12:37 AM
@Someone_Evil I assume, yeah. I figure they didn't put out an errata PDF since it's basically the one thing that got fixed? I'm only assuming it has actually been fixed since the DDB version of Arcane Shot doesn't say it needs a magic arrow
though tbf I guess I could also check my physical copy

@V2Blast Which printing do you have? (I might want you to check Mind spike too)

will have to check
4th, apparently... or 5th? the numbers read 9 8 7 6 5

12:53 AM
How much damage does mind spike increase by per higher spell slot used in that printing (p. 162)?

Arcane Shot still reads as "when you fire a magic arrow" for me
@Someone_Evil It still has the 1d6 error (instead of 1d8)
Crawford acknowledges the typo here: sageadvice.eu/2017/12/06/…

@V2Blast The lowest number gives the printing (according to wikipedia), so it's 5th

Looking at D&D Beyond in more detail: Arcane Shot's description on the fighter class page and mind spike's listing in the standalone spell listing are correct (i.e. don't have the errors mentioned above). In the XGtE compendium content (i.e. the digital book itself), Arcane Shot is also correctly phrased; however, the mind spike error still appears in the XGtE compendium

This question is why I'm asking by the way

I'm honestly surprised there are 5 (or more) printings and no errata... like, clearly they changed something

1:12 AM
It doesn't seem to be that many changes (and apparently they didn't change a few things they knew about)

1:41 AM
@Someone_Evil I've always wanted to see the result of a diff on diff(current printing, my printing) and the errata doc. In other words, a list of all the stuff that's different between the book in my hands and the book they're selling but that isn't in the errata. I know it's not null =\

1:53 AM
@Medix2 I believe new printings don't necessarily imply changes, just... well, new printings. e.g. if they print 1000 books (these numbers are made up), and later they're almost sold out so they print 1000 more, that's a new printing. right?
@nitsua60 Haha, some might say there's even a Q&A that does that for the 2018 PHB errata ;)

2:06 AM
@Someone_Evil The "official statement" is a wild goose chase. I suggest "let it go" and become Frozen

@V2Blast Yup--it's just a little less convenient to print out and tuck into the back cover of my PHB than the errata document is =)

Q: Can an aboleth enslave three player characters in one encounter?

TheQThe entry on the aboleth (MM p.8) says about Enslave (SU) Three times per day, an aboleth can attempt to enslave any one living creature within 30 feet. Does that mean it could enslave three player characters in one encounter and any one means just one at the time? Or does it mean it can o...

@V2Blast Regarding the recent Abjurer (Volo's) question, aren't monster CR's mostly determined formulaically? So one could explain why it has the CR it does? (Then again, I might have completely invented the idea of CR being mathematically calculable)
Hmm actually I guess I'm thinking of questions like this and that might be sufficiently different

@Medix2 All of that is true in theory, but in practice it's never that simple. A question of the form "what is the CR of the abjurer according to the DMG guidelines" would certainly be answerable, though.

@Miniman Yeah I may just leave a comment explaining that that's a valid way they could rephrase their question

@Medix2 Sounds like a good idea to me.
Although V2's existing comment already mentions that as an option.

@Miniman Maybe someday I'll learn how to read...

@Medix2 There's an edit mark on it, so he might have used his mod powers to ninja that in there while you weren't looking XD

4:06 AM
Haha
I did edit the comment slightly after posting it initially

I think I'm going to accept that this question isn't a duplicate and just try very hard to accept the great number of 5e-dnd battle-grid questions that exist

And yeah, the abjurer question basically asks "why'd they give it this CR" rather than "is this CR accurate based on the encounter-building guidelines" or even "how is CR determined". It's a subtle distinction but I think it's worth exploring

Q: How much damage does the Mind Spike spell do at higher levels?

RedGeomancerMind spike, a 2nd-level spell included in Xanathar's Guide to Everything (p. 162), seems to use different damage dice for the base damage and for additional damage when cast at higher levels. I have the First Printing of XGtE, which has the following text (bold for emphasis mine): 2nd-level ...

Q: Can limited wish be used to cast spells from prohibited schools of magic?

Just a reminder for those in america in super Tuesday primaries...please vote!
Any discussions about said voting should probably be in NAB...

@NautArch I second that motion

If at all... touchy subject

disagree. Discussion around the act of voting shouldn't be shied away from.

Now, if you want to talk about who to vote for.....

I believe that's what he meant.

2:21 PM
Americans (and anywhere that allows voting) should vote whenever possible.
@JohnP oh, huh. Somehow I missed the word "said"

Yeah, discussion on the importance of voting is a-ok.
Hmm, are long and short rests a thing during downtime?
For 5e

downtime activities don't preclude the ability to take long or short rests
I think it's implicitly, but not explicitly, assumed that you normally get in one long rest a day around whatever other activities you're up to

@NautArch Yes and no. Downtime is super ambiguous on what exactly happens other than "I work on doing this thing" so presumably you would in fact be taking short and long rests, but they don't matter, so you don't need to track them.

@NautArch why do you ask?

@goodguy5 Indefinite wild shape question I would think

is there an absolute value function in anydice?
duh, *googles*

yes

it's the first thing in the function library page

@NautArch Long rests and short rests in down time should probably be discussed with the DM

Is there a way to link anydice results, other than saving a screenshot and attaching them?

@goodguy5 Create a link to the program using the box at the top?

I misspoke.
If I want to show the results, visually, in my answer....

screenshot and upload?

@goodguy5 yep, screenshot and upload. you can also modify the permalink you get in order to point directly to specific results views.

If I realize another solution to a technical question (the current dice weighting question), should I put those in the same answer?

you can add a new answer if it does it in a different way or add a second method to your existing
honestly I think making a new answer if it's an entirely different method is better

Well, I realized that 5e disadvantage already does this, and smoothly

3:01 PM
was out doing a dog poop pickup in my yard and found a 6 six sided die. Have no idea how it got out there.

@NautArch It presumably rolled there

@NautArch presumably, the dog pooped it out

@goodguy5 wasn't in a poop pile. But I now remember giving the die to a neighbor kid a long time ago
must have dropped it

@NautArch rain washes away poop, but not dice.

@goodguy5 I've got big dogs. That rain ain't washing it away.

3:06 PM
@NautArch Are there teeth marks? Are you sure the neighbor kid dropped it? :D

Well, we just had session 0 for a new campaign

@JohnP no teef marks
@RandomDudeWithAKnife are you the DM?

@NautArch no

3:18 PM
hrm.... I wonder if it would ever be worth it to take d10 "advantage" over d20 disadvantage....
low ac targets, I guess.

@goodguy5 human parent.

@goodguy5 I'd probably take the d20 disadvantage.
but i'm basing that off of nothing :)

2d10 advantage :)

yea, it depends on what you need on the die. 9 on the die is the break-even point. (If you need less than a 9, use the 2d10+ ; more than 9, use 2d20--)

And if I were using this goofy house rule, I'd allow 10-10 to crit.

@goodguy5 oh, well that changes my calculus.

3:23 PM
4 times more likely to crit!

that feeling when your wife picks the car she really wants to get and it's mpg is 15-18 :*(

What car?
Are they still making hummers?

lexus gx460
basically hasn't really been updated in a very long time.

christ
I actually really dislike "luxury" SUVs, but for a stupid reason.

what reason?

3:32 PM
@goodguy5 I liked your answer about stealing from disadvantage. :)

In my head, they don't belong to that market.

Like, SUVs are, by name, utility vehicles.

Posrche, Mazeratti, Lexus, etc. don't have any business, imo, making anything that is "utility" adjacent.
And then you can factor in "good" reasons, like economy, mileage, actual utility, etc.
@KorvinStarmast thanks! It dawned on me that I was thinking way too hard about it lol.

Yeah, it's kind of a weird mix. But folks in america like big, heavy cars that can fit lots of stuff and also be nice inside.

My sister has a lexus SUV and she loves it.

And minivans are generally not as well loved.
@KorvinStarmast which one?

I have a RAV 4 for my wife, a "small SUV" and my wife loves it!
@NautArch Well, it's maroon and in Virginia, that's all I remember. :)

3:35 PM
oh yea, Everyone I've ever talked to that \*owns\* one loves it.

But Escalades make me cringe every time.

I have a minivan (Sienna) and I like it, it's our third, but I don't love it. I loved my 300ZX. I loved our Mini Cooper S. The van allows me to do some flexible stuff with church/volunteer events.

my rural is showing, I guess. I happily scooted around in my Cavalier until the baby was being planned.

Now I'm very very happy with our Outback.

We're hoping for a Crosstrek next

We used have a Honda Odyssey that I really liked but now that I'm living on my own, makes no sense to have a minivan.

@NautArch I like the idea of a minivan, except that it feels like I'm driving a tank (or at least it did in my grandmother's .... 2006? caravan).

@NautArch Hmm, I think she go the NX, based on looking at various Lexus SUVs.

3:38 PM
I personally don't like SUVs because I work next to a fairly accident-prone intersection and 100% of the rollover incidents have been SUVs.

@Yuuki My brother in law still has an Odyssey that's like 15 years old. That baby just lasts for ever.

So I've officially ditched the "Bonus Action Spellcasting" rule in my campaign, after I had a player start apologizing in the middle of a session because she was struggling to follow the rule.

@Xirema remind me what it was?

@Xirema I have to keep a 3x5 card with the details on that when I DM so I don't forget how it works.

@goodguy5 Paraphrasing: "If you cast any spell as a Bonus Action, then only Cantrips are permitted to be cast as Actions or Reactions for the duration of your turn"

3:42 PM
@KorvinStarmast We've got two kids, two dogs, and often drive neighbors/friends around. SO we need a 3rd row.

@Xirema How is that different than usual?

@KorvinStarmast my mom just got one of them (hybrid) - loves it.

So it prevents several things:

1. If you cast a leveled spell as a bonus action, you can't cast a leveled spell as an Action or Reaction
2. If you cast a leveled spell as an action, you can't cast any spell using your Bonus Action

@NautArch I love Lexus cars, but I don't feel like paying that high of a price. I find Toyotas to meet my needs nicely. .

@KorvinStarmast The new highlander we really didn't like. And the sequoia is too long for our garage.

3:44 PM
The rule is needlessly complicated and, hilariously and ironically, doesn't solve the exact problem it was purportedly designed to fix (namely: making it easier to make decisions about which spells to cast during your turn).

Our last four cars purchased, between my son, my daughter and my wife and I are: corrola, corrola, RAV 4, Sienna.

We're actually looking at the 2019 lexus with about 11k miles on it and the price is reasonable.
certified preowned

@Xirema I still don't understand how that's different than normal.

@NautArch If you like the price point, the quality on them is pretty good.

@goodguy5 Err, to be clear, I'm describing how the rule works. I've decided to just excise the rule entirely.

3:46 PM
@KorvinStarmast yeah, we should be able to get below 40.

@Xirema yeah, it takes a while to get used to it.
Highlander and Sequoia way too big for us, and for gas guzzling.
Mrs S wants a ForeRunner, she thinks, but I don't find them as comfortable as her RAV 4, nor my Sienna.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I misread you initially to say that you had a house rule about bonus action casting, that you've walked back and decided to ditch
my bad
@KorvinStarmast can I recommend a Toy Yoda?

@goodguy5 Yeah, I'm tempted to maybe introduce a relaxed version as a house rule, i.e. "if you use your bonus action to cast a spell, you can't cast more than one leveled spell during your turn", but pondering even that version it just feels like it's setting arbitrary restrictions for no good reason.

@Xirema Do you have any sorcerers? Because, honestly, I feel like that rule exists mainly to curtail quickened spells.

@KorvinStarmast How do you like the Rav4? I'm considering replacing my Ford Escape.

3:50 PM
@goodguy5 I do, and I'm going to keep an eye on them. But the player doesn't metagame much, and even so, my general attitude is that Sorcerers are underpowered anyways, so if he wants to blow all his third level spell slots in a single turn to double-fireball a troublesome group of enemies, I say more power to him.

@Xirema 2-3 levels in fighter for a 3rd fireball!

@goodguy5 He does not meet the ability score requirements. Rolled very poorly for dex. =P

@Xirema And doesn't have the Strength either, presumably?

I really feel like the bonus action spells should have been a limitation on quickened spell and not on spellcasting in general.

@JohnP We got a 2014 Limited and cannot be happier with it. 31 MPG on the highway at 65MPH, about 29 at 75, but above that ... heh, well, wind resistance is a thing.

4:02 PM
@KorvinStarmast you and your texas speed limits :)

The reason we got the high end was Mrs S had to have the adjustable/electric seat.
I'd have been happy with a lower level of trim ...

@KorvinStarmast I really think all cars should get HUDs. I got one with my new one and it's really much safer.

@NautArch My saturn has the instrument panel in the middle of the dash, between driver and front pax: great ergonimics, and is a cheaper way to keep head up ...

@NautArch like, the led on the windshield hud?

@goodguy5 yeah. polarized sunglasses make it a little harder to see, but really really like it.

4:06 PM
@Someone_Evil Noooope

@NautArch I had missed the clarification about long rests without sleep. Answer deleted.

@DavidCoffron okeydoke. I still think you've got something there, but totally understand.
Im waiting on Bluemoon to let me know if they plan on adding the bit on DM rulings for SR/LRs during downtime.

@KorvinStarmast Our trim package has electric/leather/heated seats, and most of it's a waste. About the only thing that comes in handy is heated, which is odd in Phoenix, but...

@JohnP my not-great-back uses heated seats year round
just feels good

@JohnP I almost never use our heated seats, because I don't use them if the kid is in the car, out of solidarity for his baby seat not having heated.

4:11 PM
@NautArch Yeah, my wife is a Phx native and really likes them in the winter, and I do use them driving after tournaments. I'd have never made it home this week without it, Nationals was a bit rough. The other kids in my ring were mean this year.

@DavidCoffron I added an answer, but I may delete it. I'm not in love with it and i'm not sure it's really helpful.

@DavidCoffron I think, at the very least, astral projection can result in one falling unconscious without falling asleep or reducing to 0 hit points
Oh, your answers been deleted, hmm, nevermind then

anyone prefer 4e over 5e?

@RandomDudeWithAKnife I think @BESW might, but based on descriptions, I have a feeling I might, too :)
but haven't played it
@RandomDudeWithAKnife WHat issues were gone over during your session zero? Anything a concern?

@NautArch Nothing much, exept we had to look up the monk class because the DM's handbook is missing pages.

4:18 PM
@RandomDudeWithAKnife in 4e Monk is PHB... 3? which drove me nuts

@goodguy5 I'm talking about 5e now

@RandomDudeWithAKnife I figured. I was just complaining.
@RandomDudeWithAKnife missing like a misprint, or missing like torn out?

@RandomDudeWithAKnife @trogdor indicated that he liked 4e while we were playing 5e together on line. I won't speak to which he likes best, but he seems to have a good feel for 4e and he indicated that he found the organization of skills and powers a lot more user friendly in 4e.

@goodguy5 he got it from a garage sale, likely torn out.

@KorvinStarmast From what trogdor and BESW have said (and some others), the focus on combat and tactics really interests me.
@RandomDudeWithAKnife that's one way for folks who really don't like the monk to deal with it.

4:21 PM
@NautArch I think that Joshua Aslan Smith and wax eagle were pretty well versed in 4e, and if you can catch miniman I think he's pretty solid on that system.

@I like taking the monk and a level or 2 in barbarian
Wait, why did I put an @ there?

@KorvinStarmast i'd still really like to try it or 13th age.

@RandomDudeWithAKnife I really enjoyed a lot of 4e (played about 120 hours), specifically the balancing, tactics, and rather excellent job at avoiding having a Fighter go "I attack" and avoiding Linear Fighter : Quadratic Wizard. There are things I disliked, but they were more easily "fixed" than what I dislike in 5e

Wait... what if an elf and an orc had children together? what would the child be?

Yes

4:26 PM
@RandomDudeWithAKnife Half-human.

GcL
@RandomDudeWithAKnife Spanglish cutlery. elf + orc = El Fork. A very dangerous aberration hunter. Slayer of slaads.

@RandomDudeWithAKnife I don't think that particular hybrid is discussed. lemme dig for it.

Warforged can have kids, right?

GcL
@RandomDudeWithAKnife Nope.

Q: Compatibility of races

Richard YoungTwo of the races you're allowed to use in D&D are half-elf and half-orc. My first character was a half-elf. GcL
@RandomDudeWithAKnife Treaty of Thranehold required dismantling the forges that create warforged. Some good story hooks for secret forges still existing hidden by house Cannith. Also, there's a novel that includes evidence that warforged may have been created on Xen'Drik prior to House Cannith "inventing" them.

@Sdjz Wow, strong genes. So I guess for @RandomDudeWithAKnife, the offspring would either be an orc or half-orc.

4:33 PM
Meanwhile IIRC, according to Xanathar's two Tieflings don't produce anything?
I wonder why "both parents were tieflings" isn't listed. — mdrichey Nov 12 '19 at 20:36

GcL
@Medix2 I think that's a bit harsh. I've found them to be just as industrious as any other humanoid species. On the other hand, they rarely need to screw in light bulbs on account of darkvision, so maybe that's how that dirty rumor started.

How many humans does it take to screw in a lightbulb

@RandomDudeWithAKnife they'll have to hold a meeting first. I'll let you know the road map in 3-5 business weeks.

Whatever minimum non-zero percent human one person can be so uh... 1/2^k with k arbitrarily large

none, they don't have darkvision

GcL
4:37 PM
@RandomDudeWithAKnife At least two. One to state the action and the other to narrate the result.

@RandomDudeWithAKnife two, but how did they fit inside the light bulb in the first place?
(Guessing a spell or a potion was involved, or a Rick Moranis movie ...)

GcL
@KorvinStarmast Coastal folk have been making houses out of them for centuries.

@KorvinStarmast wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

@KorvinStarmast isn't that comment about half-orcs/half-elves actually the OP's question?

4:44 PM
@goodguy5 it's a very old joke ...

@NautArch I'm really not sure how that comment isn't answered in the answer itself since it explicitly mentions Dwarf

@KorvinStarmast Nothing like a Rick Moranis movie to set the mood ;-)

@NautArch Or rather, is an Elf not just a "non-Orc humanoid"?

@Medix2 It's because tieflings are like dipoles, they're repelled from each other by the electromagnetic interaction.
@GcL Doesn't mean they can't adopt a baby goat or two.
Are you saying my warforged shepherd is non-canon?

GcL
@Yuuki I feel like a sheep cannon is something Wallace and Gromit tried.

4:55 PM
@GcL "A unique twist on the 1812 Overture was heard that day"

Hmm. Could a Rogue/Druid multiclass cast magic stone, use a sling to launch said stones, and get sneak attack damage on a hit in addition to the 1d6+WIS?

@Medix2 to an orc? Probably.
Or just meat

@Yuuki I believe so, the sling qualifies as a ranged weapon for sneak attack

Are slings one-handed weapons?

@Yuuki They do not have the two-handed property, so yes

5:00 PM
Could you TWF slings and launch two of your magic stones for 2x 1d6+WIS?
Trying to decide whether I just dip 1 level Druid for magic stone or whether dip 2 levels to get Wild Shape.

If you have Dual Wielder, then I think so... we're getting very close to "Ask it on main"

And then the rest in Rogue for sneak attack progression.

Pick it up with magic initiate?

Sure if it's a table that allows feats. But having a Druid level or two would definitely make sense for a shepherd.

@Yuuki I believe TWF requires taking the Attack action, which you might not be doing

5:07 PM
Also slings are weirdly not light weapons?

Q: Are abbreviations prefered?

GhostshipI was reading this Question, and notice there are ton of abbreviations in it. As someone not super familiar with every released book for 5E, it made the question hard to read and I had to google a few of them to figure out what they all mean. I was gonna edit in the full titles of the books, bu...

So you need the Dual Wielder feat to do TWF.

@Medix2 You are taking the attack action when attacking with the sling

@Someone_Evil Maybe. It's not exactly a well-defined spell. I would personally say that I'm unsure
But doesn't TWF require melee weapons?

so they may or may not have covered dual wielding crossbows but with typical lack of foresight, forgot to cover slings

5:16 PM
@Yuuki I don't exactly follow since dual-wielding ≠ TWF

@Medix2 There's a feat (Crossbow Expert) that may or may not allow you to dual-wield crossbows since technically you can't with TWF.
But obviously, Crossbow Expert is crossbow-specific.

But it's still not using TWF? am I missing something?

The relevance is "yes, you can't TWF ranged weapons, but here's something you can do to accomplish that with crossbows".
So the damage from magic stone is magical since the source is a spell, even if you're launching the pebble from a mundane sling. What about the sneak attack damage? Would that also be magical?

sneak attack damage is the same kind of damage as the normal damage the attack does
so, yes, if the attack is already doing magical damage, the sneak attack damage is correspondingly magical and overcomes damage resistance appropriately

6
Q: Can Sneak Attack deal magical damage?

Question is there any action economy difference between using a focus over a component pouch besides in such instances as MC or holy symbols on shields? One of my players is convinced they need to to drawn and stowed.

@kent Sorry, what's MC?

@MarkWells Molten Core, it's a 40-man raid in WoW.

@kent System in question?

5e. And multiclassing

@Yuuki Besides that, I meant

5:46 PM
Why would they need to be stowed? And don't you get a free interaction with an item in 5e?

@kent Generally you do have to hold a focus in your hand. I'm not sure what you mean by "besides in such instances as MC", though?

Also, just like attacking with a bow requires drawing an arrow (from a quiver or whatever), you could argue that casting a spell requires drawing a focus and thus the drawing and stowing is including (or assumed) in taking the action.

@MarkWells I was trying not to refer to benefit a component pouch might provide to someone multiclassed as different types of spellcasters
My question was whether it's like @Yuuki described. Or it takes an item interaction

I don't think it takes an item interaction.

@Yuuki Object interactions are normally things "included in taking the action". Attacking with a sword requires drawing the sword, and that's an object interaction.

6:00 PM
@Carcer I'm not really sure how to put this, but I'm unsure that grammar policing is necessary or even remotely helpful, least of all mandatory (granted I'm particularly against prescriptive grammar, I'm a linguist)

@MarkWells I don't know how legal Crawford is this days but he has said before using a component pouch does not require an object interaction

@kent We have a question on that somewhere, and it came to the same conclusion

if I'm ever playing at Crawford's table I'll be sure to remember that

@Yuuki they have the ammunition property, though.

@MarkWells well yes. And any time you are at your table and casting two material spells in a turn
You only get one free item interaction a turn. Do you restrict your players to one spell with a material component a turn ?

6:03 PM
but one of the problems with relying on his off-the-cuff remarks is that they lack context. like, was he talking about a component pouch that's already in your hand, and you just need to pull out the component itself? or one that's hooked on your belt for easy access? or one that's in a waterproof pouch inside your backpack which has been swallowed by a purple worm?

@kent How does your table generally handle components and casting?

Q: If a reaction spell has material components, do I already need to be holding them to cast it?

Ryan C. ThompsonSome spells that are cast with a reaction, such as Feather Fall, require material components. Suppose I am using a component pouch instead of a focus, but I'm not currently holding a small feather. If a trap door opens under the party, am I able to quickly reach for the feather in my pouch as par...

If getting items from a pouch required an object interaction then reaction spells with material components would be infeasible

But in general, it's not so much the 'free object interaction' that's being used, but that you just need a hand free to interact. So if you're casting more than one spell in a turn, that's not a problem.

@kent If you're casting two spells using a focus, you draw the focus (once), cast the spell, cast the other spell, and you're now holding a focus.
If you're using a component pouch, same thing, because I consider pulling the component from the pouch to be part of using the material component

6:09 PM
That contradicts the answer naut just linked

how so?

You wouldn't have the component pouch in hand when you instantly fell
So having it in reach is meaningless.
Unless you are implying you can perform an item interaction before instantly falling 500 feet to pick up the component pouch

I don't think it needs to be in your hand, just where you can reach it.

And if the component pouch had to be in your hand. Within reach would also be meaningless

If you left the component pouch inside your pack then your mistake.

6:16 PM
@kent naut I ;) But I also don't think it contradicts. You just need a free hand - it doesn't use your object interaction.

@NautArch Mark seems to be saying it does

But you can't have a free hand if the pouch is in it

@kent The pouch is on your belt. YOu're just briefly reaching into touch the component.
And i'll wait for @MarkWells to confirm, but I think he's in agreement.

Yes but Mark is saying you are picking it up with your hands
Ahh he might be referring to foci

hello

6:19 PM
Welcome back, Gwideon

i'm surprised people remember me

@kent Technically, the focus doesn't have to be in your hand, either. You just need to touch it.
@Gwideon howdy! Welcome back :)
We remember...everyone.

@Gwideon I remember most things.

@NautArch that's what we are discussing

And not just because everything is permanent here.

6:21 PM
sorry for disappearing for such a long time

you're under no obligation to appear on command

yeah i guess

@kent interesting. Chapter 10 says "hold the focus" but I always thought it was "present" or something like that.
That does imply it needs to be in your hand. Maybe I"m thinking of cleric...

@MarkWells if I understand you correctly you are saying foci/component don't need an item interaction to pick up as part of a reaction spell but they do need one to put down?

@kent Holy SYmbol (for paladins/clerics) says "To use the symbol in this way, the caster must hold it in hand, wear it visibly, or bear it on a shield."
so it looks like that for an arcane focus, it does have to be in your hand RAW.
@kent If you're playing RAW and using an arcane focus, you need it in your hands to cast a material component required spell.

6:24 PM
@NautArch that's a mess because by compendium material component must be touched. Wearing it visibly is pointless for a sword shield cleric

@kent ?

I don't like holy symbols.
By raw you can cast as sword + emblazoned shield, or sword + focus in hand, but sword + sword +worn visibly is purposeless

@kent For an arcane focus, you'd need to hold it. If it's already exposed, I'd say you can put a hand on it as part of casting the spell. If it's stowed in any way, then you'd need to draw it first

anyways how is everyone

@kent Unless you're using a two-handed weapon. IN which case, you need that.

6:28 PM
Ahhhhhhhhy
That's what it's for

Although I guess you could always just release a hand, but it seems like holy symbols have a lot more flexibility than arcane focus.
And clearly my DM didn't read/understand/care about the RAW when they gave me a monocle as an arcane focus.

You would have to release a hand. The foci has to be touched

@kent technically, it must held.

If you were holding thing two handed wouldn't casting deny you oa even with the necklace
Release grip. Touch symbol. Free hand. Can't regrip.

You can regrip for free maybe

Q: Can you cast spells with a Somatic component if you're holding a two-handed weapon?

ShalvenayI have a halfling cleric of Bahamut who wears his holy symbol as an amulet around his neck as a spellcasting focus (so material components are not an issue). However, as per this question, this does not cover the Somatic component of any spells he casts. He also wields a light crossbow as his on...

FYI, my table(s) usually just handwave this stuff. Unless there's a material component cost.
But otherwise, casters gonna cast.

Q: Does switching between using a versatile weapon one-handed to two-handed cost anything with regards to the action economy?

NathanSThe versatile weapon property says (PHB, p. 147): Versatile. This weapon can be used with one or two hands. A damage value in parentheses appears with the property–the damage when the weapon is used with two hands to make a melee attack. A weapon with the versatile property, such as a longs...

So touching the focus or component is part of the casting of the spell. Dropping/ungriping is a free action. Then grabbing rhe two handed weapon is the free item interaction. You're right @NautArch maybe hand waving is best.
Although a monocle made from a transparent gem is technically a focus :)

@kent usually dropping something is a null action. Doesn't cost anything.
@kent but you're not holding it.
There's a lot of minutiae you can get into with casting requirements. But I'm not sure it actually improves anything unless your table is really interested in it. Sort of like tracking ammo/rations/etc.

6:55 PM
@NautArch you are probably right. I'll just limit to whether they have free hands and allow that one player do to his complicated tying a druidic focus to his wrist.

switching from one to two hands on a thing or vice versa has generally been ruled as having no action economy cost, as far as I've seen. Unofficial Crawford tweet ruled the same way

@kent As long as what they're doing makes narrative sense, I see no big deal about it. My DM had previously allowed me to tattoo my holy symbol as a paladin on myself visibly. Removed that whole need, but it did make me very well known. I couldn't exactly hide who I was when my holy symbol is tattooed on my face.

But I do like @MarkWells distinction that stowed items cannot be accessed without an item interaction. It makes casting stealth casting in pockets impossible.
Wait you were a paladin and arcane class?
Were you a pallock with a tattoo and monocle? !
