Anyone know the speed impact of imaging multiple USB drives athe same time? Like say with a 10 port hub?

Q: VLC media player

Gavin QuickEvery file downloader I have used gives me a unique icon for each file. With the exception of VLC media player which gives me an ugly orange traffic cone instead, for every single file. How to I alter so VLC acts like every other downloader in this specific action?

"Be Nice"

@MichaelFrank you'll probably run in to bandwidth (?) Issues easily if it's a USB 2.0 hub.
> newer USB 3.0, which can handle up to 5gbps (640MBps)—over ten times as fast as the 2.0 maximum.
My newer flash drives are rated for reads at 130 to 150MB/s
So I suppose you could calculate how many you can simultaneously read before you hit the limit
Although keep in mind practically it always turns out to be less than how many you think you can work on at a time according to theoretical calculations.

3:16 AM
If the drives are USB 2.0, then the hub uses USB 2.0 signaling to the host machine. The USB 3.0 wires aren't used even if the hub supports USB 3.0.

5:04 AM
@djsmiley2k I think perhaps why not have the explorer/file navigator of one OS on another one or something garden-wall shattering like that.

5:22 AM
@Nick actually sure you can

@JourneymanGeek how does one simply do so?

@Nick who said anything about simple?
You can run an alternate file manager - and if it happens to be a port....

At this point, we're both just speculating.

Oh
there used to be dolphin port for windows

1 hour later…
6:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek You've just made me get 7z1900-x64.exe so I can open dolphin-master-5.0-10472-x64.7z and by trial and error, I figured that 7zFM was the application I needed to manually select for the ".7z" filetype

Bob
7:19 AM
ifdown enp2s0; ifup br0
ohcrapiforgottochangemymacvlanparents
...welp there goes my network

7:31 AM
@Bob Is that a predictable network name I see before me?
ping?
Ok
I got the orange pi set up as a router
I'm not sure what's the point yet...

ROUTE ALL THE THINGS!!
yawjn
so tired this morning :<
And working from home, not a good combo

@JourneymanGeek I have a raspberry but not sure how to connect it to new laptop.

@Nick it is a computer.

@JourneymanGeek yes, and hardware is expensive.

@Nick you don't really need to connect it to a system to configure it

7:46 AM
I once hooked it up to my tv and browsed the internet and played minecraft but besides that nothing much.

More or less? that's what it does

@JourneymanGeek yes, but I can't wave my hands and by magic have it configured either. Why do assume everyone has a keyboard, mouse and monitor just lying around? I don't live in a lab.

@JourneymanGeek Looks like MIT Scratch :D

That said
I managed to get machines of the class set up with none of them
all you need is ssh
this thing has 2 ethernet ports and no USB or video outs ;p

8:10 AM
morning

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...yes?
this particular system is funny
the physically labelled LAN1 is enp2s0, the physically labelled LAN2 is enp1s0
because that's not confusing at all

actually
if it was 2 ports on one device it would be enp1s0 and enp1s1
oh
better than what mine has

Bob
@JourneymanGeek erm, no
two ports on one card would (probably) be enp#s#f0/enp#s#f1
p# maps to bus, s# maps to slot

that's what I said
oh
erf

Bob
8:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek So, yea. The fun thing is there's no real pattern for PCIe.
Unless you're using ancient PCI, the whole bus/slot/device/whatever thing is largely meaningless.
Which is one reason predictable network naming is so crappy.
I'll double check the PCI assignments when I get home and fix the netowkring :S

hm
Actually there's one strange thing
I'm half certain the network ports on this thing are not hotpluggable
hm, actually no

1 hour later…
Bob
9:38 AM
ok this is really bad
that server I messed up the config on?
I have the SSH keys but I don't have the root password :S
how did that even happen?!
goddammit
single user mode it is

derp :(

login keychain or biometric seem like a better options than alphanumerics you come up with yourself.
maybe devices should come in pairs. A door lock and a key :)

@Nick hmmm biometric is bad. bad bad bad. That's something you have, not something you know so only authenticates the user, not authorizes them.

Bob
it doesn't even authenticate the user because it can be stolen and reproduced

heh, yeah true

Bob
9:48 AM
/me boots in recovery mode
Give root password for maintenance (or press Control-D to continue):
o.O

maybe it's a default password

Bob
there's no such thing as a default root password

it's
@Bob no, you need to boot from a live CD, mount /etc/passwd etc.... or chroot and set it....
you know this already I suspect.

Bob
@djsmiley2k yea I think I can set init from grub

10:04 AM
oh yah the init=/bin/bash hacks
*(not a hack)

@Bob is it blank?

Bob
10:15 AM
@Burgi don't think so?

2 hours later…
12:41 PM
Does anyone have a useful bash script they can share with me?

@Nick printf "\e(0"
Or :(){:|:&};:

ok, I'll save that as a .sh with #!/bin/bash on top.

@Nick shutdown -P now

lol

@Burgi Mine are more fun :)

12:52 PM
he asked for useful

Waits for @Nick to bite ...
@Burgi They are useful. Either of them will stop @Nick posting here ;)
And he can use them as a learning experience as well...

interesting... you are right, he didn't specify who they would be useful for...

Bob
@djsmiley2k yea that's what I ended up doing
too lazy to grab a live image

should of got him to setup a reverse ssh tunnel to you
and then kerblam

1:11 PM
Well he's gone quiet so that worked ...

2 hours later…
2:45 PM
quick weird question...
the USB ports on my chromebook have a little lightning bolt over them, does that mean i can charge the laptop over USB?

Oh, hmm
Wasn't there an HNQ on that?
that someone in here answered
Geek maybe?

i don't remember seeing it...

@Blogbot not what i was after, but thanks for contributing
ok according to the foremost tech Q&A site, Quora, it is an always on port

Ahh
So it can charge things even when off

2:57 PM
yeah

Fair dos
Kinda handy I guess

meh
from what i'm reading, the device needs to be connected to the mains for the port to work
which defeats the point

@Burgi They might be charge ports
the idea is you can charge from them when off, but the charger is plugged in

anywhere i have mains power i tend to have a phone charger
but it might be useful to some people
if we get the house electrics done any time soon i'm going to get those faceplates with USB ports built in

I've got some of those
They're pretty straightforward to fit

3:08 PM
@Burgi lightning bolt would usually suggest thunderbolt
But it can also mean always-on, yes. I've only seen that symbol used for always-on once, tho.

@bertieb i'm not going to bother unless we need to do anything to the house

Fair enough

i think we only have another year there

I don't actually use them that often, funnily enough
My phone has its own charger dealie
rapid charger
somethingorother
lightning

is it an iphone?

3:11 PM
shazaam! it's charged 100%

So I use them for occasionally charging my tablet or BT speakers
Nah, OP3
Dash charge
That's the badger

the next house i'm going to get cabled up with cat6

A worthwhile endeavour

although ethernet over power would keep the missus happier

cat5e's enough :P

3:15 PM
ethernet over power is not very good

really?

@Burgi I use it
Its nowhere near the advertised speeds

@JourneymanGeek i know i was going to ask your opinion on it... :P

Its better than wifi where I live

3:18 PM
I doubt
I'm getting 300mbps on something that should run gigabit
My house wiring is old

i was going to ask, you live in an apartment block, right? could you plug one at a neighbours house and get on your LAN?

Nope
in theory it should stop at the power meter where there's a transformer

Oh hey, it's time for some Windows Updates! <game show music>
Here we go again.
...and once you get used to a high-DPI display, even a 1080p 13.3" display looks atrocious :\
(1800x1200 on a 10" display just looks so much crisper)

5:20 PM
And that also means a round of graphics driver updates, too. Updated Radeon Software on Stolas; just need to pull up GeForce Experience on Astaroth.
Also, let's not forget to check HP Support Assistant for BIOS and certain other driver updates.
I must imagine what it's like to go through this for a whole fleet of PCs in a business environment...
(at least there's orchestration tools like WSUS...)

6:05 PM
So I just found a weird issue... A laptop shows just a black screen when booting. OK, let's see if Windows loads. I install TightVNC, and connect. It doesn't detect any monitors whatsoever!
Applying updates anyways from Dell before passing it on to the hardware techs

7:41 PM
Please tell us who you work for. I do not wish to have any contact with a company who asks external users to send credit card details in an email. That is a severe break of data protection rules. — DavidPostill ♦ 35 secs ago

@DavidPostill Is there a legal mandate for the OP to reveal this information? Not too familiar with the GDPR...
(or other related regulations in other locales)
Could the OP be held legally liable in any relevant jurisdiction for failure to disclose this information?

@bwDraco what?
No, of course not
If I ask you to reveal something about your workplace (or even the name of the workplace) and how stuff is done there, you absolutely don't have to reveal anything. Obviously.
That's like... common sense?
Unrelatedly
Does anyone here have experience with Ubuntu Mate?

@DavidPostill Do you intend to suspend the user if they fail to disclose this information?

@bwDraco ...why would he dude
like
why

(because AIUI there's no regulation or SE rule that mandates blowing the whistle in a situation like this)

8:03 PM
I'm just winding him up.

If I ran into something like this, would it be irresponsible or immoral of me to just ignore it?

I've pointed out his company is breaking data protection. It's up to him what he does with that information.

Q: Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?

SmudgeA security auditor for our servers has demanded the following within two weeks: A list of current usernames and plain-text passwords for all user accounts on all servers A list of all password changes for the past six months, again in plain-text A list of "every file added to the server from re...

Just gonna leave that here...

welp, his business place is also mouldy...

Q: Can mold in a building cause fatigue?

C-dizzlePretty much what the title says, can mold in a building cause fatigue? I've been working with the same company for almost 11 years. The first 2 and a half years I was at another building until they moved my department to another one. My health at that building was never in question, didn't seem...

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a medical condition where people in a building suffer from symptoms of illness or feel unwell for no apparent reason. The symptoms tend to increase in severity with the time people spend in the building, and improve over time or even disappear when people are away from the building. The main identifying observation is an increased incidence of complaints of symptoms such as headache, eye, nose, and throat irritation, fatigue, and dizziness and nausea. These symptoms appear to be linked to time spent in a building, though no specific illness or cause can be...

hmmm?

Can the SE Community Team reach out to this guy?
I suspect he needs to find another job soon...

8:37 PM
@bwDraco Which one?

The mold, the security auditor, or the credit card one?

the credit card is the mould one.

Ahh. Don't think SE will reach out for that question

lol and @bwDraco don't ever look at the workplace
nearly everyone who posts there is in a toxic workplace.

Q: How can I reboot my phone without the power or volume buttons?

rahuldottechTitle is pretty self-explanatory. My phone's power and volume buttons don't work. The home button does. It's a Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus. This phone has always had a tendency to crash unless rebooted occasionally. Now that the power button doesn't work, I won't be able to turn the phone on if it crashe...

Shameless plug, in case anyone here knows a solution
@CanadianLuke lmao

10:16 PM
It doesn't power on, on inserting usb?

10:38 PM
@djsmiley2k I'm thinking of writing a script
That posts "Update your CV and start looking for new jobs" to random Workplace questions
3
and posts "Yes, this is definitely a scam" to any Q on Finance with "Scam" in the title or body
"Restore data from backups (you have backups, right?) and reinstall" to SU Qs with "data"
"Check your SLA and contact your provider" to SF Qs
"Book an appointment at the Genius Bar" to Apple
"My father's son is me" to Puzzling
Random Unicode characters with a title that looks Esolang-y to PPCG whatever it's called now
"Do a session 0 and use the Same Page Tool" to RPG
"Just talk to them honestly and non-confrontationally about your feelings" to IPS
...is there any other site on the network I can insult by tarring them with a broad brush? ;-P

11:24 PM
@bertieb Sounds logical to me...
