Q: Closest thing to Infinity Gauntlet in DnD5e

TREBI am a GM searching for some means (spell, magic item, artefact, etc) of replicating the power granted by the notorious Infinity Gauntlet as depicted in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. The effect I'm searching for in the game I am going to run as GM isn't "demicide" but is (if anyone recognises my n...

@Himitsu_no_Yami Speaking personally, I downvote all questions of the form "what is the biggest this number can be" because they don't work very well in SE format, and because they very rarely have interesting answers (especially when it comes to 5e).

That's definitely fair
I can respect that (even if my rep doesn't lol)

I mean, you'll definitely come out ahead.

in this case only because it takes 3 downvotes to negate the rep gain from 1 upvote lol

@Miniman Any number? In that case, you missed one

Q: Do Chain Devils' Animated Chains restrain creatures on a grapple?

BeardedPantherThe Chain Devil can make an attack that will grapple and restrain the target on a hit. Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 14) if the devil isn't already grappling a creature. Until this grap...

@MikeQ I read that (and clearly the answerers did too) as asking whether there was a maximum, not "what is the maximum number of creatures that can be crammed into a 10ft radius sphere centered on a creature".
I would have downvoted the latter without even blinking.
But "is there a limit" questions work fine, and tend to get interesting answers, too.
One of my favourites is this one, where one person answered based on magic, one person answered based on space, and one person answered based on time.

@Shalvenay hi Shal. Things is good. Keep getting pictures of grand daughter. Life is good, Mrs S is happy.. :)
@Himitsu_no_Yami Sorry I may have, hope I did not make a boo boo
@Miniman I don't, because I like to see people exercise the plunge into the absurd even if bounded accuracy puts a limit on that. It's fun to see the various approaches and why they will or won't work.

Q: What can damage a lich in an antimagic field?

PraxitelesAn antimagic field spell makes magical weapons into normal weapons for purposes of attack. Magical spells also lose their effects. A lich is listed as having damage immunities to: Poison; Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing From Nonmagical Attacks. Liches also have condition immunities to: Charm...

@KorvinStarmast nah, pretty sure you just deleted it cus you asked a question and then saw I'd already answered it in the question

Cool, hope you get useful answers. I like the "how far can we stretch this" kind of question if it is well scoped.

Q: Should we have a canonical "Can the Wish spell do X?" question?

Oblivious SageWe have a lot of questions about the spell Wish across various D&D editions, largely of the form, "I thought of X, can the Wish spell do that?" or "One of my players cast Wish and asked for X, can it do that? What should happen?" I think we would benefit from either a single cross-edition canoni...

About to stream a Q&A with our D&D 5e actual-play podcast in about 10 minutes: https://www.twitch.tv/events/zogvNVMrTJqj56mRX_FRvA

In a universe adjacent to our own lies a world known as Runia. This world, once peaceful and idyllic, is now threatened by a monstrous being from its prehistory. A group of adventurers known as Whiskey Company have risen up to do what they can to fight this entity known only as Nagat. They have trekked far across the mortal realms in search of the shards of Barrinoth, the Titan of Justice, in hopes of returning him to his full power.

@Yuuki yeah true you can do it that way too, I don't personally like to because of the algae cost but if you've got a good source of that it works

Q: What is the most damage one can do with a cantrip in one turn?

Himitsu_no_YamiI'm curious as to what the maximum damage you could potentially do with a single cantrip is. So far the most I can think of is a Warlock of at least two levels with the Eldritch Blast cantrip and the agonizing blast invocation and a 20 in CHA with a total character level of 17 or higher for 4 be...

Q: When two weapon fighting, can a battle master use a manoeuver on the attack action and another on the bonus action attack?

Amethyst WizardThe rules state that “you can use only one manoeuvre per attack” (PHB 73), but I’m unsure how that applies in the case of two weapon fighting. Is striking an opponent with your bonus action considered a separate attack, or part of the original attack?

@trogdor I have a bunch of algae after clearing out a slime biome but I'm still looking to replace my current oxygen generation because algae terrariums require dupe labor.

yeah
slime does give you a lot

hi

hi

how are you\

@Yuuki Out of context, this gives a very strange and interesting picture of your living environment.
In fact, I'm still not entirely certain what game we're talking about.

2:11 PM
Oxygen Not Included, the game about which we've been talking on and off for roughly... three days now?

I think that is about right
3 days or so XD
@Rubiksmoose we just really really like slime and algae
XD :P

@trogdor But, really, who doesn't right?
@Yuuki Ah excellent I've seen the chatter, just never caught the name.

Does slime generate slimelung germs?
Like if I reduce the germ count to zero via a chlorine room or just sheer coldness, will removing it from chlorine or cold cause slimelung to spontaneously appear on the slime?

Just in case anyone's interested, someone's made a chat userscript that makes peoples' pronouns readily available if they're defined in that person's bio:

Glorfindel Screenshot / Code Snippet About It's hard to miss these days - the Code of Conduct is about to change. It will emphasize the importance of using the correct pronoun when referring to a user in third person. This most often comes up in chat, and some users already have information about w...

Both of these things are completely optional of course.

And you can change your chat bio by going to chat.stackexchange.com/users/[chatID#] and clicking [edit] which is right next to "About"
The easy way to get to your own chat profile is to click on your chat icon and then click on the profile link.

2:26 PM
neat

@doppelgreener Holy crap I clicked on the first link in that Q and just found out about that mod-firing and all those mod resigning
Is meta.se on fire ?

yes
I don't advise investigating a lot unless you enjoy drama

Yeah I had already gotten fed up with the ads and license shenanigans

and if you do, probably best to confine chat about it to not a bar

@PierreCathé Kind of, yes. But I as a person (not using mod voice here) would prefer to keep that drama out of this room. We moderators are getting hammered with drama in just about every other area of this site.
But yeah, NAB would be a good place if you wanted to talk about it with other folkx here.

2:29 PM
No problem, I was just surprised by a whole new drama I hadn't noticed, feel free to delete/move my messages if it's inappropriate here
Not really interested in discussing it anyway

@PierreCathé Nah it's all good. You haven't done anything remotely wrong.
I'll probably just leave the messages up so as to discourage future ones, but if it starts attracting discussion I'll move the whole thing over to NAB.

Alright changing subject, is anyone here familiar with Curse of Strahd ? I'm about to reach a scene in the module and it doesn't seem right, or maybe I don't get it?
I could use some fresh opinion on it

i'm mildly familiar with it. what is the scene.

Obviously CoS spoilers going forward future chat readers.

Um I'm not sure I can discuss it here, are there spoiler tags in chat ?

2:35 PM
@PierreCathé Not really. No.

I can start up a room for it maybe

That's the best solution I think :)

@PierreCathé and @Rubiksmoose I made it

@Gwideon Baking competition? Dance-off? Extreme underwater basketweaving?

@Gwideon Is this for the one-shot? Still looking for things for players as well as characters (like with the curses?)

@Himitsu_no_Yami Nice!

@Sdjz JUst wondering what the hell is going on. I'm not big on overall stackexchange culture so yeah this is kinda crazy

Actually since this is mostly being discussed in the Not a Bar it might be more appropriate to not leave that message there (if you could remove it @Rubiksmoose I'd appreciate)

@Rubiksmoose Thank you :)

5:29 PM
No problem! :)

Hey people.
What would you do if there was an important thing you'd like to talk about, but you weren't totally sure it'd be 100% ok or 100% good to talk about it?

@Zachiel Ask if that subject is OK to talk about
Or if it's important enough start the discussion of it anyway

I'd say that is a reasonable course of action^
If it's something important to you and it is something we can discuss in this room we'd be happy to hear it and help how we can.

@Himitsu_no_Yami once I do that, the lid pops and whatever happens happens. It's like opening Pandora's Vase. And you probably already know about this specific thing but... I don't know. I feel like talking is the morally right thing to do, but at the same time I fear the consequences.

@Zachiel Would it make you feel more comfortable if I create a room for you to ask me or another mod?

5:43 PM
@Zachiel If it's related to the current SE news, that's being discussed over in Not a Bar

@MikeQ Yes, that as well.

Thanks @MikeQ
By the way, since it looks like the vase is open already, if someone ends up wanting to leave, I hope we'll meet again somewhere.

5:58 PM
hey

I'm sorry moose don't eat hay.

@Rubiksmoose dude, that's moosed up...

I'm just letting people know I might take a break till the controversy blows over. It's kinda making me really anxious so um yeah.

what's going on?

6:09 PM
@Gwideon Do what you need to. Stay safe, and tend to your mental needs. We'll be here when you feel up to coming around again.

@goodguy5 Visit the not-a-bar room if you need to find out, I and several others have written multiple summaries which should get you up to speed.

thanks

@goodguy5 Lots of controversy over stuff going on being discussed in Not a Bar if I'm not mistaken

@Gwideon Totally understandable.

@Xirema yea. got it. I wish that was the most tense political situation currently happening....

6:11 PM
jesus I can't type today

Sad to hear though. I was hoping our collective silliness could keep this room a safe and comfortable place.

GcL
@MikeQ Wait. Is this Camelot? I heard it, "tis a silly place"

sorry for dragging things down

@Zachiel not to sound dense, but is Pandora's Vase the same as Pandora's Box?

@Gwideon No, no, it's not your fault.
@goodguy5 Yes, as are all variations of Pandora's pithos, which means "jar" but had been translated as "box"

6:13 PM
Here, I'll bring back the silliness: I'm planning to homebrew for my campaigns that Sorcerers get half the sorcery points, but they come back on a Short Rest instead of a Long Rest. Please explain to me why this is the best decision ever and I am the best DM you've ever heard of.

GcL
@goodguy5 I thought the vase was a case where someone has mistakenly left the potting water in and it fermented all sort of bad humors. Which make sense. You never hear about fungi telling good jokes.

strangely, I've only heard Pandora's box, unless it was in specific reference to a container that was relevant to the situation.

Like "I've had some reactions to seafood, but I don't know if it's an allergy. That's just a Pandora's Clamshell I don't feel like opening tonight"

@goodguy5 Pandora's Klein Bottle?

GcL
@Yuuki That's the one that moves around on it's own, correct? I heard it was very mobius.

@Xirema It makes sorcerers more appealing. Could have some really odd consequences, especially if you allow sorc/warlock multiclassing.

6:17 PM
@MikeQ Ironically, while it probably makes the Warlock/Sorcerer multiclass more powerful, it probably also discourages that particular combo.
(I'm also debating maybe increasing the cost of creating a spell slot with Flexible Casting by 1 point per level, but I'm unsure about that)

@Xirema Wait, if they half sorcery points, does that mean they only have 1 sorcery point at level 2? Can they use it?

@MikeQ I was thinking I'd give them a small boost for early levels. 2 points for levels 2-3, 3 points for levels 4-5, and then it would be half their level after that. The official level chart for Sorcerers posts their Sorcerery Points for each level, so it's not difficult to just tweak that chart.
It does leave like 1/3 of the Metamagic options unusable at level 3 though, so I'm still thinking about what to do with that.

I'd imagine that this would encourage the sorcerer to spam lots of low-level spells in between short rests, kinda turning them into warlocks

It would. When I was explaining this to the DM for my other group, he liked the idea although he had a different approach for how to "fix" sorcerers. His idea was to let the (normal 1 point per level scaling) points recharge on a short rest, but get rid of Flexible Casting entirely.
So Sorcery Points would only fuel metamagics and origin features.

That seems less a fix, and more a kick to the shins

6:24 PM
That doesn't sound that bad to me but I've never played sorc

I won't say I disliked that approach, but I do feel like it would just turn stuff like Twinned Spell into more of a "must-have" than it already is, which it is.

I need more people to play with. I haven't had a session in months and I think I'm going through D&D Withdrawal

@Xirema Probably would. Flex casting, metamagic, and origin features are the 3 defining parts of a sorcerer. Taking away flex casting would be a nerf, and origin is chosen once at chargen, so it would shift emphasis onto metamagic choices.

TBH the more I think about Twinned Spell the more weird I find it that they make Sorcerers choose which metamagics they learn. It just turns that particular metamagic into a "tax" and makes you feel like you really only get to choose one other metamagic.
At least if the origins each had their own metamagics you automatically learn, it might ease that burden a bit, but right now all there is is a defacto-metamagic that Divine Souls get in their "Empowered Healing", which is obviously just the Empowered Spell metamagic but applied to healing spells.
And they don't explicitly call it a metamagic, even though it is.
Like, in every way it works, it's a metamagic, WotC just doesn't use the words "you learn a new Metamagic: Empowered Healing".

Some might find ^^ useful.

6:29 PM
@Xirema That wording could be confusing in terms of the # of metamagics a sorcerer knows

@MikeQ I mean, if they're not going to give Sorcerers Origin Spells....

hey um before I go I have to ask um where on stack exchange would I post a meta about how to help and support users with anxiety within in the context of stack exchange.

@Gwideon I'm guessing the main meta would be the right place.

@nitsua60 doppel linked earlier, see it's in the starboard already

okay

6:35 PM
Actually, now that it's in my head: Origin Metamagics. Give two metamagics, one at level 3, one at level 10 (or 17) exclusive to each Sorcerous Origin. I'd take that instead of Origin Spells. That would be really cool.
They've already got one written for Divine Souls, only 9 more that need to be hashed out.

@Xirema in the kindest possible way I would be concerned that some of the inevitable negative responses on main meta mean it should possibly be avoided

@Carcer Valid point.

@Xirema Would they be expanded metamagic options from which to choose? Or free metamagics?

@MikeQ Free. You'd get them automatically in addition to the metamagics you regularly choose.

You'd have to specify whether these origin metamagics can be combined with other metamagics. Otherwise they'd be mutually exclusive.

6:40 PM
> Wild Spell Metamagic. When you cast a spell, you may spend 1 Sorcery Point to cause all the damage types of the spell to be randomized. For each type of damage the spell deals, roll 1d8, and use the following table to determine the new type for that damage. Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage are unaffected.
@MikeQ If we deliberately call them "metamagics", that would be covered by the general rule about metamagics being exclusive.

@Xirema Yes, which would make their origin features less versatile. Not by much. But one of the strengths of sorc is being able to combine a spell, a metamagic, and an origin feature.

Or are you saying we'd generally expect them to be usable with other metamagics, a'la Empowered Spell?

@Xirema If I played as a sorcerer, I'd hope so. They're already kinda underwhelming as is. Making their metamagic and origins mutually exclusive seems like a nerf.

@MikeQ Well, they'd still get their other origin features. This isn't replacing anything, except maybe the Divine Soul's feature, but if it's modeled on Empowered Spell, we'd add the same language that says you can use it with other Metamagics.
@MikeQ Oh, to be clear, I'm not saying we should turn their origin features into metamagics. I'm saying we just add metamagics.

Oh! Hmm. Intriguing.

6:45 PM
I'm just calling out the Divine Soul because their level 6 feature is obviously a metamagic pretending it's not.
Most of the other stuff wouldn't work as metamagics anyways.
Like, the Shadow Origin features allow them to summon a shadow dog. That's not a metamagic, that's just a extremely powerful and arguably brokenly overpowered really neat feature.

The draconic resistance is sort of one

@Xirema Hmm... What could be feasible is some sorta "boon" metamagic option that you'd customize for the sorcerer's chosen origin, and functions independently of the rest of the class

@Someone_Evil Elemental Affinity? Yeah, I could sort of see it. I feel like Metamagics need to change the properties of the spell itself though, not just an arbitrary after-the-fact effect on the caster.

@PierreCathé Well, that's interesting. And made me sad.

e.g. Draconic sorcerers could get a free Elemental Metamagic, but only with their dragon's chosen element
Their level 6 feature is silly anyway. Seems odd they need to pay for temporary resistance to their chosen element, when the other sorcerer origins get permanent elemental resistances for free.

6:52 PM
> Draconic Spell Metamagic. When you cast a spell that deals damage of the type associated with your draconic ancestry, you may spend 2 Sorcery Points to increase the damage of that spell by 1 per die.

hm

Oh and I currently have 666 rep

Even if it's not very good, at least it can be very evil

7:56 PM
@Xirema Here's a good idea: Homebrewify a sorcerer origin where the sorcerer is a living beehive, and can do swarm stuff
(I may have borrowed the idea from Heart: The City Beneath)

@MikeQ BEEEEEEEEES

@Yuuki Thanks, Dr. Bees!

8:22 PM
@MikeQ It's a honey trap, surely.

@KorvinStarmast Funny you mention it, the original planned enemy for that one-shot was a beehive golem

@MikeQ Hehe, I'm not currently working on creating new origins, but that does sound entertaining.

@Xirema That's fair. I think a lot of homebrew class/subclass mechanics would be better (or at least more easily) implemented as items

8:41 PM
@nitsua60 cool

8:55 PM
@Yuuki I don't think so? I think it all starts on slime and any nearby polluted oxygen, and spreads to anything it can grow on
I don't think slime spontaneously brings more of it, though I think it can spread back to slime if you expose slime to it

um hey

Q: If Wish fails, do you suffer the 33% chance to be unable to cast wish ever again?

9:18 PM
@trogdor Hmm... that might reduce the size of my chlorine room for handling slime biomes.
I can remove the algae distiller from my current set-up.

I'm pretty sure anyway

And I can place the algae distiller in my refinery set-up.

that's a pretty neat idea
I should be using chlorine to kill germs more

So the setup I used to clear my first slime biome has a tunnel from the base to the slime biome, manual airlocks in the tunnel. Right below the tunnel is a chlorine room, manual airlocks to enter and exit the chlorine room.
Dupes going from the base to the slime biome can take the tunnel but dupes returning from the slime biome have to use the chlorine room.

oooh
nice

9:24 PM
The chlorine room has four (going to be three) stations in sequence: a hand sanitizer, two ore scrubbers, and the algae distiller.
Next to the algae distiller is a storage bin set to contain only slime and bleach stone, set to priority 9.
So dupes going through the chlorine room have to use the hand sanitizer and if they're carrying anything, they have to run that thing through two ore scrubbers.

why two?
does one not get everything?

I can't remember if one gets everything, but I put two to be sure.

ah

There's also a ventilation system that can be triggered that'll cycle the atmosphere of the chlorine room.
A pump will pull in the atmosphere of the room, filter out anything that's not chlorine, and send that to a vent outside of the chlorine room.
Oh yeah, now I remember why I put two ore scrubbers.
Just in case two dupes show up carrying stuff that needs to be disinfected.
Dupes don't queue so if a station is in use, it's ignored.

ah yeah
that's an extremely good reason

9:30 PM
...and here I am just putting infected slime in a box in my base below a deodorizer. Works well enough. :P

I call it the "my dupes are stupid" reason XD
I do try to kill all polluted oxygen
or at least any that can or does get into my base
but I've actually excavated more space than I can currently easily kill polluted oxygen in

@ACuriousMind Chlorine kills the slimelung faster though so I can run it through the algae distiller.

Ah, well, I have so much algae I won't need to distill slime for a long time

If you put infected slime into an algae distiller, I think it outputs infected polluted water and infected algae and then you start to get into trouble.

I'm just using the slime to grow 'shrooms currently

9:34 PM
Another method I've seen for killing slimelung is to advantage of ONI's germ mechanics.
Since only one germ can exist on anything at one time, you can use buddy bud plants which produce their own beneficial "germs".

lol
Bristle berry does that too
though I have not used it to kill bad germs XD

9:46 PM
oh, I have started farming for glossy drecos though
because I want a source of plastic and I don't think I am ready to go down to where it is super hot to get oil

Yeah, the heat can go stay down there until I'm ready to deal with it.

Q: Can you use wish to cast a level 9 spell?

Q: What good is Divine Sense?

BlueMoon93The Divine Sense feature of the Paladins looks underwhelming to me. It has limited uses, takes an action to use, and you know the location and type of any celestial/fiend/undead within 60ft, not behind total cover you detect any place/object that has been consecrated/desecrated within same area...

Yeah
I mean, I think I'll even be able to use it later to help make steam power but
Not right now
First plastic harvest just now
Not very much but I think I won't have trouble keeping this up for a while

10:05 PM
@trogdor Oh yeah, the plastic production isn't much but it's more than enough until you need to build tube systems and the like.

Yeah
I mostly want it for beds atm
Maybe plastic ladders after, in the base proper
One dupe in particular has a fancy bed now XD

10:37 PM
To be fair, I could also be replacing some of my large pumps with smaller ones
To save power

I have been staring at the chat for the last 10 minutes trying to figure out what are you talking about. Are you trying to grow slime? Who are you two? Halaster groupies? hahaha

hey there @Helwar, how're things going?

10:52 PM
Hey @Shalvenay! Cool, how are you doing?

@Helwar it's about a game XD

ohhh.... now that I had the precious mental image of you cackling mad while the slime grew in special vats

Lol
In Oxygen Not Included there is slime

Oh hey there's a new season of Carmen Sandiego. That's kinda cool.

It's both a bit of a nuisance and a resource

10:59 PM
OHHH
Oxygen Not Included, played like 30 minutes of that a while ago and added it to my "will buy when I clean a little bit of my backlog"

Cool

I just took off Pillars of Eternity from that list
tried it but the gameplay is not for me... the story looks great! but man the IA is dumb, and i have to micromanage every single action... and I throw spells and they take a bazillion years to happen and when they do MY toons are in the AoE and the enemy is cackling mad from outside

@Helwar alright here

How is it? If you've watched it, that is

@V2Blast Solid so far. Good balance between story and trivia (since it's based on a series of educational geography games).

Ah, okay
I saw a trailer for it back before it released but wasn't sure how entertaining it'd really be for adults
