@heather they do give them to you, they just make them available through *cough* special *cough* means...

2 hours later…
5:56 AM
@Edlothiad lol

6:09 AM
Hey does anyone know how to do anchor links on headers in markdown? can't seem to get it working.

6:26 AM
` [your text](thelink.com) ` ?
@Jared although I'm not sure what you mean by headers here

@Jared I don't think anchors work on SE, sorry.

bugger one of my answers is getting extremely long need anchors to the headings/sections

Yeah - I experienced the same thing. :/

all good thanks guys

Oh you meant like a summary, I get it now

6:36 AM
@Jenayah an anchor is like on Wikipedia, where you can jump to a specific section

@Mithrandir learn a new English word today: checked :)

Seems like markdown does support it, just not stack exchange.
As far as i know anyway

An anchor is also something on a boat that you use to stop the boat. It's a heavy weight ;)
@Jared right

@Mithrandir that I knew! :p

1 hour later…
7:44 AM
Oooh the tag update

@TheLethalCarrot yeah, i'm not actually sure i like it

I don't see a difference to what it used to be at the moment
Though I didn't really pay much attention to it before anyway
@Mithrandir So what everyone thinks of almost all the recent changes... haha

@TheLethalCarrot Indeed. I appreciate that they're actually doing stuff again, but...

Me too but 1) Most of the changes ignore community feedback 2) The most vocal on meta don't like the changes 3) They appear to be focusing on the wrong things

Right. I... kinda got snippy at Joe about the top bar a few months back.

7:48 AM
Most vocal on meta instead of most of the community just to be clear haha
I don't mind the top bar but to me it was a pointless change

Especially now that left nav is apparently a thing.

If left nav is gonna do what I think it's gonna do then I have zero intention of using it
Although I'm still not entirely sure how much theme is changing so I may end up using it for the "Users" page

You'll have to. Did you see how Meta.SE is currently set up with the new theme?

Yeah
Do we have a better tag than for those types of adventure books?

Why would you need a better tag? That's what they're officially called.
oh, the genre, not the series

8:00 AM
Oh is it? I thought they were officially called or similar

An adventure novel is a genre, but not that genre.

Fair enough
Will have to stick with it then, looks horrible though haha

The genre is officially a , like RPGs.

More precisely, the one at stake seems to be a one-true-path

@TheLethalCarrot Ask in the Lit chat, maybe they know more about naming.

8:02 AM
17 Q's tagged , is it worth updating those to ?

Or perhaps look at what example books are tagged in library catalogs.

@TheLethalCarrot probably not - also remember that CYOA is more recognizable, and a gamebook is a wider genre than just those

Wouldn't have thought it was worth it anyway haha
S'pose gamebook can be confused for like game manuals too

Aren't those called books of lore?
For tabletop RPGs I mean?

*shrugs* I'm out of my depth now :P

SQB
8:28 AM
I think is the better known term.

A: 'Favorite Tags' is now 'Tag Watching'

SQBI'm unable to watch or ignore non-existent tags This probably explains something I noticed the other day, I'm no longer to watch or ignore tags that do not exist (yet). Rationale Why would I want to do that? The answer lies between those parentheses. I want to be able to add tags that don't ex...

(I don't like it)

To be fair the old behaviour was probably a bug
Just a useful one

I couldn't remember the number :)

Neither could I: I just Googled "xkcd workflow" :-)

Ah that would have been easier haha

SQB
8:39 AM
Not necessarily a bug, just a different implementation. My guess would be that the database behind it wasn't properly normalised.
And that they're fixing that.

Well a bug or oversight but I imagine it wasn't intended behaviour

@heather There's a nice shop on Gallifrey where you can buy those.

heh, Gall, you're selling things now?

Q: Youth Christian space sci-fi book series with hyperspace, androids, and Mars caves

NathanDThis is a long shot, as I've done some pretty thorough Googling. Looking for a late 90s middle grade Christian sci-fi book series. Things I remember: The first book climax involves a spaceship shooting through hyperspace rings of decreasing diameter. The second book involves a humanoid robot/an...

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot possibly not even unintended behaviour, either. Just unforeseen.

8:40 AM
S'pose

> Another example would be following a tag of a favourite author about whom no questions have been asked yet, but I expect there aren't as many users having that same issue.
@SQB I bet there are many users with this issue. The silent majority who're interested in more than just the big franchises like SW and HP :-)

@Zaphod I bountied this, that first answer by that user is very good

@Randal'Thor This message pinged me
Gallifrey
But not his one
Oh, I see now
My bad

I pinged you and then removed the @ so as not to confuse heather ;-)
Stealth pings!

SQB
Stealth pings, appearing at random.

8:44 AM
:-D

SQB
(Did that work?)

Anyway, I'm off again.
@SQB Nope, things like @sqbdoo don't ping.

SQB
...unless we suddenly get the urge to talk about randomisation.
Or (shudder) Ayn Rand.

hey, Atlas Shrugged wasn't horrible, although I did skip Galt's 50-page speech

SQB
To be fair, I haven't read it, just read of it. But what I've read of it doesn't make me want to read it.
@SQB Wow, 4 rapid up votes! Thanks, people!

8:48 AM
You have to be dedicated to read it. Although it wasn't a bad novel; just long and slightly difficult. The plot was okay. The speech towards the end was over the top.
...it gets slightly explicit at times.

@SQB And in the future (canon) he becomes an unstoppable the cyborg Jason X. Probably needs rewording here too

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot Missed that, thanks.

@SQB did I join the Meta community solely to upvote that, since I think it would indeed be a great feature for SFF.SE/Movies.SE/etc? Maybe :eyeroll:

It's a good feature for everywhere, for example, SO where a new language/language version is coming out

Oh indeed, but I was thinking more of the spoilers situation :)

8:55 AM
Oh that too aye

Because when you want to look out for something you can occasionally search for it, but if you login and suddenly learn that Darth Vader is Luke's father, that sucks.
Spoilers ^ :p

Though that shouldn't be in the title of the question of course
But I get what you mean

No, but if a new user comes and doesn't know the policy, there could be a 10-minute span where the spoiler stays in the title before editing

@SQB Also is the meant for the comic books series Jason X or the character?

You just have to have an awful timing an login right at that moment

8:58 AM
Oh of course
Annoys me when titles are used as an excuse to stop SFF content going to the HNQ is all so I get defensive over it haha

Agreed, the "why did this character do this action" titles aren't that pretty, but getting spoiled by HNQ isn't great either

@SQB And side note when you create all these tags can you at least make a basic tag excerpt, makes them easier to use later on
@Jenayah Sure, we have to find the balance but what people find a spoiler varies from person to person so you'll never please everyone

People care too much about spoilers anyway, IMO :P

In mine too
I read spoilers way before I get a chance to read/watch a work

@TheLethalCarrot Oh, sure

SQB
9:05 AM
@TheLethalCarrot I'll be adding the tag wiki, after doing one for .
@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, I see I missed that on (back when); I'm busy with that one and the others.
I usually do that.
@TheLethalCarrot I think it would be best if it is about the character-franchise (as with ).
@TheLethalCarrot I see you've done , thanks.

9:30 AM
Aye just did a brief one, was gonna do [jason-x] but wasn't sure exactly how you wanted to use it. Seeing as one seemed to be about the series and one the character
@Jenayah A couple of quick tips: "Any help would be appreciated.","Cheers", etc. are considered noise and if you're editing you should generally remove it. [edit] renders to a link that links to editing the post you've commented on. I used to have "Hello and welcome to SFF!" as my opener on FPs but it sent the wrong message with the hello as it appeared to lead some new users to think we were like a discussion forum so now I just use "Welcome to SFF!"
@FuzzyBoots Ninja'd :P

SQB
> Welcome to [fantasy.se] and thank you for your question.
(Or answer, if that's the case).

Well I wouldn't thank them generally but sure, and I'm guessing that links to the homepage?

SQB
Both [fantasy.se] and [scifi.se] render to a site link, but the former is easier on my eyes while typing it.

Aye true

SQB
Links to the homepage and expands to the full name (which is why I use it).

9:38 AM
Might adopt that then, still learning most of the quick links or whatever they are called

SQB
I usually invite people to take the [tour] (expands as well) and read the [help] (expands to a link reading "help center", IIRC).

Aye me too with [tour] depending on case by case and if they are "Informed" or not of course

[edit]and [fantasy.se] are great, I'll deffo use that next time. As for the noise removing, I know the policy, and my stand on that is I agree with it... but new users don't know that, so since it can appear as unwelcoming, robot-like, I'd rather cut that out of posts which have been here for a while. Call me naïve but I kind of like to stick to my principles ;D however if that's a bugger I can switch to stricter edits (or just let someone else do it)

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot If they only have the one bronze badge, I assume it's for writing the post I'm responding to.

@SQB Me too but be careful cos first UVed post gives bronze too

SQB
9:41 AM
@Jenayah I try to leave a edit message explaining that when I do.
@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, but then they wouldn't have a single bronze badge.

@Jenayah It's not a problem leaving it but it's encouraged to remove it if you're editing already, and of course leaving a comment explaining the edit is an option if you don't want it to be robot like

SQB
Also, if an answer is bad, I check if it's a registered user. If so, I welcome them and explain what's bad about it. If not, I assume a drive-by user and just vote (down, closed, what-have-you).

@SQB I think I misread your previous comment slightly
@SQB Probably not the best approach, remember vote on content not the user and if anything you should be encouraging none registered users to register
(Although don't do that to spam/troll accounts of course!)

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot What I meant is that writing our first post (question or answer) gets you a bronze badge: student for a question with at least one up vote, teacher for an answer with at least one up vote.

@SQB Yeah I just mean don't blindly assume they have read the tour just because they have 1 bronze badge because of those ones but I think that's what you mean anyway

SQB
9:47 AM
So when I see a user with one bronze badge post as the author of a post that qualifies, I assume it's one of those and don't check the user page to see if they are informed; I just assume they aren't. No harm in inviting someone on the tour twice.
@TheLethalCarrot Exactly.

@SQB Sure but I think this is where the standard "If you haven't already..." comment comes from
Just to be friendlier

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot good point.

Although I generally check the badges (it's only one click and one button press away) before writing the comment

While flagging as NaA, can we add a little message justifying why it doesn't appear to be an answer?

Sure you can

9:51 AM
Yeah but I meant, how?
I see the "moderator intervetion needed"

Oh not as part of the flag no
You can write a comment underneath the post if need be

But the actual flag is NaA, I just want to point out that "Corak" isn't a book according to quick Google-Fu

Well I haven't flagged that one yet
Was waiting to see if they responded to my comment

SQB
@Jenayah ah, that's not what NaA is for.

Though if you want to point that out why not just write a comment out?

SQB
9:52 AM
NaA means that it is not an answer in any form or shape.

It should rather be a comment, since the poster really seems to reply to Valorum.

SQB
Ah, yes, that is NaA.
I thought you meant it wasn't an answer because it was incorrect.

Ah didn't see Valorum's comment, you're right looks to be a reply

SQB
Use a mod flag; they can convert it into a comment.

But I'm not sure whether the correct flag would be NaA or "in need of mod intervention" since it may appear as an answer, but really basic Google-fu shows no book called Corak
Alrighty then

9:55 AM
I've edited the answer into the question, fine to normal delete if you want

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot you could've dropped the as well, possibly.
Doesn't really add much.

It's acceptable to use it on story-id Qs

SQB
Ends up being used a lot on questions.

I don't like it but it's allowed so meh

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, meh indeed.

9:56 AM
is there markdown in the messages for mods?

Don't believe so

ok

links work

Like []()? Well that's good to know haha

I think so; it's been a while since I saw one, though.

10:02 AM
I've never tried because I just assumed markdown doesn't work in flag text because you can't preview it to check
Want to run a quick test on lit? :P
(If it's easy for you to find a specific mod flag)

Aw crap, a mod's going to have to look at an ugly link 'cause of me. Sorry mods! :(

Haha I always use ugly links in flag text too

SQB
OMG SNOOPY IS A TIME LORD! — James from NZ Jul 2 at 9:53

Aww don't link that, I don't need the DVs haha
@Mithrandir Flagged

10:05 AM
@TheLethalCarrot works in the queue, not in the waffle bar

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot I up voted that, actually.

@Mithrandir So sortta helpful then?

So we're back with the Peanuts war now? :)

yeah

He's able to make it around the entire world, including time to go down every...

10:06 AM
@SQB Aye most people did not though haah

SQB
I'm tempted to ask the same thing about Snoopy.

SQB
"Is Snoopy a Time Lord and is his doghouse a Tardis?"

@SQB Are you trying to spark a civil war on SFF's meta? :)

Then dupe yours to mine ;P
@Jenayah I think we're passed sparks at this point haha
@Mithrandir Actually shows up as an inline link on my flags page too

SQB
10:25 AM
Note for those concerned: done with tagging or otherwise editing old posts for now.

is a series of comics, too.
Warning, they're a bit NSFW.

@SQB Thanks, Don't like too many old bumps to the front page

They are based on the actual tales, though, but just thought I'd point it out

This post is coming to LQP review from my flag. I've edited it into the OPs other answer so we don't need it anymore

So we should all DV it?

10:33 AM
No, ones enough to be able to VTD it

oh ok

Though you'll have to wait for the LQP for Recommending deletion I believe

learning as it goes :)
yeah, did that

I was just clarifying in case anyone was wondering why I VTD it

poof

10:35 AM
Mith and SQB got it anyway
Actually doing work today... :/

The tag could use some (diluted, of course) retagging. It seems that there's at least a hundred questions that could use it, no? see this query
(did a quick search on Meta but did not find a post addressing that)

They probably warrant the tag but is it needed?

10:50 AM
@Jenayah meh
is probably more applicable

@TheLethalCarrot Are we going to discuss tag policy consistency? So that I can go get some popcorn before we begin ahah :)

SQB
@Mithrandir depending on the question, I think.

@Jenayah Oh I'd love for everything to be consistent, just in most cases it isn't viable

I guess

And 100 odd questions at 5 a day will take 20 odd days
When me and Ed cleaned up GRRM of about 150 Q's (maybe a bit less) it took a couple of months so we didn't destroy the home page too much

10:55 AM
Ahhh, the great tag cleanup event... where I retagged ~1,000 questions in 24 hours.

I wish I was around for that :P
I'd be about overtaking you on overall edits now if I was haha

What's worse is that was during my PPCG days so I could have taken part in it haha
@SQB Is there any point keeping the dead link in the post but hidden?

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot Yes, for the OP to fix.

But you've fixed the image link yourself anyway?

SQB
11:11 AM
@TheLethalCarrot There was a new suggested image (as part of the big edit event, I think).

Oh right

SQB
Note to @Randal'Thor: I think renaming to should be a rather easy and uncontroversial move, right?

@SQB And in line with policy.

7 Q's spread them out over 2 or 3 days and fix everything on the whole post and you're good

I'd just raise a custom flag on one question with that tag.

11:16 AM
Mods still have to manually edit though don't they?

nope

Ah right
I know there's some special things mods can do with regards to tags but I don't know them all

merge the tag with a nonexistent tag, and it renames. then fetch the wiki from the orphan wiki page and put it back in the new tag

Ahhh you can merge tags
Also @SQB be careful with flooding the home page

SQB
No worries, it was just those two (in addition to the previous ones).

11:20 AM
(That took me forever to figure out how to do, though - those tools aren't the best documented.)

SQB
Added usage guidance for ; leaving tag info for someone else.
I find the usage guidance way more important than the tag info.

I usually just do the excerpt and if needed the wiki can be added later on
The excerpt is the most important bit though

nobody reads the wiki anyway

Barely anyone reads the excerpts
Maybe the update will fix that a bit though

@Mithrandir Except comics-obstinate, chauvinist pedantics. hides

SQB
11:26 AM
Does anyone know how to search for tag wiki posts? wiki:yes yields the community wiki answers.

You mean search these pages? Or something else?

@SQB probably data.SE

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, but by user. user:me is:tag, something like that.

SEDE is only updated weekly though unfortunately
SEDE probably best bet if that's what you're after then
Tags, new can help for recently created ones
Though you'd have to manually look through them

SQB
Yeah, the SEDE it is then.

11:39 AM
Hum... Policy and general freedom of voting guide us not to directly ask for the reason of downvotes, which I agree with, but I would also make sure to edit my question if it was to be a quality issue, so would anyone have any idea why this would get downvoted? Again, I'm concerned about quality issues - if DVer just doesn't find the question to his/her liking I'm fine with it, to each his own :)
Might be going on a slippery slope there, so tell me if I should just shut up ;)

You're fine to ask for DVs if you want but most people won't explain them

I noticed that yeah, which is why I'm taking the liberty to ask on chat since there are currently 4-5 long-time users there who could help me spot a quality issue, if it is one
As I said earlier, learning as things go... :)

Two things that jump out to me are: Schools are supposed to notice these sorts of patterns - modern-day schools in the first world, yes. But even as recently as twenty or thirty years ago, not so much, and by my figuring Voldemort went to school about eighty years ago. Plus the wizarding community tends to lag behind us on this sort of thing. so could be DV because of false premise (not saying this user DVed you of course)
And you're opening sentence We get it. Voldemort is the Hitler of the wizarding world. He's filled with racist thoughts, supremacist ideas, etc, etc. merely mentioning Hitler and other "controversial" subjects is enough for some people
Though to be honest nothing majorly wrong that I can directly spot why you'd be DVed
+1 from me though, nice question and it prompted another good answer from Bella

@TheLethalCarrot ah, indeed! We were talking about that yesterday and DV came later, buy the guy still made a good point!

Aye could be someone reading the comments later on and Dving

11:47 AM
@TheLethalCarrot ahah, indeed also. Especially since I was reminded of that on History.SE chat, because I was about to ask the same about Hitler actually!

To be honest though I wouldn't look to much into the occasional DV. Some votes are odd and you'll never make sense of them
yesterday, by TheLethalCarrot
@Jenayah Some people just want to watch the world burn
@Jenayah Mentioning him how you did was fine, even if not 100% needed, but it does rub some people the wrong way

@TheLethalCarrot yeah, what we were discussing yesterday there

Aye from reading the first few comments it sounds about right
Hey @Aeg how's it going?

12:10 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Routine. Pretending to work and lurking on Reddit and SE instead. How's it going for you

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot And only now they enter the room.
Am I lagging or is @TheLethalCarrot a pre-cog?

Haha no I was here earlier in hopes there might be some discussion going on here in which I'd like to participate. Then got back to work.

@Aegon Similar to you haha though just lurking on SE. Still waiting for new Qs

Kinda makes you miss the Show

I know
Though, as I've always said, the show is good for what it is

12:14 PM
@TheLethalCarrot I should have one coming Sunday... ;)

@Mithrandir Posting on Monday you say? Good good

@TheLethalCarrot Confusing the casuals and helping us farm rep?

@Aegon If you want to word it that when then.... yes

SQB
Well I'll be — never knew that was a Dutch band.

12:34 PM
@SQB Shameless haha

SQB
@TheLethalCarrot of course. But besides a shameless plug of my own question, it doubles as an attempt to invite a new user to contribute.

I know, only joking
I'm sure I've done similar things

@SQB are you asking us to put another song in that head of yours? That can certainly be done, but you can't really know which songs we would go with... :)

SQB
Actually, I'm pretty okay with this song in my head. I was just trying to promote it.

3:14 PM
grumble I have an incredibly vague [story-identification] thing in my head. Yet another book that I read in my childhood, somewhere in the 1990s, paperback, colorful cartoony cover. I think with three guys in a car. It was a film-noir kind of setup, I remember, but other than that, my only other firm memory was that they had all sorts of raygun variants from laser to masers to grasers.
:-P I don't remember enough to actually ask a question, particularly since I'm not certain what's really real and what's me vaguely remembering various books I read back then.

It's more information that a lot of new users' story id questions give though

@FuzzyBoots you know, if we ever build a time machine and you get your hands on one, I think the best thing you could do is go back in time and scold your 8-years-old self into keeping everything he watched/read/listened to in a copybook.

:-D Yeah, but I'd probably be too busy messing with the space-time continuum by telling myself what companies to invest in and avoiding all of the horrible things in my life that probably led up to me having access to a time machine.

"Goddammit, Barry Fuzzy!"

@FuzzyBoots You're the one who asked about the web comic "The Monster Under the Bed" aren't ya?

3:21 PM
woohoo, got the markdown right eventually ^

(Not forgiven you for introducing me to that and the slow rate at which it progresses haha)

3:37 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Yes. And then posted the answer.

After that I think I binge read it in about 2 days and then slowly fell into a pit of despair waiting for the "weekly" updates haha

Heh. Yeah... that's an issue with webcomics. Freefall took something like 15 years to cover the first week? Admittedly, that's with a pretty consistent MWF schedule.

Yeah it's not a bad one with the rate they go out but first one I've properly read

^_^ I've got to catch up with that one a bit. Part of the problem is that you never know when there will be an NSFW update.

If we're talking about webcomics, I shall recommend A Modest Destiny, which is by far the best webcomic ever, of all time. Long-lasting well-driven story, lots of funny characters, geek references, self-derision, and it's in pixel art!

3:42 PM
@FuzzyBoots There hasn't been too much but yeah it crops up semi randomly from time to time, especially with all the jumping around with the timelines

Q: How Does Superman Propel Himself?

TangoAfter reading the question How Does Superman Fly? I find I'm still left with a major question on the same topic (and the answer to the question doesn't touch on this). How does Superman propel himself through the air and change direction and speed? If he just jumped up and start flying, he'd be...
