Q: Do the negative effects of wish apply to free wishes?

Tempestas LudiThe description of the DnD 5e wish spell states "Finally, there is a 33 percent chance that you are unable to cast wish ever again if you suffer this stress." There are items and situations that grant a "free" wish spell. An example of this is the deck of many things (moon card). Now, if a play...

What edition of D&D are you asking about?

Hmm... was such a risk present in earlier editions?

@PurpleMonkey The question is closed. What other option do I have? Also I keep getting downvotes for my Answers without any explanation. So it is getting realy tiresome.

@Christopher read the linked meta. Comments aren't the place for answers. You just have to waiting until the question gets reopened to answer it.

@PurpleMonkey And once the mods do reopen it, I will post it as an answer. Asuming the mod does not just use that time window to guarantee his anwer will be the first. Till then I am not enough of a bad person to ignore a person seeking help. Since there is obviously an answer that is also version agnostic, I am not sure why it is closed in the first place.

@Christopher and it's great that you want to help, it really is, but comments aren't the place for answers, period. If it does get reopened and someone does answer it before you then that's just too bad, there'll be plenty of other questions to answer. As for the obviously being an answer that is also version agnostic then sometimes, yes, but most no. Different versions have different rules and are essentially different games. The way it's ruled in one edition may be different to how it's ruled in another so we need to know what rules we're looking at to give a proper answer.

Christopher, can you provide me a link to a question and answer where you think this happened? Asuming the mod does not just use that time window to guarantee his anwer will be the first. I would like to bring that to the attention of the diamond mods if that is something that is happening.

If this question is about fifth edition DnD here are some questions that may help answer yours, or perhaps already do so: "Magic Items with Wishes in them" and "Does the wish-granting Efreeti from an Efreeti Bottle suffer wish stress?"

@Christopher Anyone with 3000 rep can vote to close or reopen a question (it takes 5 votes to do either). We only have 4 actual moderators, indicated by diamonds after their names, and they usually don't get involved in opening/closing questions. If you'd like to take part in our stack's (endless) discussion about closing questions that lack a system tag, that can be found here. "Don't answer in comments" is a rule in every stack.

I have closed your question because I felt it was approximately identical to the other one. If you feel this is not the case, feel free to edit to explain why; your question can always be reopened.
Related questions: "Wish on a scroll: Who suffers the consequences?" and "Does the wish-granting Efreeti from an Efreeti Bottle suffer wish stress?" and the following closed question: "[Do you “suffer stress” even if you use a wish from an item? [duplicate]](rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/108618)";

@Christopher Hey there, I'm one of the diamond mods for this site. It looks like you may be bumping up against some of our rules and guidelines here. I just wanted to let you know that we're here to help. If there is anything I (or anybody else) can do to clarify things, please let me know.
I will say, that specifically, answering in comments is something we won't budge on here. The reasons are outlined in the Meta that is linked. Comments were never designed to be used as answers, it discourages editing from OP, and it breaks our quality control in many ways.

What is a "free wish" anyway? Magic items permit the user to cast the spell themselves.

@Christopher If you have any questions you want people to look at and try to point out why it may be getting downvotes so you can improve, I'm willing to try and take a look for you.

Is there a wish granting djinni in a bottle effect that doesn't grant the user the ability to cast wish, but instead does something resembling wish on their behalf?

@GcL Good question
> Moon. You are granted the ability to cast the wish spell 1d3 times.
I wouldn't rate that as a free wish, but maybe therein lies the confusion.

GcL
@Rubiksmoose If the character is actually casting the wish spell, it's definitely the same case as casting the wish spell.... because that's exactly what is says it is.

@GcL Right, I mean OP's confusion, not mine. I agree with that reading.

GcL
OP might be wondering if there is a little know caveat, mechanic, or ruling that is a loophole.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking as well.
