Also the author has a Ph.D, so that definitely lends to her credibility as well.
> Iranian state TV says Tehran has launched "tens" of surface-to-surface missiles at Iraq's Ain Assad airbase, which houses U.S. troops, in response to the killing of top Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.

though it really only shows what i think is the launch
don't see any explosions
i feel wrong in saying we should watch Trump's twitter knowing he's going to react on there if the attack is verified

@Memor-X The actual base is in a whole other countries
Missiles be scary with their range

1:01 AM
> Days without a new war: 6
Well, there was an attempt. Maybe we can break double digits next decade.

1:19 AM
+233.
That was my cat
Specifically it was my cat thaT launched the missiles
He rolled all over the keyboard,a dn then rt5h4ee w ef
At this rate my cats going to ban someone

1:45 AM
Guess we'll see how long that lasts 🤷🏼‍♂️

> Iran is warning that if there is retaliation for the two waves of attacks they launched their 3rd wave will destroy Dubai and Haifa.
> Iran is saying that if there is no retaliation from America for these latest attacks then they will stop attacking. But if America attacks then their response will be crushing and wide spread
This is why Trump "Foreign policy" doesn't work. Eventually, someone fights back.

So we managed to get some Iraqis killed for no particular reason and maybe nothing else

@CBSNews

@finnygo
reports that the president is in the Situation Room with national security advisors.
I'm too lazy to make that quote less terrible

Yeah, that was earlier
They apparently decided to shrug it off for the moment, people are departing

How the US responds to this will entirely depend on how well Trump is controlled by his aids.

1:52 AM
Probably because Trump wants to watch his favourite people on the TV and decide who makes the most convincing statement/says the last thing before he passes out

I'm positive he wants nothing more than to respond with another attack. Hopefully his staff can stop him from doing so.

Tucker Carlson wants him to focus on the xenophobia and detention camps so we'll see

2 hours later…
4:09 AM
Earthquake and a plane crash in Iran to top things off

4:21 AM
@TimStone This makes me very mad.
The people running our country are just complete assholes.

The Board with list of options of how to respond

1 - do nothing and apologize.
2 - launch a counter offensive on their missile bases
3 - THIS IS A JOKE OPTION Nuke Iran THIS IS A FUCKEN JOKE, DO NOT CHOOSE IT!
Trump will choose Option 3

@Wipqozn fuck, I have friends in Haifa right now. The centre of my Faith is in Haifa.

Downtown Ottawa shooting leaves many injuries, police say
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/gilmour-street-shooting-ottawa-1.5418686
As if there wasn't already enough going on..

2:27 PM
@Wipqozn Wow, why were there so many Canadians on that particular flight, from Iran to Ukraine?

2:55 PM
My uninformed guess would be Iranians who sought asylum in Canada at some point but otherwise were safe to return now, coupled with the limited operating flights in and out of the country

3:25 PM
Surprising, it was a very new (~3 years) 737-800NG

3:45 PM
did they determine whether that video was authentic? Showed it was on fire in the air

I'm not sure, I know Ukraine asked Iran to retract a prior statement that indicated it was an engine failure since it was too early

That seems supported by satellite imagery of the damage, at least. Suggestions by natsec folks online it was mostly equipment buildings et al that were hit
Anyway Trump is about to talk about this now so let's see how he makes it worse this time

@TimStone oh God

4:06 PM
You know, once it starts
He sure is taking his sweet time

@Wipqozn hearkens back to the good old "let's watch an empty podium for hours" campaign days

NPR has great contrast

(*for some odd definitions of "good")

"In a few minutes, we’ll have the president’s speech on Iran and a potential war, but first...what is the right way to eat pizza? With a fork and knife?”

4:15 PM
skip let me ADDRESS this issue. You KNOW I am sensitive to the terrible things america has done during its reign as global hegemon. BUT

@Unionhawk lol holy hell I saw this as a cropped screenshot earlier and thought it was a parody
throws a table

The best part is that the but isn't even factually accurate

not EVEN a little bit

@Stormblessed Pizza with a fork and knife is legit
That's how I'll normally eat it at home

"We've respected the rule of law both before and after we did those things"

this reminds me though I should check out Manufacturing Consent

To clarify, they're saying it was an early-warning system, they weren't notified by anyone
> A hangar at al Assad, a sprawling complex 100 miles west of Baghdad that houses about 1,500 coalition forces, was severely damaged, according to a U.S. official speaking to USA TODAY on the condition of anonymity. The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, added that early-warning systems gave U.S. forces advance knowledge that missiles had been launched.
here they come...

(for more on the above NYT op-ed, Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media by Edward S. Herman, Noam Chomsky pub 2002 available probably in your local library digital catalog (I see it on both hoopla and overdrive in Cincinnati but for some reason no physical copy except maybe through OhioLink))

lol, reminds me of a men's choir filing in in rows. Just need someone to blow on a pitch pipe

Everyone looks super nervous
He has started
No one killed. THank zeus.
WEll, none of our people.

4:29 PM
No Iraqi lives were lost? is that true?

@BradC fwiu, no

okay iraqi too, good

but my understanding may be wrong

I mean assuming he's not lying

same old lies about the Iranian agreement...
wow, that's a new lie

4:33 PM
Yeah, I'm not really informed on all this, so I'm not even sure what parts of what he saying are true or lies.

@BradC Context?

@Wipqozn the main (old) lie is that the US paid Iran as part of the deal. That's just not true
@Ronan the new lie (maybe it was part of the old, but I hadn't heard it before) was that Iran used the money (supposedly) paid to Iran by the US to fund terrorism
All part and parcel
We don't need middle-east oil? Even if that is true (I'm not sure it is), they still set global prices

ISIS is 100% destroyed, but they remain our enemy... ?

Trump and the Old White Man Chorus

@BradC My understanding now is yes, and that original reports of casualties were the result of Iranian disinformation

4:41 PM
So, more sanctions? which is what started this whole escalation thing in the first place?

I'm pretty sure what started it was us shooting one of their guys with a missile but idk

I mean, 2 thumbs up for not nuking Iran, I guess

Honestly not sure how much left there is to sanction but that seems to be the plan, such as it is

@Unionhawk well, going further back to the US leaving the Iranian nuclear deal.

we care so much about the people of Iran that we're actively destroying their lives

4:44 PM
And the rest of what he said was just word salad nonsense

They were satisfying all conditions, we dropped out and re-implemented sanctions. That's when the whole escalation thing started

but it didn't really escalate further until we fired a missile at them

Hezbollah killed a US contractor and then we killed 25 (ostensibly Hezbollah?) fighters and then people burned the embassy and then we assassinated Soleimani and then Iran shot rockets at us
Whether or not Hezbollah would have killed the contractor had we done anything other than not being there, idk

@Unionhawk Clearly that was the largest "step" in escalation, but there were many other smaller steps along the way. (the tanker attacks, the US drone takedowns, etc)
Saw a good writeup on this the other day:

Anyway the President was barely able to say the word "tolerate" so things are going very stably

4:55 PM
@TimStone also pronounced "terrorist" as "terrist", which threw me for a moment

5:45 PM
> What Is Trump’s Strategy On Iran? A FiveThirtyEight Chat
closes browser window

@puzzlepiece87 lol.
Found the answer to my earlier question, about why so many Canadians were on that Iran to Ukraine flight:
> He said most of victims were visiting family in Iran over the holidays. He said many were dual citizens and many were international students. “One of the reasons why you take that flight is you wouldn't want to take a flight that has a connection in the United States because international students can't do that," he said.
> The Tehran to Toronto route via Kyiv is an affordable route for Iranian Canadians and international students. There are no direct flights.

Some folks: Hmm disable the monarchy
British Tabloids: With racism?
Some folks: …No?
British Tabloids: Well we did it anyway
Unfortunately the rest are immune

tech/political/law enforcement/security crossover news story
> Honestly, I don’t think this has anything to do with the Pensacola shooter. I think this is part of a campaign to drum up public support for making true encryption illegal. And if it really is about the Pensacola shooter, the FBI’s leadership doesn’t understand how encryption works, which is disgraceful.

@Unionhawk ??????????

yeah I'm with tay on this one, there's a 0% chance paul got a real phone call from symantec or whoever
sir your ip address has been forwarded to the FBI unless you let us disinfect it immediately

@TimStone Also, the strategy of going onto Twitter and saying "I believe there is evidence that my computer was used to transmit child pornography"

Right?!

paul please call the NYT infosec department immediately
or don't and then get all your passwords stole if you want, I'm not a cop

Maybe he should have just claimed they submitted that article using his IP

10:37 PM
@BradC I am really grateful you found this info, it's helping me deal with people on Facebook theorizing

@Ash cool. Yeah, it seemed weird, but makes sense. its the right time of year for everyone to be headed back to school after break, too

user15026
It does make a great deal of sense. But people like their conspiracy.

@Ash Reading the article again, I think this paragraph contains a typo:
> Younes Zangiabadi, a board member of the Iranian Canadian Congress, said because of U.S. sanctions, there are many options for Iranian-Canadians to travel to Iran.
Should that be "there are not many options..." ?
Because I can't imagine US sanctions making it easier somehow
Not sure if this is what they're really alluding to, but the travel ban (aka Muslim ban) also restricts (or prevents entirely) travel from Iran to or through the US, so might contribute as well
