6:24 AM
@Ælis It that reassures you, a colleague I came out to pretty early when I arrived in my company needed my help for troubleshooting yesterday and when I found the bug, he said "oof, I'm so autistic!" (to mean I'm stupid). Well... No, because if you were, you'd have found the bug? :p

6:42 AM
@Ælis Hm, I am not sure. The author has a different view of what the term 'high functioning' is coined by. Nonetheless I still find it problematic for a different reason. When ever I describe myself as high functioning, I feel like I am discriminating someone... like I want to point out, that I am different from the perceived view of what autism is about.
I do it in such situation sometimes. But in that situations I'd rather just be rude. I think what you are asking about is "stimming" isn't it? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stimming )
My behavior in regards of stimming is often very... extrem ^^ so yeah scratching myself... Or what i figured to help (for me), too but being less obvious to others, is making a fist and pushing my finger nails into my palm. ^^
And.... Hello everyone :)

Q: Provider issues

Sky T.I’m a 20 year old who recently got a new provider in a new city I moved to. And right off the bat my provider made me feel uncomfortable the first appointment with getting me right on birth control, (implant in arm) and how she felt happier if I chose that, then the pills. And I’m very pressured ...

6:59 AM
@Ælis What you could do is, experimenting with other ways of stimming, too. Pain works well, cause it is an very easy controllable stimulu. The advantage of pain is, others generally don't really notice that. But flexing muscles or doing rapid repeating movements should do the same job. I could also imaging an external repeating stimuli might work quite well. like an heavy vibrating object or an electric impulse muscle stimulator you could carry in your pocket.
Yeah well... so far what popped into my head about that ^^
About the external stimuli, being said, haven't tried that myself, yet. So it is just an idea.
@Tinkeringbell Hahahaha, just aggression? Or maybe stimming, too? :D xP

And maybe you should tag the country you are in. As that might (not sure about it) limit the answers and help figuring if "Just look for a different doc" as a bottom line might be a valid answer or not. — dhein 2 mins ago

@dhein Yeah, whe talked about that two? days ago. I really dislike using it too because it feels like 1) I'm being rude and 2) I'm lying

@Ælis Hmmm, can't remember having had ever talked about it before with someone. So not too sure it was me.

7:55 AM
@dhein Oh no, I meat that people in here talked about it (mostly Rain and me). You weren't here indeed ^^

Ahhhh I see :)

Morning! well, my morning was kinda bad
Overslept and catched an Uber :\

@CaldeiraG what happened? :/

I still got in time for work \o/ but i'm tired

:(

8:00 AM
the person driving was 10/10 though so that cheered me up a bit

@dhein Just aggression ;)

we can't rate drivers here nor see our rating

8:16 AM
@CaldeiraG Really?

8:35 AM
@avazula I hate it when people do that, I'm sorry :/

@Ælis That's okay ;) I'm used to it. I know they don't mean bad.

@avazula The fact that they don't mean bad makes it even worse IMO
Also, yesterday, I had to explain to my family what "stimming" was. It "great" to see how uninformed they are...

@Ælis You mean stimming?

@avazula Yes ><

:(
I can't say I'm surprised
but it's still sad yea

8:39 AM
@Tinkeringbell you can rate drivers afterall Source

Oh, good :)

I shouldn't be surprised either. But yeah, I would rather not know how uninform they are :/

@Ælis What you mean by that uniforming part? :o

@dhein Apparently, I'm unable to write anything correctly this morning >< I meant "uninformed"

That article is behind a soft-paywall tho because most of what I need is there :p

Q: How to non-rudely deal with wittering

Hey look who's dropping by ;) How's life, kscherrer? :D

10:32 AM
Morning

@Belle Hello :)

Bleeeeeeergh I feel sick.

@Tinkeringbell I wanted to yell "Cashbeeee" but they're dropping by so rarely I don't wanna scare them :p

@Belle Oh :( What's happening?

I forgot I needed to get a new hormone thing. It's been 6 years and I needed to replace it after 5. I didn't realize it has been so long.

10:37 AM
@Tinkeringbell hey ho @Tink
@avazula you cannot scare me
hi all

@kscherrer Challenge accepted ...

aaaah

:D

@kscherrer Hello Kscherrer :)

I get muscle spasms because of a hormone imbalance or something. I don't really understand. The doctor just gave me extra hormones to balance it again and they stopped.

10:40 AM
@Ælis hey Aelis!

@Belle Arf, that doesn't sounds fun :/ It's a good thing though that I have an reliable way to stop it

Hi @kscherrer. How are you?

@Belle Hey Belle I am good. We havent met, have we? Sorry to hear about your bad morning

@kscherrer We have. It was a pretty long time ago :P When you were still Cashbee.

oh. sorry I don't think I remember. unless you are a puppet of tinkeringbell?

10:44 AM
I think it's been over a year ago, so I don't blame you for not remembering

@kscherrer Belle us to have a green avatar, in case that helps

@kscherrer Belle has been around as a green? gravatar, if that helps :P
Jinxed...

Hehe :p

haha. now i can only think of doppelgreener

10:46 AM
Time to give up ;)

Oh you dug up an old question from me? XD

(I'm gonna stop digging now)

nice digging skills. I think I remember slightly now ;)

@Belle Yep, because the chat avatar doesn't change when it's posted by extrovertedMainMan ^^

btw I know a great knock knock joke but someone else has to start it

@kscherrer Just me

@Belle just me who?

I'm confused now XD

I love that joke
I never had a joke in mind in the first place, I made you tell me a joke

I just found this picture again (thanks to the digging). It's so cute, it surely deserved to be posted twice:

@Ælis I spotted your Java essence with that camelCase ...
It'd have been extroverted_main_man to me :p

(oh man, I should be careful ... y'all are using Java in here ...)

10:53 AM

I don't use Java. I'm TypeScript. Which is camelCase too.
Although I also use C#, which uses PascalCase, so I'm in a constant inner conflict

haha
@kscherrer how's life been treating you?

darn, that's wonderful news :D

I am fine by the way.

@AJ didn't you use to post random jokes in this chat?
then again, didnt we all? :D

@kscherrer Well, I had posted two yesterday. Read them here and here

@avazula yep :p
thanks Oxford :) 'atual' is current in Portuguese so i got confused for a sec
glad i'm not the only one who makes that mistake :p

@CaldeiraG 'actueel' can be 'current' in Dutch too...

in german too, in french too

@CaldeiraG and 'actuel' is 'current' in French

english is the weird one, not you

@Belle O.o I tell the same joke to my spouse and she'd burst into laughter. Of course, I say that in my native language which sounds more catchy cause I don't have to translate it.

The tourist, unimpressed, says "6 years? We can build something like this in 6 months."
The cab driver got a bit upset at the obvious insult, but kept quiet. Next he took him to The Red Fort. He said " This is the Red Fort. It was built by the Mughals in 5 years!"
Unimpressed again, the tourist said "5 long years? We can build this easily in 3 months."

yaaaawn

Hi, I thought it would be nice to update you with the outcome of the talk with the disabled girl.
well, when I told her I would like to meet for a talk, she asked why and what about I wanna talk. So I roughly explained her that I thought about all this and that she deserves an honest answer but that I would like to talk in person about the details.
She then replied that she got engaged with an other guy and that she is happy and that there is no need from her side for a talk and that she wants to cut contact with me.

Work is boring :(
@undefined Oof, am I lucky I posted that yawn when I did :P

aw @Tinkeringbell yes, my work is boring too but only 1h 24 minutes to go for me :)

A bit more here, 2,5 hours :)

but tomorrow I have a big teeth surgery and I'm kinda scared about it :/

1:22 PM
Are you getting teeth pulled? Or something else?

both

@undefined Good luck! Hopefully everything's gonna be okay :)

thank you avazula :)

:)

1:22 PM
@avazula Hey, you changed!
I like it :)

yup
Thanks! :)

but I'm getting a nice sedation the doc said
so I hope it will be okay but I'm scared of the sedation too :o it'll be my very first one

Yep, the actual work... well you usually don't feel it ;) It's the bit after the surgery when the sedation wears off, that's the worst. So, in advice: Take some pain killers before you actually need them.
(But not before the surgery, of course!)
Ask your surgeon when would be appropriate ;)

ya not before :o
I already bought a lot of cool packs and frozen fruits and I have many pain killers at home

@undefined also, local anestetics are annoying.
you can't feel half your face :D

1:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek Sedation is a bit more than that, sounds to me like they're going to knock undefined out for an undefined amount of time ;)

@Tinkeringbell oh and after that
But I've never gone under yet
so no idea about that

@JourneymanGeek I had it last week, but I couldn't feel my whole face because I got local anesthetics everywhere in the mouth because doc had to clean everything in preparation for the surgery

Oof, yeah, two sides of your face under local is bad... I had that when they did my wisdom teeth. Felt like I couldn't swallow (fun fact: I could. Nurse had to convince me though XD)

@Tinkeringbell not completely knocked out. its like being half asleep. They inject some kind of benzodiazepine

1:29 PM
@undefined Oh? Never really heard of that one... is that the one then where all those funny videos come from, from people that say funny stuff?

yaaa I felt like I couldn't breath and swallow too but it all works normal, of course
@Tinkeringbell haha yes I think so. I have to pay extra cash for that thing

I think I'm getting a whiff of American 'health care' here? :P

but its not as invasive than a complete knock out and better than laughing gas

I've still got a picture of myself looking like an absolute derp with half a smile on my face because the other half was numb

Germany here. but if you want better than minimum healthcare here, you have to pay for everything extra too, despite the huge amount they cut from your salary every month
@Belle haha aw I bet you still looked cute :)

1:34 PM
@undefined Oof. At least I can just decide to pay extra up front (higher insurance premiums means more stuff will be refunded)...

@Tinkeringbell are you from the USA, may I ask?

@undefined Nope, Netherlands. We're neighbours ;)
Stay on your side of the line though :P

ohh
hello neighbor :D
my dad is going to pick me up from the doc tomorrow. thats pretty kind of him :)

I kinda guess he has to, you'd be too easy to kidnap :P

I live in Zeeland, aka spare-Germany :)
Our population is at least 70% German tourists

1:37 PM
aw yes, and the doc even said pick up is required because of the medication

Yeah... I think you'd get arrested for DUI if you'd try to get yourself home... or something like public intoxication XD

Hello @NikolajLangbergGustafsson! Welcome to the Awkward Silence :)

@Belle ow Zeeland looks pretty :)
haha yes, could happen, I guess. so luckily dad will come

Zeeland is pretty... spent some very good holidays there :)
I like being near the sea.

Speaking of getting arrested for public intoxication: my fiancé got arrested for that when he was walking home after getting prescribed glasses. He has pretty bad astigmatism, which means the world is very wonky to him. With the glasses, the world went from wonky to straight, which is just as disorienting as being drunk. Guess the officers thought he was drunk. They brought him home safely when the situation was cleared up.

1:49 PM

oh @ava you have a new ava
It looks cold, but that might just be because I just walked in to the office and it's about -6C here

ava-kedabra? :D puff of blue smoke :D

@undefined nice to hear your update, the problem really did solve itself :)
@avazula you're blue now :o
i can't understand what python wants now, the python is on the path and the scripts folder as well but it says 'no such file' :(

@Belle haha poor guy but also a bit funny
@CaldeiraG yeah, luckily, I guess

2:04 PM
@CaldeiraG So, I guess it wants a file then? :P

@Tinkeringbell the file is there :p

Apparently not :P
Caching?

@CaldeiraG I'm blue dabadee dabada ...
@Tinkeringbell @Cal shouldiblamecaching.com

@avazula Hello blue ava. Are you new around here? :P

@Ælis pretty much yes! This place looks nice!

2:06 PM
@Tinkeringbell Well i opened a new shell just now, no dice

@avazula I really, really learned about that song for the first time because someone was singing 'if I were green I would die' and I believed that were the lyrics for years... It's quite disappointing it's just dabadee dabada :P

@Tinkeringbell xD

@avazula Just beware of the parrot, she sometimes bites

@Tinkeringbell D: that is indeed so much cooler! Now I'm disappointed. We should do a mashup!
@Mithical Eeeek!

What do you think about this font? jetbrains.com/lp/mono

2:10 PM
@Ælis Mmh... nah? :/

@JourneymanGeek likes it, I think? I thought I saw him tweet about it :)

it's alright, don't think i would use it

@avazula One of my coworker saw the "<=" and said that the creator should be put into jail for it x)

@Ælis oh

@Ælis I do like that font

2:12 PM
It looks dyslexic friendly
Not totally sold on the extra height, and I need to try it to tell

My favourite font is open sans

I'm a fan of the "source" family of fonts

@Belle I was hoping you were going to say Comic Sans :p

but I just saw the < = etc too, thats weird. a font shouldn't do that

@JourneymanGeek I like dyslexic friendly stuff, but I'm really not sold on the "changing of symbol" part

2:13 PM
@CaldeiraG ... I know a guy who uses that cause its easier to read
@Ælis oh the broader philosophy

@undefined Yeah, exactely that

@CaldeiraG That's my second favourite. I write all my official documents in it.

Each and every charecter being distinct
so O and 0 and i and l and 1

@Belle Cool :p

Better yet if it lacks lateral symmetry with say d and b

2:15 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. I don't like when I have a hard time seeing the difference between "l" and "I"

I use Menlo (that was shipped with my current theme). I think it's pretty good.

I had a long twitter rant on this :D

@JourneymanGeek You are right to rant. Every font should be dyslexic friendly

Just two days ago, a friend and I trolled a twitch chat by saying the command "!gambIe aII" didn't work. But it uses a font in which the I and l look the same, so a couple high-points users tried it afterwards and lost all their points.

2:17 PM
@Belle Oo

@Belle Isn't that kinda mean?

x)

Bad typography breaks my brain :D

@JourneymanGeek I read "Canno" too. Then I realize it was suppose to be "Camino" and I had a hard time seeing it

yup
and I went "is it just me?"

2:20 PM
@Tinkeringbell I never said I'm not mean x)

@CaldeiraG area51.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/29981/… > Seems like people are at least keeping eyes out...
But it would make sense to me that if SE changed the requirements for Area51 sites (I think you now have to have some proof of your community already existing somewhere), that asking people have already 200 rep somewhere is a bit... harsh.

well, he went ahead and comment it to Tim

I'm not sure those kinds of pings work ;)
Oh wait... well... maybe it takes more than 2 days to formulate the response...

well that could be it :p

@CaldeiraG thanks, I hope so too :)

@CaldeiraG Have you already committed? ;)

@Pyritie : according to OP's first paragraph, and it's phrasing (as I read it), I'd say that it sounds like more than just casual small talk. It's more like a continuous rant that's bothering OP. People seem to do more than talk, they complain and vent, I'd say... — OldPadawan 2 mins ago

@Tinkeringbell No idea :o

If you aren't active on the site, you won't be able to re-use the commitment until the end of the public beta, or until six months after the beta began." - Area 51 FAQ
In honest words, i don't really get it

3:09 PM
Ohh, that's good to know, thank you! I didn't know Area 51 had a FAQ.
You commit to writing 10 posts (questions or answers) on that site during private beta.
If you don't, you'll have to wait until the end of public beta (so, graduation) before you can commit to a new site.

ah wow

If graduating takes longer than 6 months, you can commit to another site only after those 6 months are up.

oh i see

Lankers1I have a colleague at work who must have no sense of smell or has no consideration for others nasal glands because he continues to microwave mackerel despite furious protests from his peers. @avazula I hope not... but you never know until you ask ;)...

@ExtrovertedMainMan When I was an intern on my local court, there was always this security guy that only buys cooked food from the supermarket. Sometimes just the smell of it was very intense and it was a small room
I feel their frustation

Hehe. I like this room. I'm allowed to just be me here. Usually, when people know me a little bit, they tend to either show pity or dismissal. Here, I've experienced neither, I actually feel like I'm fine the way I am, the good and the bad.

3:23 PM
@ExtrovertedMainMan So, we're going from 'telling to stop' and 'sabotaging the microwave' to 'ask politely' ... yeah, that's the correct order :P

@Tinkeringbell Desperate circumstances require desperate measures

@Belle You have no idea how grateful I am that you feel that way. I'm so glad this can be a safe space for people ...

@Belle Oh, true... I left a comment asking for more details/clarity :)

work is almost over now for today. I think I would be online until early February.
so take care all of you :)

@scohe001 oh no :(

thanks avazula, I really need that
good bye

Bye!
@scohe001 What race car do you drive?

Ooh you're looking smokey today @Ava

@scohe001 Right? I'm on fire!

@avazula Lol it's just an old 2008 Honda. No race car for this miser :p
@avazula oh no! You should probably get that checked out. I've heard it's not good for airplanes to be on fire

3:38 PM
@scohe001 haha. We all have to start somewhere... I'd still have my old Renault if the engine wasn't stopping unexpectedly all the time :p
@scohe001 That's okay, I'm a bee
Does that make me ... a firefly?

@avazula oh this is my third car lol I just don't feel like new cars are ever worth it for the money
@avazula ooh that makes more sense! I think if all fireflies left a smoke trail wherever they flew, they'd be a lot more awesome lol

@scohe001 Amen! Mine isn't that old but I didn't buy it fresh new either
@scohe001 That's really inconvenient when you're running away because there are some bad guys after you

@avazula Ooh is that what you're doing? So your smoke is more like Smoke and Mirrors?

@scohe001 More like this kind of Smoke and Mirrors

@scohe001 That's one of the many reasons I'm glad I don't have to drive

3:45 PM
@avazula ooh that one is definitely more spicy

@scohe001 Well that sucks :(

@Rainbacon driving is absolutely a blessing and a curse

@scohe001 The problem with used cars is that the problems that may not affect the car now will affect later and that scares me quite a bit. Of course no one would say there's a problem with the car if it's still driveable
My parents, before we got our current cars had used ones, a '92 Ford Fiesta, a '98 Honda Civic, the Ford eventually broke and we traded for a 2001 Ford Puma from the Ford car dealership so in quite good condition. Guess what, in 5 years or so something on the clutch broke and would could a large amount to repair so we traded for a new 2017 Fiesta :p
The honda civic we eventually traded for a 2015 Ford Tourneo Courier, new
Don't count on me on what mileage it had because i don't have a clue :p

I know what you mean, @CaldeiraG :( The car I bought secondhand had an engine problem that was caused by a manufacturing mistake. Luckily I still had warranty.

@scohe001 Yeah, public transit is the same way. Sometimes the trains run well, and sometimes a problem on a different line than you are taking stops the entire system

My 6 year old car has a 1 year old engine :P

@Belle :(

@CaldeiraG that's true. There is some risk and there needs to be a solid foundation of trust with your mechanic that's checking stuff out before you buy. But it's hard for me to bear the thought of losing thousands of dollars just from driving a new car off the lot
@Rainbacon yeesh. That'd be super duper upsetting too. I guess you just have to live planning to be super early everywhere?

@scohe001 That Ford Puma came from their dealership so I would think it was fine but it failed. And it was not a very common car (1997-2002)
But i guess you're right on that too
On the 2015 one, the 4 tires were replaced (mostly because of usage) but that's it for now
I eventually need to know how to change tires :p

Hmm yea that's the other thing. The not very common cars are cool and fun, but those are the ones that'll cost you the most. Easier to go with the popular stuff that everyone has :p

Time to confuse everyone with a new picture
@scohe001 Yeah... I should've gone with a Honda Civic
My car is a special edition that was never for sale in my country, it's imported

@scohe001 yea, my dad loved it though

Q: Merging technical sites with Stack Overflow

Resistance Is FutileListening to the recent podcast A chat with our CEO about the future of our company and community it seems that merging other SE technical sites with Stack Overflow is imminent. That was also vaguely hinted in most recent Survey What does “Should we add technical Q&A sites like Server Fault, Sup...

bad idea

I can say that my car model was on top gear though (the Peugeot) youtube.com/watch?v=Fzb6z6f0cbY

It's a pretty car but being a GTi model aka performance it's not available everywhere

4:23 PM
@CaldeiraG heh I'm not surprised. My uncle has an Alfa Romeo that he loves like his child. But he has the hardest time getting it serviced since there's definitely no dealership anywhere near him

@scohe001 :(

4:39 PM
@Belle psychiatrist ?

"Merge" was probably a poor word choice there. From my understanding, it's not a dump of all these scopes into Stack Overflow. It was meant to be something like showing other sites related to the topic in the sidebar similar to Teams, still independent with their own scopes, but much easier to navigate between and search content from one place. — animuson ♦ 3 mins ago
@Belle Oh, cute cat!

I'm a kitty now!

@Belle I take it that you are a Gryffindor one?

Q: A Note To Meta on my 2020 Kickoff Blog Post

PchandrasekarHello members of the Meta community - I wanted to share the blog post I wrote to kick off 2020 and reflect on my first 90 days at the company. It’s intended for a wide audience, the tens of millions of people we serve, but also because I know you all want to hear directly from me. My style is to ...

<grumble>You sit there talking about "community community community" blah blah blah right after the very team of intermediaries between the company lost half its members!</grumble>
If there was any truth in those words, there wouldn't be two Q&A platform projects being developed as alternatives by members of the community you so value!
</rant>

npm install grumble
<grumble>Yea! We just want solid Q/A with decent tools for moderation. Why are things so complicated now?</grumble>
Ooh this is kinda fun

@El'endiaStarman I must say, I upvoted Juan post but I kind of want to downvote Pchandrasekar one...
