6:35 AM
@trogdor It gets on levels around 2 minutes

levels?

Levels of weird

7:00 AM
oh

3 hours later…
10:07 AM
an now, the "horror of the week" award goes to.....

Content warning for: biological essentialism.

I don't even know where to start to rant about why this is pure evil.

10:24 AM
ugh wtf
that's,... wtf

@trogdor I know, trogdor. I know. I couldn't believe it at first when I read that but apparently it is true.

I can't say that I find the idea of X-safe/Y-free spaces new, but the way they present it follows Poe's Law.

10:44 AM
and the site.....
it greets you with this line:
> giggle: the collective noun for a group of girls
now, as you probably know, English is not my first language, so I had to check.
Verb: giggle (third-person singular simple present giggles, present participle giggling, simple past and past participle giggled)
  1. To laugh gently or in a high-pitched voice; to laugh in a silly or giddy way.
  2. The jokes had them giggling like little girls all evening.
Noun: giggle (plural giggles)
  1. A high-pitched, silly laugh.
  2. (informal) Fun; an amusing episode.
  3. We put itching powder down his shirt for giggles.
  4. The women thought it would be quite a giggle to have a strippergram at the bride's hen party.
no mention of that meaning.
So I can only assume they crafted the meaning because obviously
> female => girly => unicorns => "high-pitched girly laughter"

I mean, I don't think that's nearly as troubling as the blurb above
but wtv
either way it's already got a black mark in my book

@Derpy there's also the similarly unflattering alternative of "gaggle of geese -> giggle of girls"

10:59 AM
@trogdor yep, that I agree with. What I mean is that based on the site there seem to be no doubt that the "jokes" they are trying to make aren't exactly fitting for the intent they claim to have.
Seem unrespectful at best.

there are a few problems embedded into the idea
:/

more like all the problems
communism springs to mind :)

11:14 AM
I read the founder's replies to tweets linked from this Verge article, and it was clear she just did not get it (perhaps willfully so): theverge.com/2020/2/7/21128236/…
@Derpy I assume it's a mishmash of the verb "giggle" and the noun "gaggle" which is a collective noun for geese (at least) and by extension any group/gathering of creatures or things

they could've called it joinamurder.com instead

@V2Blast which is worse.

@AndrasDeak That would attract a different audience - I'm sure many corvid fans would do it in a heartbeat, judging from the posts I've seen on /r/crows.

@V2Blast yes, seen that, including the "Finally the final test" ironic message they got. Maybe a bit harsh, but based on the replies they gave it was well deserved imho.

11:33 AM
@vicky_molokh awww. crows >> geese
they are tied with ducks, though

12:30 PM
@AndrasDeak no ducks are jerks
corvids are the superior birb

Tonight's dinner is my usual Friday night spicy lemon tuna, this time with okra fried in cornmeal, served together on brown rice.

re, birds: there's still a couple of hours of daylight if you want to gawk at them luontolive.wwf.fi/talvilintu

1:06 PM
@kviiri nice, kiitos. I used to watch the Estonian ones but they might no longer be available eenet.ee/EENet/kaamerad
Is that grammatically correct? "might not be available anymore".

@AndrasDeak both forms are correct
@Derpy a trans chat i'm in discovered this and it's just ... so many levels of completely awful. Like, even just considering cisgender people it's awful. It's basically beauty eugenics. The theory behind it is also completely wrongheaded. You can't do this thing.

1:23 PM
@doppelgreener thanks!

@doppelgreener As I said in another room, even IF one was willing to give them the benefice of doubt that some of the proposed idea could work (carpooling for girls only maybe could help prevent some bad incidents/abuse? I'm not even sure) the execution is weird at best. More realistically just horrible.

@AndrasDeak They'll hopefully be back in Summer
@AndrasDeak I'll be sure to hit you up when our Summer-time webcams come online :)

I used to watch the winter feeding ground :) Listening to boars and deer munch
@kviiri please do, the wife is a huge bird fan (I'm more of a quadruped person myself)

@AndrasDeak I think last Summer we had deer, wolverine and... hmm, have to check
on the same page actually
Saimaa ringed seal!
Ultra rare

1:38 PM
... you forgot Dark Magician Girl
Or one of the thousand variants.

@kviiri oooh, wolverines always sound so exotic to me
Oh, there are (rein?)deer on the deer cam as we speak. Awesome!
I'm an idiot :D

Yeah, you get a tiny highlight reel from the non-live ones
They'll hopefully be back for Summer

I got too excited and didn't notice. In my defence I hadn't switched to English yet ;)
I spent a lot of time watching Okeanos Explorer deep sea dives live last year

Oh yeah sorry, forgot to link the English site

I was sure there was an English version even without looking for the button, it wasn't an issue at all.

1:57 PM
@Derpy it's absolutely not about something like safety or merely identifying whether you're female: that's already a solved problem that involves identity papers and background checks. there is no use case for this for which the theory makes sense, except for that the people behind it are offensively wrongheaded, incompetent, and/or evil in some combination.

Or they just think they've found a niche they can monetize.
might be a subclass of evil depending on your disposition

2:19 PM
also, I'd be surprised if the verification isn't trivially defeatable by any malicious actor using a picture of someone else.

Or a cat
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Exchange Chat, 3 hours ago, by Journeyman Geek
someone tried a picture of their cat
Allegedly

mm

@AndrasDeak But was the cat female, feminine, both or neither, that's the big question!

anyway, it's doomed to fail as a social media network and will largely be an exercise in extracting user data to sell to advertisers

It was definitely feline giggly
@Carcer so...a social network

2:46 PM
@doppelgreener yep, that's why I said IF. I am not sure there is any good intent there, I just said that maybe some of the general ideas could work done in a different way.
Female students for example could benefit from a simple way to find other female roommates. But not with an app that "we do facial scan to ensure your new roommate is an actual female and not an evil guy pretending to be a female"

you've got to filter out 50-year-old truck drivers somehow

@AndrasDeak A short bit of internet lore I heard ages ago: "As a kid, I thought cats are just girl dogs. Later, I learned that they were just stupid dogs. Until dad taught me dogs are just stupid cats."
There's a linguistic twist to that as well, as the Finnish words for "dog" and "male" (of non-human animals) are very close to each other

@kviiri That reminds me: for us, a towel is a masculine shotgun and vice versa. (Not really, but the morphology looks as if that's true.)

3:02 PM
> God has made the cat to give man the pleasure of caressing the tiger

2 hours later…
4:58 PM
@kviiri Cats are stupid cats.

6 hours later…
10:50 PM
@doppelgreener "Skeletor" is trending on Twitter. I blame you. :P
(It's actually because Mark Hamill was announced as the voice of Skeletor in the new Netflix animated He-Man: Masters of the Universe series)

11:20 PM
@V2Blast that's a superb choice

11:48 PM
indeed
