@AnwarShah: re that apt-get question, he probably tried to install some proprietary 32-bit software for his video capture card, causing problems similar to this Q/A:

izx Warning: The GuitarPro deb is dangerously packaged! On a 64-bit system, if you apt-get -f install after trying to install it, apt-get will want to remove the following system critical packages, which can ruin your Ubuntu installation! The following packages will be REMOVED: gks...

Q: Should we modify/edit a popular question to be more useful to others?

Stephen MyallOne of my questions reached over 10,000 views at the weekend and when I was reviewing it I realized that reputation (up votes) doesn't reflect its popularity. It made me think, while the question title was attracting viewers, however the content may not be as useful as it could be. My question...

Q: Time locations In ubuntu 12.04 are showing even not added to list

RajaI am from India , so I have added my time locations in time settings . But i have add only one location but its showing other locations which i haven't added to list . look at the image for the idea of what i m saying. I still haven't found why its happen ?

@Raja - its not chatroom etiquette just to drop Qs here. What is the issue?
6

@fossfreedom thanks :D , i havent added time locations but they are displaying in my time applet when i click at time , see my question . there is a picture .

have a look at my answer here - suggest reset your locations value to its default. askubuntu.com/questions/155151/…

@fossfreedom thanks for the answer but first i wanna find out why its happen

no idea - perhaps add to your Q what the value of the locations field in dconf currently is.

12:47 PM
didnt get you

the date-time indicator shows the time from various timezones using the value of the locations field in dconf. What is the value on your computer for this field.

didnt get you

look at my answer - there is a nice picture to where to look in dconf-editor

1:01 PM
So the python stats tell me one of my answers has 15k+ views -- how can I find "the one"?

@izx good question - well asked ... dunno!

izx
@fossfreedom OK, will post in meta soon...

yawns
i mean, hi!

@izx search for it

jrg
Oh?

hopefully, that helps a little.

1:19 PM
@LordofTime and a good-day to you to!

@fossfreedom there is no such thing as a day

jrg

So you're the one doing that? Grrr.....

1:21 PM
o.O

brings /dev/chaos out of storage and sets it upon @jokerdino

no way!
i have only killed 60 questions so far :/
and it should have been obvious it was me if you just went to /votes ranking anyway...

jrg
i guess i don't care that much. :P

now tell me how i annoyed you ;p

jrg
I don't like it, but I can't stop you, so grrr. :)

1:26 PM
most of them are crappy worthless more or less abandoned questions anyway.
i don't see why you guys would want it.
and seeing how our answer rate has already dropped below 80%, i thought at least i should care :P
and most of them on M.SO don't see any problem with it as well.
so there is no reason for you to get annoyed ;p
and even if you are, you are right. you can't stop me :P
i should really stop hogging the chat but i think even i can't stop myself atm. :?

izx
@jokerdino and @jrg, thanks!

jrg
in otherwords, does the other question solve your problem?

so @jrg I am free to downvote questions right? :P

izx
Hey-o: new "GTP" partition table format in the house!

or do you have any interest in maintaining those pretty much unanswerable questions?

jrg
1:33 PM
@jokerdino you can vote your conscious.

@jrg okay then.

jrg
so if you're fine with it, go for it. I'm uneasy when deleting content, but thats just me.

Hi!

@jrg i am uneasy seeing our answer rate dropping. :/ i had not much of a choice..
heya @lgarzo

@jokerdino I think we all share your concern ... our higher visibility has resulted in more questioners than answerers ... lets hope that turns around soon.

@fossfreedom interesting you bring that part up
the IRCC brought up in their meeting stuff about the irc getting higher visibility on questions that it cant even answer :P

Q: How to mount other partitions?

動靜能量For a hard drive that has 4 or 5 partitions, I was able to mount one of them using Ubuntu LiveCD: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt but is there a way to mount to the other partitions? @fossfreedom well btw, how'd y'all know about my voting pattern thingie?

@lgarzo I'm going to ask the obvious: did you read the answers and comments?

... certain stats are granted mod view ... most of it though is only available to SE devs.

1:40 PM
kinda makes sense.

and backend god users whom are uber super users

goes back to downvoting

@LordofTime Well actually I attempted an answer and a comment on that suggested the bug.

... and no - I cant see a person's voting - just general stuff.

1:40 PM
downvotes @jokerdino

@LordofTime don't be ubiquitous. the questions i am downvoting are almost a year old with users who has just 1 rep and are really pathetic question.
no idea why i said ubiquitous but whatever

@jokerdino learn when i'm kidding :p

@LordofTime i know you were sorta joking but i still wanted to say something :p

izx
@lgarzo No, he just has a corrupted PT...

@izx @lgarzo that

1:44 PM
@izx OK, thanks!

Do internal references count for the unique IPs badges? i.e. I link to my question from an answer or a comment to another question?

@izx no

Is he asking about Upgrading from Precise to Oneiric? askubuntu.com/q/155778/61218

1:49 PM
only external referrals count
referrals from other stackexchange doesn't count either
@AnwarShah broken tool. i have seen that question before.

izx
@AnwarShah IIRC from my own experience, it is possible to get do-release-upgrade to say that if you properly mess up sources.list manually, but I don't see how it could just happen

I just leave a comment, to include which tools he was using during upgrade.

needs some cleanup there ^

@Ashu, Welcome here.

@AnwarShah I think he attempted to upgrade from Oneiric to Precise, the PC died halfways, but now he cannot upgrade anymore.

1:54 PM
That's why i asked to clarify. .... wait .. my comment got 2 votes !!
Can i disable the notification after every mount , in gnome-shell?

izx
Never mind, I shall covet my precious Populist badge and leave the publicity to others :P

@jokerdino, I tried to down boats this one askubuntu.com/q/150641/61218 , but fortunately It is the SAME problem i am facing with my modem, (I believe he is also from my country), edited the question and going to give an answer. I think, we should be very careful with down boating.

@Anwar syntax for links:

@LordofTime, thanks i knew that
It is too late to edit

then use it :P
@AnwarShah that's your fault

@jrg yeah thanks
@jokerdino @AnwarShah I edited my answer askubuntu.com/a/122457/39372

i know there's a dupe of this somewhere... askubuntu.com/questions/155815/…

2:32 PM
@LordofTime, you have just given a link like mine. Was that a joke (i assume), or you were serious

@AnwarShah fast-paste, since i have 16 windows to monitor)

@LordofTime well it can be duped against this one if we just make it more generic... askubuntu.com/questions/6539/…

... similar Q here as well... askubuntu.com/questions/80472/…
@jrg is dealing...

@GeorgeEdison are you around?

@GeorgeEdison you should have said no. would have been more funny.

@GeorgeEdison did you find someone to compile this Qt app ?
:)

2:42 PM
yesterday, by George Edison
I am looking for a Mac user willing to compile a Qt application (NitroShare). I have a Windows and Linux build but no Mac build.

Yes, I did thank you.
The build hasn't been tested yet though.

@GeorgeEdison So the post is not valid, maybe it's better to change it?

Yeah, I can take down the notice now.

@tachyons what? it is invalid behavior.

2:52 PM
@tachyons, I also tried that, but it seems it is not possible to me. I bookmarked the question

@AnwarShah so my simplest answer is askubuntu.com/a/155826/39372 feel free to downvote if it is wrong

@tachyons, but i thought it is possible if he is referring to install from a installed system
I installed kubuntu from a installed Ubuntu system. so, it might be possible to install ubuntu server

@AnwarShah ubuntu server isnt Kubuntu or Ubuntu

izx
Can I get colored text in markdown (or accepted HTML)?

@AnwarShah its just Ubuntu minus the gui

2:55 PM
@tachyons Check this help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/… -- a “zero downtime” Ubuntu install

@AnwarShah you can install the server packages within Ubuntu with a GUI

@AnwarShah but this alternate iso

its how i have a php5 dev/test environment

jrg
@izx as far as i know, no.

@tachyons, yes, i installed from alternate iso

Can I get some down-boats for this very dangerous answer advising "echo PASSWORD" in a plaintext script to bypass sudo:

A: Python script: how do I execute a sudo-command without needing a password?

It is highly recommended never to do this even if you think your system is "personal" or in a "safe location"! If the script is only for ...

it seems the OP is happy with the answer

izx
@AnwarShah We have to consider the community/future readers, instead of just the single OP....

@izx, ok, down boating.

izx
@AnwarShah (Use your own judgment, as always...anyone can be wrong!)

3:03 PM
I think that, a warning is enough. but still thinking

jrg
I wouldn't count it as a duplicate since (as the OP notes) the solution to that post points to an inactive PPA, plus the solution only works for GDM not LightDM. — jackweirdy 22 hours ago

@jrg this

@izx, I suppose the last method is just fine.
though i am not familiar with python

izx
@AnwarShah If you ask me "I suppose your method is fine, izx", what am I going to say but Yes! :P

3:07 PM
@jrg GDM can be installed in 12.04 ,

izx
Note that that Q can probably be duped to any one of the sudo-a-command-without-password questions, only difference is this one is wrapped in python...

@AnwarShah well, to be clear, i am getting rid of poor questions that are abandoned for couple of months.

There are many tags that are not needed and some with typos. How can I submit some for review (I don't have enough rep.) ?

just edit them or post them in the chat.

you can still submit edit reviews right?

@jokerdino i believe he can

@tachyons turn on screen reader and off

@pl1nk try and submit an edit, then link us to the question

@GeorgeEdison are you around?

@jokerdino tried , But no luck :(

12.04lts is a dup of 12.04
32 dup of 32-bit

@jokerdino, if they are older (more than 2-3 months), they deserve death. You can go with your plan

@jokerdino gksudo synaptic works ,but why pkexec wont work ?

3:17 PM
64 dup of 64-bit

@AnwarShah i am killing questions with 10 months old or something.
@tachyons i see. let me think.

Q: Is it okay to send old questions to doom?

jokerdinoGiven this context: If the question is more than 30 days old, and ... has -1 or lower score has no answers is not locked ... it will be automatically deleted. I have downvoted some 30-odd questions that are quite old (more than 3 months or so), have no votes, no answers and not close...

@pl1nk synonyms prevent the weird tags from being used. the actual tag will now be used hereon.
@tachyons good job bountying.

@jokerdino Maybe someone can help ?

with?

@LordofTime the tag syms

izx
3:41 PM
@AnwarShah To be continued answers are fine, as long as they explicitly state that - I sometimes do it when troubleshooting would result in 5+ comments

@pl1nk the mods probably can. (ping @jrg )

which tag synonyms?

@jrg You mean upboating?? :P

izx
@pl1nk Which syns remain? Ack ack!

3:43 PM
@jokerdino Which ones you couldn't set?

@izx, I leave that, thanks

@pl1nk driver and useradd

@jokerdino whats up?

they do the same thing (add users) but they do it in a very different fashion.

izx
3:46 PM
shove 'em both into user-mgmt or similar...

I guess I 'll until I have enough rep to propose tag syns.

you need 2.5k rep and 5 upvotes in a tag.

@jokerdino OK so it 'll take some time.

you did a good job today

3:51 PM
@jokerdino Maybe I could take also a badge :P

heh you get a synonymizer badge for that :)

@jokerdino I know, but I guess not now.

yep

3:53 PM
@jokerdino indeed

@jokerdino Althought I don't understand why so much rep is neeed for tag synonymizing

hehe
@pl1nk to prevent abuse perhaps.

@jokerdino Why this differs from the task of editing question(s) (for instance)

was bored, did a re-install! :D

@pl1nk actually, if you want, you can manually retag the questions with the right one.

3:56 PM
downboat away

 Raiders of the Lost Downboat

Place to sail the open sea, and search out boats to take down....

@jokerdino ..and also abuse it!

@pl1nk hmm probably.
@mateo_salta now i wonder we can just rename our Ask ubuntu multiverse every now and then? :D

anyone from bug-squad here?

@Mahesh yes
@Mahesh also bugcontrol, so whatcha need

yeah

3:57 PM
any name suggestion @jokerdino

@jokerdino so then why not tag synonymizing ?

@pl1nk no idea man. i am hapless

The cog and volume control disappear when I choose anything other than ubuntu-mono light/dark icon themes.

@mateo_salta i am saying sticking the same room might be better :D

@Mahesh is there a bug related question?

3:58 PM
just change the AU mutlverse to crusaders etc

fresh install, btw. So what do I report against?

oh instead of the new room, ok sounds cool

@Mahesh if its a bug in the theme, you should file a bug
lemme check

it was fine earlier i guess...
umm... check it anyway.

@mateo_salta i am just saying..

3:59 PM
@Mahesh i meant which package to file against :P

anyway, i got to go for the night. see ya tomorrow

@jokerdino i'm asking in meta

@LordofTime :P. thats what i was asking..

feel free plink

@Mahesh packages.ubuntu.com/source/quantal/ubuntu-mono i think that's the source package you should file against, but you should make sure it hasnt been fixed in Quantal yet
