@Stormblessed Jenayah has been kicked out (multiple times?).

I kicked myself out, thank you very much

@Jenayah I wonder if that's a record...

possibly
except for FAQ questions on main Meta

There was this comment, after all:
You know, you don't have to provide every angle you think of right? — Möoz Jul 24 '18 at 5:21

eh. I upvoted that.
And... I wouldn't be surprised if you did, too :^)

Et tu Brute?

Does that star means you did? :P

@Jenayah It means it was a good call, but happens to be not true in this particular case. I.e. it's something I would do (and have done in other such instances) but for whatever reason didn't do in this case.

Well, it's not too late ;p

Won't make much of a difference at this point.

so do votes on super old answers, and still.

12:44 AM
@Jenayah Reputation

met ones as well

In fact, I just had three old posts upvoted.
Perhaps a serial voter is on the loose.
@Jenayah Theoretically, answer votes can affect the consensus.

true

In any case, I am enjoying the reread...
Anyway, there might be a flaw in the system if two answers asserting opposites both have significantly positive scores.

mmmmmh?

12:50 AM
Top answer says it's not a duplicate and has +9. Second answer says it is a duplicate and has +8. That means that either some voters are confused, or the answers are being voted on by different pools of voters.

possibly
that stuff went on for ages

What's the other option?

mh?

You said "possibly", implying that it's also possibly not.

well then yeah
the other option is that it's possibly not
(I'm super helpful am I?)

12:53 AM
But how else can you mathematically explain the scores?
@Jenayah Very.

how 'bout no math at 2am
especially when it's 3 am in six minutes

Fair enough.
So we have to adapt this:

Q: Scifi short story where everyone's lives are recorded, and based on this everyone is ranked at every different skill there could conceivably be

tinysnails9I read this story in the last 10 years. It is a scifi short story, probably published in Giganotosaurus or some other sci fi short story collective. Definitely published online. What's the "RSS feed"?

3:24 AM
@Stormblessed It's... a feed? What do you mean?
It's a linky link which can be accessed to get the latest updates of the associated feed

3:38 AM
@Gallifreyan RSS stands for something like "Really Simple Syndication." (I suppose I could look it up.) I don't know how much used it is anymore, but people could subscribe to all kinds of different websites and topics, and their reader would get notifications and present a stream of them.
Sorry, something went wonky with the mobile UI.

accord with the ancient. It will be seen above that
in our early English versions the initial letter is i,
representing the Hebrew yod. This marks a transi-
tion taking place in the pronunciation of j, which,
being merely an initial i or y, was intermingled in
the old dictionaries with the vowel i. It is not
easy to determine the precise period when the

@Alex I just had assumed it was pronounced that way due to it being in an American book

@Stormblessed In case they don't want to be publicly associated with those comments.
@Stormblessed English speakers usually pronounce words with the "J" sound even though the original word was supposed to be pronounced with a "Y" sound.
Think of all the "J" names in the Bible: Jacob, Joseph, Judah, Jeroboam, Jehoshaphat, Jeremiah, etc. In the original Hebrew those names are all pronounced with a "Y" sound. But once they were transliterated with a "J", people pronounce them with the "J" sound.

@Jenayah Exactly. It doesn't make any sense without the "Alien". Can't remove the sentence, don't put a comma.

@Jenayah The point is that the name is an integral part of the sentence, not a parenthetical that belongs between commas.

Of football? On average, I watch one match once every four years.
But World Cup 1998 was kind of a big thing that stayed for long. And where I'm from... Without giving all away, 'cause personal info and all, let's just say there was extra reason for that to be remembered :P

Is it our policy to change question marks to periods after answers are accepted?

@Stormblessed not a policy I know of, but some people do
hey, wtf, that's my answer.

@Stormblessed You...don't need an effin' policy for all kinds of reasonable edits really. ;-)
Either you're answering the question or you aren't. I doubt acceptence has anything to do with it. Though, that is kind of a super-minor-tiny improvement.

Are 2K users supposed to “Avoid trivial edits”?

Only if they "clutter up the front-page", I guess. ;-)

@Stormblessed like, bumping posts only for italics or a comma while leaving other stuf unfixed? Yes. (wasn't thinking of SFF, though)
@NapoleonWilson "improvement", meh. When I'm unsure of the answer to begin with, I'd rather not open with a period... Internet conditioned me to think of periods as being assertive.

11:12 PM
Heh, the rollback explanation is kind of ironic, though. ;-)

@Jenayah what’s unfixed in the answer?

@NapoleonWilson how so?

@Jenayah Wow, I heard people say exclamation marks are assertive. Now the periods, too? Those're like...the epitome of neutrality. We all gotta formulate our sentences as questiosn now?

@Stormblessed In the one you just edited? Not much, though a date would help. In the thread overall? One of the answers has terrible formatting

@Jenayah That's an exercise left open for the inclined SciFi enthusiast. ;-)

11:16 PM
@NapoleonWilson Nope, but I don't edit out the "maybes" in my story-ID answers, so I'd rather not have others doing it for me.

Well, at least you seem to have a clear stylistic and tonal reason for it and that's commendable.

It’s weird, that book Eon in the answer I edited has had a lot of names
The copy I read just was called Eon, but it’s had at least two different subtitles
Very good book

Heh, did you just do a totally trivial edit on a 5 year old answer by Valorum as "retaliation"?

DannyMcGI started watching this film late at night a few years ago. UK. I suddenly leaped up and grabbed the remote and switched it off. This woman was setting off to have sex with a bloke and the viewpoint switched to inside her, there was snarling noises and rows of teeth in her vagina waiting to bite...

oh, nevermind
The way I read it, Stormblessed read the book, wondered whether SFF had stuff on it, and fixxed said stuff?

Or that.

In other news, my video game answer got a third downvote. Perhaps this is a sign that I should only stick to book answers.

@Alex lolwut
people really hate you

Happens when you complain about it in chat. ;-)

11:35 PM
ahah

And another one...

@Jenayah correct

@Alex which one?

@Alex whaaat
gee

11:37 PM
That's a trick, don't link it! ;-P

One can vote how they like, but still... DVs should mostly go to unhelpful stuff
@NapoleonWilson it's on HNQ.

@Jenayah Ah! That makes more sense.
Or well, it actually doesn't. HNQ people don't downvote.

@NapoleonWilson oh. Right.
We're back to Alex haters then.

You never know what stuff gets linked in the secret parallel universe. ;-)

A: In the "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" videogame, what potion is used to sabotage Umbridge's speakers?

AlexIn the video game the Patils say that it is Babbling Beverage. You can see this in this clip of the video game walkthrough:

Isn’t it because it’s exactly the same as Valorum’s answer? Can’t see timestamps (ducking mobile site), so I can’t tell which came first

Valorum’s preceded mine by four minutes.

@Stormblessed Valorum's, but by four minutes

None did, they were simultaneous. But yes, Valorum's is certainly better.

Oh, certainly is. Doesn't warrant DVs on the other, though

But a standard user wouldn’t see that without specifically looking for it since the basic timestamps are the same.

11:41 PM
But they're not standard users. They're your haters club! :)

It’d be a fine answer if Valorum weren’t first imo

Well Valorum’s wasn’t posted yet when I started.

YEah four minutes is enough to open the video, watch till the relevant part and not notice the "1 new answer" banner
banner which doesn't show on mobile

Not just one video. That scene was in part 15 or something.

you get what I mean

11:46 PM
@Jenayah Frankly, even if I notice that banner, I don't really give a crap if I've just gone the length of writing an answer.

Exactly.

@NapoleonWilson when I don't miss it, I look at it, especially since I'm mostly doing story-ID. Sometimes the answer that was just posted is better than your generic title + IMDb/Goodreads summary + trailer + a review or something, so I'lll drop it
On comis stuff I probably wouldn't, I guess...

Granted, ID FTL.

Q: In Prometheus, is it possible that the trilobite which attacked the Engineer was protecting Shaw?

releseabeIs there any indication that (perhaps in some script version), as in Alien 4, that the trilobite, being the offspring of Shaw, recognizes her and that motivates it to attack the Engineer which, in this case, saves her life? I realize that it seems pretty mindless, basically a machine for creating...

ID F*cks the Laws?

11:54 PM
Oh, noice...and true! But no.

then I don't know... ID Faster than light doesn't make much sense

Faster than Light, obviously. It's SciFi.SE, and you're answering super fast.

oh.

Well, not really, no. ;-)

wait, what?

11:57 PM
Don't worry about it, I like your's much better anyway.

:P
still curious though
Don't know why I'm getting a down vote...I did try a Google first but I kept getting stuff about vampires — DannyMcG 23 mins ago
Teeth is the first Google result I receive when I search for "vagina teeth movie". Please note this is not the short of thing I typically search for. — Dosco Jones 11 mins ago
I was 'scaredy cat' to put vagina into Google so I was just doing 'woman with sharp teeth' — DannyMcG 4 mins ago
That's... almost cute :^)

The cat thing?
