX Gentlemen?

@AlanMunn I wasnt't completely in earnest. But rep must be worth something, otherwise why make all the leagues and privileges &c?

6:27 PM
@StephanLehmke I think the popularity of the leagues depends very much on the particular site. I'm not sure that anyone here really pays that much attention to them. The privileges are more relevant, simply because they encourage different kinds of participation I think. And rep itself acts as a kind of implicit "thank you", and also acknowledgement from your peers which is always appreciated.

6:58 PM
Hello, I'm relatively new to stackexchange/stackoverflow community. I hope this is an appropriate place to ask, but is there one reason to post/participate in tex.stackexchange.com or use a latex tag in stackoverflow?

@JM If you have a TeX/LaTeX question, it's better to ask at tex.stackexchange.com; posts about TeX/LaTeX on SO are regularly migrated here.
@StephanLehmke Being top of the list? :)

@egreg That must be soooo boring gnaws teeth

@StephanLehmke There's always the 150k target. Then 200k and so on. :)
@AlanMunn The next trusted user should be @percusse; I guess he'll overtake Aditya soon.

@egreg You start sounding like Scrooge McDuck ;-)

@StephanLehmke Rep 1 gazillion. :)
@StephanLehmke In Italy it's Paperon de' Paperoni and his wealth is measured in "fantastiliardi".

J M
7:11 PM
@egreg thanks, that was my general impression. I just am not quite sure about the "philosophy" of the two different choices.

@JM There's actually one choice for TeX/LaTeX questions.

@egreg ... and I start feeling like Uriah Heep ('umble 'umble ;-)

J M
@egreg Sorry, can you expand on that? As in, only one choice because posts are so often sent here?

@StephanLehmke In these days I'm rereading "The Pickwick Papers". Maybe I'll take "David Copperfield" for my holidays.
@JM Such posts will come here soon anyway.

J M
@egreg Ok, thanks, I'll continue to hang around. I enjoy the community here already, so thanks for taking the time to answer my questions

7:17 PM
@egreg ... have his carcass :-) :-)

@JM If you continue to ask about floatrow don't expect answers from me. :) That package is scaring. :)

Great Britain 0:1 Brazil.

@egreg The Pickwick Papers was the very first Dickens novel I read in english. I had such a hard time ploughing through all the strange vocabulary ;-)
@egreg Dickens novels always make me cry ;-)

@StephanLehmke My strategy is "don't stop at unknown words, you'll understand them later on".

J M
@egreg Hahaha, sure I understand, I'm sure am glad there is someone out there who is familiar and experienced with it! I wish I had thought to come on here earlier, I can't tell you how many hours I've wasted tweaking things on my own trying to figure out why it wasn't working.

7:20 PM
@StephanLehmke In my LaTeX course I always show the beginning of "David Copperfield" and ask if anybody knows what it is. This year only one knew. After having googled the text. :)

@egreg And the Del Piero photo. :)

@PauloCereda Of course!

@egreg Yea, but I was struggling at words such as "bachelor" (why is his academic degree so important?) or "master" (why is that young boy in command?). That was right after school, and english education in school was not a real preparation for that...

Penalty kick for Brazil!

@PauloCereda back to the usual football then no more duck talk

7:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle LOL

@PauloCereda Is Pato playing? (Just to keep on the duck talk.)

Great Britain 0:2 Brazil.
@egreg He's in the bench, I guess. :) Let me check. :D

@PauloCereda that really isn't showing due respect for the hosts

@DavidCarlisle Pesky Brazilians.

@PauloCereda It should be England.

7:24 PM
As as I can understand from the local press the assumption is that since the Olympics are here you'll all be polite and let us win everything

@egreg I might be mixing up things here but I think David Copperfield was a little less amazing than the other novels I read. I kept thinking "why isn't he dumping his stupid wife already" ;-)

@egreg I thought so. :( I would be way more interesting.

@egreg I think it's the first ever GB football team: probably why they are losing

@DavidCarlisle Oh, it's in preparation for the Olympics.

GOL Jason Steele
LAD Micah Richards
ZAD Neil Taylor
ZAE James Tomkins
LAE Ryan Bertrand
VOL Danny Rose
VOL Joe Allen
MEC Tom Cleverley
MEC Ryan Giggs
ATA Bellamy
ATA Daniel Sturridge
I have no idea who they are.
@egreg Ah yes, I forgot to mention. :) It's the olympic team. :)

7:26 PM
@PauloCereda they are all species of duck

@DavidCarlisle Mallards! :)

anyway an Englishman looks set to win the tour de France, even if we do lose a pesky football game or two

@PauloCereda They're all young players. Ryan Giggs is young inside. :)

@egreg Ooh I forgot about him! :) This one I know. :)

I don't know what the rules are; all under 24, except for Giggs and Bellamy. All English and Welsh.

7:31 PM
@egreg I don't think the Scottish FA allowed any of their players. (They tried to not have a GB team at all)

@DavidCarlisle I see.

@egreg If I'm not mistaken, all players must be under 23, except for only 3 players who can be of any age.

@PauloCereda Brazil has Hulk, I see on Wikipedia. :)

Afraid of losing the "home nation" rules where the UK is allowed to enter 4 teams into every international competition:-)

@egreg :P new Chelsea player. :)

7:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle And they always hope to leave the UK, after 300 years. :)

@PauloCereda I think Brazil v GB Women is the first round of the Olympics proper I hope your women show more respect and don't try too hard to win

@DavidCarlisle Oh don't worry, our women team is bad. :)

Though I understand that in general, there is a long tradition of women's football in south america ;-)

@StephanLehmke Peruvians.
:)

Hard to tell apart from here.

7:50 PM
@PauloCereda: you updated the repository and the gh-pages. Great

@MarcoDaniel The gh-pages is still a work in progress, but everything else is updated. :) Check the downloads section. :)

@PauloCereda I saw
I think tomorrow I will have a closer look

@MarcoDaniel I'm really sorry for the delay, my worry was to finish the manual, so I could pack everything. :)

8:19 PM
@egreg: Pato entered now in the game! :)

@PauloCereda Hey! A duck!

@egreg :)

8:43 PM
Ok. Lion server up and running. Now is there anyone here who knows about network topology. Do I use the server as the DNS server or the Airport Base Station?

@AlanMunn Already?! My Mac isn't shipped yet. :)

@PauloCereda I got my first apple yesterday!

@PauloCereda The wonders of next day shipping. (And being in the US, I suppose.)
@StefanKottwitz Wow, more people succumbing to peer pressure. :)

@AlanMunn actually, I wanted to have a good ebook reader with some plus, so I chose the HD iPad

@StefanKottwitz I see. So you haven't completely gone over to the light side. How do you like the iPad? It's the one piece of apple hardware I don't own.

8:53 PM
@StefanKottwitz Yay! Which one? :)

@AlanMunn It's great to read on it, crystal clear sharp text

@StefanKottwitz I'm considering of acquiring one, but the "old" iPad 2. I killed my piggy bank for my new iMac. :)

@PauloCereda I did not like the old one

@AlanMunn Apple neighbourhood. :)

@PauloCereda the new one had a killer feature with its 2048-by-1536 resolution

8:55 PM
@StefanKottwitz Really? Because of the screen?
@StefanKottwitz Wow!

@PauloCereda Yes, I read a lot, I travel a lot, so I wanted to have a good screen

@StefanKottwitz And never came for a coffee here. :( /sob <3

@PauloCereda I managed it to come to Miami for 8 days, until last Sunday

@StefanKottwitz Oh! :)
@AlanMunn Yet. :)

@PauloCereda had a nice time with a Ford Mustang convertible (cabrio) as company car

8:58 PM
@AlanMunn Now, back to your question. :) I think you could centralize things in the server and point the Airport Base Station to it. :)
@StefanKottwitz Wow! :)

@PauloCereda actually I was there for a satellite engineer training and certification

@StefanKottwitz Cool! :)

@PauloCereda but there was time for more

@StefanKottwitz :)

I'll show a picture soon :) it's on my laptop
with the car of course, not with the girls

9:02 PM

10:36 PM
does TeXLive comes with GNUPLOT?

@leo No.

@leo I don't think so. 'which gnuplot' returns nothing on my system.

leo
@AlanMunn so you can ask to tlmgr?

@leo Not sure what you mean. You can't use tlmgr to install gnuplot.

leo
@AlanMunn you have say "'which gnuplot'..." so I thought that which is a command to see wath programs are are in your distribution

10:44 PM
@leo Oh. which is a generic unix command which tells you if a program is in your path. It's not part of TeX Live.

leo
@AlanMunn I see. Is there something like that in Windows environment?

@leo There is a version for Windows in the Gnuplot site, gnuplot.info

115
Q: Is there an equivalent of 'which' on windows?

naminI would like to find the full path to a program in Windows. Is there an equivalent to the UNIX command 'which'? On UNIX, which command prints the full path of the given command.

leo
thanks
