Ben
12:03 AM
Welp... This could not have gone worse.
Trying to update my software ended up in disaster recovery mode, to the point where a complete redo... From bedrock... Is the best solution.

@Ben :C

Ben
12:19 AM

Ben
12:39 AM
I just realised I haven't eaten in two days.
DX

Ben
Would be ideal

Have you tried putting food in your mouth and moving your jaw up and down?

Ben
Been doing plenty of the latter, just without the former

Ah. The trick is to put the food in first.

Ben
12:43 AM
That'd be it. Shall have to give that a shot

Ben
Also something I'm lacking, Lol.
I actually have a Vitamin D deficiency
Though that's primarily due to my work life. Indoors for 10-12 hours a day

Ben, presumably:

Ben
@BESW That is a more recent photo of me, yes.

Try eating more food containing the letter D
Dates, Cod, Doritos, dried fruit, Gouda, dumplings

Ben
12:52 AM
Dragonsteak, Daylight... dill pickles

Ben
[Writes the letter "D" on a piece of paper] Does this count?

Xylophagia does not count, no.

Ben
@BESW Ah. no D in that. Fair enough

Paper doesn't contain it, but a drawing does

Ben
1:05 AM
@MikeQ Very strong argument

Ben
1:27 AM
Ok... Barb, +3 dex, +4 con, Dual wielder (+1 AC for two weapons), Cloak of protection (+1 AC) leading to 19.
I think I dropped an AC from choosing a feat instead of the final ASI.

hey there @DavyJones, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Ben
Has anyone heard of a Tome of stat increase?
D&D
cc @NautArch I may have accidentally omitted thatr

1:47 AM
@Ben Sure, 3.5 had them.

Ben
Ok. It's possible we've been given them for this one off
meaning my Minotaurs stats are about to change again
> Other Changes: Only 1 of each Tome/Manual of stat increase exists, and disappears for 100 years after each use (that is, it gets used, then leaves your possession)

That's... a much more effective throttle than 3.5 had on them.
Though it does reinforce the "squabbling over limited rewards" element of D&D that led some of my friends to think they couldn't play RPGs together at all, ever.

Ben
I'd believe that haha. But honestly I've never heard of them before, so it might be a homebrew rule

3.5 made the bonus non-stacking, which limited hoarding them. But it also made them craftable (because crafting rules exist, thus all non-unique items must be craftable) and while they tried to throttle abuse by levying a huge XP cost on the crafting... they also published splat which made XP crafting costs fungible with gold.
So epic characters could run around with a permanent, nondispellable +5 bonus to all their stats, at the cost of... effectively pocket change for someone of that level.

Ben
Oh dang... 22,500 gold to spend on additional resources outside of those initial 6 magic items...
Time to go shopping...

Ben
2:19 AM
Could (potentially) buy an animated shield...

Ben
2:36 AM
Noop. Bracers of Defense. +2 AC automatically when wearing no armour or shield. Poifik

2:54 AM
@Ben Yes, Ben, they are in 5e. What stat do you want increased?
@Ben Ben, there is a question on max armor class that shows you a way around the "100 years" deal on tomes

Luck. Always max out luck.

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Well, it depends on which is available. I asked the GM and while they didn't give me an exact straight answer, I believe they're to be shared. People can claim them, but if they do, it means another cannot use them.

@MikeQ Hell to the yes.
@Ben Ben, the tomes are there. Which stat do you want increased? They are all in the DMG.

Ben
But if that is the case, I could go for Wisdom - to increase my Storm Barb damage. If not, Con/Dex to increase AC

Tome of Understanding, very rare
Wisdom
Manual of Quickness of Action (dex) and Manual of Bodily Health for con
both very rare
@Ben check out the answers to this question about pumping AC
33
Q: What is the highest possible AC?

DalamalAssuming you are level 20, and have access to any magic item, how high can you get AC (permanently or for a set duration)? Constraints: Magic items are those on the tables in the D&D 5th Edition DMG. Spells, skills, feats and abilities available to a player character are eligible for use/consi...

Ben
3:07 AM
Ring of jumping and/or ring of falling....

@Ben Ring of feather fall?

Ben
Lol yeah

@Ben Ring of feather fall is rare
ring of jumping Uncommon
Also, it's good for aggressive characters
At level 20, nice addition to your "attack and kill 'em" barb.
With your really high strength,, that jump being tripled is kind of neat

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Few unique characters in answer (86): Should my fighter really punch that werewolf? by skittles dude on rpg.SE

@SmokeDetector I already flagged it for the mods

3:19 AM
Deleted.

@nitsua60 we still good for saturday?

Ben
I have the DMG :)
@KorvinStarmast That's what I thought too... thanks for the confirmation :D
I guess I'm just building a wishlist for now lol

@Ben Hoping the Gestalt with Mike works out. I have been getting to know my proposed character. Should be fun

Ben
@KorvinStarmast What was your character?

Monk (shadow) / Cleric (Trickery)
Human, Observant feat. urchin background. (And a bit of a fraudster/smuggler/ all around con man)
@Ben Or woman. Have not decided on Gender yet

4:20 AM
hey there @RyanThompson, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

Ben
@KorvinStarmast Intriguing :D

@Ben @goodguy5 I summoned yall to the back room chat to continue these important discussions

Ben
I'm thinking I could go either way too... and it might affect which alternate class I take Sorcerer and fighter/something else

Ben
4:40 AM
@NautArch this is the style I was thinking of for "Flying Raging Electric Moose"

Ben
4:59 AM
@nitsua60 I agree with you here rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/135496/…
Sure it's low quality, due to lack of effort on the OP's part, but it's not unclear or too broad.

6 hours later…
11:15 AM
Hi, is the RPG games chat or am I in the wrong place?

this is the rpg stack chat
we discuss rpgs

@Biomage Hello! Yes this is the chat I was talking about in your question

I asked a question and was pointed here, it was about whether there are any game-breaking race/class combos for the 5e Campaign, Curse of Strahd?
@Sdj
* @Sdjz Hi!

ah, that question

We should probably move to another room to avoid spoiling people

11:17 AM
I'm not sure how to do that but I happy to do so!

2 hours later…
1:30 PM
@KorvinStarmast I am.

1:49 PM
@Ben I want a ring if falling now lol

makes you fall faster?
actually, that'd be a great cursed item.
Acts as a Ring of Featherfalling for the first.... 10-20 feet
Then doubles fall damage taken after that, as you accelerate towards the ground
Hrmm... actually, I'd rather maximize the damage dice than double damage.
less math and similar statistic effect

2:18 PM
Indeed, but man would that be brutal in a very specific circumstance lol

as are most cursed items

Very true.

such as bag of devouring

Can we VtC this question? I think right now personally that this is either unclear or too broad. Either way there are issues that need to be worked out.
At least by my reading.

It looks fine to me
"how can PCs detect jackalweres pre level 7?"

2:27 PM
@goodguy5 This would be fine, except it is simultaneously asking for story suggestions

@goodguy5 Except they had a huge side question about why the town was the only one in the area left, which is a very different question

oh? is it? I thought those were just to facilitate the detection issue

Since they clarified though I have removed the offending content.

oh okay... so it's good?

@Miniman FYI I've just dismissed a comment flag by you. Nothing wrong with the flag, I appreciate you bringing the situation to our attention, just that the comment doesn't need to get deleted so my only other option is to dismiss the flag.

2:33 PM
@goodguy5 I think it should be good now yes.

Y'all are good

Though the edit invalidates the two answers already given (which shows the dangers in adding "side questions" to your question).
The only other option was to remove the other parts and just leave the "side question" which would likely be closed as POB until further work was done (if anything could even be done) so I went with the option that allowed the question to remain open and that gets to the heart of what OP wanted to actually ask.

I mean, Truthberg is a good answer

@goodguy5 Yeah that seems like a really good suggestion.
But the rest of that answer is not relevant anymore.

effffffffffffffffffffffffffff
I just accidentally signed myself up for something at work.

2:39 PM
@goodguy5 oh dear...

there's an old code function that we're phasing out.

So, I suggested in a conference call "Can we mark the deprecated flag on that to help with the rollout?"

And my manager responded "Yea, Goodguy5. You can do that."
Then smugly looked at me over our cubicle walls.

That's a classic

@goodguy5 beautiful

yea. the "problem" is that I don't know HOW to do it lol

2:55 PM
@goodguy5 this sounds like it will be fun for you lol
Boss: "It will be a good learning experience!"

@Rubiksmoose I'm not sure what they're really trying to do in that question. I've got an answer waiting in the wings about trusting in the players to come up with a plan.

@NautArch My take was that they wanted to make sure they weren't giving them an insurmountable challenge but that is a very good point. I hope this doesn't mean that they will railroad the team towards this solution.
I think that asnwer would be very helpful personally (though for completion obviously you should talk about the other solutions)

I hate trying to do anything small scale and quick in this language we use.

3:10 PM
@Rubiksmoose I may provide another solution (moonbeam!), but mostly I just want to tell him to trust his players to come up withs omething clever and roll with it if it's reasonable.
...and they want a specific solution. time for a frame challenge!

3:24 PM
@NautArch I thought about moonbeam as well, but that would also harm non-shapechangers so not ideal as a test for random viallagers lol. Good for fighting them once identified though!

@Rubiksmoose oh snap.
yeah, i'm taking that out.
it'll massacre the village

@NautArch literally lol
@NautArch hey but if you kill the villagers first you have technically thwarted the Jackelwere lol

@Rubiksmoose the evil methodology.
they also still need to find a druid
that 2nd question removal may have been premature @Rubiksmoose. They may need to work on this before asking what level it should be.

@NautArch That may be the case, but the second question still did not belong. They are separate issues right?

It's currently reading like a COntagion variant with an immediate effect instead of the 3 round save system.
@Rubiksmoose they are, but i personally prefer to let the asker decide which they want to start with.
right now it's "I"ve got an incomplete homebrew, what level is it"

3:36 PM
@NautArch It was literally labeled "optional" I think that is a pretty good indication of whic part they cared about more.

@Rubiksmoose oh, sure. use logic.

@NautArch hahaha

I've edited my question, about curse of strahd do you guys think I'm still being too vague? Cheers

@Biomage It is tricky. I don't have a good replacement criteria for you unfortunately. "overpowered" is better I think I'm not sure that is enough. Different tables have greatly differing views on power levels

@Rubiksmoose I haven't played CoS, maybe @kviiri can give some insight.
but @Biomage I think it might be opinion-based because of the breadth of ways a DM can run.
As long as you're using official options, you should be fine.
The aarokocra is a concern, and it's why Adventurer's League doesn't allow flying races for PCs.
But it's also something you can handle

3:41 PM
Yes this is true, I may have a look ad the Adventurer's League rules and limit the players to that
I was thinking that maybe certain radiant damage dealers may be a little too much, but it should be fine!

@Biomage I do think you should maybe remove thematic concerns from the question or focus entirely on it. Because power level and theme seem to be two separate concerns that don't really realate to each other? Just my thinking atm

Okay will do

@Biomage But again, if they really want to play an aarokocra, they can. It's an official race.

@Biomage I don't think limiting to AL will actually help you that much
and I wouldn't reall recommend it.

@Biomage For instance, paladins with their nova radiant ability may seem overpowered, but it's balanced by their resources.
@Biomage Just limiting it to official published material should be safe.
Skip UA and homebrew.

3:43 PM
They aren't a bad ruleset perse, but AL defintiely is pretty restrictive in some ways that have been causing unhappiness in AL.

Okay, cheers for the advice guys

@Biomage No problem. fwiw I think Naut is correct.

I've edited to focus wholly on the theme as I think I can handle power differences fairly simply

@Biomage my gut is that is primarily opinion based.

Yeah you're probably right :/

3:45 PM
Ultimately, I don't think you have to worry as long as you stick with official.
It's an official module made to work with official resources.

@Biomage Yeah this is tricky too because different DMs have different tolernces for what themes they want to play with

Yeah, my main concern was that a lot of published material has emerged since the release of Strahd and I haven't kept up as I've usually only allowed PhB, MM and DMG

And hoenstly I really can't think of any race/class that would be a thematic clash, but again I think having someone who played the game would be much better equipped to answer that. That is just my gut.

@Biomage WoTC vetted that material (hopefully!), so I'd still trust that they wouldn't be putting out material that breaks previous material.

I was thinking a vampire could be problematic, but I don't know if you can play one from published material or not!

3:47 PM
@Biomage Luckily there isn't too much player-facing stuff you have to worry about. The only one you are missing is Xanathar's Guide to everything which added spells and subclasses and some racial options.
@Biomage technically you can, in that the DM can allow anything, but it is not a standard option. Vampires are a MM thing and not really meant for character creation.

@Biomage you can not. Do you have the books?

I have the DMG, PHB and MM, Curse of Strahd arrives in a few days!

@Biomage Are you okay with digital resources?

@Biomage Vampires as a playable race are in plane shift zendikar and plane shift Ixalan but those are for some completely different things (from magic the gathering) and probably not adequate for CoS

Not for my players but for me it's fine!

3:49 PM
@Biomage The other thing to consider is that many adventures have some preface to them that talks to the DM about these kinds of concerns. They will often makes suggestions if they have any races/classes/alignments that the DM should encourage or discourage among the palyers if the writers saw it as a concern

Woo!

all rules sourcebooks are there. No modules, though.

@Sdjz Also still in UA currently correct?

@Rubiksmoose I would guess so but can't seem to find them in UA

4:02 PM
still have 4 spots open onmy dndbeyond account :)

@KorvinStarmast Dunno if you've played LoL recently, but someone made a statblock for Ornn.

1 hour later…
5:22 PM
@Sdjz they aren't labelled as UA, you have to search them by Planeshift
@Biomage every official playable race so far is a humanoid, but we are getting centaur and minotaur (who are traditionally monstrosities) soon, so it may be possible

5:35 PM
@Rubiksmoose I had to say something

@NautArch Thank you for doing so. Their answers definitely need some improvement. They often come close to being good but then veer off and miss the mark

Feel bad for the consistent downvotes. They weren't giving them the direction they need to improve.
Was hoping they'd compare against other answers, but they haven't.

5:52 PM
@NautArch Agreed.

I don't think they understand/care

I think it's more a matter of not understanding, so far.

the answer on the Coma question?
"answer"

Yes
Thanks for the comments left thus far, they helped me organise my thoughts, and I didn't realise that individual was operating from a paradigm like this.

@doppelgreener Yeah they seem enthusiastic but also strangely immune to suggestions or corrections for the most part. I do agree that I think there is some sort of communication./understanding barrier likely at fault.

5:59 PM
what have I mist?

@Rubiksmoose I think they're still struggling to understand this isn't a forum.
It's not unusual for a newbie.
@goodguy5 Someone who's been kinda struggling with figuring out the system made a new not-an-answer.

oh, I think I saw that guy

I feel like SO kind of lowered my standards for what a quality Question + Answer should be on this network. I'm kind of used to getting answers like this for posts I make, so stuff like the non-answer for the Comatose question just don't even register for me.

SO is definitely speed over quality
But that's one of the many ways in which it should not set the standard the rest of the network works to :P

yea. I try to ignore SO. it's generally a dumpster fire unless you're looking in very specific substacks. Like Perl or Lisp or something

6:03 PM
AFAIK, Python's SO is pretty solid too - there's just two very distinct tracts of "people using python for Pandas" and "everyone else"

@doppelgreener Or, in the case of my SO questions, it's a case of just, nothing happening... ever... (I got another 1k view badge yesterday, 1 partial answer and no votes (up or down) on the Q).

God help you if you have a Java question

The solution is obviously to not have a new Java question. Only problems that are already solved.

well, that does help
I made a custom critter for the game I run.

Should I try to make a question about it, or just run it by here?

@goodguy5 Dependws on what you want helkp with I suppose

6:10 PM
just general thoughts, I suppose. If I were to make a question, it would be like "what CR is this" or "how many of these monsters can I throw at a level 4 party" or something like that

It should probably be here

cool.

fly it past us, and one of us might point out if some/all of it would make a good mainsite question

Is the jury still out on iterations on homebrew in questions or did we come up with a set of guidelines?

Jury is not still out, iterative design is how we handle it
14
A: How can I ask a good homebrew review question?

doppelgreener1. State what you want to achieve, and why you want a review. In order to give you feedback on whether your material is functioning well at its purpose, we need to know what that purpose is. Please also tell us if there's anything you're particularly worried about or looking to improve or fix. ...

6:15 PM
That's what I had thought - I'd missed that meta though. Thanks for linky!

So, I had this idea of a a creepy web-forest, a la LotR and Frodo, but yellow and slimy, for some reason. I don't know how my mind works.

But the party is doing some demon stuff and I wanted to incorporate that.

so, I came up with the Fel Slug.

Basically, does acid damage and is resistant to stuff. one sec I'll transcribe the statblock I have scribbled down

How else are they able to ask about adjusted, updated versions of content, after all? We don't let them edit the question in place.
@goodguy5 Gross. Marvelous.

@goodguy5 I'd go with the Fel Sloth, personally, but I am biased towards sloths

Fel [creature] where they all have the same stats except possibly their attacks have different damage/name (slug> Slam(Bludgeoning); Sloth> Claws(Slashing); Wolf> Bite(Piercing); etc.)

^actually a great idea

6:29 PM
Fel creatures should also have a laser ranged attack

--Fel Slug--
Str: 10
Dex: 12
Con: 19 (*)
Int: 6
Wis: 6
Cha: 11 (*)

**Resistances:** Bludgeoning, Fire, Piercing, Lightning, Force, Thunder, Necrotic
**Immunities:** Acid

--Attacks--
Bite+3 : 1d4+1d6 acid + plus Acidic Leech
Spit : 1d6+1 acid

--Special--
Noxious Cloud (5/6 recharge): creatures within five feet of the Fel Slug take 2d6 Acid damage, or half as much on a successful save. DC15 Con Save.
Acidic Leech: If the Fel Slug hits a target with a bit attack, it may attach. See Stirge, except 1d6+4 acid damage and doesn't automatically detach at 10hp.

@goodguy5 What creature type is it?

@MikeQ either ooze or fiend

Isn't a bit much 7 resistances and 1 immunity...?

Force resistant does seem a bit strong, but then again, warlocks get force damage for cheap

6:32 PM
I'm still toying with the resistances. The acid immunity is for sure though
lemme see if I can upload this picture from my phone.
why is it sideways....
whatever

@EnderLook Cold, Slashing, and I assume Salt are the way to kill it.

^

Salt?

slugs?

Salt kills slugs?

6:38 PM
Salt + Slugs = a cruel, but effective, way to kill slugs.

Salted weapons would bypass the resistance
It's like silvered weapons
but with salt

*brined

Ahh. I've just checked what means slug

ooooh. English is not your native tongue.. that makes sense.

@goodguy5 In school we don't learn much about... slugs.

6:39 PM
@MikeQ So to kill a slug, you could use a salt rifle.

top tier joke

@kviiri Not to be confused with metal slugs

I still feel calling them "shotgun slugs" or such feels a bit weird

Quick and Side not Related Question: How much power would be a D&D5e PC with Necrotic, Cold and Poison resistance but Radiant and Fire vulnerability?

You could just call them Nickle Slugs.

6:41 PM
If someone fires shotgun slugs at you, then you can fire back with a salt rifle to defeat the slugs
@EnderLook You need to consider how common the different damage types are. Fire is usually more common than other damage types, so fire vulnerability is pretty bad

@EnderLook I highly suggest that you do not give PCs vulnerability

@MikeQ And what about Radiant?
@MikeQ mmm, does exist +50% damage to something? (Like "half-vulnerability")

@EnderLook Boring answer'd be that that depends on what foes they're facing, and this is one of those things were the average being correct doesn't mean it's balanced

@EnderLook That's how vulnerability worked in 3.5/PF

@MikeQ But this is D&D 5 :(

6:43 PM
What's your goal here with these resistances and vulnerabilities?

Radiant is much less likely to be a problem. Unless the PC is fighting "good" guys, then not a lot of enemies sling radiant damage around.

@MikeQ PF?

Pathfinder (sorry Mike)

You are forgiven
...for now

@MikeQ Ah, we are boring so my brother and me are making a Vampire Race & Class homebrew just for fun. It's quite (really) powerful so while my brother keeps making it even more stronger I am in charge or giving him weakness

6:45 PM
Yeah, Radiant is usually associated with the Good (and Necrotic with the Evil) and most adventurer parties aren't fighting much of the Good guys.

Hm... The strength/weakness tradeoff for PCs isn't really within 5e's design scope
Previous editions did that (e.g. certain races would get +2 to some stats and -2 to others)
But instead 5e likes to do opportunity costs, so it's either you have the bonus, or you don't. No penalties to "balance" the bonuses.

Yeah, it doesn't work very well. First you have too easy time because you are highly resistant, and then one bad fireball gets you and you die.

and not to mention, that theoretically, the character would have a pathological fear of fire

@MikeQ So... is it bad counter too much strengths with weakness? Should it only have strengths (but weaker)?

@EnderLook That would be a good way to start. Also I think the monster manuals already have an entry for vampires. Maybe look at that for ideas.

6:48 PM
@MikeQ Oh, that is a pity

@EnderLook It's a complex issue. By my experience, generally if you feel like you have so many strengths you need to balance them out with weaknesses, the problem is that you have too many strengths.
4

^^^ bingo

@MikeQ Yes, but 20 HP per turn is OP. I managed to convince my brother to has 3 HP per turn if you have less than half of your max HP. Also, legendary resistance is OP, we added one at level 20

Hmm ok, so some sort of "lesser vampire" race that players could access?

(where "weakness" means specifically weaknesses unusual for other characters of the same degree)
@EnderLook For what kind of game is this? Is your brother a player in a larger party or are you playing one on one?
It makes quite a lot of difference on how some balance concerns should be applied :)

6:51 PM
@MikeQ Yes, that was my main idea. But my brother doesn't convince with "lesser" stuff. Everything or nothing.

Considering how different cultures have their own interpretations of vampires and vampirism, maybe you could have a race and separate sub-races? Like how elves, dwarves, and gnomes all have sub-race options?

@EnderLook If he's playing the sole PC of the game (as opposed to being in a larger party), balance changes a lot and things that work out poorly in a group become more feasible.

@EnderLook what about a fledgling? That's like a developing vampire and you could develop further with racial feats?

@kviiri If we archive to finish this homebrew before killing us, the idea would be use it when I become a DM... after a long time, and with a party. I mean, a long time, I've played less than 15 hours D&D but I am already making plans (and a campaign) for a distant future

or uh.....
remnants?
is that what they're called?

6:55 PM
@goodguy5 revenants?

yea!

@goodguy5 Remnants?

Revenants

As for giving a bunch of resistances and strengths to a race - Usually that is reserved for classes or monsters. e.g. Necromancer wizards need a few levels before getting necrotic resistance
Replicants?
Rembrandts?

@EnderLook Yea, I just want to illustrate the difference... suppose a party with just one PC, a vampire, encounters a group of fire-wielding enemies. Then it's their weakness and they know to run away. That works reasonably well --- the vulnerability doesn't ruin the game, it creates legit scary foes because it's ok to run away. But it doesn't work well as soon as there's a group of adventurers involved.

6:56 PM
@DavidCoffron revenants? I will have to research about that

A group of adventurers with a single vampire might decide they can fight. They might have a good chance of winning. And then the vampire dies when they get hit by a single unlucky fireball.

@kviiri Because he would want to flee but the group not?
Ahh, I'll have to had that in mind

Alternatively, the group decides to skedaddle because the vampire could die, which might disappoint the players who would've wanted to fight the fight. Or finally, the vampire can stick to the sidelines, which can get very boring and frustrating to the player of the vampire.
@EnderLook Yea!
And vulnerabilities are kinda serious business --- lots of spells deal large amounts of damage at once and are quite capable of "accidentally" killing a PC with an unlucky roll even without vulnerabilities :)

I don't think vampires have any vulnerabilities in 5e
It's a "If the vampire takes radiant damage or damage from holy water, this trait doesn't function at the start of the vampire's next turn." which seems fine

@DavidCoffron Not as in the game term, but they do have the traditional weaknesses that are "vulnerabilities" outside the game parlance :)
