@Rickross I want to discuss about the practice of calling everything other than Shruti, Smriti.
I know that you've told in couple of answers to my questions that "Smriti means everything other than Shruti" - this confusion should be cleared. By Smriti means Dharma Shashtra (well defined in Manusmriti) i.e Manu, Parasara, Yajnavalkya, Narada, Harita etc. Smritis.
ok. I agree, however.....

@Pandya According to ur definition any text which is not Sruti is Smriti. But in scriptures we will find verses like this " Sruti and Smriti are the two eyes of Brahman and Purana his heart". So, obviously Purana is not Smriti and of course it is not Sruti as well. Moreover, scriptures say that Smritis are more authoritative than Puranas. If ur definition is correct what will this mean?

@Rickross Yes, I agree that Shruti, Smriti, Purana, Itihasa, Darshana, Agama etc. ar3 different categories.
Now, the question is why are Acharyas calling them Smriti while citing Gita, Purana etc?
e.g. VedaVyasa wrote Smriti when wanted to talk about Bhagavad-Gita which should be considered as Itihasa.
Adi Shankaracharya and other Vedantis also mention them (saying of Itihasa or Puranas) as Smriti.
So, why are they changing the definition of Smriti?
