@LeakyNun Sleep sort
I wonder what time complexity that has...

oh nice
wow it really works
it's like magic

2 hours later…
1:25 PM
@LeakyNun :| of course it does

lol

@JoKing pseudo-linear (polynomial) apparently
I think

omg it works
@ASCII-only so it's not linear you think it's O(n^2)
O it's because the time has a direct relationship with the value.
this is no different than using a min heap
it's O(logn) at best. unremarkable

hey

2:22 PM
@Rick no linear is polynomial technically
Idk. I could swear I saw pseudo-polynomial somewhere

@ASCII-only that's a good point anything with a variable is technically a polynomial

@LeakyNun doesn't always work over there... :P

@Rick incorrect
If it's just variables with integral powers, then maybe

@ASCII-only I get this mixed up sometimes, a monomial is not a polynomial. but a binomial and trinomial are considered polynomial.
but linear O(n) comes across as a monomial asymptotically speaking
we throw away all combinations of + and - and just keep the largest term

2:40 PM
@Rick since when
"a monomial is a polynomial with one term"

@ASCII-only You're right. A monomial is a polynomial.

@ASCII-only Which is a bit counter-intuitive, to be fair. Using the same terminology, every program is a polyglot...

3:01 PM
@Dennis math doesn't have the most consistent terminology :/

True. For example, linear polynomials are not linear.

Well actually idk. It does seem to have inconsistent notation, not sure about terminology
@Dennis wait wat O_o

Pretty much everywhere, linear means a function f for which f(ax + by) = af(x) + bf(y).
In contrast, p(x) = ax + b is considered linear even when b != 0, although p(0 + 0) = b != 2b = f(0) + f(0).

@Dennis Wikipedia says they're called linear forms
Also I guess that's because it's two different meanings of linear (I guess linear polynomials have that name just because it's a simpler concept (as in if you called it anything else there'd be more to explain) to teach to middle school students)

Still not sure if terminology is inconsistent? :P

3:11 PM
100% sure now >_>
"linear polynomials are not linear"
Even that is confusing without clarification >_>

3:42 PM
@ASCII-only so I was right? :P

@MilkyWay90 Thu'um

@Rick no :|

3:58 PM
NOoo...! XO

4:10 PM
@Adám Correct (Although the language is not called Thu'um, it's commonly called dovahzul
Thu'um is a word in it meaning "Shout", i think

I am thinking of posing a fastest-code challenge based loosely on this piece of code: bpaste.net/show/b8d27ccc46d0
are they any plausible method for speeding up this root finding?

Q: Print last inputted element brainf**k

jeanI have one line of inputted numbers. How can I print last inputted element in brainf**k?

7:13 PM
@flawr can you confirm

Why is a hexagon 6-sided and not 16-sided

@MilkyWay90 ? :)

@MilkyWay90 Wrong question. You want to ask why "hex" is base 16 and not base 6.

that would be a hexadecagon

7:21 PM
And the answer is of course that people use the shorthand "hex" for the proper "hexadecimal", i.e. 6+10

Well, hexadec is 16, no?

@H.PWiz yes

Anonymous
@Adám hexadec is too many characters, and 6 isn't a useful base in cs :P

@Adám Ah true

I think my challenge will be about finding real roots of sparse polynomials
my polynomials have exactly 4 non-zero coeffficients
and exactly 2 real roots
but are of high degree

7:47 PM
@Riker lol yep. customs are often quite clogged during the week.
I never (physically) shop across the boarder (except online) as I think it just takes too much time (and whenever possible I'd like to support small local businesses), but I can understand that some people do it, because quite often the exact same product is just twice as expensive in ch for no reason. (It is really bad with things like shampoo and other hygiene products, newspapers/magazines, but also other things.)
And I also understand people living outside of ch and having a job here, as the salaries are usually a little bit higher. But unfortunately this situation just leads to a lot of road traffic.
(And a lot of animosity.)
For some reason gas always seems to be cheaper in ch than e.g. in italy.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

The purpose of this challenge is to receive an airfoil number as input, and plot the profile of the airfoil. Background information: 4-digit NACA air...

What are the qualities that make a popularity-contest challenge successful?
Specifically, if I am trying to have a challenge where plotting/graphing is the purpose of the challenge, is there a good way to run it as a pop-con? Other possible solutions are to just have the user calculate/output points, but that seems less fun than actually plotting

@Adám Cool!
But Chrome gives me "Apps, extensions, and user scripts cannot be added from this website"
You may want to consider making a chrome extension on the chrome web store
@JPeroutek I've seen that pop-cons are normally on-topic when they can be converted to a code golf trivially
For example, "Add two numbers" would work for a pop-con
But it would be a duplicate in practice
Also, you have to have an objective criterion when telling voters what to vote for (e.g. can't be "more creative")

Hmm. So in the context of my recently posted sandbox challenge, I don't really see a way to have an objective voting criteria. In that case, would code-challenge be more appropriate?

11:37 PM
@MilkyWay90 no
@MilkyWay90 just get tampermonkey
Or change your Chrome settings
@MilkyWay90 no
@JPeroutek how would it be scored
