@Miniman Does the Grave Cleric fit the psychopomp role?

@MikeQ Ugh. In theory, I suppose.

@Miniman I've toyed with psychopomps in Fate...

@BESW I mean, it goes without saying that non-D&D games handle thematic concepts better :P

@BESW Heh.

12:13 AM
I think it'd be fun to play a reluctant psychopomp character.

Uncomfortable with "killing" people? Like Mort and Susan on each of their first days on the job?
Or more like someone from the Abhorsen books who accepts their duty but is afraid to enter the realms of death in order to execute it?
Or something else?

I'm thinking kind of an "I see dead people and do you know how much that freaks me out."
Like, their job is to help people accept being dead and moving on, and that's the only way to get all these ghosts to stop bugging them.

So like the tv series Dead Like Me?

Eeeh, very vaguely.
gotta dash, can take this up later if you want.

user15026
@Miniman I haven't thought of those books in forever I loved them

12:25 AM
@Ash They're pretty great.
Although I'll admit to liking Sabriel (both the book and the character) a lot more than Lirael (both the book and the character)
If you haven't read it already, Across the Wall (book of short stories by the same author, some of which are set in the same world), is also great.

user15026
@Miniman see, I loved Lirael (book and character) the most

12:56 AM
@Ash Fair enough! I don't think they're bad or anything.
And I love the Disreputable Dog.
I mean, I love Mogget, too, but the Disreputable Dog is just so awesome.

Dang, I missed @BESW?
@BESW <note for when you get back here> You wanted Space Goblins numbers App? I've skimmed the rules, reckon I can bang something together.
/waves to everyone else

user15026
@Miniman The Disreputable Dog was one of the best parts of those books.

1:24 AM
@Ash That's why she's the disreputable do- wait, that's not right.

1:44 AM
lol

@Miniman this

Hiya, folks =)
Played Call to Adventure last night rather than the usual RPG session. It was a bunch of fun. (Once I got over my grumpiness at thinking I was going to be playing one thing and walking in to another.)

@nitsua60 That sounds a) really cool, and b) a lot like an RPG.

Ben
2:57 AM
@NautArch Well, @miniman and I once had an extra-planar adventure where souls were sent to an alternate plane, and when they finally gave up on trying to find their reason for existing in this place, they turned into slugs. So, there's no hard rule that hell only serves hard tacos.
Heyo all

@Miniman It's definitely the sort that you could imagine banging on hard enough to make it a chargen game for a ttrpg. Or as an interstitial (you've all gone off for a few years, what happened while you were away?) session for a ttrpg party.

Ben
And I mean, if Death doesn't TALK LIKE THIS, I reckon that just means there really are no rules in Hell at all.

3:22 AM
@BlackSpike I'd definitely get use out of it!

Q: Does the Tavern Brawler feat grant proficiency when the character is not proficient otherwise?

NicboboThis is a bit challenging to phrase, so I'll use an example. A human wizard with the Tavern Brawler feat gets fed up with a unruly Gnome and snaps off a heavy gate post to stab him with. The DM rules that the post is similar enough to a pike to use its damage dice. Is the Wizard proficient i...

@DavidCoffron Well, I don't see anything wrong about what Liesmith's answer says. Though NautArch says it does rely heavily on Crawford's tweets, the larger argument it's making is that nothing in those quoted tweets contradicts what the rules say, and thus it seems to be a logical ruling that indicates rules intent. (Personally, I also think it's just correct - it's how I've always understood those rules.)
@DavidCoffron Because nothing says you pick the class the spell slot you create is associated with - It's simply a spell slot of a certain level, not associated with any class. It's neither a "Spellcasting spell slot" or a "Pact Magic spell slot" (or a "sorcerer spell slot" or "ranger spell slot") - it's just a 1st-level spell slot (or whatever level).
@nitsua60 Oooh, seems interesting.
I spent my Halloween evening helping my friends make D&D characters for the campaign another friend plans to run :P

You could try Kia ora or Håfa adai.

Ben
...Chymen tolo

How is the å in Håfa adai pronounced?
I usually see å in Swedish or Stargåte, in Swedish it's always the "o" sound similar to the "a" in "all"

Ben
@kviiri So wait... It's actually pronounced "Stargaught"?

6:30 AM
@kviiri I googled it and found this song by Chamorro singer Johnny Sablan:
Where it's just pronounced like "Ha fa day". Dunno if that's accurate or if there's nuance to it that I'm missing

There's some regional variance and orthographical controversy. If you pronounce it like Johnny nobody's gonna laugh.
(If you say "half a day" we'll give you credit for trying.)
...I'm trying to find footage of when Bill Clinton said it on his visit in 1998 but I'm just coming up Joe Cunningham and Julian Aguon singing the anthem.

lol

6:47 AM
@Ben yes, although around here people will also emphasize the final e for extra Swedishness.
So the final e like the e in every
I really like how Swedish sounds, I should work on my skills

Ben
Star-gaught-eh

I think that's a good approximation, yes! And if you want to go Swedish Swedish, as opposed to our Moomin Svenska, you still need to spice it up with some melodic intonations :)

7:25 AM
@BESW No luck I presume?

Nope, I gave up.

kia ora has a Wikipedia article of its own, complete with IPA!

yeah, Māori orthography is much more settled than CHamoru orthography.
(case in point, on Guam the official spelling is CHamoru as of... last year, I think.)

Interesting how many greetins around the world derive from the same concepts
Peace and health seem to be recurring themes
And servitude, too --- both the Swedish tjänare (which I've picked up from my coworkers) and the Italian ciao derive from expressions meaning "at your service"

Hafa adai is basically "what's up?" or "What's new?"
It's usually taken to mean "How are you?" and the response is todu maolek, "S'all good."

7:37 AM
I checked that kia oro taken literally refers to good health, which is common with how we Finns greet each other. There's something really warming about humanity being so connected by these wishes for very basic good things for our friends, like good health or peace.

If you really want to know, and aren't just asking as part of the casual greeting ritual, you'd say something like Håfa tatamanu hao?
But never just say Håfa? because that's more like "What the hell?"

The "how do you do" trap :)
@BESW It's like the "flat what"?

Yeah, but ruder.

I see

It's got sort of "What's wrong with you that you're doing that?" vibes.

7:50 AM
yeah

And "thank you" is "God have mercy," Si Yu'us Må'åse'.

if you say "what" there is some possible face saving because you could have just not heard
if you say "Hafa?" it's more similar to saying "what did you just say?" in an insulted tone
or even possibly bemusedly just definitely not in the "I actually just genuinely want you to repeat that because I missed it" sense

Q: How to tag games with the same name?

mwarrenI have just bought a new RPG called Polaris so I looked up the polaris tag on the site to see if there were any questions about it. All of the results appear to be for another game called Polaris which is very different. My question is how games with the same name can be tagged so that you can t...

@TheOracle naive first guess, include publisher in the tag?

@V2Blast that's the interpretation I personally settled on too

@V2Blast sounds like fun. I spent part of mine watching El Camino.

is there a tag length limit (I assume of course yes but how long is it)

righto

Morning ^^

Afternoon!

how is everyone

A bit miffed about a bigot who armed themselves with poorly-understood statistics, nothing worse.

ahhh
that sounds awful
hey

1:34 PM
There was a report that presented a certain poorly-defined ethnic group as having vastly more homicide perps in proportion than the general population does... except since our police doesn't classify race or ethnicity, the data was based on unreliable matching by name. And the ethnic group in question is relatively small, so the seemingly huge number of homicides per year, when all maths are done, boils down to something like three perps, overall. (not even three per year...)

oh wow um yeah I can see how that could be used against a group

@Gwideon Sorry, I don't eat hey.
If you have any candy though I'll take that.

haha

:) How's it going?

pretty good. I had a fun night with friends last night. I got to dress up as my swashbuckler rouge and hand out candy so um yeah.

1:39 PM
Sadly quite many people, even within the academic community, pay their respects to the raw concept of "statistical fact" without really considering the truth behind the statements made in the statistic. I mean, there are many cases where the raw numbers are misleading (that's why we have p-values, t-tests etc) as well as many cases where a completely unbiased experiment not only can but is likely to produce an untrue result, eg. the Sharpshooter fallacy.

Yeah that is pretty sad.
@Rubiksmoose what about you?

Well I tried to hand out candy, but we only got a single trick or treater XD. My neighbor said that it was more ToTers then she's seen in 4 years (not a single one).
But it was still fun. Watched Harry Potter and have a couple of parties this weekend.

Nice

Sharpshooter fallacy is particularly evil because it is often impossible to discern from just the result (because usually only the interesting results are published)

@Rubiksmoose I'm kinda unsure of what to do right now. I've been listening to a bunch of castlevania music and it's really making me want to play one of the games but I don't have any castlevania games
@kviiri I just had to look up what that was

1:49 PM
I'm actually going to move this to the general room if you don't mind.

yeah that's perfectly fine

13 messages moved from Not a bar, but plays one on TV

and yeah it's pretty bad
I've also been thinking about how a lot of it would be good for some background music for my dnd sessions

@Gwideon You know Castlevania is one game I've never played. Not even once.
I don't even know the music except the few times I've heard in in Smash.
But I bet it would make great D&D music.

It's really good music.

1:54 PM
@kviiri Ugh. Yeah. Things like that are super sneaky.

um just a link to one of the covers I really like

@Gwideon At work so can't listen, but I will later :)

okay

@kviiri That's disappointing. For my university statistics class, like half the material was "here's how you can lie with statistics" to attempt to avoid that bias towards statistics

I wish some people would look into stuff before mindless spouting it of as fact.

2:02 PM
@Delioth It's tricky because stats are pretty easy to even unintentionally misuse.

I've kinda been reading over r/RPGHorrorstories and um it's kinda making me sad some of the stuff there

@Gwideon Yeah some of that stuff is just really saddening for sure.

A childhood friend of the family used to say (and likely still does):

<southern US twang>There's only three kinda lies.
Lies
Damned Lies
and Statistics.</southern US twang>

I hate that some people's experiences with TTRPGS was spoiled by others doing some really horrible stuff.
I find especially sad when it happens at an adventurers league or with newbie players.
anyways I'll shut up now

Yeah some of the stuff I've heard sounds quite horrible and I don't even visit that sub

2:17 PM
@BESW On the topic of Asian characters in media suddenly revealing martial arts, I remember a moment in Star Trek 2009 when Sulu whips out a collapsible sword. I get the feeling there might have been some actor override by John Cho maybe because he totally pulled out a katana-esque weapon but claimed he had training in "fencing".

There's um a lot of stories of players trying to do um inappropriate things to another persons character or an npc and it kinda just makes me think WTH. Um I guess um that's the more problematic portion of the community reeling it's ugly head.

@Yuuki That's a reference back to the original series

@Yuuki Maybe he just meant he specialised in selling stolen katanas.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah, that was roughly the other half of the class. It was mostly an overview of "how you can misuse statistics" after we went over the basics and math parts (how to do standard deviation, getting a p-value, etc)

2:35 PM
@BESW whats a good way to check what you'd want Goblin App to be like?
Quick check looks like 1 Ship (with a few Stats), 2-5 gobbos (a few stats), Toothiness. Junk. Maybe some notes.
Each can have +/- buttons to adjust.

I'm going to try to work in some goblin trick or treaters in an upcoming game.
"prankorrat" (prank or rat, for eating) is my current working title.

@Gwideon will we be able to see it when it is done?

@Gwideon Was browsing that subreddit you linked. Curious to see if I'd show up in any of them.

@MikeQ have you caused a lot of bad RPG experiences?

Probably. Law of large numbers sort of thing. Run and participate in enough games, one is bound to turn up in another person's horror story.
And every TTRPG horror story has at least one perspective that isn't being told

5:34 PM
@Ash Yes. I'm gonna post it on youtube and I'll link it here

5:47 PM
@Gwideon Good. Power's partially out at work, so it's a bit of a "do whatever" day.
I can see why some of the larger corporations have experimented with carving out a half-day a week to just disengage from "main task."
@Gwideon You?

@nitsua60 And what an almost appropriate day for carving :)

huh?
i'm a bit confused

GcL
@nitsua60 Has anyone tried sending the burliest guy they have into the basement, stripping down to an armor bikini, raising a sword, and proclaiming that he has the power?
It worked most of the time on this one cartoon documentary I used to watch.

@Gwideon (I assume that's a pumpkin-carving reference.)

no it's not

5:53 PM
@GcL Wait, who's stripping in this scenario?

@Gwideon Oh, sorry. I read your "i'm a bit confused" as replying to Rubiksmoose, not to my asking you how you are. Resetting... ... ...

GcL
@MikeQ whomever can rock a bob haircut the best?
but like, a longer one. Maybe a pageboy haircut? I'm kinda fuzzy on those details.
All I know for sure. Bikini, bob, hoist sword, declare you have the power, then lightning and stuff.
Also, I think there's a tiger involved somehow.
But will definitely solve power problems.

oh I'm resetting fine i guess. just watching the castlevania animated series

GcL
@Gwideon That's the one where they burn the scientist at the stake?

yep

GcL
5:58 PM
Well, that's how you get a really angry vampire lord. Probably should have tried a controlled experiment with a tepid bath or a sauna first. Maybe should have consulted the scientist!

Got a pop up alert on my phone. Blizz Con today? Diablo 4 to finally be announced? Barbarian and Druid classes leaked ... for me, that's a must have.

@GcL Or test if she's lighter than a duck

GcL
@MikeQ Yeah. If it was a fair court.

@Gwideon Twitter would go out of business if they did that. X^D

true

GcL
6:02 PM
@Gwideon That's like wishing for water that isn't wet.... which would be kind of nice sometimes.

Why would you wish for ice

ice is wet

GcL
@MikeQ Still wet. The dry kind isn't actually water.

Ice is only wet if it's exposed to something warm, and under certain environmental conditions
If you lower your body temperature to below 0C, the ice won't feel as wet

GcL
Yeah, if you stupidly make an ice luge on short notice by way of a lot of liquid nitrogen, you get some very brittle and very sticky water ice.
Still not dry. Actually, at those temps it tends to hold onto liquor quite well.

GcL
6:25 PM
Back to the HeMan thing... paladin or barbarian?

@GcL Hexblade

GcL
Good one.
Didn't even think of that

Although I would like to see a barbarian whose rage involves magically transforming like that. Sailor Moon magical girl style.

Q: How is this character useful as an ally in Curse of Strahd?

NathanSAs part of the Tarokka card reading, this is one of the possible allies (under Strahd's Enemy, p. 17): This card refers to Arabelle (see chapter 2, area L). She gladly joins the party. But if she returns to her camp (chapter 5, area N9); her father, Luvash, refuses to let her leave. However...

GcL
@MikeQ I'd totally watch a Sailor Moon HeMan mashup.
HeMoon or SailorMan

6:32 PM
He-Man is already a magical girl. This is scientific fact.
3

GcL
It is known

A magical girl subclass would be cool

The DM for my first 3.5e campaign homebrewed me a magical girl prestige class.

Pathfinder had a magical girl archetype for the vigilante class. It has a feature called "Transformation Sequence". Sadly I never got to see it in play.

I was a male dwarf cleric.

6:58 PM
hrm.... I actually don't know enough about heman, but I'm inclined to say barb-lock

@Gwideon Depending on which fictions you're drawing from, it could also work as a magic weapon, rather than being class-specific

true

@MikeQ man the vigilante class seems weird

@Carcer "seems"?

it's the first time I've read it myself so I'm not going to speak authoritatively

7:04 PM
It's so weird that it belongs in a different system

7:34 PM
@GcL We use a more mundane solution.

@nitsua60 Glad to see he's found gainful employment.

@nitsua60 Yikes, not power no lights ... I got nuthin but that one about the space men bank robbery, but that's for three players.

@NautArch Just out of curiosity, how often did your group cast Heroism for the "immune to fear" benefit? Until the spell ends, the creature is immune to being frightened That seems to be of use in the "Fight an Ancient Dragon" problem where the DC for the save versus Fear is 21

@KorvinStarmast Never :) they just had to stay close to me if they wanted not to fear.

@NautArch But in a group without a paladin .. I guess a bard's heroism will have to suffice.

Q: When can "at any time" actions be performed?

jgnSeveral mechanics use the terminology "at any time", but it isn't clear what exactly that means. Concentration You can end concentration at any time (no action required). Alter Self At any time for the duration of the spell, you can use your action to change your appearance in this way...

@BlackSpike I believe it's actually 2 12 hour sessions?

11:27 PM
@nitsua60 I don't think you can search by specific material component from the spells listing, but you could search for "diamond" in the general DDB site search and then narrow the results to spells?
...nope, that only searches the body text (spell description)

@Ben Amateurs! :D No, good luck to them!

so you could filter to compendium results, but that'd get you all sorts of irrelevant mentions of diamonds anywhere in the text of a book

So many good causes ... :(

@Ben Ayy, Extra Life :)

Hrm... that's only imprisonment. Oh, I see: it's searching the spell description, not the whole block of text incl duration, range, components....

yeah
Hmm... It looks like the bundles aren't identical across platforms. itch has 15 things included, DTRPG has 17.
Aberrant Allies: Aberrant Codex 5e, Species Archive: The Belaran (Pathfinder 1e), Circles of Power, Lonely Timbers, Sad Robot, and Watch the World Die are in the DTRPG bundle but not itch.
No Love's Land, Orizuru: a half-formed thing, Loveland, and Across the Waves to You are in the itch bundle but not DTRPG.
