I wonder if the "Number of people reached" overflows on anyones profile
Hey, who/how can people vote to reopen a question?

@TolMera it's a rep based priviledge
I can VTRO.. what question?

Guessing it's a bit higher than my 1775
@DarkCygnus This one
Blah that did not work, the question just above in chat
That's what made me wonder the how to VTRO anyway, not that I'm speciffically interested in that quesiton.

@TolMera done

Cool, taa :)
Looking forward to that privilege myself lol. (only 999*** rep to go hah)

@TolMera not that many.. it's at 3k

9:25 AM
Yea so 3K, sweet, not unachievable

9:57 AM
I was working on an answer to this:

Q: How to become more receptive to ideas as member of a mob programming team without going against my values

Jamie TwellsAt the company I work for we have just started mob programming, where the team of three that I am a part of all write the code for our project together at one keyboard, and we only proceed if we all agree on the path forward. It has been commented that we always take my path, and not a path put ...

the realised that no matter how I tried to write it the answer always ended up being me soapboxing about how much mob-programming sucks

lol
That's a bee hive you're kicking on

@TolMera precisely.. which is why I think I'll abandon trying to answer

Fair enough, it's a nice question thought, probably headed in the direction of HNQ
I've never had the chance to do pair programming, so the idea is appealing, but I can see sooo many IPS issues with it.

@TolMera where it will become a battleground in the unholy war of mob programming acolytes vs lone wolves
@TolMera despite what the OP of that question (and so many people) think pair programming != mob programming
the dynamics are very different
pair programming is great, it needs to be applied judiciously but when appropriate it's fantastic

Ahh.. Let me ask the question that I know is going to trigger an avalanch "how?"

10:03 AM
mob programming sucks
@TolMera in pair programming you either have a "lead" who is the more senior one and has the deciding vote or you have a pair that is comfortable working together and reach consensus more often then not

Ok fair enough, and mob?

doing that when n > 2 is much much harder, utilization of the team dwindles as you add more people as well
there's a reason the phrase "designed by committee" is a byword for something being crap
as well
mob makes sense only as a last resort for a particularly obstinate story when all other avenues have failed - and only then when time is too pressing to properly cycle through a spike
when you try and mob with 4-5 (or more - shudder) devs it's like locking 5 cats in a closet with a screwdriver and expecting to come back in a few hours to find a set of shelves

10:22 AM
morning

10:33 AM
Morning @Summer.
@motosubatsu that's an great analogy, it kind of sounds like mob programming would be better as a development meeting, then a couple of coders go off and implement in pairs. Otherwise yea personality has way too much sway and clash

@TolMera yep.. unfortunately it can be seen as "trendy" by idiots who lap up articles that make frequent use of words like "collaboration" and "synergy" and show pics of groups of impossibly good-looking programmers clustered around a keyboard smiling
it'll go away eventually but it will likely spend the next few years as a thorn in the side of the development industry

Heh, if only I could stoop so low as to write a blog like that myself. "How to make your IT team 'work' for you" <vom />
Lots of money in selling shi*

@TolMera I'm sure there are consultants who have made a pretty penny or two by going in to companies and running "workshops" to transition companies to tripe like this

@motosubatsu dilbert.com/strip/1998-08-24 <<< yep

@TolMera indeed
it's great to look back on Dilbert strips from ~20 years ago to see that no matter how much things change in the workplace they still manage to stay the same

10:47 AM
:)

11:41 AM
@motosubatsu The problem with mob programming is that you either have rigid standards and practices, which limits the efficacy, creativity and timliness, ,or you have a disjointed mess that is nearly impossible to maintain without a team of psychologists.

@RichardU are you talking about the code or the programmers? heh.

Q: enderland's two week notice

enderlandWell, this is probably the most difficult post to write I've ever written on this site. I have been part of this community more than six years at this point (including 4+ as a moderator) but circumstances in my life mean that it is time for me to take a step back and resign from being a moderator...

12:30 PM
workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/121770/… idk who voted 'too broad' here but I disagree. Afaik this is a problem that happens to a lot of people.

12:42 PM
@Summer agreed.. it's the special TWP meaning of "Too Broad" aka "I don't want to answer it"

1:00 PM
@Summer I wonder if it's better or worse for the recruitment industry to have high or low un-employment.
Within the country I mean

Hey Hey

@TolMera I started out as a maintenance coder. I'd say both: One to help you figure out the code, and one for yourself after dealing with it.

Hah, alright :)
It's a real mind bender trying to follow obscure logic without knowing the goal.

@TolMera meaningless variable names induce psychopathy in maintenance coders.
as does implicit variable declaration

You mean famework defined variables when you say "implicit"? Or do you mean, $thisVariableForThatThingWeAreDoing.

1:06 PM
TWP's down to 5 mods then
Maybe they'll hold another election or call up someone from the last one

@Magisch I think you posted that in the wrong chat.

@RichardU hm?
just random musings about the state of the site
should be fitting for the site's chat room, no?

@TolMera some languages allow for implicit variable declaration like this.

MyVariable = "Something"

As opposed to

Dim MyVariable as string

MyVariable = "Something"
@Magisch yeah, but it came out of the blue like you were in the middle of a conversation with someone.

nah

Oh, see I really started coding with PHP @RichardU, so that's the standard for me. I can cope with both methods, but I can understand it not being highly maintainable.

1:11 PM
@Magisch sorry, just wanted to let you know in case you had more than one window open and wellll.... ah, nevermind.

I do have a couple

@TolMera yeah, I started with COBOL and then C
implicit variable declaration makes for nightmares when you're trying to maintain it.
Actually, I taught myself BASIC when I was 10... but the first classes were for COBOL and C

@RichardU COBOL? How did you survive? though honestly COBOL programmers are in demand at banks? apparently a random number of key systems are still running on antiquated versions of COBOL and MainFrame

@TolMera this is the problem with PHP.. it's easy to learn for beginners but absolutely shouldn't be used by beginners because of all the bad habits it teaches

@TolMera That's because COBOL never breaks and mainframes typically go 20-30 YEARS without a failure

1:13 PM
:) BASIC was my first too.
Recoded a parallel port interface to turn lights on and off in a mouse cage. with lots and lots of help from my dad.

hah

That dino was a maintenance coder @TolMera

Mahaha

If you modularize your code and structure it well, you should never have a goto unless it's error handling to allow for a graceful exit.
or, if you say, were bored in a college class and sent an infinite loop to the print server.

1:26 PM
@RichardU 10 PRINT "BOOBS"
20 GOTO 10

Well then, we know what Moto likes to do in his spare time

everyonce in a while people just need to unleash their inner 3rd grader

Oldschool runescape has just been released on Mobile hahahah work is very productive at this point in time

@Twyxz surprised you're not at home using your flexi to play with horse testicles

It's a 100gb download
which I haven't started
yet

1:38 PM
@motosubatsu actually it was....

10 CLS
20 Lprint "VIRUS ALERT",
30 goto 20
@IDrinkandIKnowThings Part of the hacker's code is "Anything I can hack is a reflection of the poor planning of others"

@Twyxz well it ain't gonna download itself, that's the problem with the yoof of today, no work ethic! :D

the yoof of today make use of new technology, I've started the download now
From my phone, that's called magic old man

@Twyxz actually we call that "technology".. honestly the yoof of today, don't understand the difference!

you're distracting me from fishing

1:42 PM
@Twyxz yes, I'm busy phishing myself, er, oh, you said FISHING... nevermind.

@Twyxz honestly.. yoof of today.. can't multitask

the controls on this thing are surprisingly smooth

Multishirking is an artform.

Who's multitask?

@Twyxz said the actress to the bishop....

1:47 PM
Sucks to be you but I think it's home time personally

@Twyxz is school done for the day?
I thought it ran til at least 3 :D

tuesday early finish
I'm so tired, my legs are heavier than usual

@Twyxz does that mean they skip naptime?

definitely not. Don't be silly

@Twyxz good, naptime is important. A tired toddler is a cranky toddler!

1:52 PM
I'm still tired.
@enderland Hello!

howdy @Twyxz

I'm 90% sure I saw that you left but could be wrong

Q: enderland's two week notice

enderlandWell, this is probably the most difficult post to write I've ever written on this site. I have been part of this community more than six years at this point (including 4+ as a moderator) but circumstances in my life mean that it is time for me to take a step back and resign from being a moderator...

@Twyxz nobody ever really "leaves" TWP.. they just stop coming here

Good luck with raising the kid :)

1:56 PM
It's like rats leaving a sinking ship... :D
But enderland was an awesome mod. There's big boots to fill there.

@Snow sensible creatures rats!

for the record I wanted that to have a capitalized title but "enderland's Two Week Notice" looked weird. And now it's bothering me that I see it all lowercase in this chat >.>

@enderland I just assumed you were doing it to be "cool"
seriously though it's a shame to see you go

@enderland You won't be bothered for more than two weeks...
At least it's not "six to eight" weeks...

lol I should have titled it that :v

2:01 PM
@enderland should we look forward to your new and illustrious career on Parenting.SE?

heh. probably not

I just took a look at meta for the first time in forever and it's depressing tbh. You must have had a difficult task as a moderator.

@Summer It's been quite the half decade, that's for sure
well I guess not quite half a decade of moderatoring. But meta has been pretty interesting since day 1 here...

@enderland mod years are like dog years - each calendar one counts for about 7
2

If that doesn't deserve a star I don't know what does hehe.

2:10 PM
@enderland you're the reason I didn't quit SE within a week of joining.
@enderland enjoy the toughest job you'll ever love

@enderland I hope you'll enjoy your newfound fatherhood^^

2:31 PM
Chat is popular today or what.

Hi all

Hello @paw

workplace.stackexchange.com/q/121778/62397 I'm going to pre-emptively ask for help on my question
The downvoting and closing has already begun
Is it really inappropriate? I feel like it's a legit question

@SouthpawHare I was actually going to ask for the same.
I think right now, the question is too broad. I know former programmers that are everything from CIOs to pastry chefs.

It's probably something people consider "primarily opinion based"

2:35 PM
@RichardU But I was specific in asking for places that use my skills and background. A pastry chef clearly does not, even if it's possible...

@TolMera If they're closing for that reason, it's a nonsense reason. I've seen many make the transition, and for just the reason @SouthpawHare is saying.

@SouthpawHare - just because you're here, I would recommend looking at becoming a trainer or consultant. Both of which allow you to use your skills and experience.

I know I could become anything I want, but I have narrowed it from that already

@SouthpawHare the pastry chef is using his skills to set up the logistics of his business.

@RichardU Oh I don't think it's a bad question :) just my initial thought was if they ar VTC it's going to be that.

2:36 PM
@SouthpawHare the first question is do you want to stay in IT?

@SouthpawHare I was actually going to suggest coming in here as you might stand a better chance of getting an answer!

@SouthpawHare chat is a great place to come. You might get your answer here, even if your Q gets closed, but we'll help you with the Q too.

I don't know, and I don't think that's the first question. I think that's more like the last question. I think it makes sense to consider all my options first.
It kind of feels like the whole world as I know it has been flipped upsidedown. I need to realize that I know nothing, and start from scratch in thinking about this.

@RichardU One of the easy ones would be taking a cert course and becoming a DPO consultant

@SouthpawHare I'm an old coder who started as a kid about 40 years ago and I have seen literally every option exercised.

2:38 PM
you earn about as much as software dev, and your software dev background will help a ton, but it's very different work

@SouthpawHare if you haven't already, pick up "What color is my parachute", the book is PRECISELY about getting the answers you seek.

@Magisch Oh, tell me more

@SouthpawHare May be less prevalent in the US; but everywhere in europe companies now need data protection officers to deal with gdpr related headache

@Magisch please post what DPO stands for, remember, we're dealing with someone looking to change and may not know all the terminology

it really helps to have a software background to fill that role
I know that for instance over here there are tons of DPO jobs with "Must have any cert or 1 year experience, IT experience is a plus"

2:41 PM
@SouthpawHare I know a fellow who, after the bloodbath of the early 00's went to work as a security guard. Then his company went into IT security as well, guess who heads it?
Get the book, read it, it will really help you.

That's where my career has been involuntarily progressing lately

@RichardU Sure then, I already enjoy books like that anyway. I'll Amazon it tonight. =)

@SouthpawHare also, you can get wisdom from what your parents did, as it does shape your destiny.

Case in point: My mother was a teacher, My father was a machinist. As a programmer, I teach machines.

I do envy my Dad. He worked a fairly routine job using inventory management software for a stock room at a factory. It seemed very non-stressful, and he was there for like 40 years or something.

Old time work conditions

2:44 PM
I too appreciate stability and avoiding stress

where it was still somewhat fair

@SouthpawHare logistics management is ideal for a programmer.

oh look.. a new user comes in, people are dicks to them and they delete their post

@Magisch life has never been more fair than it is now.

2:45 PM
@motosubatsu yep

my aunt's husband can't understand why I don't want to work for his multinational conglomerate. He's been there for 25 years, has 50 days PTO a year and makes well north of 125.000€ a year

@RichardU I particularly enjoyed the 120 rep user who wrote "Voting to close" as if that actually meant something

thing is now starting you start with non-increasing 22 days PTO (legal minimum), less then a third of the salary and no flex hours with additional overtime "as required"

The money in this career certainly is good. I already make more than my dad ever made even right before he retired at the end of his career
But I don't value having a ton of money, except insofar as I have a lot of school loans to pay off

My dad is one of those people who for some reason is incredible at anything he picks up. He started working with his hands at a young age (14) and now can build you practically anything or fix anything. I wonder if he would have excelled at programming if he picked that up, he's a very good strategical and logical thinker.

2:46 PM
@motosubatsu yeah, the mods should do something about that guy.

as is typical in these cases I actually had an answer I was typing that was not only helpful to the OP but useful in other similar scenarios
only I never got a chance to help the OP because of the dogpiling arseholes
2
@RichardU has he got form?

my dad is an accountant (no further qualifications) who through a very very fortunate series of events made it to head of quarterly accounting at a multinational credit insurance firm

@motosubatsu yeah, the second comment was beyond rude, it was condescending and smug.

Well good for him Magisch :)

I voted to undelete. That guy needs a chance.

2:48 PM
My dad is legally not working right now as he has a heart disease but he's been basically fixing our house.

This has seemed like the harshest Stack Exchange site in terms of voting. This chat seems nice, though. =)

Tis' true with twp
ips is similar
new users are expected to know rules established users have a difficult time parsing fully

@Magisch that's not fortunate, that's hard work

Voters here are ruthless. It bothers me.

for instance I'm like #20 on the rep league on IPS and I can't confidently tell you if a Q I write is off topic or not

2:49 PM
@SouthpawHare the chat has regulars, the main site has... well, you've seen it.

@RichardU I've done the same

@RichardU he would resent that remark

I think it should be visible who voted what.

according to his self reflection, he's never worked hard or even exceptionally well in his life, just a series of "I know this guy who knows a guy who..."

@Magisch funny how the most hard working and industrious people have all the luck, isn't it?

2:50 PM
I have only negatively voted questions on this site, but I can't imagine I'm actually that bad at asking questions, considering I do fine or better on all the other SE sites

@Magisch well you don't really have to know if it is, other people will have an opinion on it either way.

@Summer what would you gain by having that information?

@RichardU mr 123 rep is of that special breed of users who never writes answers or questions but instead dispenses their "wisdom" through comments almost exclusively

As a rule, I don't down-vote unless something is fairly egregious, and then only if I cannot edit it.

Although amusingly, since up-votes are worth so much more than down-votes, every one of my negative-total questions has still been of a small profit of points

2:52 PM
@motosubatsu IMO, if a user hasn't asked or answered a question in six months, their ability to comment should be suspended.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings well for starters to discuss it in chat, it would be good to see someones perspective and talk about it. Especially if you have different opinions. Plus I'm curious to see who the ruthless downvoters are, it seems to be the same few people every time. Would love to have a chat and see where they're coming from. I feel like there should be some sort of harmony in the voters yet I feel like atm it's very divided. Either a hard no or a hard yes, nothing in between.

@RichardU agreed.. it also plays into what we discussed the other day regarding assoc bonus and related / non-related sites

@SouthpawHare yeah, it does limit the power of jerks.

@RichardU I like that yes.

<= Very Ruthless downvoter
3

2:53 PM
@Summer that has been suggested and summarily declined a couple dozen times across site metas, mso and mse

@IDrinkandIKnowThings yes, but you also participate, so you don't count among the jerks.

rationale being that it would enable retaliation and calling out of the voters, who are free to vote as they please
as long as you don't serially target another user, you can vote for literally any reason

I never vote by user

I could downvote your post because I wasn't in the mood to look at gravatars that day

@Magisch so, of course, this does not prevent people from speaking offline and targeting people.

2:54 PM
@RichardU That would be pretty limiting, I have little to contribute after someone like @motosubatsu get's a chance to answer, and I'm not in need of any help. Forcing people to ask/answer in order to comment would have unseemly consequences.

All of this conversation I still have one user in mind
MAybe I hold a personal grudge
Well not personal... just a grudge

I see that, but it could always be visible just to people above a certain rep. I was going to say xp, too much pokemon go for me.

@TolMera surely you contribute at least SOMETHING every six months.

@RichardU Mmm... no there's been periods where I have not, probably most of last year.

From a personal perspective I don't mean it to gang up on the ruthless voters or 'jerks', I'd rather understand them or have them understand my view. I think the place would be better if there's more harmony in the 'opinions' of the voters.
But then again there's a very good reason I'm not a mod ;)

2:55 PM
@Twyxz after you get to a certain rep, you begin to encourage a hate-dom. I always get at least two down votes on everything, even my posts that are overwhelmingly up-voted.

@RichardU yeah sorry.. I just can't help myself
(kidding)

Is this a name and shame culture here

@motosubatsu LOL

@Summer My view is that TWP could easily end up like IPS. I downvote ruthlessly(even my friends here) to help stave that off

@TolMera don't do yourself a disservice - you write some good answers

2:57 PM
@RichardU Yea, Jan 2017 to Sep 2018 I answered nothing, and I've only asked 3 questions, last one in August 2017

@Twyxz oh, I know who's downvoting me, but I don't care, at this point, it's like trying to put out a forest fire with a garden hose. they have no effect.

@motosubatsu Thank you sir :) I do try.

@TolMera then get on with it. We need your wisdom.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings but downvoting doesn't help anyone imo. If I don't know why you're downvoting, I can't grow/learn from your downvote. I can never get better at asking or answering a question from nothing more than a downvote.
VTC at least has a reason

@Summer get a rep over `10K and you can downvote all day.

2:58 PM
@Summer Downvoting is how i signify that the question or answer is poor.

@Twyxz I don't need to name anyone, and the shame is their own.

I choose not to do that in comments intentionaly

So isn't there some kind of threshold where you get suspended or something if you have too many downvotes? Should I be worrying about that at this point?

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I try to edit when I can.

@RichardU as do i

2:59 PM
@SouthpawHare The only thing that can get you in trouble are false flags.
OR serial down-voting someone.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings but poor because of what? Spelling? How it's asked? Do you not understand it? If you make me a drawing and I tell you 'Nope, it's a shitty drawing.' how will you improve the drawing?

workplace.stackexchange.com/q/121778/62397 Also, please help me improve this question. I have no idea what's wrong with it, but it means a lot to me right now and I really want to make it work
Any editing advice is appreciated

@SouthpawHare there have been a few times when a user has gone after another user by going into their profile, jumping to all of their Qs and As, and down-voted them.

That triggers an alert, and the down-votes are reversed, and the offender suspended.

Great timing Southpaw hehe. That exactly is an example of what I'm talking about. 2 downvotes, no idea how to change it because nobody helped.

@Summer I think it has 3 downvotes, and 1 upvote, technically

3:01 PM
@SouthpawHare, I'm looking at it. It seems a bit verbose and unfocussed. Is there any way you can narrow it a bit?

@RichardU Maybe. I actually thought I kept it really short, compared to how rambly I felt like being...
Is there anything you think can be omitted?

@SouthpawHare I'll take a crack at trimming it a bit.

I just don't see how instead of downvoting straight away, people can't just give a quick comment about what to change. I always try to do that first, give it some time, then downvote if there is no response.

@RichardU conditionally
doesn't if you do it cleverly
same with serial upvoting

@Magisch have you been naughty?

3:04 PM
@RichardU no, but I may or may not have flagged nearly 1500 cases of unreversed "slipped past the system" type of serial voting

@SouthpawHare will take a look now :)
@SouthpawHare the problem is that there isn't really anything truly wrong with it!
but I'll see if I can tweak it enough to get the CV police off your back

@motosubatsu Heheh, thank you

@SouthpawHare I trimmed it down, maybe motosubatsu can make it fit better.

... I use my time on the network questionably

@RichardU This is good, though I'm wary of saying that every job literally ended "due to stress". I feel like that's maybe leaving out a little too much nuance.
In some cases, I left because I became unhappy. In other cases, I was fired or pressured to leave because I was going to try to stick it out but wasn't fast or good enough.
The latter is only indirectly "because" of stress. It was still stressful, though, and something I want to avoid.

3:10 PM
@SouthpawHare it's all stress related. Being unhappy is a sign of stress

Right, but sometimes it's stress is the effect, and not the cause

@SouthpawHare at least you're back up to zero now, and not in negative territory, so your post won't get deleted

@RichardU Fantastic! A first!

@SouthpawHare just tweak it a bit to reflect what you want to say, it's your question after all.

@RichardU Okay. Thanks a lot!

3:12 PM
@SouthpawHare always feel free to come in here for help if you need it, we have good people here.
can we get one more undelete vote for this one?

@SouthpawHare I've made an edit - hopefully I've not taken it too far from your intended question

@motosubatsu I appreciate it, but I think I prefer the previous formatting better
Yeah, I think I'd rather keep most of the previous edit from Richard

No worries - I tried to phrase things a bit more generically - i.e. asking for a strategy for asking how to find a suitable position rather than asking for specific recommendations as for some reason the notion of giving career advice causes strokes amongst the "objective is as objective does" brigade
@SouthpawHare not a problem at all - the last thing I'd want to do is take it away from being "your" question :)

I see. I'll try to merge that part in

@SouthpawHare we are here to help

3:17 PM
I've rolled it back to the previous edit so you can start from something more to your liking if you want to make any further changes :)
@RichardU yep.. despite the efforts of some people helping people is what I signed up for - and I plan on doing it as long as I can before they make it completely impossible :)

You know, I find it interesting that I commonly find people who are surprised that I am surprised that the software field is so difficult and challenging. I've been legitimately shocked by how much of a strain it is, but it seems like that's common knowledge to most people.
To be frank, I got into it because as a kid, I found programming so easy
My brain seems made for programming logic. It seemed like what I was made to do.
But there's so many other problems in careers

@RichardU the user deleted that question its not a great practice to over rule that

@SouthpawHare my advice would be to breakdown what aspects of programming you feel suit you into the real core components - way below the level of specific technologies. e.g. it could be "I like problem solving"

Hmm...

3:35 PM
I'd also suggest having a think about the other skills you've picked up along the way - in 8 years you've probably acquired a whole host of ancillary skills and domain knowledge that you could use to leverage a transition into a different role in an industry you're already familiar with

I guess as a first thought... I enjoy being organized and technically-minded in everything I do, I am super-OCD about everything, and I love being useful and having other people have a good opinion about me, which my self-esteem is significantly based around.

for example I've worked in IT for two companies in the Utilities sector - and I could easily move into several different positions in that sector (at least in terms of capabilities)

@SouthpawHare Try becoming a BA

But with things to avoid, I have a lot of social anxiety, and often freeze up when I'm talking to people I'm intimidated by

@SouthpawHare BA or tester sounds good

3:38 PM
yeah with social anxiety id probably lean toward tester

@IDrinkandIKnowThings tester would allow for more direct usage of development skills as well

But the social anxiety only happens with certain people. Some of my friends barely see that part of me at all.

BA with social anxiety would be do-able - although it would depend upon the environment
as a developer you'd have the advantage of being able to formulate requirements in a way that made sense in terms of a possible implementation
and know the sorts of things that you would have looked for in a good set of requirements

Are Business Analysts still a thing? I feel like I've never seen a real one, and maybe it's been getting phased into other things in the modern era?
I dunno for sure

another option would be SCRUM master - you'd be useful, have respect from developers for knowing the "game" so to speak
@SouthpawHare yep definitely still a thing
I've worked with them in my last three contracts

3:42 PM
@motosubatsu I'd love to be a SCRUM Master or an Agile Coach or something like that! However, they seem pretty rare, and definitely also require at least some additional certification, if not education, it seems.

@SouthpawHare it's a two day course, everything else you'd need to know you'll know already from 8 years as a dev

At one place where I worked, they were super big on Agile, and had a staff of several Agile Coaches. I started training with them on the side while I was failing at being a developer, and it was noted that I seemed pretty good at it.

@SouthpawHare sounds like we could be on to a winner!
I've worked in a couple of places that had dedicated SCRUM masters
and I've encountered plenty of other companies that do it
also a dev background makes for the best SCRUM masters - the one's who don't tend to be chocolate teapots

When I'm not being socially anxious, I seem to have great people skills. Friendly, open, and a good leader (when I feel confident about what I'm leading on).
It's just that it all comes crumbling down sometimes...

@SouthpawHare I know the feeling..except in my case you can substitute "most" for "some"
(spot the autistic person!)

3:46 PM
heheh
I'm one of those people who was never diagnosed with anything, but I've always clearly had pretty much all of the classic aspie-like tendencies

@SouthpawHare Did you try to get a diagnosis or do you think that you're not likely to be aspie / don't want to figure it out?

Never tried, but think it's likely, but don't really want to know for sure. I find that it doesn't really matter, since I don't want to use it as a crutch.
I am what I am.

@SouthpawHare good on you :)

@SouthpawHare I get what you mean :) I was curious because I recently realized it myself, and I don't know yet whether I wanna go for a diagnosis. But I feel the same way about the fact that it's no excuse for anything. I just felt better having a potential explanation about why I am how I am

Though I do admit, from time to time, like these days, I feel like my weirdo brain is a somewhat significant part of my struggles...

3:52 PM
@SouthpawHare I'm aspie, I don't use it as a crutch, I use it as a WEAPON :D

@RichardU Oh?

@SouthpawHare yes, I'm the poster boy for weaponized autism :D
The syndrome has almost as many advantages as disadvantages
Razor sharp focus, dedication, an inability to get bored.
quick study and able to be excellent in anything I attempt.

@avazula my aim getting a diagnosis was the fact there were some useful resources I could get access to if I had an official diagnosis, unfortunately the a##hole doctor I saw agreed completely that I was autistic but flat out refused to refer me to the next stage (for the "official" diagnosis) as she declared she didn't see anyway it could help
so I'm in the weird limbo of being diagnosed but not legally classed as autistic

@motosubatsu Good lorde ... that sounds awful. I'm sorry for you. (It ain't easy getting an official diagnosis in my country as well ...)

@TolMera great title

3:55 PM
@RichardU I find that I have those same superpowers in most of my life, with learning and excelling at a wide variety of hobbies and skills. But unfortunately, only very rarely at work...

@avazula yeah I'm not ashamed to admit that I ended up leaving the doctor's surgery in tears, it was a Grade-A humiliating experience

@enderland Good to hear the fam is growing :) I wish you the best

Work, on the other hand, leaves me distracted, bored, and lost in negative thoughts

Good morning everybody

@RichardU I wanna ask, how do you get self-confidence when being an aspie? I'm officially recognized as an HQI (I'm over 140), yet I feel terrible at pretty much everything I do ... This came to the point where I don't even dare focusing on a restrained topic of interest because I'm too afraid of sucking at it.

3:56 PM
Which I suppose just means I'm actually super focused, just on other things

@motosubatsu Healthcare workers can be very cruel sometimes

@avazula part of it is the old quote about not judging a fish by it's ability to climb a tree.

@RichardU Yeah, I know that one. I just don't know which animal I'm supposed to be then ...

@avazula yeah healthcare in my country is generally great - but for the most part they suck something awful at mental health

This is pretty much my biggest issue, figuring out what I'm good at

3:57 PM
particularly at the GP level

Also, the raging under-confidence inspires me to try harder, so I almost always exceed expetations.

@motosubatsu Ugh, tell me about it. In mine, depression is treated like a seasonal cold...

Ooo, my question is in the positive numbers! =D

@motosubatsu the USA closed all of their assylums back in the 60s when the Federal government took over. That's why we have so many homeless and spree killers. We don't treat them.

@avazula same here.. we have some excellent resources for depression and other mental health conditions but you can only get to them if your GP refers you
which they generally don't

3:59 PM
@SouthpawHare great! :)
@motosubatsu ugh, that's the worst ...
