@Someone_Evil I assume, yeah. I figure they didn't put out an errata PDF since it's basically the one thing that got fixed? I'm only assuming it has actually been fixed since the DDB version of Arcane Shot doesn't say it needs a magic arrow
though tbf I guess I could also check my physical copy
Looking at D&D Beyond in more detail: Arcane Shot's description on the fighter class page and mind spike's listing in the standalone spell listing are correct (i.e. don't have the errors mentioned above). In the XGtE compendium content (i.e. the digital book itself), Arcane Shot is also correctly phrased; however, the mind spike error still appears in the XGtE compendium
@Someone_Evil I've always wanted to see the result of a diff on diff(current printing, my printing) and the errata doc. In other words, a list of all the stuff that's different between the book in my hands and the book they're selling but that isn't in the errata. I know it's not null =\
@Medix2 I believe new printings don't necessarily imply changes, just... well, new printings. e.g. if they print 1000 books (these numbers are made up), and later they're almost sold out so they print 1000 more, that's a new printing. right?
@nitsua60 Haha, some might say there's even a Q&A that does that for the 2018 PHB errata ;)
The entry on the aboleth (MM p.8) says about Enslave (SU)
Three times per day, an aboleth can attempt to enslave any one living creature within 30 feet.
Does that mean it could enslave three player characters in one encounter and any one means just one at the time? Or does it mean it can o...
@V2Blast Regarding the recent Abjurer (Volo's) question, aren't monster CR's mostly determined formulaically? So one could explain why it has the CR it does? (Then again, I might have completely invented the idea of CR being mathematically calculable)
Hmm actually I guess I'm thinking of questions like this and that might be sufficiently different
@Medix2 All of that is true in theory, but in practice it's never that simple. A question of the form "what is the CR of the abjurer according to the DMG guidelines" would certainly be answerable, though.
I think I'm going to accept that this question isn't a duplicate and just try very hard to accept the great number of 5e-dnd battle-grid questions that exist
And yeah, the abjurer question basically asks "why'd they give it this CR" rather than "is this CR accurate based on the encounter-building guidelines" or even "how is CR determined". It's a subtle distinction but I think it's worth exploring
With the Grung's racial-trait Poisonous Skin you can apply poison to your weapon as part an an attack:
You can also apply this poison to any piercing weapon as part of an

Mind spike, a 2nd-level spell included in Xanathar's Guide to Everything (p. 162), seems to use different damage dice for the base damage and for additional damage when cast at higher levels.
I have the First Printing of XGtE, which has the following text (bold for emphasis mine):

I'm playing a silverbrow human sorcerer in D&D 3.5e and a prestige class I plan on taking in the future requires me to select a school of magic to prohibit. I'm having trouble deciding which school to choose, so I'm wondering if limited wish would allow me to duplicate the effect of a spell from ...
@NautArch Yes and no. Downtime is super ambiguous on what exactly happens other than "I work on doing this thing" so presumably you would in fact be taking short and long rests, but they don't matter, so you don't need to track them.
yea, it depends on what you need on the die. 9 on the die is the break-even point. (If you need less than a 9, use the 2d10+ ; more than 9, use 2d20--)
And if I were using this goofy house rule, I'd allow 10-10 to crit.
I have a minivan (Sienna) and I like it, it's our third, but I don't love it. I loved my 300ZX. I loved our Mini Cooper S. The van allows me to do some flexible stuff with church/volunteer events.
So I've officially ditched the "Bonus Action Spellcasting" rule in my campaign, after I had a player start apologizing in the middle of a session because she was struggling to follow the rule.
@goodguy5 Paraphrasing: "If you cast any spell as a Bonus Action, then only Cantrips are permitted to be cast as Actions or Reactions for the duration of your turn"
1. If you cast a leveled spell as a bonus action, you can't cast a leveled spell as an Action or Reaction 2. If you cast a leveled spell as an action, you can't cast any spell using your Bonus Action
The rule is needlessly complicated and, hilariously and ironically, doesn't solve the exact problem it was purportedly designed to fix (namely: making it easier to make decisions about which spells to cast during your turn).
@goodguy5 Yeah, I'm tempted to maybe introduce a relaxed version as a house rule, i.e. "if you use your bonus action to cast a spell, you can't cast more than one leveled spell during your turn", but pondering even that version it just feels like it's setting arbitrary restrictions for no good reason.
@goodguy5 I do, and I'm going to keep an eye on them. But the player doesn't metagame much, and even so, my general attitude is that Sorcerers are underpowered anyways, so if he wants to blow all his third level spell slots in a single turn to double-fireball a troublesome group of enemies, I say more power to him.
@JohnP We got a 2014 Limited and cannot be happier with it. 31 MPG on the highway at 65MPH, about 29 at 75, but above that ... heh, well, wind resistance is a thing.

@KorvinStarmast Our trim package has electric/leather/heated seats, and most of it's a waste. About the only thing that comes in handy is heated, which is odd in Phoenix, but...
@NautArch Yeah, my wife is a Phx native and really likes them in the winter, and I do use them driving after tournaments. I'd have never made it home this week without it, Nationals was a bit rough. The other kids in my ring were mean this year.
@RandomDudeWithAKnife @trogdor indicated that he liked 4e while we were playing 5e together on line. I won't speak to which he likes best, but he seems to have a good feel for 4e and he indicated that he found the organization of skills and powers a lot more user friendly in 4e.
@NautArch I think that Joshua Aslan Smith and wax eagle were pretty well versed in 4e, and if you can catch miniman I think he's pretty solid on that system.
@RandomDudeWithAKnife I really enjoyed a lot of 4e (played about 120 hours), specifically the balancing, tactics, and rather excellent job at avoiding having a Fighter go "I attack" and avoiding Linear Fighter : Quadratic Wizard. There are things I disliked, but they were more easily "fixed" than what I dislike in 5e
Two of the races you're allowed to use in D&D are half-elf and half-orc. My first character was a half-elf. Usually the other half is human but is it possible to have a character who is half-elf and half-orc?
Are any of the other main races compatible? I heard someone saying the dwarves were hal...
@RandomDudeWithAKnife Treaty of Thranehold required dismantling the forges that create warforged. Some good story hooks for secret forges still existing hidden by house Cannith. Also, there's a novel that includes evidence that warforged may have been created on Xen'Drik prior to House Cannith "inventing" them.
@Medix2 I think that's a bit harsh. I've found them to be just as industrious as any other humanoid species. On the other hand, they rarely need to screw in light bulbs on account of darkvision, so maybe that's how that dirty rumor started.
Hmm. Could a Rogue/Druid multiclass cast magic stone, use a sling to launch said stones, and get sneak attack damage on a hit in addition to the 1d6+WIS?
I was reading this Question, and notice there are ton of abbreviations in it. As someone not super familiar with every released book for 5E, it made the question hard to read and I had to google a few of them to figure out what they all mean.
I was gonna edit in the full titles of the books, bu...
The relevance is "yes, you can't TWF ranged weapons, but here's something you can do to accomplish that with crossbows".
So the damage from magic stone is magical since the source is a spell, even if you're launching the pebble from a mundane sling. What about the sneak attack damage? Would that also be magical?
sneak attack damage is the same kind of damage as the normal damage the attack does
so, yes, if the attack is already doing magical damage, the sneak attack damage is correspondingly magical and overcomes damage resistance appropriately
Premise
Sneak Attack, like Divine Smite, is not weapon damage according to the ruling for the Great Weapon Fighting fighting style:
Does the benefit of the Savage Attacker feat apply to ad-ditional effects like the rogue’s Sneak Attack or the pal-adin’s Divine Smite? No. The benefit of Savag...
Question is there any action economy difference between using a focus over a component pouch besides in such instances as MC or holy symbols on shields? One of my players is convinced they need to to drawn and stowed.
Also, just like attacking with a bow requires drawing an arrow (from a quiver or whatever), you could argue that casting a spell requires drawing a focus and thus the drawing and stowing is including (or assumed) in taking the action.
@Yuuki Object interactions are normally things "included in taking the action". Attacking with a sword requires drawing the sword, and that's an object interaction.
@Carcer I'm not really sure how to put this, but I'm unsure that grammar policing is necessary or even remotely helpful, least of all mandatory (granted I'm particularly against prescriptive grammar, I'm a linguist)
but one of the problems with relying on his off-the-cuff remarks is that they lack context. like, was he talking about a component pouch that's already in your hand, and you just need to pull out the component itself? or one that's hooked on your belt for easy access? or one that's in a waterproof pouch inside your backpack which has been swallowed by a purple worm?
Some spells that are cast with a reaction, such as Feather Fall, require material components. Suppose I am using a component pouch instead of a focus, but I'm not currently holding a small feather. If a trap door opens under the party, am I able to quickly reach for the feather in my pouch as par...
But in general, it's not so much the 'free object interaction' that's being used, but that you just need a hand free to interact. So if you're casting more than one spell in a turn, that's not a problem.
@MarkWells if I understand you correctly you are saying foci/component don't need an item interaction to pick up as part of a reaction spell but they do need one to put down?
@kent Holy SYmbol (for paladins/clerics) says "To use the symbol in this way, the caster must hold it in hand, wear it visibly, or bear it on a shield."
so it looks like that for an arcane focus, it does have to be in your hand RAW.
@kent If you're playing RAW and using an arcane focus, you need it in your hands to cast a material component required spell.
@kent For an arcane focus, you'd need to hold it. If it's already exposed, I'd say you can put a hand on it as part of casting the spell. If it's stowed in any way, then you'd need to draw it first
I have a halfling cleric of Bahamut who wears his holy symbol as an amulet around his neck as a spellcasting focus (so material components are not an issue).
However, as per this question, this does not cover the Somatic component of any spells he casts.
He also wields a light crossbow as his on...
The versatile weapon property says (PHB, p. 147):
Versatile. This weapon can be used with one or two hands. A damage value in parentheses appears with the property–the damage when the weapon is used with two hands to make a melee attack.
A weapon with the versatile property, such as a longs...
So touching the focus or component is part of the casting of the spell. Dropping/ungriping is a free action. Then grabbing rhe two handed weapon is the free item interaction. You're right @NautArch maybe hand waving is best.
Although a monocle made from a transparent gem is technically a focus :)
@kent usually dropping something is a null action. Doesn't cost anything.
@kent but you're not holding it.
There's a lot of minutiae you can get into with casting requirements. But I'm not sure it actually improves anything unless your table is really interested in it. Sort of like tracking ammo/rations/etc.
@NautArch you are probably right. I'll just limit to whether they have free hands and allow that one player do to his complicated tying a druidic focus to his wrist.
switching from one to two hands on a thing or vice versa has generally been ruled as having no action economy cost, as far as I've seen. Unofficial Crawford tweet ruled the same way
@kent As long as what they're doing makes narrative sense, I see no big deal about it. My DM had previously allowed me to tattoo my holy symbol as a paladin on myself visibly. Removed that whole need, but it did make me very well known. I couldn't exactly hide who I was when my holy symbol is tattooed on my face.
But I do like @MarkWells distinction that stowed items cannot be accessed without an item interaction. It makes casting stealth casting in pockets impossible.
