AWS just introduced T3 series instances

@iBug darnit, AWS newsletter seems to have taken it's time :P

@angussidney ;P
My first impression is the updated Intel Skylake CPU and dual-core-everywhere.

It's interesting how long it takes for datacenters to be updated to newer processor versions
For instance, my PC is almost 2 years old now and it's running a Skylake chip

10:26 AM
For another instance, my laptop is more than 4 years old now and it's running a Haswell chip.

Then again, it makes sense, given all the investment/logistics required

My laptop is a refurbished 2008 Dell laptop, I believe

@Shree um, are you sure about that FP?
tp- feedback is TP, just no blacklist

@Mithrandir I expect it runs on some Core 2 Duo chip?

10:28 AM
@iBug I have no idea.

oh, looks like Shree had an accident

All the stickers have fallen off and I'm not sure how to check :D

There should be some sort of system information window

msinfo32?

Windows7/8/10 or Linux?

10:30 AM
Ubuntu, 16.04

Mith: It doesn't even boot so I can't check
@Mithrandir Try cat /proc/cpuinfo

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2370M CPU @ 2.40GHz

????????????????????

that looks too fast for its time

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10:32 AM
Wow, Sandy Bridge!

> 2.40GHz

Apparently there are 3 of them?

@EriktheOutgolfer Then why's it so slow? :/
@iBug Might've been replaced when it was refurbished?

10:34 AM
@Mithrandir You probably need an SSD

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in answer, blacklisted user: Generally, why Bicycle tires are thinner and Motorcycle tires thick? by Tamina on bicycles.SE

@Mithrandir Refurbishing laptops usually does not include replacing chips with newer generations, because there's far more than a simple replacement.

@Mithrandir well, I can't dig inside a system I don't know while obviously invading privacy, but I think the reason is that you have installed Ubuntu 16.04 on a PC from 2008

SSDs make everything faster - usually the computer isn't running at it's full capacity because it's waiting on getting data from the hard drive
@EriktheOutgolfer at least that's better than windows :)

10:35 AM
@angussidney FULLY AGREE and that's why I got 1TB of them in my laptop :) lol

@angussidney yeah
mmm 64-bit OS on 32-bit PC

@EriktheOutgolfer 32-bit PC? That's more than ancient

@EriktheOutgolfer ...that surely couldn't be possible

well, what do you call a PC with an i3 processor? a 64-bit PC?

10:36 AM
tpu- by iBug

@EriktheOutgolfer An i3 PC :)

@EriktheOutgolfer i3s aren't necessarily ancient

but then I consider the year: 2008
like, how has that survived

It's like calling an iPhone 8 ancient compared to a iPhone 8 plus, simply because it's a lower model

Strictly speaking, CPUs with the amd64 instructions are 64-bit CPUs.
Lemme mak'it clear: 2nd Core-i3 are 2011 stuff, not 2008

10:38 AM
but how much can you put into a motherboard from 2008

Also, I'm pretty sure that that CPU supports 64-bit, since my old laptop has a 2nd gen intel processor and it supported it

So I believe the laptop was not 2008, but 2011

there's definitely one Acer computer from 2008 running Ubuntu around here that's still in use. i thought this one was 2008 as well (but Dell), but I'll have to dig a little more

The last 32-bit CPUs are, I believe, early Pentium 4's.
All CPUs after that, to be around 2005, supports the instruction set named EM64T, and are practically 64-bit processors.

@tripleee That pattern looks like it's already caught by Pattern-matching website in answer and Pattern-matching website in body; append -force if you really want to do that.

@EriktheOutgolfer humm I flag that from AF as Vandalism ms record show that tp- but its show fp- on chat totally confuse ?

you corrected yourself later?
there was an FP record in MS (from you) when I checked
and then appeared your checkmark

So, my mistake: The Acer is from 2008, Dell is from 2012. Sorry 'bout that. :)

Intel Core-i series, the first generation of which are like i7-990X or so, are far newer than the earliest 64-bit processors.
@Mithrandir My knowledge on hardware still remains :)

@EriktheOutgolfer Nop not at all . So confuse.

lol
It's known that some Chinese guys put random data into boxes they don't know when filling out forms.

that too, but the whois registrars in theory want to crack down on obviously false or bogus registration data
(as in, the ICANN itself wants them to, but they don't want to)

I've seen some "Las Vegas, CA" submitted to a Chinese website.

it looks like the ICANN has applied probably all sorts of bans on that domain lol

10:48 AM
I came across some Chinese domain squatters who filled in their registrations with random phone numbers and street addresses just to make it appear that they are in the EU in order to comply with registration requirements
the little lady in Germany I called up to ask about this had no idea what a domain registration is, let alone why they put her phone number there

Yes, and behind the scenes there's a FULL process behind this.
You pay money and servicers register the domains for you. Very simple "money in, result out", no intervention in between, the guys you pay do it all for you.
In addition to domain registration, there are a lot of other "services" like Dropbox expansion. You pay around US$ 3 and they do you all those invitation quests and you enjoy the 16GB permanently free space.
