12:00 AM
@KorvinStarmast the water’s fine! I lurk here sometimes, and read meta often, etc. Mostly I just don’t have anything to add there.

@fectin sometimes, the acme of wisdom is in knowing what not to say. (a variation on Sun Tzu's aphorism about the acme of skill ...) ;-)

12:17 AM
Heyo

Ben, love your answer on SF&F. now I need to find book of cain. What did I do with it?? Arrggh. Oh, and diablo IV is announced. Yay!

Ben
@KorvinStarmast I did do a bit of back-answering (is that a thing?) - adding more information to existing answers/providing additional info that other answers didn't have too.
Which one were you referring to?

Diablo portals, i am watching trailer now ..ooooh, drooling

Ben
@KorvinStarmast I did also see a preview of the play, from BlizzCon. I'm refraining from getting too excited... but it's hard
Ah yes. It was a nice find. I am really enjoying piecing all of the lore together (particularly within D1). The issue is that it is fairly obvious the lore was kind of overlayed on the first game; it was all written as part of Diablo 2; Diablo 1 had little to no story or lore attached to it
Oh whoops... I just realised I left out the source link lol

12:37 AM
@Ben There was the sin war back drop for Diablo I if one read all of the stuff in the book that came with the game. ;) But yeah, they really added more with D2.

Q: How did Lilith escape the Void?

BenWith the release of the Diablo 4 trailer, we see that Lilith is summoned through a dark ritual, allowing for her (potential) return to Sanctuary. In the Lore, it states that following the plan to kill the Nephalem, Lilith was banished to the Void, by Inarius: According to an ancient text, Li...

@Ben My answer is "the same way that the prince escaped from Swamp Castle" 8^D

Q: How do I most effectively serve as group treasurer?

KGlasierMy party and I had just finished part of a Pathfinder campaign and are converting over to D&D 5e. Previously we mostly just distributed all the loot between ourselves with the paladin carrying the majority of the heavy items (as he was the strongest). We mostly ignore armour and currency for encu...

Q: How does sneak attack work with a fighter/rogue multi-class with an extra attack?

J. WagnerI have a level 12 rogue/fighter. Level 7 rogue with level 5 fighter. So I get the extra attack as the level 5 fighter. How does sneak attack work with that? Do I only get to apply it on one attack? Situation is I am going to be a sniper using Sharpshooter. I have the assassin archetype to pick ...

@Ben That is a Monty Python and the Holy Grail reference, and has to do with a horse named Concorde ... :-)

Ben
Oh right lol. Been a while since I watched it haha

grin shoulda found a youtube excerpt, but the "guards guarding the guard" bit may have something to do with it in the Diablo Lore when all is said and done.
In the trailer, the guy who says to Lilith "dear mother" is I guess a Nephalim, since she was more or less the mother of the nephalim. What I am interested to see is the "next twenty years after the end of diablo III expansion ends" how, if there is a nephalim left standing, what happens to the nephalim ...

Ben
It could be; meaning that some Nephalim are looking to align themselves with Hell (by extension through Lilith). She has separated herself from Hell, of course, but her gain is to rule over all, by way of an Army of Nephalem.
Or; it could simply be a title
"Mother of Dragons" style
@KorvinStarmast Well, the Nephalem were "unlocked" after the destruction of the Worldstone, so they became more prominent after the events of Diablo 2.
I'll admit, I haven't actually played through the D3 Expansion properly, but from what I can discern, maybe the temple of the firstborn has something to do with things...?

1:24 AM
I kinda want to soften the "you are a goddamn bear" tag for Honey Heist, in my promotional materials. I don't think it accurately reflects how I'm going to be running the game.
Anybody got suggestions for how to change it to still capture the "this is ridiculous" element?

Hmm
What's the context again?

@BESW "You are a bear. Seriously. A BEAR."

I like that.
I'm gonna buy little standees for the table that take letter-size paper, so I'm making these for each game.

And maybe a little "grrrrr..." at the end?
"You are a bear. Seriously. A BEAR. (grrrr...)"
Or maybe that's putting lipstick on a... bear.

Ben

@nitsua60 Yeah that seems good

Thought we found a Bear in tonight's game. Turns out it was "The Fell Beast of The Forest". So we went the other way!

Did you help him up first?

@JoelHarmon haha

Anyone happen to know if, in D&D 5e, there is a pair of spells that suppress each other by name?
I thought bane/bless might, but they simply do opposite things.

1:45 AM
Spent most of the Session wandering round the Faerie Woods, ended up back where we started ...

Ben
@JoelHarmon counterspell?
"I am rubber, you are glue"

@BlackSpike If a Beast is Fell in the Forest but no adventurers encounter it, does it make a sound?
3

@Ben I'm looking for suppressing specifically; counterspell and dispell magic are my examples for another effect.
That of actually removing a thing, rather than negating/suppressing it. And antimagic field doesn't have an opposite the way I'm looking for (that I know of).

@BESW Luckily, we neither encountered it, nor heard it! Found its footprints, and the trees it had uprooted ...
and the only sounds were the whispers on the wind, tempting us from the Path

Ben
oooh… @KorvinStarmast

1:50 AM
@JoelHarmon shield/magic missile.

Ben
> Several statues of the temple (possibly representing Lilith) have a stylized rope-made pentagram on the chest. This is the only use of that symbol in the entire game bar the Darkening of Tristram event.

MM hits by rule. But shield both gives +5 AC and stops MM by name.

@nitsua60 Good, but not really a bonus/malus pair.

Oh, suppress specifically. In a bit of a different direction.
Like if faerie fire specifically only worked on things under the effect of invisibility? (By name.)

Right, probably should have started more detailed. So, for more context, I'm looking at a recent question and trying to find a pair of spells that cancel each other out, specifically in analogy to Advantage and Disadvantage.

1:53 AM
@Ben Was that one of the side quests ... it looks familiar but I have not played in a while.

Q: How many 1/day spells can a Warlock monster cast?

AndrendireIn Volo's Guide to Monsters, each Warlock monster has 3 high level spells in its list of "1/day" spells. For example, the Pact of the Fiend Warlock has the following: 1/day: feeblemind, finger of death, plane shift Can it cast each of these spells once per day, or can it only choose one of...

Ben
2:08 AM
It seems that it is only available in Adventure Mode? Which doesn't enforce a "beginning to end" playthrough. The whole area is unlocked and freely accessible. You can play through it in any order.

@BlackSpike at least you didn't get chased by a manchineel treant

@Shalvenay That, or the treant has a good passive hide.

2:31 AM
@Ben I got that too, and it's not in act III, it is in a different act ...
@Ben It's all I play anymore, adventure mode

Ben
It seems it's not part of any act. Act 4 was focussed on Malthael, whereas the Temple of the Firstborn was not part of that act at all.

Act V was Maltheal. Temple of the First born was IIRC added to Act II as a quest that sometimes cropped up.
Act IV was Heaven
Act III The North/Fort

Ben
Sorry, yes.

Act II Caldeum
Act I Tristan
I really liked the "Set" quests; my necromancers tended to do those well
Can't say I have a favorite, but there was this one set for Monks that totally rocked.

Ben
I think I got a couple of the Necromancer sets

2:40 AM
Those are fun, to be sure. I just realized that I missed this last season
Something to do when wife goes out of town this weekend, if her plans coalesce ...

Ben
One was Inarius' set, so not specific to the necromancer
Bones of Rathma. That's the one I was thinking of.

3:06 AM
@nitsua60 and @KorvinStarmast, I just did a large rewrite on the controversial advantage/disadvantage question, and I'd welcome feedback.
Any other D&D 5e folks are, as always, welcome to review as well.

3:33 AM
I'm not sure the spell analogy is helpful?
If I'm reading your read of the question right, it boils down to:
"Any number of disadvantageous situations cancels any number of advantageous situations (and vice-versa) when determining if you have advantage on a roll. Do abilities that say 'you forgo advantage' also cancel any number of advantageous situations?"

@Glazius That seems like a pretty reasonable read of my read of the OP's core concern, yes.
So, the two considerations are
1) did I make a reasonable interpretation of OP's concern
2) did I make an improved presentation of said concern

I second the thought that the spell analogy muddies the water here and I think it makes the question a bit long-winded.

Maximum pedantry requires swapping "any number" for "one or more", I think, Just In Case (tm), though I believe you meant that in the first place.

@JoelHarmon Too much Linq. Situations.Any(IsAdvantage)

@RedRiderX Let me see what it looks like in an edit window just with the restructure.

3:49 AM
I think it's a more specific and more answerable question. I don't think it lines up with their concern, but I'm also not sure if the original question is actually expressing a concern or would be better understood as proposing a topic for discussion in a tone consistent with the site.

@RedRiderX On review, I think you were right, so I've removed the analogy.
Another quick read would be appreciated :)
@Glazius I can't speak to author's intent, but I'd be interested to hear back from him.

4:22 AM
@JoelHarmon I haven't had a chance (and won't have one soon) to take a look. I'd say, though, that if the edit's substantial enough that you're asking for feedback here and are wondering how well it captures their intent, that this may be the sort of situation for an "edit, rollback, leave comment pointing OP to my edit" approach.

@nitsua60 There's an idea. Thanks (again)!

np =)

@JoelHarmon Without a use case the question remains one that needs improvement in scope.I think @Xirema made that point in a comment . I think Xirema is correct

I suppose I left it a bit implied, but Rapid Strike might allow you to take an advantage off an attack, and still have a different advantage on it.

If we work hard enough, we can confuse ourselves. :) Nite all.
@Ben I just went through the temple of the firsborn. Yeah, Vidian looks like that guy in the trailier, and sure enough Lilith statues are all over, pools of blood, and lots of rhetoric about hatred. Foreshadowing, Blizzard style.

4:35 AM
@KorvinStarmast Later!

4:52 AM
@JoelHarmon "advantage" and "disadvantage" are not capitalized in the rules, so they should not be capitalized in quotes of the rules.

@V2Blast You're right. Not sure where I picked that up from for this question.

when in doubt, blame Roll20?
:P

You know, it was probably something from Roll20, despite my never having used it.
And with that stunning wit, I'm off. Later, all!
(and thanks!)

Q: What is a good way to challenge an Agonizing Blast Warlock?

AndrendireIn my session I have a Warlock with a Charisma score of 20 that's been using the Agonizing Blast/Eldritch Blast Eldritch Invocation to rather spectacular results, decimating everything that I've thrown at the level 8 party. @goodguy5 But that just allows you to pass the (super selective) exam that gets you in astronaut school, it's not enough to get you to the space station

@PierreCathé That's just one extra step

It's kinda freaky how close the ISS is

254 MILES?!
I've driven further than that in a day

Man I'll just tell that to my players then :
"So in this session all you have to do is save those people over there, lift the orc's curse, find the ancient artifact, and free the valley from Strahd's evil clutch."

Yeah. (And it's falling down, slowly but still, due to resistance from the reallllly thin atmosphere)

Easy it's just four things

@goodguy5 Getting to space is easy, moving fast enough to stay in there... not as much :)

NASA draws the line to 80km altitude, which means even the German V2 rockets were capable of very limited spaceflight :)
(Long range trajectories typically had an apogee somewhere between 80 and 90 km)
I kinda want to play KSP again with these discussions

What is the best way to logical problems in upvoted answers? Downvote them and move on? Make a comment? Ask a question about the logical problem, self answer it then link the accepted answer in the comment of the original answer?

based on my calculations, the closest the ISS comes to me is about 300 miles, considering the hypotenuse..... well, close enough anyway. The curvature of the earth very slightly throws off my estimation, but only in my favor.

If you see a small problem in an answer, leave a comment. If you see a big problem in an answer write your own
Is what I think you should do

@PierreCathé KSP doesn't have Lagrange points, horseshoe orbits or other cool stuff tho :(

@jgn Specific example in mind?

1:11 PM
@kviiri Well, it does run on non-supercomputers

In general I would say it depends on how much effort you're willing to put down

jgn
@Someone_Evil Just saw this thread: https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/90586/when-making-multiple-attacks-does-advantage-from-being-unseen-apply-to-all-atta
Unfortunately both upvoted answers are based on partial readings of the Unseen Attackers and Targets section and don't even really cover the question anyway.

The coolness of stuff a physics simulation can model is directly related to the amount of cpu you got

@PierreCathé Yes, but I think that makes it unlikely to actually teach orbital mechanics better than a physics degree :)

@kviiri Well of course, that's just Randall being Randall

1:12 PM
It does a good job teaching the basics though

@jgn that question is a duplicate, you shouldn't answer it

@PierreCathé More specifically, you can't

@kviiri And it makes you feel like a rocket scientist !

jgn
@PierreCathé no frame challenge pleaseeee >w<;;

@jgn Hold on to your frames, 'cause I'm about to start challenging !

I think something got lost in translation.

If you think you see a problem with a post (Q or A) you are free to leave a comment. I recommend being a bit humble, ie. use wording which leaves open the possibility that you are misunderstanding something. Usually makes people a lot more open to solve the issue with you.

I am trying my best to play the political game ^^ I will do my best, thanks for your advice @PierreCathé and @Someone_Evil
@KorvinStarmast I usually like pointed questions and equally pointed answers, but its interesting to read something so in depth

@Ben Ben, that's just to much groan not to grin. :-)
@doppelgreener It makes you look more like a diamond mod. 8^D
@Carcer Ice eggs are what polar bears hatch from: wait, or was that white dragons?
@kviiri A guy who worked for me was a finalist at the NASA interviews for astronaut three times. But they always picked someone else. After the third time, he told me "God's telling me to get closer to Him some other way" and didn't put in a fourth package. His wife was greatful.

1:35 PM
@KorvinStarmast Good attitude :)

@jgn I remember a few of the best answers I saw when I first started bumping about on SE were answers where an example illustrated a point. (And using examples is a very old style instructional method ...)
@kviiri Yeah, they had three boys. A few years later when (Columbia) went down I immeditately thought of RB and thought: good move.

Yea.

@PierreCathé To onebox it needs to be alone on a line, no other text.

@Rubiksmoose Thanks

No problem :)

GcL
1:49 PM
@kviiri Of course, but unless you work with orbital mechanics on a regular basis, KSP is the best there is. Even the people at JPL like it.

@GcL Well, the graph I was pointing at does have that "actual job at NASA" bit.

GcL
@kviiri I wonder how many jobs at NASA actually involve calculating or manipulating models of orbits. I would expect it's a very small percentage.
Now I'm thinking, what would be a good job at NASA? I already know my pick: astronaut-cowboy
Herding space cows
Those ideal spherical ones that clean up stuff all the time.

There might be a distinction to be made between being able to compute things acuratly, knowing about all sorts of phenomena, and instinctly (i.e. without having to spend much time thinking) understanding how something works.

@GcL The Urban Spaceman, ofc.

GcL
Good one.

1:54 PM
@GcL | There are some interesting articles on NASA in this issue of Texas Monthly that include a few looks at what people do there in Houston.

GcL
@Someone_Evil The more I learn about and use a phenomena the more I'm amazed it actually works.

> what is this doing here?

@GcL That guys who counts down for rocket launches

GcL
Ha! yes. That would be a good one. "The voice that launched a thousand rockets"

@GcL That sound like a short story I would like to read

1:59 PM
@PierreCathé On their last day of work <DU DUM DU DUM DU DUM DUM> IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Humanity hears some kind of signal from space which we intepret as a voice and which cause a mass frenzy to go to find the source

@KorvinStarmast A guy in the next cubicle over at Goddard was an actual been-to-space astronaut. I remember having the clear thought "this guy's an astronaut and he still works in a cubicle. What chance do I have!?"

GcL
@kviiri Ugh... I'm glad I'm not caffeinated enough to have my eyes fully open; they'd have rolled out of my head.
@Someone_Evil I was thinking Oprah giving out space ships. "You get a rocket! You get a rocket!..."
Now I want an Oprah spaceship. Ughhh... well one weird Kerbal mod coming up.

@nitsua60 If there's extra wall pieces (what do you call those lightweight non-structural wall things cubicles are made of?) and space (the office kind) you can arrange them in to a five-cornered pentacle!

GcL
@nitsua60 To go to space? Pretty good. Apparently astronauts also work in cubicals, so it's not working against you.
@kviiri We called them partitions or cube partitions". The arrangement that had five walls and one entry way we called "hexicals"

2:05 PM
@nitsua60 Now he's a been-to-office-space astronaut?

@GcL Yeah, but my chances of rising above cubicle-level at NASA? Even astronauts are relegated to cubicles =(

@GcL Oh yeah, partition was the word I was looking at

GcL
@nitsua60 Oh. Yeah. That's a different set of skills and connections.
I'd rather go to space

@Rubiksmoose fun fact: Swingline didn't make a red stapler until that movie spiked demand.

GcL
Install one of those big moon lasers everyone's talking about and push solar sails around all over the solar system.

2:08 PM
favorite quote:
> And every new US Swingline employee receives a red stapler on their first day.

One of my most treasured possessions is a red staple remover.
(A staple remover that is red, not a remover for red staples)
(although. presumably, it works for red staples too)

(Which also makes me wonder if "PC load letter" was written out of the error message lexicon in printer-world after that movie.)
@kviiri That would be strangely specific. But who am I to judge?

@kviiri I need you to know that I was typing out a joke to that effect, but now it would no longer be funny

@nitsua60 Seriously?!

I fold compost waste bags myself using newspapers and advertisement leaflets, so I use the staple remover in pre-processing. This one day I folded a bag that was in its pre-deployment stage so near perfect to a square in form I considered sending it to that standard & measurement office in Paris to be a new prototype for square.

GcL
2:13 PM
@kviiri What would you have to submit that as... carre parfait?

@GcL *carré

GcL
Nobody carres about the accent mark /S

@nitsua60 That article and line are both fantastic.

@GcL Yea they have the perfect manifestations of all the important measuring units in the world. They have the kilogram, made of platinum-iridium alloy, the metre fashioned out the same stuff, a vessel with the interior volume of exactly one liter, and the original minute frozen in liquid nitrogen. Cool stuff!

GcL
@kviiri So who's got the standard meter?

2:23 PM
@GcL They have a standard-meter that measures the amount of standard they have.

@kviiri And the people that study that are of call meteorologists.

GcL
I do enjoy some standard measures.
@Rubiksmoose Aren't those people that study the sudden fall of rocky standards?

@GcL How many beats to a measure?

GcL
@kviiri depends on the variety, red or sugar?

@GcL That's very true. Ask any meteorologist and they'll tell you space rock were so much better back in the day.

GcL
2:26 PM
@Rubiksmoose And the gravity from the wells tasted better.

2:39 PM
@GcL Red, sugar cane makes for a poor walking stick

GcL
@DavidCoffron So that's what led to the Red Scare-city.

@GcL I don't know about red, but scare-city was the most ambitious Halloween event I've ever seen

GcL
@DavidCoffron They had to paint the town some color I guess.

@GcL Oh that was paint; I thought the party just went horribly wrong

GcL
@DavidCoffron It definitely turn a turn to the far left.
Or maybe that get over zealous with the Marx-ers
Anyone have ideas for a joke cantrip "soul patch"? Preferably lightly mocking the facial hair feature.

2:48 PM
hrm...
which is the magic that "whithers the soul"? necrotic?

@GcL I am keeping that joke. :-)

GcL
@goodguy5 like the opposite or radiant? I don't know maybe necrotic?

one of the descriptions calls out the soul, I'm pretty sure. lemme see if I can track it down
> Necrotic. Necrotic damage, dealt by certain undead and some spells, withers matter and even the soul.
as blade ward, except necrotic.

GcL
I like where this is going

and, of course, a shimmering wisp appears under the target's lower lip.
Watching Clash of the Titans, and it gave me another campaign idea.

<insert antagonistic army here> comes from across the sea to request aid against giant creatures and worse.
Might even just use Djinn

GcL
3:06 PM
Could even plot twist it up and have a Rakasha organizing the request for help for their own nefarious purposes. After the big monster battles, all sides discover they were betrayed. Team up with remaining big creatures and go fight the real monster.

hrm......
interdasting.

GcL
Bonus points if the players come up with a counter plot to cleverly foil the evil plan. 10x bonus points if their plot involves faking someone's death

@GcL what if the real monster was the friends we made along the way?

huzzah?

GcL
@Yuuki I've already quoted you on that.

@Yuuki that message got a little bit away from you there lol.

@PierreCathé I've been warned about inquiring into how that's made

@GcL Sausage is made with sausage.

GcL
@Carcer I think that's dolloping.

Although sometimes, sausage isn't made with sausage.

GcL
@Yuuki That hardly assuages my trepidation of the subject

3:28 PM
@GcL In civilized countries, it's made with pork, thyme and sage
And by civilized I mean french

@PierreCathé In countries with good sausage, it's made with pork and thyme and sage and time.
Otherwise you're just eating your sausage raw.
Which eurgh.

@Yuuki In sage countries, it's made with Sid Meier's Civilization

GcL
3:34 PM
@kviiri Can it still be boiled in beer?

@kviiri I feel like the genuine article would be illegal.

@GcL Haven't tried

@Yuuki I prefer my sausage RAI or even RAF

GcL
@Yuuki Did Spock or Kirk ever comment on how the real McCoy tasted? I always heard he was described a salty.

4:28 PM
I never heard of the -in thing, but that's cool!
Darth Stantnoodle

> https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/159009/what-can-my-hide-armor-look-like

Well, it improves stealth, because it's made of hide.

@kviiri No, it's in-, otherwise you'll get Darth Assass.

Invader and Insidious might actually be the only ones I guess
