Q: I'm not getting badge/privilege notifications any more

Monica CellioIn the last week or two I've noticed, on more than one SE site, that I'm no longer getting those banner notices for newly-earned badges or privileges. I've seen this on both Firefox 12.0 on OS 10.6 and Firefox 3.6 on Windows XP. It is possible that this is due to some plugin or browser update s...

now if only i could get @ه ه to answer one of my questions the circle would be complete ;)

3:06 AM
@vram I dont see any circle

3:21 AM
@هه close enough

How does vram know about Vram's history?

2 hours later…
4:55 AM
@DoubleAA I dunno but I think it's a pretty cool coincidence that there are two Yodeyans who found attachment to the name VRAM- I have yet to meet another such person in real life!

Q: PLEASE promote the Launch Party far and wide

Isaac Moses As you hopefully know by now, we're celebrating our recent launch out of beta with an online radio launch party this coming Sunday. This is going to be both a fun and edifying celebration for community members and a unique, exciting opportunity to promote our site and community to the wider wor...

^^^ It's not too late to email/blog/FB/t/g+/etc. this

@IsaacMoses Have you seen this??

A: Formatting Sandbox

George Edisonhaving trouble getting rid of the sliver between the images (wrapping them in a <h1></h1> helps.)

@HodofHod No. Are you referring to the whole question or that answer?

@IsaacMoses b'chlal. specifically, the comments to that answer.

@HodofHod Wacky

Btw, I'm confused. I've seen several places on meta where the devs say that SE doesn't officially support RTL. What exactly does that mean? Seeing as how much of RTL works, what would be different if they did support it? </noob question>
@IsaacMoses Close as too localized?
3
Q: Does the proposed Aliyah.SE fit better here?

Monica CellioI just saw the Aliyah.SE proposal and wondered why those questions wouldn't belong here. One possibility is that not all those who make aliyah are religious (or Jewish) and maybe some would think they don't belong here. On the other hand, we just had a challenge a couple weeks ago for questions...

Or since it was valid at the time, leave it?

2:39 PM
@HodofHod "Valid at the time" = "too localized," I'd say

@IsaacMoses fair nuff. any ideas on my above q?

@HodofHod Which?

@HodofHod Sorry; I know nothing about RTL. @msh210's your man for that stuff

@IsaacMoses kthx :D
On to more important topics! Should we get a m.y chat easter egg?
@msh210 Ah hello!

2:55 PM
@HodofHod Hola!
¿Cómo estás?

@msh210 muy bien, gracias a Dios!
and yourself?

@HodofHod Very well. B"H.
@HodofHod No matter what you do now -- as far as I can tell -- if you quote Hebrew text, the paragraph will be aligned on the left. (So the last, short line will appear on the left beneath the others.)

@msh210 ^^ look to your right

@HodofHod You're online now. Does that mean you'll still have access to comms in 3 hours?

@IsaacMoses I probably will. Oh! I missed that we rescheduled. Yes, I will almost certainly be available. Anything in particular you want me for?

3:03 PM
@HodofHod That's because your browser's treating the (direction-neutral) characters ' 1' as connected to the RTL text before them. (I'm not sure why -- I'd think they should be considered part of the overarching (base) LTR text.)

@HodofHod Rescheduled?

@IsaacMoses I seem to recall that we had previously discussed it being later in the day. Perhaps my memory is just faulty.

@HodofHod Could be a timezone thing.

@IsaacMoses Doubt it. I'm just confused. Oh well.

@HodofHod Would you like to call in and offer brief divrei beracha/lechaim/torah?

3:21 PM
hmmm

@HodofHod If you have nothing planned (and no time to plan), I have @Dave's d'var Tora. He asked if someone else can read it. I was going to. Would you like to? I can say something else (albeit far less substantive) of my own.

@msh210 I'm right now trying to figure out how I'm going to call in. I don't think I can call and be online at the same time, unfortunately.

@HodofHod You can call in and listen to the whole show that way

I may just have to do that. I'll see if I can get access to another phone for a while. How long is the whole thing supposed to be? an hour?

3:28 PM
@HodofHod Yes.

@msh210 Is it being recorded?

@HodofHod You betcha

@IsaacMoses Cool!

3:46 PM
@HodofHod I need to know (the answer to my question just above) by, let's say, 1:45 Eastern, please.

@IsaacMoses What will be taking place in the chat room, exactly? (And how am I so clueless about what's going on?? oy!)

@msh210 @HodofHod: @WAF and I do, too.

@msh210 I'm a little bit nervous about doing a dvar torah, to be honest :o

@HodofHod Whatever people want
@HodofHod Even someone else's?

@HodofHod Yet it seems, somehow, more appropriate than playing a Metallica song.

3:54 PM
@msh210 Something to which I might be better suited, actually. ;)
@IsaacMoses Yeah, I never liked/was good at public speaking.
Before you go "hey, don't you give shiurim, and weren't you in a play?"

@HodofHod hey, don't you give shiurim, and weren't you in a play?
too late

my shiurim are very conversational, and plays are easy: just ignore the crowd

@HodofHod Can't you ignore the crowd that you won't be able to see?

Not when you have to speak _to_ them. It's not a nerves thing, it's an incredible fear that I'm not presenting in a way that the audience can assimilate.

@HodofHod OK; think about it, and let us know. Maybe @msh210 can email you the D"T to help you decide. If you just want to call in and converse for a minute, you can do that too

4:00 PM
@IsaacMoses I may. I can call and listen for a while and then just hit '1'?

@HodofHod Not sure.

@IsaacMoses guess we'll find out! Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be fine. (You sure your mother is unavailable? ;))

You can call in and listen for a while, then ping @WAF in this room or the other, and tell him [the last two digits of] the number you're calling from

are you expecting so many lubavitchers that you won't be able to distinguish between their numbers?
</joke>

@HodofHod What, do all of your numbers start with 718-770-? :)
2

4:03 PM
@IsaacMoses give or take, yes!

@HodofHod Seriously, is 770 an exchange for Crown Heights?

@IsaacMoses Nope, but it should be!
But seriously, many, many, lubavitchers incorporate 770 into their phone numbers. Both my cell and GV contain a 770, although the former is actually unintentional

@IsaacMoses Aha.... Now I see...

@IsaacMoses I can do e-mail it to you, @HodofHod, if you like.

@msh210 @AdamMosheh truthfully, I'd say that it's primarily there and secondarily here

and we're not calling it an "asifa"!

@IsaacMoses - Why not??

heheheh

@AdamMosheh too soon, man, too soon

Will the launch party shiur be recorded?

4:44 PM
@AdamMosheh The whole hour of audio will be archived as an mp3

@IsaacMoses Great, thanks. I probably won't be able to listen to it, but I might be able to hang out in the chat room for some part of it.

@AdamMosheh You can also listen by calling in and not pressing 1 when prompted
@AdamMosheh Note that some comments in chat may seem out of context without the audio

@IsaacMoses What phone number do I call to listen in?

@IsaacMoses Do you think Rabbi Student would permit calling the Launch Party an Asifah?

@AdamMosheh I doubt he would 'asur' it.

@AdamMosheh Not sure how that's relevant
2

@IsaacMoses Because he is the scholar-in-residence at the launch party and knows halacha better than I do.

@AdamMosheh Who said anything about Halacha?

@Manishearth welcome

Hey there :)

@IsaacMoses whos gonna be taking the calls at the launch party today?

@هه WAF, Rabbi Gil Student, and me

OK, I gotta go deal with life for a little before I enclose myself in radioland. I'll check in here a bit before the show.

@IsaacMoses I don't think so. Thank you for offering, though

@HodofHod okay, I've got it then

@IsaacMoses any way to get rid of the annoying ads on the side of the blogtalkradio site?

@ArghMo It doesn't look like you did so... but if you did then I have no idea why.

Q: Is using a Kindle on Shabbat permitted?

Monica CellioA Kindle is an e-book reader that uses "e-ink" rather than an LCD screen. It has physical controls to turn pages. If left unused it enters a sleep mode, and you can return to reading by moving a button. Returning from sleep mode causes a light (LED? not sure what it is, but not heat-emitting) ...

@MonicaCellio thanks; I've added it to meta.judaism.stackexchange.com/a/1162 also

@msh210 thanks - hadn't seen the list there.

7:02 PM
Thank you @IsaacMoses!

@Alex Perhaps they would have all called in in the last 2 minutes anyway though.

Many thanks for our awesome theme music to New-York-based producer, vibraphonist, and pianist Ben Portner. You can find him online at myspace.com/benportner or email him at portb648@newschool.edu.

@Alex Oh, is that where my local shaliach of his got it from. Shoulda guessed as much.
Hm, apparently I speak much too quietly/unclearly. Maybe you shoulda done it after all, @HodofHod.

@IsaacMoses you were quite the articulate host. Thanks!

@Alex Okay, that makes me wonder....

@Dave I'm hoping to have them soon from blogtalkradio. I'll put them in the show notes when I do

@IsaacMoses: odd, it says there 981 for me

Oh, man! You could still hear me after the show ended! I could have done the rest of the credits!

@IsaacMoses Ooh, are we counting down(/up)?

7:25 PM
@Alex Hmm. Maybe my view includes deleteds
@msh210 @HodofHod You both sounded great, and it was great to hear both of your voices!

@IsaacMoses Thanks. It was good to hear yours too (and y'all's who spoke). Perhaps one day you'll get to hear one of us again, Isaac.

@Alex Thanks for the rishona reminder, too.
@msh210 B"H I hope to meet all y'all in person sooner or later

@IsaacMoses Thank you, back at you! Sorry for my very Chassidic pronunciation of "Hod" :D
@IsaacMoses Amen!

@HodofHod Oh I didn't notice. Did you say hade?

@HodofHod diversity FTW

grammar q, anyone?

@HodofHod Shoot.

@msh210 ShU"T?

@IsaacMoses He seems to have a Sh, I was just sayin' someone might have a T.

...the daughter of Rav Chisda (Rava’s wife, whom Bar Hedya predicted would die.) The immortal question: who or whom?

@IsaacMoses True. But (and many people here know this already but some may not) Isaac started mi.yodeya before it was a SE site of the sort we know it as today, recruited the original users, posted the 1st questions, talked to SE about the m.y's joining SE, wrote the area51.se proposal, recruited followers thereof, pushed for enhancements etc. all along the way, and, doubtless, did many things I'm unaware of. He's devoted so many hours to this site, purely in the interest of harbatzas Tora.
3
@HodofHod Who.

8:12 PM
@IsaacMoses Pleasure. I hate listening to myself talk (as I suspect many others do as well), but I couldn't resist listening to the playback. I usually express myself much better in writing than in speech. I hope my point was clear enough, though, even if I did sound half-asleep for some reason.

@msh210 has devoted a comparable number of hours to the site, and possibly more, without being as loud about it or making grandiose claims in his profile :)

@IsaacMoses Har. You know that's not true.
(I do make grandiose claims in my profile. :-))
@Alex (Hearing it again now,) I like it actually.

8:37 PM
@msh210 I had a similar progression of reactions. Try listening on a system that has a subwoofer

@IsaacMoses I don't even know what that is, or what system might have one.

@msh210 some stereo and computer sound systems have an extra speaker for bass sounds that rests on the floor. It helps with stuff like emphasizing the beat
A subwoofer (or "sub") is a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker, which is dedicated to the reproduction of low-pitched audio frequencies known as the "bass". The typical frequency range for a subwoofer is about 20–200 Hz for consumer products, below 100 Hz for professional live sound, Subwoofers are intended to augment the low frequency range of loudspeakers covering higher frequency bands. Subwoofers are made up of one or more woofers in a loudspeaker enclosure capable of withstanding air pressure while resisting deformation. Subwoofer enclosures come in a variety of designs, i...

@IsaacMoses ah. I don't own such, I'm afraid. Actually, considering how much I like emphasized bass beat, I'm not afraid.

... but even without, that tune has grown on me a great deal, to the point that I'm quite taken with it.

@HodofHod Just rearrange the phrase so it is a sentence not a question, and decide if you would use he or him. In this case: Bar Hedya predicted HE would die. So it's 'who'.
Alternatively, consider 'whom I called'. Rearranged, it becomes: 'I called HIM'. So it's 'whom'.

9:01 PM
I just said my le chayim for mi yodeya
Letoirah, chuppah, u-maasim tovim!

@AdamMosheh ...or something.

@msh210 @IsaacMoses Did I handle this OK? judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/16786/…
@HodofHod ^^

@DoubleAA I've clarified, I hope, that it's his text. Sorry: I shoulda noticed only part of the post had been converted.

@msh210 @DoubleAA Thank you!

@msh210 The whole thing was converted. He just edited it now.

@DoubleAA Oh! no wonder, then. :-)

@HodofHod Or consider: "none of this would be here without HIM"

9:55 PM
@IsaacMoses @WAF nice use of canned applause and the pouring-clinking sound, incidentally.
